Effect of the concentration ratios of organosiloxane/initiator and treatment temperature on the characteristics of hydrophobic products obtained by modification of surface of fumed silica with poly(methylphenylsiloxane) (PMPS) in the presence of dimethyl carbonate has been studied. Morphology, particle size, surface area and coating microstructure of modified silicas were analyzed by methods of transmission electron and atomic force microscopies, nitrogen adsorption-desorption data. Carbon contents in the grafted modifying layer of organosilicas were determined using IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Hydrophilic-hydrophobic properties of surface of the obtained modified silicas were estimated by measurements of contact angles of wetting. It was shown that modification of pyrogenic silicas with mixtures of poly(methylphenylsiloxane) and dimethyl carbonate allows to obtain the homogeneous hydrophobic products and serve their nanodispersity.

Raipur is a fast growing city in central India due to being commercial centre for the steel, cement and forest products of the country. Large quantity (≈300 million lit/day) of untreated sewage waste water is discharged into seven reservoirs located in the city. Sewage carries excessive nutrients, heavy metals, organics, bacteria, yeast and fungi by leaking contents into the drinking water which cause acute health problems, ranging from common diarrhoea to deadly diseases such as hepatitis, cholera, typhoid fever, etc. Therefore, in this work, the microbial and chemical contamination of sewage waste of Raipur city, Chhattisgarh, India is described.

We report generation of sub-100 fs pulses tunable from 1700 to 2100 nm via Raman soliton self-frequency *** nonlinear shift occurs in a highly nonlinear fiber, which is pumped by an Er-doped fiber laser. The whole system is fully fiberized, without the use of any free-space optics. Thanks to its exceptional simplicity, the setup can be considered as an alternative to mode-locked Tm-and Ho-doped fiber lasers.

Here we summarize and discuss the body of information concerning mechanisms and regulation of local short-duration preconditioning that may accompany experimental radiation therapy. Based on the results of our previous studies in vivo we investigated possible impact of local temporary ischemia on the effectiveness of ionizing radiation-based anti-cancer therapy. We used total body-irradiated or abdomen only-irradiated healthy rats. Chosen blood parameters, changes in bone marrow cytological picture as well as histological picture of the small intestine were used as toxicity markers. We found a significant transient modification in lipid peroxides, triglycerides, uric acid concentration, SOD isoenzymes activity in the rat serum, increased numbers of small intestine crypts and suppression of bone marrow polychromatic erythrocytes and polychromatic erythrocytes with micronuclei. No significant differences were observed in MnSOD isoenzyme activity in serum and in small intestine homogenates after local temporary ischemia, nor after irradiation, nor combined treatment. Some differences were observed in intestinal tissue CuZnSOD activities. Nevertheless, great variations in response to ischemia, radiation or combined treatment was noted concerning this parameter. Histological picture of the small intestine from ionizing radiation-treated rats has indicated a marked protection of crypt survival by local temporary ischemic preconditioning. Some of the ionizing radiation-caused toxic effects were reduced in animals treated with local ischemic preconditioning. Together, these results provide a new insight into development of a more effective anticancer therapy combining short-duration ischemia and ionizing radiation modality.

We report a reconstruction method for fast-fission events in 25 MeV/u^(86)Kr +^(208)Pb reactions at the Compact Spectrometer for Heavy Ion Experiment(CSHINE). The fission fragments(FFs) are measured using three large-area parallel-plate avalanche counters, which can deliver the position and arrival timing information of the fragments. The start timing information is provided by the radio frequency of the cyclotron. Fission events were reconstructed using the velocities of the two FFs. The broadening of both the velocity distribution and azimuthal difference of the FFs decreases with the folding angle, in accordance with the picture that fast fission occurs. The anisotropic angular distribution of the fission axis also consistently reveals the dynamic features of fission events.

Reconstructions of the sternum remain a formidable challenge for the operating team. Reconstruction of the sternumdefect, regardless of the reason, should ensure the stability of the anterior chest wall, the return of acceptable respiratory parameters and the control of wounds. Stability of the chest wall can be provided by autogenous tissues or prosthetic materials. In our experience, the fibula free osteocutaneous flaps are harvested for reconstruction of the bone defect in two patients after full-thickness defect of the sternum and anterior chest wall.

Numerical simulations of three-dimensional magnetic swirls in a solar flux-tube

We aim to numerically study evolution of Alfv′en waves that accompany short-lasting swirl events in a solar magnetic flux-tube that can be a simple model of a magnetic pore or a sunspot. With the use of the FLASH code we numerically solve three-dimensional ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations to simulate twists which are implemented at the top of the photosphere in magnetic field lines of the flux-tube. Our numerical results exhibit swirl events and Alfv′en waves with associated clockwise and counterclockwise rotation of magnetic lines, with the largest values of vorticity at the bottom of the chromosphere, and a certain amount of energy flux.

AIM:To characterize small bowel(SB)tumors detected by capsule endoscopy(CE),and identify missed ***:The study included 145 consecutive patients in whom 150 CEs were *** CE,the medical records of the study population were *** of double-or single-balloon enteroscopy performed after CE and the results of surgery in all patients operated on were *** patients were contacted through telephone interviews or postal *** addition,the national cancer registry and the polish clinical gastrointestinal stromal tumor(GIST)Registry were searched to identify missed ***:Indications for CE included overt and occult obscure gastrointestinal bleeding(n=81,53.7%),anemia(n=19,12.7%),malabsorption(n=18,12%),abnormal CB follow through(n=9,6%),abdominal pain(n=7,5%),celiac disease(n=5,3%),neuroendocrine tumor(n=3,2%),Crohn’s disease(n=2,<2%),Peutz-Jeghers syndrome(n=2,<2%),other polyposes(n=2,<2%),and diarrhea(n=2,<2%).The capsule reached the colon in 115(76.6%)*** 150 investigations,CE identified 15SB tumors(10%),14 of which were operated on or treated *** included metastatic melanoma(n=1),adenocarcinoma(n=2),and GIST(n=3).Benign neoplasms included dysplastic Peutz-Jeghers polyps(n=4).Non-neoplastic masses included venous malformation(n=1),inflammatory tumors(n=2),and a mass of unknown histology(n=1).During the follow-up period,three additional SB tumors were found(2 GISTs and one mesenteric tumor of undefined nature).The National Cancer Registry and Polish Clinical GIST Registry revealed no additional SB neoplasms in the post-examination period(follow-up:range 4.2-102.5 mo,median 39 mo).The sensitivity of CE for tumor detection was 83.3%,and the negative predictive value was 97.6%.The specificity and positive predictive value were both 100%.CONCLUSION:Neoplasms may be missed by CE,especially in the proximal *** overt obscure gastrointestinal bleeding,complementary endoscopic and/or rad

2000、2001年4 -7月,我们对波兰东南部纵纹腹小( Athene noctua)繁殖期的食性进行了研究。通过对498个食丸的分析,检出了1 953类动物,其中昆虫占猎物总数量的60·5 % (生物量仅占2·7 %) ,且以鞘翅目(Coleoptera)昆虫居多。该地区纵纹腹小的主要食物是小哺乳动物(占总生物量的93·4 %和总数量的38·3 %) ,在4月出现了一个取食小哺乳动物的高峰。在所捕食的猎物中,个体最大的是欧鼹鼠(Talpa eu-ropaea) ( n=2)。研究还发现,纵纹腹小的猎物种类有季节性变化,以满足繁殖各阶段(如孵卵、育雏和饲喂离巢幼鸟)不同的能量需求。
