AIM:To study the association between the incidence of gastric cancer and populational exposure to risk/protective factors through an analysis of international ***:Open-access global databases concerning the incidence of gastric cancer and its risk/protective factors were identified through an extensive search on the *** its distribution was neither normal nor symmetric,the cancer incidence of each country was categorized according to ranges of percentile *** association of each risk/protective factor with exposure was measured between the extreme ranges of the incidence of gastric cancer(under the 25th percentile and above the 75th percentile)by the use of the Mann-Whitney test,considering a significance level ***:A variable amount of data omission was observed among all of the factors under study.A weak or nonexistent correlation between the incidence of gastric cancer and the study variables was shown by a visual analysis of scatterplot *** contrast,an analysis of categorized incidence revealed that the countries with the highest human development index(HDI)values had the highest rates of obesity in males and the highest consumption of alcohol,tobacco,fruits,vegetables and meat,which were associated with higher incidences of gastric *** was no significant difference for the risk factors of obesity in females and fish ***:Higher HDI values,coupled with a higher prevalence of male obesity and a higher per capita consumption of alcohol,tobacco,fruits,vegetables and meat,are associated with a higher incidence of gastric cancer based on an analysis of populational global data.

The focus of this study was to investigate the wide use of Eucalyptus spp.,an exotic plant with high allelopathic ability,in the reforestation programs of urban parks in são Paulo City,Brazil,over the last *** understand the implications of using Eucalyptus *** the city’s parks,this study aimed to compare nutrient cycling and litter decomposition between a mixed composition of litter(i.e.,native and exotic species)and the litter of a single species(i.e.,Eucalyptus).To accomplish this,newly deciduous leaves were collected from two native and two exotic species that are commonly used in the afforestation of são Paulo as well as from Eucalyptus *** mixed composition of litter yielded a higher dry mass loss and return of macro-and micronutrients to the forest *** decomposition constant(k)values were 0.00322 and 0.00207 g g^(−1) day^(−1) for the mixed composition and Eucalyptus spp.,*** time required for decomposition of 50 and 95%of deciduous material was 215 and 931 days,respectively,and for the mixed litterfall 334 and 1449 days,respectively,for Eucalyptus ***,the mixed litter exhibited greater dry mass loss and nutrient cycling in an urban forest of são Paulo City,since dry mass losses as well as speed and amount of nutrients returned to the forest floor were relatively higher compared to Eucalyptus *** cycling via Eucalyptus *** was less efficient than mixed composition of litter,demonstrating that reforestation programs carried out in the twentieth century using only one species may have had little *** results of this work emphasize the fact that in urban reforestation programs the City of são Paulo must consider the environmental and biogeographic characteristics of the species employed and use high levels of biodiversity,since the city lies in a megadiverse biome.

Recognizing Brazilian Cerrado Enclaves by Modeling geoenvironmental Parameters

This work focused on the prediction modeling of Cerrado occurrences in the Atlantic Rainforest predominance in the são Paulo Metropolitan Region (sPMR), the fourth largest urban area, in the city of Guarulhos, southeastern Brazil. The methodology was based on the selection of records of occurrence of Cerrado in georeferenced databases, thematic maps of geoenvironmental layers, and modeling of the distribution of species through the MaxEnt tool. Besides that, field research confirmed the presence or not of the species in the areas with a high probability of occurrence of Cerrado (≥0.7). As a result, the model observed a great capacity for the prediction of the occurrence of Cerrado in Ecotonal and anthropic regions (AUC = 0.82), revealing important hotspots such as relics from the past or Cerrado enclaves of high biodiversity. The work also points priority areas for the conservation and preservation of this increasingly endangered biome.

analysis of diffusion-adsorption equivalency of landfill liner systems for organic contaminants

