From 2009 to 2017,parts of Central America experienced marked increase in the number of small to moderate-sized *** example,three significant earthquakes(~Mw 5)occurred near Prague,Oklahoma,in the *** *** 6 Nov 2011,an Mw 5.7 earthquake occurred in Prague,central Oklahoma with a sequence of *** seismic activity has been attributed to slip on the Wilzetta fault *** study provides a 3 D fully coupled poroelastic analysis(using FLAC3 D)of the Wilzetta fault system and its response to saltwater injection in the underpressured subsurface layers,especially the Arbuckle group and the basement,to evaluate the conditions that might have led to the increased *** the data-limited nature of the problem,we have considered multiple plausible scenarios,and use the available data to evaluate the hydromechanical response of the faults of interest in the study *** simulations show that the injection of large volumes of fluid into the Arbuckle group tends to bring the part of the Wilzetta faults in Arbuckle group and basement into near-critical conditions.

Optimizing sampling frequency of surface and downhole measurements for efficient stick-slip vibration detection

Drilling vibrations significantly impact drilling operations with high costs due to early downhole equipment failure and loss of productive ***-slip vibrations,a severe form of torsional vibrations,is known to be present up to 50%of total drilling time,making it a topic of immense concern and *** ongoing discussion in the industry is regarding the reliability of surface measurements for early detection of severe downhole bit ***,most surface measurements are sampled at lower frequency rates closer to 1 ***,the implementation of advanced data acquisition modules in downhole subs has greatly improved our understanding of drilling vibrations through high resolution data,sampled up to 10 ***,with a wide range of sampling frequency to choose from different available tools,a critical question remains *** is an optimal and adequate sampling frequency for early detection of downhole vibrations using both surface and downhole measurements?The paper addresses the question with a focus on stick-slip vibrations through an experimental *** slip tests are repeated for different sampling frequencies of surface and downhole measurements and the stick slip index for each case is *** stick-slip index varies for different sampling frequency even though the vibration tests remain completely *** was inferred that sampling frequency of measurements greatly impact the detection of downhole *** though stick-slip vibrations are characteristically low frequency vibrations(2Hz),a minimum of 10Hz sampling frequency is recommended for detection of stick-slip ***,all characteristics of stick-slip vibrations including bit sticking,bit RPM peaks and negative bit RPMs are clearly observed at a minimum of 100Hz sampling rate.

Influence of abnormal stress under a residual bearing coal pillar on the stability of a mine entry

Mine entries close to residual bearing coal pillars(RBCPs) will suffer large deformation that may cause rock burst. To better understand the deformation mechanism and develop safe and practical guidelines for entry design, most studies focus on the absolute size of the stress field in and around the pillar. In this paper, we present a new approach to analyze the abnormal stress field close to a RBCP that uses the stress concentration coefficient(SCC), stress gradient(SG), and coefficient of lateral pressure(CLP) to describe the stress state induced by the RBCP. Based on elastic theory and a mathematical model for the abutment stress in the RBCP, an analytical solution for the abnormal stress in the strata below the RBCP was derived and the characteristics of the abnormal stress for a case study of a coal mine in China were analyzed. The results show that the abnormal stress field around the pillar is characterized by four distinct zones: a zone of high SCC, high SG, and CLP less than 1, a zone of high SCC, low SG, and CLP less than 1, a zone of low SCC, SG close to 0, and CLP greater than 1, and a zone of SCC close to 1, SC close to 0, and CLP close to 1. Based on this zoning pattern, a numerical model was established to study the combined effects of the abnormal stress on the stability of the entry. The most stable zone was determined based on a model of the Xinrui coal mine and verified by field measurements at the mine. Our conclusions can be used as guidelines for designing safe entry layouts in similar geological and mining settings.

