Vulnerability of Chinese rural-to-urban migrants to social exclusion:Spatial pattern and mechanism

In response to China’s new“people-oriented urbanization”strategy,investigating the current integration situation of rural-to-urban migrants(RUMs)in cities is essential.However,existing studies have not focused on their subjective willingness and adaptive capacity.Moreover,the mechanism of RUMs’urban integration has not been fully explored.The conceptual framework of vulnerability,which originated from the discipline of natural hazards,is perfectly constructive to address these drawbacks.It consists of three main components,including exposure,sensitivity,and adaptive capacity.Vulnerability index has been constructed and calculated by combining the analytic hierarchy process(AHP)and Delphi method.The spatial pattern of vulnerability level is also analyzed with geographic information system(GIS).Furthermore,the underlying mechanism of vulnerability and its associated factors are investigated with the principle component regression.Three major conclusions are reached.First,the vulnerability level of the RUMs to social exclusion presents a heterogeneous pattern between inland and coastal cities in Shandong Province.Second,while the exposure and sensitivity level of each city correlate spatially with the vulnerability level,RUMs’adaptive capacity further moderates it.Lastly,the level of urban development is revealed to be a key factor influencing vulnerability.This study offers meaningful references to promote inclusive urbanization and sustainable urban development.

An iterative approach to an integrated land use and transportation planning tool for small urban areas

There has been increasing interests in developing land use models for small urban areas for various planning applications such as air quality conformity analysis. The output of a land use model can serve as a major input to a transportation model; conversely, transportation model output can provide a critical input to a land use model. The connection between the two models can be achieved by an accessibility measure. This paper presents an iterative approach to solving a regression-based land use model and a transportation model with combined trip distribution- assignment. A case study using data from a small urban area is presented to illustrate the application of the proposed modeling framework. Tests show that the procedures can converge, and the modeling framework can be a valuable tool for planners and decision-makers in evaluating land use policies and transportation investment strategies.

Reconstructing a Six-Leg Intersection into Mohave county’s First Roundabout

Mohave county,Arizona maintains a six-leg intersection in the Golden Shores area bisected by an uncontrolled regional county highway,county Route 1,where two STOP-controlled section line local roads converge.The two-lane,rural CR 1 serves commuter and visitor traffic traveling between population centers of Lake Havasu City,AZ and Bullhead City,AZ/Laughlin,NV on the Colorado River and its desert lakes.The intersection features 180 total vehicle-to-vehicle conflict points inclusive of 126 crossing conflicts.This paper presents the county’s technical and administrative approach and techniques in planning and developing the CR 1“Six Points”roundabout given the(1)absence of fatal and incapacitating injury crash history and(2)backdrop of this improvement representing the county’s first roundabout.Project initiation entailed the county securing a Federal share of Highway Safety Improvement Program funding at 100-percent.Project design commenced with a preliminary engineering study to identify,evaluate,and solicit public input on alternative improvement solutions as part of validating the roundabout improvement as superior for traffic operations,community and business function,sitting,and constructability.public input targeted preference for maintaining CR 1 uninterrupted flow versus interrupted flow introduced under roundabout circulation.This simple decision tree enabled the county to understand existing operational and access conditions important to the public,business owners,and public safety providers for purpose of configuring a roundabout improvement satisfying local motorist and community needs,which stoked stakeholder buy-in on the project.

Long-range precipitation forecasts using paleoclimate reconstructions in the western United States

Long-range precipitation forecasts are useful when managing water supplies.Oceanicatmospheric oscillations have been shown to influence precipitation.Due to a longer cycle of some of the oscillations,a short instrumental record is a limitation in using them for long-range precipitation forecasts.The influence of oscillations over precipitation is observable within paleoclimate reconstructions;however,there have been no attempts to utilize these reconstructions in precipitation forecasting.A data-driven model,KStar,is used for obtaining long-range precipitation forecasts by extending the period of record through the use of reconstructions of oscillations.KStar is a nearest neighbor algorithm with an entropy-based distance function.Oceanic-atmospheric oscillation reconstructions include the El Nino-Southern Oscillation(ENSO),the Pacific Decadal Oscillation(PDO),the North Atlantic Oscillation(NAO),and the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation(AMO).Precipitation is forecasted for 20 climate divisions in the western United States.A 10-year moving average is applied to aid in the identification of oscillation phases.A lead time approach is used to simulate a one-year forecast,with a 10-fold cross-validation technique to test the models.Reconstructions are used from 1658-1899,while the observed record is used from 1900-2007.The model is evaluated using mean absolute error(MAE),root mean squared error(RMSE),RMSE-observations standard deviation ratio(RSR),Pearson's correlation coefficient(R),NashSutcliffe coefficient of efficiency(NSE),and linear error in probability space(LEPS) skill score(SK).The role of individual and coupled oscillations is evaluated by dropping oscillations in the model.The results indicate 'good' precipitation estimates using the KStar model.This modeling technique is expected to be useful for long-term water resources planning and management.

