The prevalence rates of major chronic diseases in retired and in-service Chinese military officers(2000-2016): a meta-analysis

Background:Chronic diseases cause a tremendous burden to the military medical ***,the prevalence rates of major chronic diseases among military officers remain unclear in ***:China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI),Wanfang Database,VIP Database for Chinese Technical Periodicals(VIP),Pub Med and Web of Science were searched for studies(from 2000 to 2016)concerning 6 major chronic diseases:hypertension,hyperlipidemia,diabetes mellitus,heart diseases,cerebrovascular diseases,and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases(COPD)in Chinese military officers following strict inclusion and exclusion *** researchers independently extracted data from the included studies,and a fourth researcher reviewed and solved every *** analysis was performed with STATA 14.0 and R *** was evaluated by the I^2 value.A random effect model was performed to combine the heterogeneous *** Egger test was performed to test the publication ***:A total of 90,758 military officers derived from 75 articles were pooled *** bias was only observed in 37 studies reporting heart disease(P_(Egger test)=0.01).The overall prevalence rates of hypertension,hyperlipidemia,diabetes mellitus,heart diseases,cerebrovascular diseases,and COPD were 46.6%(95%CI 41.8%–51.5%),30.9%(26.4%–35.7%),20.7%(16.5%–25.7%),48.2%(41.7%–54.9%),20.2%(14.8%–26.9%)and 16.6%(12.9%–21.0%),*** prevalence rates of hypertension,diabetes,heart disease,cerebrovascular disease,and COPD,rather than hyperlipidemia,increased with age in Chinese military *** diseases(P_(Q-test)military officers,especially *** intervention s

B SUBUNIT OF CHOLERA TOXIN PRODUCED IN Escherichia coli

An engineered E. coli strain containing high expression level of CT-B subunits has beenobtained by the application of recombinant DNA techniques. The B subunit can be secretedinto the medium and reaches 20- 40 μg/ml when this strain is incubated in a 50 1 fermenta-tion tank. The CT-B subunit purified with affinity chromatography in E. coli has the samecharacters as the natural CT- B subunit in molecular weight, N terminal amino acid analysisand antigenicity. The CT-B subunit has good immunogenicity and can be used as a preparation for protect-ing against diarrhea caused by V. cholera and enterotoxigenic E. coli. It can also be usedas a vector for hepatins.

Treatment of retinopathy of prematurity: a review of conventional and promising new therapeutic options

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a retinal vascular disease of premature infants, continues to be a major cause of preventable childhood blindness all over the world. The incidence of ROP varies among countries, being influenced by the quality of the level of neonatal intensive care. Here, we discuss the potential treatments that are now available or will soon or probably be available for ROP. Although ablation of the avascular retina with laser photocoagulation remains the current gold standard and well established therapy for ROP, some new therapeutic options including angiostatic therapies are being explored based on our knowledge of the pathophysiology of the ROP and complications and efficacy of laser treatment. However, prevention of the development of severe ROP and screening for ROP seem to be the best strategy in avoiding visual impairment caused by ROP in premature infants. New therapeutic interventions including vascular endothelial growth factor antibody administration, gene therapy and supplemental therapies should be supported with evidence-based data for the treatment of ROP.

KINETIC STUDIES OF HAEMOPOIETIC PROGENITOR CELLS (CFU-C) AND T-LYMPHOCYTES IN THE LIVER OF HUMAN FOETUS

In the development of human foetus. liver is an important haemopoietic organ. Wehave determined the liver weight and total hepatic nucleated cells from 24 foetuses on the onehand, and CFU-C yield, total number of CFU-C and T-lymphocytes in liver from 22 foetuses ofdifferent ages on the other. From the kinetic observations through the early developmental period of the foetuses. themaximum yield of CFU-C or the total numer of CFU-C in the liver occurs at 4--5 months ofgestation; during the first 5 months of gestation the percentage of T-lymphocytes in the liveris about 1--2%.

