Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by periodontopathic bacteria that affects periodontal support tissues.1 If left untreated,it results in loss of periodontal attachment and alveolar bone *** one-half of adults in the United States older than 30 years have periodontal disease.2 Though the disease is initiated by bacterial infection,it activates host defense systems that eventually lead to the degradation of the *** periodontitis,the disease progress involves further production of pro-inflammatory mediators such as cytokines,proteolytic enzymes like matrix metalloproteinases(MMPs),and their inhibitors.

To editor:Wernicke encephalopathy(WE)is an acute neurological disorder caused by a deficiency of vitamin B1(thiamine),with a prevalence of 1.3%in autopsy studies.1 Eighty-four percent of patients with WE will develop Korsakoff syndrome,which is characterized by amnesia and confusion.2 Although WE is more common in alcoholics,it can also be caused by vomiting,malnourishment,and other situations.

Discontinuation of therapy in inflammatory bowel disease: Current views

Antioxidants Enzymes Activities and NO Levels in Hemodialysis and Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis—A Comparative Study

It consists of a retrospective study with twenty-two individuals diagnosed with DRC: fourteen HD and eight CAPD, followed up in the dialysis center of antonio pedro University hospital (HUAP) of Fluminense Federal University (UFF), between 2015 and 2017. Fifteen healthy control (HC) subjects were included, without diagnosed CKD. Patients with HIV positive, hepatitis A, B, and C, pregnant, cancer, smokers, alcoholics and those exposed to X-rays in the last 3 months, were excluded. Objectives: As oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction may be linked to the higher prevalence of CVD in CKD patients, we measured the activities of the antioxidants enzymes: SOD and GPx and total NO levels in the plasma and serum of end-stage CKD patients undergoing dialysis therapy, comparing with the HC group. Methods: Quantification of NO levels was performed by fluorometric kit, while activities of SOD and GPx were determined using kinetic methods. Results: We found higher plasma SOD activity in HD (8.58 U/ml) and CAPD (10.14 U/ml), compared to C (3.73 U/ml) group, while GPx activity was decreased in HD (115.38 nmol/h/ml) and CAPD (122.76 nmol/h/ml) groups compared to HC group (275.83 nmol/h/ml). Total serum NO concentration was decreased in HD (14.09 pmol/μl) and CAPD (10.26 pmol/μl), compared to non-CKD patients (49.65 pmol/μl). Conclusion: Decreased total serum NO and GPx activities may lead to endothelial dysfunction and consequently a higher prevalence of CVD in CKD patients.

Dear Editor,Kras and p53 mutation are among the most common gene mutations in lung cancer,which has both the highest incidence and mortality rate among cancers.1 Kras/p53 mutation also causes mitochondrial dysfunction,which has been implicated to promote the inflammation-to-cancer transition.2 We established a lung adenocarcinoma model by using conditional alleles of KrasLSLG12D/p53flox/flox in mice3 to evaluate the effect of Baicalein(5,6,7-trihydroxyflavone),a principal component of Scutellaria baicalensis in traditional Chinese medicine,4 on the initiation and progression of lung ***-mediated expression of KrasG12D and deletion of p53 caused obvious tumor lesions in the lung,which were strongly inhibited by the administration of Baicalein(Fig.1a,b and Supplementary Fig.1a,b),indicating that Baicalein is highly potent in inhibiting the progression of primary lung cancer.

Dear Editor,Tumor-associated macrophages(TAMs)are critical pro-tumor immunocytes and depletion of TAMs has been exploited for cancer therapy.1 However,the phenotypes and functions of TAMs are plastic,TAMs can also be effector cells by engulfing tumor cells and recruiting cytotoxic T cells,thus shaping the actions of TAMs is more scientific rational than depleting them indiscriminately.2 To promote the entry of reorienting TAMs into the clinical treatments of tumors,it is essential to explore the underline mechanisms controlling the anti-and pro-tumor activities of TAMs.
