BACKGROUND：Synapses undergo high levels of plasticity within the nervous system, and cerebral ischemia induces synaptic plasticity ***：To demonstrate the effects of electroacupuncture on ultrastructural synaptic changes in the focal cerebral ischemia marginal zone in rats using quantitative analysis of stereological ***, TIME AND SETTING：A randomized, controlled, animal experiment was performed at the Experimental Animal Center and Laboratory of Electron Microscopy, Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from January 2008 to January ***：The G-6805 electric acupuncture apparatus was provided by Shanghai Huayi Instrument Factory, ***：A total of 90 male, Wistar rats were randomly assigned to sham-surgery, model, and electroacupuncture groups, with 30 animals in each group. Each group was subdivided into 1 hour, as well as 1, 3, 7, and 21 days post-surgery groups, with six animals assigned to each time point. Heat coagulation-induced occlusion of the middle cerebral artery was performed to establish a model of focal cerebral ischemia. Electroacupuncture was applied immediately following surgery to the electroacupuncture group [4/20 Hz, 2.0-3.0 V, 1-3 mA, to Baihui （GV 20） and Dazhui （GV 14）] for 30 minutes. Cone-beam CT (CBCT) images acquired during radiation treatment can be used to recalculate the dose distribution as well as to confirm the treatment location. However, it is difficult to obtain the electron densities (EDs) necessary for dose calculation from CBCT images because of the effects of scatter contamination during CBCT image acquisition. This paper presents a mathematical method for converting the pixel values of CBCT images (CBCT values) into Hounsfield units (HUs) of radiation treatment simulation CT (simCT) images for use in radiation treatment planning. CBCT values are converted into HUs by matching the histograms of the CBCT values with the histograms of the HUs for each slice via linear scaling of the CBCT values. For prostate cancer and head-and-neck cancer patients, the EDs obtained from converted CBCT values (mCBCT values) show good agreement with the EDs obtained from HUs, within approximately 3.0%, and the dose calculated on the basis of CBCT images shows good agreement with the dose calculated on the basis of the simCT images, within approximately 2.0%. Because the CBCT values are converted for each slice, this conversion method can account for variation in the CBCT values associated with differences in body size, body shape, and inner tissue structures, as well as in longitudinally displaced positions from the isocenter, unlike conventional methods that use electron density phantoms. This method improves on conventional CBCT-ED conversion and shows considerable potential for improving the accuracy of radiation treatment planning using CBCT images.

Selenium and zinc are used as anionic and cationic dopant elements to dope PbS nanostructures. The undoped and doped PbS nanostructures are grown using a thermal evaporation method. Scanning electron microscopy （SEM） results show similar morphologies for the undoped and doped PbS nanostructures. X-ray diffraction （XRD） patterns of three sets of the nanostructures indicate that these nanostructures each have a PbS structure with a cubic phase. Evidence of dopant incorporation is demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS）. Raman spectra of the synthesized samples con- firm the XRD results and indicate five Raman active modes, which relate to the PbS cubic phase for all the nanostructures. Room temperature photoluminescence （PL） and UV-Vis spectrometers are used to study optical properties of the undoped and doped PbS nanostructures. Optical characterization shows that emission and absorption peaks are in the infrared （IR） region of the electromagnetic spectrum for all PbS nanostructures. In addition, the optical studies of the doped PbS nanos- tructures reveal that the band gap of the Se-doped PbS is smaller, and the band gap of the Zn-doped PbS is bigger than the band gap of the undoped PbS nanostructures.

Assessing the Impacts of Climate Change and Variability on Maize (Zea mays) Yield over Tanzania

This study aimed at understanding the impacts of the seasonal hydroclimatic variables on maize yield and developing of statistical crop model for future maize yield prediction over Tanzania. The food security of the country is basically determined by availability of maize. Unfortunately, agriculture over the country is mainly rain fed hence highly endangered by the detrimental consequences of climate change and variability. Observed climate data was acquired from Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) and Maize yield data from Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The study used the Mann-Kendall test and Sen’s slope for trend and magnitude detection in minimum, maximum temperature and rainfall at the 95% confidence level. The results have shown that rainfall is decreasing over the country and especially during the growing season but increasing during short rains season. Characteristics of seasonal climatic variables, cycle during growing period were linked to maize yield, and high (low) yield was reported during anomalous wet (dry) growing seasons. This portrays seasonal dependence of maize production. Statistical crop model was built by aggregating spatial regions that have statistically significant relation with maize yield. Results show that, 58.8% of yield variance is linked to seasonal hydroclimate variability. Rainfall emerged as the dominant predictor variable for maize yield since it accounts for 44.1% of yield variance. The modeled and observed yields exhibit statistically substantial relationship (r = 0.78) hence depicting high credence of the built statistical crop model. Also, the results revealed a decreasing trend in Maize yield with further Lessing trend is projected to proceed in the future. This calls for adaptation and implementation of appropriate regional measures to raise maize production in order to feed the burgeoning human population amidst climate change.

Introduction: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is a public health problem of concern. Anti-retroviral therapy (ART) is associated with multiple side effects. This study aimed at identifying the different hepatic manifestations of antiretroviral therapy and the responsible molecules. Patients and Methods: This was an eight months period prospective descriptive study, from January 1st to August 31st, 2015, conducted in the Department of Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine at the Brazzaville University Teaching Hospital. Study participants were treatment-na?ve HIV patients who were initiated on ART treatment during the study period. Patients with liver disease, liver cytolysis prior to initiation of therapy, and those with alternative therapy that may cause hepatotoxicity were excluded. The sample size was 110 patients. Results: The age was ranging from 25 to 70 years with a mean age of 47.5 ± 7.5 years. During the six months of follow-up, the alarming hepatic signs were observed in 26.36% of cases (n = 29) in the 3rd month of treatment. There was no observed alarming sign in the 6th month of follow-up. The cytolytic pattern was observed in 54.55% of cases (n = 60) in the 3rd month. The cholestatic pattern was observed in 6.36% of cases (n = 7) in the 3rd month. Triple therapy combination of Zidovudine, Lamivudine and Nevirapine (AZT + 3TC + NVP) was the most used in 57.27% (n = 63) with a statistically significant p value to the occurrence of cytolytic pattern (p Conclusion: Drug induced liver toxicity occurs in a significant number of patients starting ART. The prevalence of hepatic events was high at the third month of treatment and the triple therapy of Zidovudine, Lamivudine and Nevirapine (AZT + 3TC + NVP) was the most incriminated.

背景:发展并使用一种用于研究结核分支杆菌基因差异的聚合酶链反应(PCR)设计:结核分支杆菌H_(37)Rv的两个多态性DNA片段被鉴定和测序。然后引物被设计以用于对两个多态性片段同时进行扩增。该方法被用于研究179例临床结核菌分离株,这些菌株以前曾用IS6110的Southern杂交鉴定。结果:两个多态性片段均含有直接重复序列。其中一个片段的直接重复序列位于α-异丙基苹果酸酯合成酶基因的编码序列之间。179个菌株的两个片段经过扩增后,PCR产物的40个型能够被鉴定。该方法能够将38个IS6110单带菌株区分为23个型。属于北京家族的菌株中的大多数具有与H_(37)Rv相同的PCR产物。Nonthaburi组成员的PCR产物彼此间是相似的。结论:这些结果符合北京家族和Nonthaburi组成员起源于两个共同祖先的假说。该PCR方法可能有助于对含IS6110单拷贝的结核菌菌株进行区分。
