Effects of bamboo invasion on forest structures and diameter–height allometries

Forest structure is fundamental in determining ecosystem function,yet the impact of bamboo invasion on these structural characteristics remains *** investigated 219 invasion transects at 41 sites across the distribution areas of Moso bamboo(Phyllostachys edulis)in China to explore the effects of bamboo invasion on forest structural attributes and diameter–height allometries by comparing paired plots of bamboo,mixed bamboo-tree,and non-bamboo forests along the *** found that bamboo invasion decreased the mean and maximum diameter at breast height,maximum height,and total basal area,but increased the mean height,stem density,and scaling exponent for *** also had a higher scaling exponent than tree,particularly in mixed forests,suggesting a greater allocation of biomass to height *** invasion intensity increased,bamboo allometry became more plastic and decreased significantly,whereas tree allometry was indirectly promoted by increasing stem ***,a humid climate may favour the scaling exponents for both bamboo and tree,with only minor contributions from topsoil moisture and nitrogen *** inherent superiority of diameter–height allometry allows bamboo to outcompete tree and contributes to its invasive *** findings provide a theoretical basis for understanding the causes and consequences of bamboo invasion.

Nitrogen addition promotes soil carbon accumulation globally

Soil is the largest carbon(C)reservoir in terrestrial ecosystems and plays a crucial role in regulating the global C cycle and climate *** nitrogen(N)deposition has been widely considered as a critical factor affecting soil organic carbon(SOC)storage,but its effect on SOC components with different stability remains ***,we analyzed extensive empirical data from 304 sites worldwide to investigate how SOC and its components respond to N *** analysis showed that N addition led to a significant increase in bulk SOC(6.7%),with greater increases in croplands(10.6%)and forests(6.0%)compared to grasslands(2.1%).Regarding SOC components,N addition promoted the accumulation of plant-derived C(9.7%–28.5%)over microbial-derived C(0.2%),as well as labile(5.7%)over recalcitrant components(–1.2%),resulting in a shift towards increased accumulation of plant-derived labile ***,N addition led to a greater increase in particulate organic C(11.9%)than mineral-associated organic C(3.6%),suggesting that N addition promotes C accumulation across all pools,with more increase in unstable than stable *** responses of SOC and its components were best predicted by the N addition rate and net primary ***,our findings suggest that N enrichment could promote the accumulation of plant-derived and non-mineral associated C and a subsequent decrease in the overall stability of soil C pool,which underscores the importance of considering the effects of N enrichment on SOC components for a better understanding of C dynamics in soils.

Independent and interactive effects of N and P additions on foliar P fractions in evergreen forests of southern China

Fertilization or atmospheric deposition of nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)to terrestrial ecosystems can alter soil N(P)availability and the nature of nutrient limitation for plant *** the allocation of leaf P fractions is potentially an adaptive strategy for plants to cope with soil N(P)availability and nutrient-limiting ***,the impact of the interactions between imbalanced anthropogenic N and P inputs on the concentrations and allocation proportions of leaf P fractions in forest woody plants remains *** conducted a metaanalysis of data about the concentrations and allocation proportions of leaf P fractions,specifically associated with individual and combined additions of N and P in evergreen forests,the dominant vegetation type in southern China where the primary productivity is usually considered limited by *** assessment allowed us to quantitatively evaluate the effects of N and P additions alone and interactively on leaf P allocation and use *** addition(exacerbating P limitation)reduced the concentrations of leaf total P and different leaf P *** addition reduced the allocation to leaf metabolic P but increased the allocation to other fractions,while P addition showed opposite *** simultaneous additions of N and P showed an antagonistic(mutual suppression)effect on the concentrations of leaf P fractions,but an additive(summary)effect on the allocation proportions of leaf P *** results highlight the importance of strategies of leaf P fraction allocation in forest plants under changes in environmental nutrient ***,our study identified critical interactions associated with combined N and P inputs that affect leaf P fractions,thus aiding in predicting plant acclimation strategies in the context of intensifying and imbalanced anthropogenic nutrient inputs.

