Cancer statistics in Chinese older people,2022:current burden,time trends,and comparisons with the US,Japan,and the Republic of Korea

Largely due to population ageing,the cancer burden from older people has been rising,which imposed considerable pressure on current Chinese healthcare system.We provide comprehensive information about cancer burden of Chinese older people based on the most recent data from National Central Cancer Registry of China.The logarithmic linear regression was used to project the current cancer burden in 2022,and Joinpoint regression was used for temporal trend analysis from 2000 to 2017.We also estimated cancer statistics of older people in the US,Japan and the Republic of Korea for comparisons.It is estimated that 2.79 million cases and 1.94 million deaths occur for Chinese older people,representing 55.8%and 68.2%of cases and deaths in all population in 2022.The overall cancer incidence rate gradually increased among older women,while the mortality rates declined for both sexes.Notably,approximately 10.0%of all cases and 17.7%of all deaths are from people aged over 80 years,and cancer incidence and mortality in this age group showed upward trends for women.Lung cancer and digestive cancers are the leading cancer types for Chinese older people.Compared with other countries,China has lower incidence rates but higher mortality rates for older people.The rapidly growing burden of prostate cancer,breast cancer,colorectal cancer,and declines in esophageal cancer,stomach cancer,and liver cancer among older people indicate the cancer pattern in China is being in a transition stage to that in developed countries.Our findings imply that it should be the national health priority to meet the growing demands for cancer diagnosis,treatment and care services from the older people as the rapid population ageing in next few decades.

Circular RNA circ-LDLRAD3 as a biomarker in diagnosis of pancreatic cancer

AIM To analyze the diagnostic value of a circular RNA(circR NA), circ-LDLRAD3, in pancreatic cancer.METHODS Expression levels of circ-LDLRAD3 were tested in both cells and clinical samples; the latter included 30 paired pancreatic cancer tissues and adjacent non-tumorous tissues, 31 plasma samples from patients with pancreatic cancer, and 31 plasma samples from healthy volunteers. Real-time quantitative reverse transcriptionpolymerase chain reaction(q RT-PCR) was performed to measure expression levels of circ-LDLRAD3 in cells and clinical samples; then, the relationship between clinicopathological factors of patient samples and expression of circ-LDLRAD3 in pancreatic cancer was analyzed. The diagnostic value of circ-LDLRAD3 was verified by receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve analysis.RESULTS Circ-LDLRAD3 was up-regulated in pancreatic cancer cell lines(P < 0.01), pancreatic cancer tissues(P < 0.01), and plasma samples from patients with pancreatic cancer(P < 0.01). High expression of circLDLRAD3 was significantly associated with venous invasion, lymphatic invasion, and metastasis. The area under the ROC curve of circ-LDLRAD3 alone or combination with CA19-9 was 0.67 and 0.87, respectively, with a sensitivity and specificity of 0.5738(alone) and 0.7049(alone), and 0.8033(combination) and 0.9355(combination), respectively.CONCLUSION These data suggest that circ-LDLRAD3 may be a biomarker in the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.

The discovery of immune checkpoint inhibitors,such as PD-1/PD-L1 and CTLA-4,has played an important role in the development of cancer immunotherapy.However,immune-related adverse events often occur because of the enhanced immune response enabled by these agents.Antibiotics are widely applied in clinical treatment,and they are inevitably used in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors.Clinical practice has revealed that antibiotics can weaken the therapeutic response to immune checkpoint inhibitors.Studies have shown that the gut microbiota is essential for the interaction between immune checkpoint inhibitors and antibiotics,although the exact mechanisms remain unclear.This review focuses on the interactions between immune checkpoint inhibitors and antibiotics,with an in-depth discussion about the mechanisms and therapeutic potential of modulating gut microbiota,as well as other new combination strategies.