Evaluation of Doppler Radar Data for Assessing Depth-Area Reduction Factors for the Arid Region of San Bernardino county

The Doppler Radar derived rainfall data for over 150 candidate storms during 1997-2015 period, for the county of San Bernardino, California, was assessed. Eleven most significant storms were identified for detailed analysis. For these significant storms, Depth-Area Reduction Factors (“DARF”) curves were developed and compared with the published curves developed and adapted by several flood control agencies for this study area. More rainfall data need to be pursued and analyzed before any correlation hypothesis is proposed.

public Spaces and Social Hierarchy in the Tibetan Village——Survey based on Tsapanang Village in Chushui county

With the development of productive forces, primitive cave dwelling and cave dwelling-style settlement has gradually developed, through the ancient village and the modem village, into the contemporary village, which incorporates modem planning ideas, has a fairly rich range of facilities and is relatively stable in form. Development of the village accompanies the survival and development of mankind.

Objective:This survey was designed to understand the misconceptions about labor epidurals.Methods:This voluntary and anonymous online survey on *** was conducted from September 1st,2015 to January 1st,2016 via mainly WeChat groups dedicated to perinatal healthcare providers in China.The questionnaire included items inquiring the knowledge and opinions about labor epidural analgesia related to maternal complications,baby safety,and effect on laboring.Incomplete surveys were excluded from the data analysis.The data was presented as percentages and a Chi-square test or Fisher's exact test,as appreciate,was used to quantitatively compare the results.Results:A total of 1412 respondents completed surveys with 42.9%(606/1412)of them being anesthesiologists,35.1%(495/1412)being obstetricians,11.8%(167/1412)being midwives,3.7%(52/1412)being labor and delivery nurses,and 6.5%(92/1412)being hospital administrators and unspecified.The study revealed a lack of knowledge in labor pain control.Although 82.4%(1164/1412)of respondents were familiar with labor epidural analgesia,8.9%(126/1412)did not know how it works,and 1.1%(15/1412)never heard it in a multiple-choice question.The three main groups(anesthesiologists,obstetricians,and midwives/labor and delivery nurses)were chosen for comparisons.Opinions among these three groups concerning five questions in the three main concerns were evaluated using a statistical significance of Ppublic awareness fueled by misconceptions related to labor epidural analgesia may be associated with a lack of professional knowledge.Correct knowledge in professionals needs to be disseminated to the public in order to dispel possible misconceptions and rumors about labor epidural analgesia.This would not only enhance patient understand

Systems Thinking and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene: Examples from Kenya’s <i>Afya Jijini</i>Program

The Afya Jijini program targeted improved access to and quality of health services in Nairobi City county through the strengthening of local health systems. The program took a systems thinking approach recognizing that strong, coordinated commitments and contributions from various levels of multiple sectors such as health, public works, and education would be essential to the program’s success. Consistent with the World Health Organization’s proclamation that the provision of safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) are prerequisites for all public health endeavors, WASH-related efforts were woven into nearly all facets of the Afya Jijini program. IRC is a nonprofit located in the Netherlands focused on systems thinking approaches for sustainable WASH improvements. IRC’s 9 building blocks are tools to assist in breaking down the complexities of systems, identifying key actors and factors that contribute to sustainable improvements, and setting clear program indicators and targets for success. This conceptual manuscript seeks to explore the Afya Jijini program through the lens of the IRC’s building block approach to systems thinking. Examples of Afya Jijini programming aligned with each building block are presented to assist program planners and guide future interventions. Afya Jijini could have benefited from increased attention to several key building blocks, including institutions, finance, and learning and adaptation.
