Colorectal cancer mortality trends in Serbia during 1991–2010:an age-period-cohort analysis and a joinpoint regression analysis

Background: For both men and women worldwide, colorectal cancer is among the leading causes of cancer-related death. This study aimed to assess the mortality trends of colorectal cancer in Serbia between 1991 and 2010, prior to the introduction of population-based ***: Joinpoint regression analysis was used to estimate average annual percent change(AAPC) with the corresponding 95% confidence interval(CI). Furthermore, age-period-cohort analysis was performed to examine the effects of birth cohort and calendar period on the observed temporal ***: We observed a significantly increased trend in colorectal cancer mortality in Serbia during the study period(AAPC = 1.6%, 95% CI 1.3%–1.8%). Colorectal cancer showed an increased mortality trend in both men(AAPC –2.2%) and women(AAPC rend of colorectal cancer mo= 2.0%, 95% CI 1.7%= 1.0%, 95% CI 0.6%–1.4%). The temporal trtality was significantly affected by birth cohort(P < 0.05), whereas the study period did not significantly affect the trend(P = 0.072). Colorectal cancer mortality increased for the first several birth cohorts in Serbia(from 1916 to 1955), followed by downward flexion for people born after the 1960 s. According to comparability test, overall mortality trends for colon cancer and rectal and anal cancer were not parallel(the final selected model rejected parallelism, P < 0.05).Conclusions: We found that colorectal cancer mortality in Serbia increased considerably over the past two decades. Mortality increased particularly in men, but the trends were different according to age group and subsite. In Serbia, interventions to reduce colorectal cancer burden, especially the implementation of a national screening program, as well as treatment improvements and measures to encourage the adoption of a healthy lifestyle, are needed.

The Coping Styles and Perception of Illness in Patients with Breast Cancer—Relation to Body Image and Type of Surgery

Breast cancer is considered one of the most frequent causes of morbidity and death in ***’response to information regarding health threats and illness can inﬂuence the adjustment of the treatment to existing conditions including the issues of non-completion of treatment or non-attendance at medical *** study aimed to examine the relationship between illness perception,body image dissatisfaction and(mal)adaptive coping styles in breast cancer patients.A sample of 197 patients with diagnosed breast cancer hospitalized at the Center for Oncology and Radiology,kragujevac,Serbia,was *** instruments included sociodemographic questionnaire,a Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire(BIPQ),a Body Image Scale(BIS),and a Mini-Mental Adjustment to Cancer Scale(Mini-MAС).Results showed that 52%of the variance of maladaptive coping style in women who underwent mastectomy was explained by the negative illness perception,while body image dissatisfaction reﬂected through this connection(CFI>.95,GFI>.95,RMSEA=.01,SRMR=.08).Similar results were found in patients with breast-conserving surgery but with lower percentage(36%)of variance explained(CFI>.95,GFI>.95,RMSEA<.02,SRMR<.05).If conﬁrmed by further studies,these results would suggest that patients who underwent mastectomy tend to be more dissatisﬁed with their body image,have tendency to perceive illness as threatening and resort to maladaptive coping ***,any form of appearance modiﬁcation,including breast-conserving surgery,carries the risk of body image dissatisfaction,and consequently the risk of maladaptive coping *** results suggest that health professionals and public policies should put an additional focus on the assessment of the patient’s body image dissatisfaction,to improve the health and wellbeing of the affected women.

Epidemiology of pancreatic cancer

Cancer of the pancreas remains one of the deadliest cancer types. Based on the GLOBOCAN 2012 estimates, pancreatic cancer causes more than 331000 deaths per year, ranking as the seventh leading cause of cancer death in both sexes together. Globally, about 338000 people had pancreatic cancer in 2012, making it the 11^(th) most common cancer. The highest incidence and mortality rates of pancreatic cancer are found in developed countries. Trends for pancreatic cancer incidence and mortality varied considerably in the world. A known cause of pancreatic cancer is tobacco smoking. This risk factor is likely to explain some of the international variations and gender differences. The overall five-year survival rate is about 6%(ranges from 2% to 9%), but this vary very small between developed and developing countries. To date, the causes of pancreatic cancer are still insufficiently known, although certain risk factors have been identified, such as smoking, obesity, genetics, diabetes, diet, inactivity. There are no current screening recommendations for pancreatic cancer, so primary prevention is of utmost importance. A better understanding of the etiology and identifying the risk factors is essential for the primary prevention of this disease.

Nitric oxide and tumour necrosis factor alpha in the process of pseudoexfoliation glaucoma

AIMTo establish the role of nitric oxide (NO), ascorbic acid and tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in the pathogenesis of pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (XFG).METHODSOur study included 120 patients who were referred for cataract surgery. All patients were divided into four groups according to clinical findings: XFG, early and late pseudoexfoliation syndrome (XFS), and cataract (without pseudoexfoliation). Serum and aqueous humour levels of the ascorbic acid, NO and TNF-α were measured. The concentrations of the ascorbic acid and NO were measured by an appropriate spectrophotometric method. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to determine TNF-α *** humour concentration of ascorbic acid was significantly lower in patients with late XFS (0.61±0.11 mmol/L) and XFG (0.48±0.15 mmol/L) compared to patients with early XFS (0.9±0.15 mmol/L) and cataract (1.16±0.22 mmol/L), while there was no difference in serum concentration in all examined groups. Aqueous humour concentration of NO was significantly higher in patients with XFG (77.7±11.4 µmol/L) compared to patients with early XFS (50.27±9.34 µmol/L) and cataract (49.77±7.1 µmol/L), while serum concentration was increased in the early stage of XFS (73.26±8.29 µmol/L). Aqueous humour level of proinflammatory cytokine TNF-α was increased in patients with XFS (early 460.04±18.32 pg/mL; late 502.42±53.23 pg/mL) and XFG (510.34±43.07 pg/mL), while there was no difference in serum level in all examined groups of *** ascorbic acid and elevated NO and inflammation related cytokine TNF-α level in aqueous humour of the patients with developed XFG suggest that oxidative stress induces local inflammation.

BACKGROUND Women with a history of serious psychotic disorders are at increased risk of disease relapse during ***-acting injectable(LAI)antipsychotics have been widely used to improve adherence and prevent relapse in patients with various severe psychotic disorders,but there is a lack of high-quality data from previous research on the safety of LAI antipsychotics during *** To summarize relevant data on maternal,pregnancy,neonatal,and developmental outcomes from published cases of LAI antipsychotic use in *** A literature search was performed through November 11,2023,using three online databases:PubMed/MEDLINE,Scopus,and Web of *** reports or case series that reported information about the outcomes of pregnancy in women who used LAI antipsychotics at any point in pregnancy,with available full texts,were *** statistics,narrative summation,and tabulation of the extracted data were *** A total of 19 publications satisfied the inclusion criteria:3 case series,15 case reports,and 1 conference *** reported the outcomes of LAI antipsychotic use in 74 women and 77 *** use of secondgeneration LAI antipsychotics was reported in the majority(n=47;61.0%)of ***-generation LAI antipsychotics were administered during 30 pregnancies(39.0%).Most of the women(approximately 64%)had either satisfactory control of symptoms or no information about relapse,while approximately 12%of them had developed gestational diabetes mellitus.A minority of cases reported adverse outcomes such as stillbirth,spontaneous abortion,preterm birth,low birth weight,congenital anomalies,and neurological manifestations in ***,there were no reports of negative long-term developmental *** Currently available data seem reassuring,but further well-designed studies are required to properly evaluate the risks and benefits of LAI antipsychotic use during pregnancy.