Global trajectories of liver cancer burden from 1990 to 2019 and projection to 2035

Background:Large disparities exist in liver cancer burden trends across countries but are poorly understood.We aimed to investigate the global trajectories of liver cancer burden,explore the driving forces,and predict future trends.Methods:Data on the liver cancer burden in 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2019 were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease Study.The age-standardized incidence rate(ASIR)and age-standardized mortality rate(ASMR)trajectories were defined using growth mixture models.Five major risk factors contributing to changes in the ASIR or ASMR and socioeconomic determinants were explored using the identified trajectories.A Bayesian age-period-cohort model was used to predict future trends through 2035.Results:Three trajectories of liver cancer burden were identified:increasing,stable,and decreasing groups.Almost half of the American countries were classified in the decreasing group(48.6%for ASIR and ASMR),and the increasing group was the most common in the European region(ASIR,49.1%;ASMR,37.7%).In the decreasing group,the decrease of liver cancer due to hepatitis B contributed 63.4%and 60.4%of the total decreases in ASIR and ASMR,respectively.The increase of liver cancer due to alcohol use,hepatitis C,and hepatitis B contributed the most to the increase in the increasing group(30.8%,31.1%,and 24.2%for ASIR;33.7%,30.2%,and 22.2%for ASMR,respectively).The increasing group was associated with a higher sociodemographic index,gross domestic product per capita,health expenditure per capita,and universal health coverage(all P<0.05).Significant variations in disease burden are predicted to continue through 2035,with a disproportionate burden in the decreasing group.Conclusion:Global disparities were observed in liver cancer burden trajectories.Hepatitis B,alcohol use,and hepatitis C were identified as driving forces in different regions.

Association between clustering of cardiovascular risk factors and resting heart rate in Chinese population:a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND Epidemiologic studies have explored the association between a single cardiovascular risk factor(CVRF)and resting heart rate(RHR),but the research on the relation of multiple risk factors with RHR remains scarce.This study aimed to explore the associations between CVRFs clustering and the risk of elevated RHR.METHODS In this cross-sectional study,adults aged 35-75 years from 31 provinces were recruited by the China PEACE Million Persons Projects from September 2015 to August 2020.We focused on seven risk factors:hypertension,diabetes mellitus,dyslipidemia,obesity,smoking,alcohol use,and low physical activity.Multivariate logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios(OR)for elevated RHR(>80 beats/min).RESULTS Among 1,045,405 participants,the mean age was 55.67±9.86 years,and 60.4%of participants were women.The OR(95%CI)for elevated RHR for the groups with 1,2,3,4 and≥5 risk factor were 1.11(1.08-1.13),1.36(1.33-1.39),1.68(1.64-1.72),2.01(1.96-2.07)and 2.58(2.50-2.67),respectively(Ptrend<0.001).The association between the CVRFs clustering number and elevated RHR was much more pronounced in young males than in other age-sex subgroups.Clusters comprising more metabolic risk factors were associated with a higher risk of elevated RHR than those comprising more behavioral risk factors.CONCLUSIONS There was a significant positive association between the CVRFs clustering number and the risk of elevated RHR,particularly in young males.Compared clusters comprising more behavioral risk factors,clusters comprising more metabolic risk factors were associated with a higher risk of elevated RHR.RHR may serve as an indicator of the cumulative effect of multiple risk factors.

Low toxic graphene quantum dot（GQD） was synthesized by pyrolyzing citric acid in alkaline solution and characterized by ultraviolet-visible（UV-vis） spectroscopy,X-ray diffraction（XRD）,atomic force microscopy（AFM）,spectrofluorimetery and dynamic light scattering（DLS） techniques.GQD was used for electrode modification and electro-oxidation of doxorubicin（DOX） at low potential.A substantial decrease in the overvoltage（- 0.56 V） of the DOX oxidation reaction（compared to ordinary electrodes） was observed using GQD as coating of glassy carbon electrode（GCE）.Differential pulse voltammetry was used to evaluate the analytical performance of DOX in the presence of phosphate buffer solution（pH 4.0） and good limit of detection was obtained by the proposed sensor.Such ability of GQD to promote the DOX electron-transfer reaction suggests great promise for its application as an electrochemical sensor.