Detection and quantitation of PS20, a phosphorothioate oligodeoxynucleotides in monkey plasma

AIM: To establish the method for quantitation of the phosphorothioate oligodeoxynucleotides (S-ODNs) in plasma. METHODS: Two solid-phase extraction columns combined with a strong anion-exchange column were utilized to remove proteins and lipids in plasma, and the salts were removed by a reverse-phase column followed by dialysis with a 2500 Da-cutoff membrane. The concentration of the tested S-ODNs, PS20, and its metabolites extracted from the plasma were determined by the method of non-gel sieving capillary electrophoresis (NGCE) with diode array detection in the presence of internal standard (IS). RESULTS: The method was with good base number specificity. Relative standard deviation % of both intra and inter assay were all less than 10 %, and the total mean recovery was about 91 %. The methodology was successfully used to determine the PK behavior of an anti-tumor antisense S-ODNs in monkeys and identify the metabolites with single base difference. CONCLUSION: The combined method of solid-phase extraction and NGCE could be used to study the pharmacokinetics of S-ODNs, and the main parameters of the methodology met the requirement of PK study.

Photoelectrochemical performance of TiO_(2) nanotube arrays by in situ decoration with different initial states

Here,carbon dots(CDs) only or nanocomposites of CDs and TiO_(2)(CDs-TiO_(2)) were used to decorate titanium dioxide nanotube arrays(TiO_(2)NTs) in situ by solvothermal *** initial states of TiO_(2)NTs were prepared for contrast,including the amorphous TiO_(2)NTs(TiO_(2)NTs-0) just experienced anodic oxidation process and that further calcined TiO_(2)NTs(TiO_(2)NTs-450).It was found that the newborn CDs or CDs-TiO_(2)were more likely to anchor on TiO_(2)NTs-0 than the calcined TiO_(2)NTs-450,and more Ti-C bonds were found in the composites which were derived from TiO_(2)NTs-0 after the solvothermal *** evident photocurrent could be demonstrated for either CDs or CDs-TiO_(2)decorated TiO_(2)NTs once exposed to visible *** CDs-TiO_(2)NTs-0 showed the highest photocurrent density(4.51 μA·cm^(-2)).However,the results of photodegradation measurements revealed that CDs-TiO_(2)decorated TiO_(2)NTs with different initial states(especially CDs-TiO_(2)-TiO_(2)NTs-0) showed more excellent photocatalytic activity under both ultraviolet(UV) and visible light illumination.

Production of human liver prolidase by Saccharomyces cerevisiae as host cells

AIM: To clone and express the recombinant human liver prolidase in yeast and explore the activities of both dipeptidaseand organophosphoric acid anhydrolase(OPAA). METHODS:The cDNAencodinghuman liver prolidase derived from healthy adult liver was cloned into the pYES2, an expression vector of S cerevisiae, and then trans- formed into S cerevisiae INVSc1 by electroporation. The transformant with the highest enzymatic activity was induced by galactose for expression. The optimal induction conditions (temperature, induction time, and the initial amount of inoculation cells) were estimated by orthogonal experimental design. The recombinant prolidase and OPAA activities were assayed by spectrocolorimetric methods. RESULTS: The recombinant enzyme catalyzed the hydrolysis of organophosphorous compound soman as well as the hydrolysis of dipeptide Gly-Pro. Under the optimal induction conditions (20 h, 25 oC, initial OD600=0.4), the maximum activities of prolidase and OPAA came to 226.5 and 578 μmol·min-1·g-1 protein in cell lysate supernatants, respectively. SDS-PAGE of the recombinant enzyme in disrupted cell supernatants showed a molecular weight of 56 kDa. Intensity scanning of the SDS-PAGE gel revealed that the enzyme accounted for 3.16 % of the total protein in the supernatant. One liter incubation medium produced 7 g of wet yeast cell containing 4.56 mg of the recombination protein. CONCLUSION: The recombinant human liver prolidase produced by yeast cell (S cerevisiae) exhibited both dipeptidase and OPAA activities.

Preparation of Immobilized ε-Polylysine PET Nonwoven Fabrics and Antibacterial Activity Evaluation

A novel antibacterial material （L-PET） was prepared by immobilizing ε-polylysine on polyethylene terephthalate （PET） nonwoven fabrics. Surface modifications of the fabric were performed by using a chemical modification procedure where carboxyl groups were prepared on the PET surface, a coupling agent was grafted, and the ε-polylysine was immobilized. Scanning electron microscopy （SEM） was used to analyze the surface morphology of the fabrics, while the toluidine blue method and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS） were used to evaluate the grafting densities. The antibacterial activities of the L-PET were investigated by using the shaking-flask method. The electron micrographs showed that the surface of the blank PET and the modified fabrics did not change. The results of XPS analysis confirmed that ε-polylysine was successfully grafted onto the surface of PET. The results of the antibacterial experiments showed that L-PET fabrics had excellent antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, and that L-PET fabrics were stable in storage for at least two years.