Engineered iron-based metal-organic frameworks nanoplatforms for cancer theranostics: A mini review

Up to now, numerous emerging methods of cancer treatment including chemodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, sonodynamic therapy, immunotherapy and chemotherapy have rapidly entered a new stage of development. However, the single treatment mode is often constrained by the complex tumor microenvironment. Recently, the nanomaterials and nanomedicine have emerged as promising avenues to overcome the limitation in cancer theranostics. Especially, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained considerable interests in cancer therapy because of their customizable morphologies, easy functionalization, large specific surface area, and good biocompatibility. Among these MOFs, iron-based MOFs (Fe-MOFs) are particularly promising for cancer treatment due to their properties as nano-photosensitizers, peroxidase-like activity, bioimaging contrast capabilities, and *** their structural regularity and synthetic tunability, Fe-MOFs can be engineered to incorporate organic molecules or other inorganic nanoparticles, thereby creating multifunctional nanoplatforms for single or combined theranostic modes. Herein, the minireview focuses on the recent advancements of the Fe-MOFs-based nanoplatforms for self-enhanced imaging and treatment at tumor sites. Furthermore,the clinical research development of Fe-MOFs-based nanoplatforms is discussed, addressing key challenges and innovations for the future. Our review aims to provide novice researchers with a foundational understanding of advanced cancer theranostic modes and promote their clinical applications through the modification of Fe-MOFs.

Vegetation mapping of Yunnan Province by integrating remote sensing, field observations, and models

Vegetation maps are crucial for ecologists and decision-makers, providing essential information on the spatial distribution of various vegetation types to support ecosystem exploration and management. Despite advancements in Earth observation and machine learning enabling large-scale vegetation mapping, creating detailed and accurate maps in biodiversity hotspots remains challenging due to significant environmental heterogeneity and frequent human disturbances. The lack of sufficient ground-based data and complex climate-vegetation interactions further limits mapping accuracy. In this study, we developed an integrated framework for multi-source data fusion to enhance vegetation mapping and validation in Yunnan Province, a global biodiversity hotspot region in Southwest China. The mapping process involved four key steps:(1) vegetation classification using random forest and Landsat imagery,(2) boundary calibration based on a locally calibrated static climatevegetation model,(3) patch correction with independent forest inventory data, and(4) validation using adequate field observations. This approach enabled the mapping of 17 vegetation types and 44 subtypes in Yunnan Province(1:50000), categorized based on the growth-form composition of dominant species of the community. The overall accuracies were 0.747 and0.710 for natural vegetation types and subtypes, and 0.905 and 0.891 for artificial types and subtypes. This high-resolution map enhances our understanding of vegetation distribution and ecological complexity in this region, offering valuable insights for policymakers to support conservation efforts and sustainable management strategies.

Rising frequency of ozone-favorable synoptic weather patterns contributes to 2015-2022 ozone increase in Guangzhou

Objective weather classification methods have been extensively applied to identify dominant ozone-favorable synoptic weather patterns(SWPs),however,the consistency of different classification methods is rarely *** this study,we apply two widely-used objective methods,the self-organizing map(SOM)and K-means clustering analysis,to derive ozone-favorable SWPs at four Chinese megacities in *** find that the two algorithms are largely consistent in recognizing dominant ozone-favorable SWPs for four Chinese *** the case of classifying six SWPs,the derived circulation fields are highly similar with a spatial correlation of 0.99 between the two methods,and the difference in themean frequency of each SWP is less than 7%.The six dominant ozone-favorable SWPs in Guangzhou are all characterized by anomaly higher radiation and temperature,lower cloud cover,relative humidity,and wind speed,and stronger subsidence compared to climatology *** find that during 2015-2022,the occurrence of ozone-favorable SWPs days increases significantly at a rate of 3.2 days/year,faster than the increases in the ozone exceedance days(3.0 days/year).The interannual variability between the occurrence of ozone-favorable SWPs and ozone exceedance days are generally consistent with a temporal correlation coefficient of *** particular,the significant increase in ozone-favorable SWPs in 2022,especially the Subtropical High type which typically occurs in September,is consistent with a long-lasting ozone pollution episode in Guangzhou during September *** results thus reveal that enhanced frequency of ozone-favorable SWPs plays an important role in the observed 2015-2022 ozone increase in Guangzhou.
