Revealing the residual stress distribution in laser welded Eurofer97 steel by neutron diffraction and Bragg edge imaging

Eurofer97 steel is a primary structural material for applications in fusion reactors. Laser welding is a promising technique to join Eurofer97 plasma-facing components and overcome remote handling and maintenance challenges. The interaction of the induced residual stress and the heterogeneous microstructure degrades the mechanical performance of such fusion components. The present study investigates the distribution of residual stress in as-welded and post-heat treated Eurofer97 joints. The mechanistic connections between microstructure, material properties, and residual stress are also studied. Neutron diffraction is used to study the through-thickness residual stress distribution in three directions,and neutron Bragg edge imaging(NBEI) is applied to study the residual strain in high spatial resolution.The microstructures and micro-hardness are characterised by electron backscatter diffraction and nanoindentation, respectively. The M-shaped residual stress distribution through the thickness of the as-welded weldment is observed by neutron diffraction line scans over a region of 1.41 × 10 mm^(2). These profiles are cross-validated over a larger area(∼56 × 40 mm^(2)) with the higher spatial resolution by NBEI. The micro-hardness value in the fusion zone of the as-welded sample almost doubles from 2.75 ± 0.09 GPa to 5.06 ± 0.29 GPa due to a combination of residual stress and cooling-induced martensite. Conventional post weld heat treatment(PWHT) is shown to release ∼90% of the residual stress but not fully restore the microstructure. By comparing its hardness with that of stress-free samples, it is found that the microstructure is the primary contribution to the hardening. This study provides insight into the prediction of structural integrity for critical structural components of fusion reactors.

Oxygen(O_(2))-sensing matrices are promising tools for the live monitoring of extracellular O_(2) consumption levels in long-term cell cultures.In this study,ratiometric O_(2)-sensing membranes were prepared by electrospinning,an easy,low-cost,scalable,and robust method for fabricating nanofibers.Poly(ε-caprolactone)and poly(dimethyl)siloxane polymers were blended with tris(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline)ruthenium(II)dichloride,which was used as the O_(2)-sensing probe,and rhodamine B isothiocyanate,which was used as the reference dye.The functionalized scaffolds were morphologically characterized by scanning electron microscopy,and their physicochemical profiles were obtained by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,thermogravimetric analysis,and water contact angle measurement.The sensing capabilities were investigated by confocal laser scanning microscopy,performing photobleaching,reversibility,and calibration curve studies toward different dissolved O_(2)(DO)concentrations.Electrospun sensing nanofibers showed a high response to changes in DO concentrations in the physiological-pathological range from 0.5%to 20%and good stability under ratiometric imaging.In addition,the sensing systems were highly biocompatible for cell growth promoting adhesiveness and growth of three cancer cell lines,namely metastatic melanoma cell line SK-MEL2,breast cancer cell line MCF-7,and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma cell line Panc-1,thus recreating a suitable biological environment in vitro.These O_(2)-sensing biomaterials can potentially measure alterations in cell metabolism caused by changes in ambient O_(2)content during drug testing/validation and tissue regeneration processes.

We evaluate and demonstrate ultra-broadband near-infrared noncollinear optical parametric amplification in two nonlinear crystals,bismuth borate(Bi BO)and yttrium calcium oxyborate(YCOB),which are not commonly used for this application.The spectral bandwidth is of the microjoule level;the amplified signal is≥200 nm,capable of supporting sub-10 fs pulses.These results,supported by numerical simulations,show that these crystals have a great potential as nonlinear media in both low-energy,few-cycle systems and high peak power amplifiers for terawatt to petawatt systems based on noncollinear optical parametric chirped pulse amplification(NOPCPA)or a hybrid.

Giant mid-IR resonant coupling to molecular vibrations in sub-nm gaps of plasmonic multilayer metafilms

Nanomaterials capable of confining light are desirable for enhancing spectroscopies such as Raman scattering,infrared absorption,and nonlinear optical processes.Plasmonic superlattices have shown the ability to host collective resonances in the mid-infrared,but require stringent fabrication processes to create well-ordered structures.Here,we demonstrate how short-range-ordered Au nanoparticle multilayers on a mirror,self-assembled by a sub-nm molecular spacer,support collective plasmon-polariton resonances in the visible and infrared,continuously tunable beyond 11 pm by simply varying the nanoparticle size and number of layers.The resulting molecule-plasmon system approaches vibrational strong coupling,and displays giant Fano dip strengths,SEIRA enhancement factors~106,light-matter coupling strengths g~100 cm-1,Purcell factors~106,and mode volume compression factors~108.The collectiive plasmon-polariton mode is highly robust to nanoparticle vacancy disorder and is sustained by the consistent gap size defined by the molecular spacer.Structural disorder efficiently couples light into the gaps between the multilayers and mirror,enabling Raman and infrared sensing of sub-picolitre sample volumes.