The equivalence between multilayered barriers regarding diffusion and adsorption was studied. The bottom boundary of the liner system is defined by assuming concentration continuous and flux continuous conditions of the contaminant between the bottom liner layer and the underlying soil. Five different liner systems were compared in terms of solute breakthrough time. The results of the analysis showed that breakthrough time of the hydrophobic organic compounds for a 2-meter-thick compacted clay liner （CCL） could be 3-4 orders of magnitude is greater than the breakthrough time for a geosynthetic clay liner （GCL） composite liner. The GM/GCL and GM/CCL composite liner systems provide a better diffusion barrier for the hydrophilic organic compounds than that for the hydrophobic compounds due to their different Henry＇s coefficient. The calculated breakthrough times of the organic contaminants for the Chinese standard liner systems were found to be generally greater than those for the GCL alternatives, for the specific conditions examined. If the distribution coefficient increases to 2.8 for the hydrophobic compounds or 1.0 for the hydrophilic compounds, the thickness of the attenuation layer needed to achieve the same breakthrough time as the standard liner systems can be reduced by a factor of about 1.9-2.4. As far as diffusive and adsorption contaminant transport are concerned, GM or GCL is less effective than CCL.

shear wave velocity-based liquefaction evaluation in the great Wenchuan earthquake: a preliminary case study

The great Wenchuan earthquake （Ms= 8.0） in 2008 caused severe damage in the western part of the Chengdu Plain. soil liquefaction was one of the major causes of damage in the plain areas, and proper evaluation of liquefaction potential is important in the definition of the seismic hazard facing a given region and post-earthquake reconstruction. In this paper, a simplified procedure is proposed for liquefaction assessment of sandy deposits using shear wave velocity （V）, and soil liquefaction from the Banqiao school site was preliminarily investigated after the earthquake. Boreholes were made at the site and shear wave velocities were measured both by sAsW and down-hole methods. Based on the in-situ soil information and V profiles, the liquefaction potential of this site was evaluated. The results are reasonably consistent with the actual field behavior observed after the earthquake, indicating that the proposed procedure is effective. The possible effects of gravel and fines contents on liquefaction of sandy soils were also briefly discussed.

seminal vesicles and diabetic neuropathy： ultrasound evaluation in patients with couple infertility and different levels of glycaemic control

The aim of this study was to evaluate the ultrasound characteristics of the seminal vesicles （sVs） of infertile patients with diabetes mellitus （DM） and diabetic neuropathy （DN） and to investigate possible changes in ultrasound characteristics related to glycaemic control. To accomplish this, 45 infertile patients with type 2 DM and symptomatic DN were selected. Twenty healthy fertile men and 20 patients with idiopathic oligoasthenoteratozoospermia without DM represented the control groups. DM patients were arbitrarily divided into three groups according to glycaemic control level （A=glycosylated haemoglobin 〈7%; B =glycosylated haemoglobin between 7% and 10%; C=glycosylated haemoglobin 〉 10%）. Patients underwent prostate-vesicular transrectal ultrasonography and sperm analysis. The following sV ultrasound parameters were recorded：（i） body antero-posterior diameter （APD）; （ii） fundus APD; （iii） parietal thicknesses of the right and left sVs; and （iv） the number of polycyclic areas within both sVs. We then calculated the following parameters：（i） fundus/body （F/B） ratio; （ii） difference of the parietal thickness between the right and the left sV; and （iii） pre- and post-ejaculatory APD difference. All DM patients had a higher FIB ratio compared to controls （P〈0.05）. Group C had a higher FIB ratio compared to the other DM groups （P〈0.05）. All DM patients had a lower pre- and post-ejaculatory difference of the body sV APD compared to controls （P〈0.05）. Groups A and B had a similar pre- and post-ejaculatory difference of the body sV APD, whereas this difference was lower in Group C （P〈0.05）. In conclusion, infertile DM patients with DN showed peculiar sV ultrasound features suggestive of functional atony, and low glycaemic control was associated with greater expression of these features.