Ovarian cancer is among the most lethal gynecological cancers,primarily due to the lack of specific symptoms leading to an advanced-stage diagnosis and resistance to chemotherapy.Drug resistance(DR)poses the most significant challenge in treating patients with existing drugs.The Food and Drug Administration(FDA)has recently approved three new therapeutic drugs,including two poly(ADP-ribose)polymerase(PARP)inhibitors(olaparib and niraparib)and one vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)inhibitor(bevacizumab)for maintenance therapy.However,resistance to these new drugs has emerged.Therefore,understanding the mechanisms of DR and exploring new approaches to overcome them is crucial for effective management.In this review,we summarize the major molecular mechanisms of DR and discuss novel strategies to combat DR.

Purpose:Injuries are one of the leading causes of death and lead to a high social and financial burden.Injury patterns can vary significantly among different age groups and body regions.This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between mechanism of injury,patient comorbidities and severity of injuries.Methods:The study included trauma patients from July 2016 to June 2018,who were admitted to Sina Hospital,Tehran,Iran.The inclusion criteria were all injured patients who had at least one of the following:hospital length of stay more than 24 h,death in hospital,and transfer from the intensive care unit of another hospital.Data collection was performed using the National Trauma Registry of Iran minimum dataset.Results:The most common injury mechanism was road traffic injuries(49.0%),followed by falls(25.5%).The mean age of those who fell was significantly higher in comparison with other mechanisms(p<0.001).Severe extremity injuries occurred more often in the fall group than in the vehicle collision group(69.0%vs.43.5%,p<0.001).Moreover,cases of severe multiple trauma were higher amongst vehicle collisions than injuries caused by falls(27.8%vs.12.9%,p=0.003).Conclusion:Comparing falls with motor vehicle collisions,patients who fell were older and sustained more extremity injuries.Patients injured by motor vehicle collision were more likely to have sustained multiple trauma than those presenting with falls.Recognition of the relationship between mechanisms and consequences of injuries may lead to more effective interventions.

Determination of 4-nonylphenol and 4-tert-octylphenol compounds in various types of wastewater and their removal rates in different treatment processes in nine wastewater treatment plants of Iran

Alkylphenols(APs), considered as xenoestrogenic compounds, mainly exist as 4-nonylphenol(4-NP) and 4-tertoctylphenol(4-t-OP) in environments. The high stability and accumulation of APs in aquatic systems have caused endocrine disruption. In this study we measured APs in the wastewater influent and effluent samples, from the urban, rural, livestock, commercial and hospital wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs) in Iran. Dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction(DLLME) combined with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry(GC–MS) was used for the extraction and determination of 4-NP and 4-t-OP. In these treatment plants, various processes such as activated sludge, aerated lagoon, moving bed biofilm reactor and activated sludge along with wetland were applied. The highest concentration of 4-NP and 4-t-OP was observed in commercial and livestock sewages. The activated sludge along with wetland and then the MBBR process showed the highest removal rates of pollutants. The rates of biodegradability and accumulation in sludge were determined and also the specific adsorption coefficient Kdand the organic carbon–water partition coefficient kOCof the sludge for APs were calculated.

Optimal strategy for treatment of sepsis based on the host inflammatory reaction and immune response

Introduction Sepsis is a common complication following infections,burns,trauma,and major operations and has become the main cause of death in non-coronary intensive care units.It was the most common reason for hospitalization(except in live born infants)in 2017,with 48.9 million cases reported worldwide.[1]A study found that sepsis led to 11.0 million deaths(which represented 19.7%of all global deaths)and has required the expenditure of 38.2 billion dollars for medical care.