Knowledge about reservoir fluid properties such as bubble point pressure(Pb)plays a vital role in improving reliability of oil reservoir *** this work,hybrid of swarm intelligence and artificial neural network(ANN)as a robust and effective method was executed to determine the Pb of crude oil *** addition,the exactly precise Pb data samples reported in the literatures were employed to create and validate the PSO-ANN *** prove and depict the reliability of the smart model developed in this study for estimating Pb of crude oils,the conventional approaches were applied on the same data *** on the results generated by PSO-ANN model and other conventional methods and equation of states(EOS),the PSO-ANN model is a reliable and accurate approach for estimating Pb of crude *** is certified by high value of correlation coefficient(R2)and insignificant value of average absolute relative deviation(AARD%)which are obtained from PSO-ANN *** of this study could help reservoir engineers to have better understanding of reservoir fluid behavior in absence of reliable and experimental data samples.

Propagation and aperture of staged hydraulic fractures in unconventional resources in toughness-dominated regimes

Simultaneous multistage hydraulic fracturing of unconventional gas shale in parallel multilateral wells is an effective technique to raise the connectivity of the reservoir to the wellbore and improve reservoir permeability for an economical production. However, this technique should be accompanied with some optimization procedures to obtain an efficiently fractured reservoir with the highest production and the lowest cost. In unconventional hydraulic fracturing, fracture deviation/collapse and trapping are familiar phenomena which occur when a non-optimized fracturing pattern is used. These problems occur respectively when stress shadow size has not been considered in optimization and fracturing pressure is higher than the available pressure in the sealed section. Therefore, in an optimized hydraulic fracturing,having straight fractures with no deviation or collapse needs consideration of stress shadow effect(SSE).Apart from that, having efficiently propagated fractures to the extent of the reservoir without any fracture trap requires consideration of stress intensity factor(SIF) and aperture. SSE was studied and published by the authors in 2014. For the case of SIF, investigating any change in mode I SIF and aperture with different influencing variables such as fracture geometry and pattern are studied in the current research work. Three different fracturing techniques are assumed as multistage fracturing, simultaneous single-stage fracturing, and simultaneous multistage fracturing techniques. Since obtaining SIF for threedimensional fractures is a challenging issue, a stress ratio technique is used for calculation of SIF ratios of different fracturing scenarios compared to the case of a single fracture. Therefore, changes of SIF for different fracturing schemes are estimated and analyzed to understand whether or not a fracturing scheme is efficient and all the spaced perforations are activated and change to hydraulic fractures.

Investigation of feasibility of alkali-cosolvent flooding in heavy oil reservoirs

Cold production is a challenge in the case of heavy oil because of its high viscosity and poor fluidity in reservoir ***-cosolvent-polymer flooding is a type of microemulsion flooding with low costs and possible potential for heavy oil ***,the addition of polymer may cause problems with injection in the case of highly viscous ***,in this study the feasibility of alkali-cosolvent(AC)flooding in heavy oil reservoirs was investigated via several groups of *** interfacial tension between various AC formulations and heavy crude oil was measured to select appropriate *** behavior tests were performed to determine the most appropriate formulation and conditions for the generation of a *** flooding experiments were carried out to investigate the displacement efficiency of the selected Ac *** results showed that the interfacial tension between an AC formulation and heavy oil could be reduced to below 1o-3 mN/m but differed greatly between different types of cosolvent.A butanol random polyether series displayed good performance in reducing the water-oil interfacial tension,which made it possible to form a Type Il microemulsion in reservoir *** to the results of the phase behavior tests,the optimal salinity for different formulations with four cosolvent concentrations(0.5 wt%,1 wt%,2 wt%,and 3 wt%)was 4000,8000,14000,and 20000 ppm,*** results of rheological measurements showed that Type Ill microemulsion had a viscosity that was ten times that of *** results of sandpack flooding experiments showed that,in comparison with waterflooding,the injection of a certain Ac formulation slug could reduce the injection *** pressure gradient during waterflooding and AC flooding was around 870 and 30-57 kPa/m,*** the addition of an AC slug,the displacement efficiency was 30%-50%higher than in the case of waterflooding.