Pseudo-dynamic analysis of overturning stability of retaining wall

A new method was presented to determine the safety factor of wall stability against overturning based on pseudo-dynamic approach. In this time-dependent method, the actual dynamic effect with variation of time and propagation of shear and primary wave velocities through the backfills was considered. Planar failure surface was considered behind the retaining wall. The results were compared with those obtained from Mononobe-Okabe theory. It is found that there is a higher value of safety factor by the present dynamic analysis. The effects of wall inclination, wall friction angle, soil friction angle and horizontal and vertical seismic coefficients on the overturning stability of retaining wall were investigated. The parametric study shows that both horizontal and vertical seismic accelerations have decreasing effect on the overturning stability of retaining wall.

seismic stability and permanent displacement of landfill along liners

The three-part wedge limit equilibrium method for seismic stability analysis of the landfill along liners is presented. The approximate solutions of the factor of safety and the yield acceleration coefficient are obtained. Parametric studies show that the interface strength of liners, the shear strength of waste and the height of retaining wall can influence the seismic stability of landfill along liners. The density and the shear wave velocity of the field waste are obtained by the borehole investigation and the spectral analysis of surface wave (sAsW), respectively. The strain-dependent shear modulus and damping ratio of the artifical waste are obtained by the moderate-scale dynamic triaxial tests. The onedimensional (1D) equivalent linear dynamic response analysis is used to calculate the horizontal equivalent seismic coefficient-time history of the sliding landfill during earthquake. The seismic permanent displacement of the landfill along liners with different site conditons and heights is evaluated by the Newmark method. The catculated results show that ratio of ky /kmax, site conditions, the amplitude and frequency content of the bedrock motion can affect the seismic permanent displacement of the landfill along liners in some degree. Finally, the seismic stability and permanent displacements of three expanded configurations of a certain landfill case are analyzed.

Analytical modeling of sandwich beam for piezoelectric bender elements

Piezoelectric bender elements are widely used as electromechanical sensors and actuators, An analytical sandwich beam model for piezoelectric bender elements was developed based on the first-order shear deformation theory （FsDT）, which assumes a single rotation angle for the whole cross-section and a quadratic distribution function for coupled electric potential in piezoelectric layers, and corrects the effect of transverse shear strain on the electric displacement integration. Free vibration analysis of simplysupported bender elements was carried out and the numerical results showed that, solutions of the present model for various thickness-to-length ratios are compared well with the exact two-dimensional solutions, which presents an efficient and accurate model for analyzing dynamic electromechanical responses of bender elements.

Prediction and diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases(CVDs)based,among other things,on medical examinations and patient symptoms are the biggest challenges in *** 17.9 million people die from CVDs annually,accounting for 31%of all deaths *** a timely prognosis and thorough consideration of the patient’s medical history and lifestyle,it is possible to predict CVDs and take preventive measures to eliminate or control this life-threatening *** this study,we used various patient datasets from a major hospital in the United states as prognostic factors for *** data was obtained by monitoring a total of 918 patients whose criteria for adults were 28-77 years *** this study,we present a data mining modeling approach to analyze the performance,classification accuracy and number of clusters on Cardiovascular Disease Prognostic datasets in unsupervised machine learning(ML)using the Orange data mining *** techniques are then used to classify the model parameters,such as k-nearest neighbors,support vector machine,random forest,artificial neural network(ANN),naïve bayes,logistic regression,stochastic gradient descent(sGD),and *** determine the number of clusters,various unsupervised ML clustering methods were used,such as k-means,hierarchical,and density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise *** results showed that the best model performance analysis and classification accuracy were sGD and ANN,both of which had a high score of 0.900 on Cardiovascular Disease Prognostic *** on the results of most clustering methods,such as k-means and hierarchical clustering,Cardiovascular Disease Prognostic datasets can be divided into two *** prognostic accuracy of CVD depends on the accuracy of the proposed model in determining the diagnostic *** more accurate the model,the better it can predict which patients are at risk for CVD.