Assessing the effects of alternative fuel treatments to reduce wildfire exposure

Effective landscape-scale fuel management strategies are essential for reducing wildfire risk in mediterranean fire-prone areas.In this study,the minimum travel time(MTT)fire-spread algorithm as implemented in FlamMap was applied to assess the potential of alternative fuel treatments for lowering wildfire losses in a 5,740-ha study area in eastern Sardinia,Italy.Twenty-seven wildfires at 10-m resolution were simulated considering three wind speeds(15,18,and 21 km h-1)to compare fuel treatments:no treatment(NT),irrigated agroforestry areas with shrub clearing(T1),prescribed fire in eucalyptus stands(T2),and irrigated grasslands(T3).The simulations replicated a recent large wildfire that occurred in the study area(Orrìwildfire,2019)and considered the weather and fuel moisture conditions associated with this event.The average wildfire exposure outputs(burned area,probability of burning,conditional flame length,potential crown fire occurrence,and surfaces withflame lengths above 2.5 m)decreased after fuel treatments,compared to no treatment.T1 was the most effective strategy in mitigating wildfire hazards and provided the most significant performance for several wildfire exposure indicators.Treating only 0.5%of the study area(~30 ha)resulted in a decrease in all wildfire exposure metrics to~10%within the study area.In addition,the total surface characterized by high flame length(average>2.5 m)was the lowest in the T1 treatment.This study can help land and fire managers optimize fuel treatment opportunities and wildfire risk mitigation strategies in mediterranean areas.

A petawatt facility fully based on noncollinear optical parametric chirped pulse amplification(NOPCPA)technology,Vulcan OPPEL(Vulcan OPCPA PEtawatt Laser),is presented.This system will be coupled with the existing hybridCPA/OPCPA VULCAN laser system(500 J,500 fs beamline;250 J,ns regime beamline)based on Nd:glass amplification.Its pulse duration(20 times shorter)combined with the system design will allow the auxiliary beamline and its secondary sources to be used as probe beams for longer pulses and their interactions with targets.The newly designed system will be mainly dedicated to electron beam generation,but could also be used to perform a variety of particle acceleration and optical radiation detection experimental campaigns.In this communication,we present the entire beamline design discussing the technology choices and the design supported by extensive simulations for each system section.Finally,we present experimental results and details of our commissioned NOPCPA picosecond front end,delivering 1.5 mJ,~180 nm(1/e^(2))of bandwidth compressed to sub-15 fs.

High efficiency second harmonic generation of nanojoule-level femtosecond pulses in the visible based on BiBO

We demonstrate high efficiency second harmonic generation(SHG) of near infrared femtosecond pulses using a BiB3 O6 crystal in a single-pass tight focusing geometry setup. A frequency doubling efficiency of 63% is achieved, which is,to the best of our knowledge, the highest value ever reported in the femtosecond regime for such low energy(nJ-level)pumping pulses. Theoretical analyses of the pumping scheme focusing waist and the SHG efficiency are performed, by numerically solving the three wave mixing coupled equations in the plane-wave scenario and by running simulations with a commercial full 3 D code. Simulations show a good agreement with the experimental data regarding both the efficiency and the pulse spectral profile. The simulated SHG pulse temporal profile presents the characteristic features of the group velocity mismatch broadening in a ‘thick' crystal.

We investigated the polaron-assisted nonadiabatic dynamics in protonated TiO_(2),as well as the polaron-H_(2)O coupling and its effects on the relaxation of photogenerated electrons.We observed that different polaron hopping regimes result in varied nonadiabatic couplings and relaxations of excited electrons from the conduction band minimum to the gap states of protonated TiO_(2),with a weak dependence on the actual trapping site of the polaron.Surface-adsorbed H_(2)O molecules can attract polarons toward the adsorbed Ti sites,with the coupling between H_(2)O and the polaron being inversely proportional to their distance.Our findings suggest that the lifetime of the photogenerated charge carriers can be extended by reducing the polaron-H_(2)O distances,with expected benefits to the efficiency of the reduced TiO 2 samples for photocatalytic applications.

The increased number of data repositories has greatly increased the availability of open data.To enable broad discovery and access to research dataset,some data repositories have begun leveraging the web architecture by embedding structured metadata markup in dataset web landing pages using vocabularies from *** and extensions.This paper aims to examine metadata interoperability for supporting global data discovery.Specifically,the paper reports a survey on which metadata schema has been adopted by participating data repositories,and presents an analysis of crosswalks from fourteen research data schemas to ***.The analysis indicates most descriptive metadata are interoperable among the schemas,the most inconsistent mapping is the rights metadata,and a large gap exists in the structural metadata and controlled vocabularies to specify various property values.The analysis and collated crosswalks can serve as a reference for data repositories when they develop crosswalks from their own schemas to ***,and provide the research data community a benchmark of structured metadata implementation.

Design and fabrication of gas cell targets for laboratory astrophysics experiments on the Orion high-power laser facility

This paper describes the design and fabrication of a range of ‘gas cell' microtargets produced by the Target Fabrication Group in the Central Laser Facility(CLF) for academic access experiments on the Orion laser facility at the Atomic Weapons Establishment(AWE). The experiments were carried out by an academic consortium led by Imperial College London. The underlying target methodology was an evolution of a range of targets used for experiments on radiative shocks and involved the fabrication of a precision machined cell containing a number of apertures for interaction foils or diagnostic windows. The interior of the cell was gas-filled before laser irradiation. This paper details the assembly processes, thin film requirements and micro-machining processes needed to produce the targets. Also described is the implementation of a gas-fill system to produce targets that are filled to a pressure of 0.1–1 bar. The paper discusses the challenges that are posed by such a target.
