Lipid concentration and composition in xylem sap of woody angiosperms from a tropical savanna and a seasonal rainforest

Lipids may play an important role in preventing gas embolisms by coating nanobubbles in xylem *** studies on xylem sap lipids have been reported for temperate plants,and it remain unclear whether sap lipids have adaptational significance in tropical *** this study,we quantify the lipid composition of xylem sap for angiosperm species from a tropical savanna(seven species)and a seasonal rainforest(five species)using mass *** found that all twelve species studied contained lipids in their xylem sap,including galactolipids,phospholipids and triacylglycerol,with a total lipid concentration ranging from 0.09 to 0.26 nmol/*** was no difference in lipid concentration or composition between plants from the two sites,and the lipid concentration was negatively related to species’open vessel ***,savanna species showed little variation in lipid composition between the dry and the rainy *** results support the hypothesis that xylem sap lipids are derived from the cytoplasm of individual conduit cells,remain trapped inside individual conduits,and undergo few changes in composition over consecutive seasons.A xylem sap lipidomic data set,which includes 12 tropical tree species from this study and 11 temperate tree species from literature,revealed no phylogenetic signals in lipid composition for these *** study fills a knowledge gap in the lipid content of xylem sap in tropical trees and provides additional support for their common distribution in xylem sap of woody *** appears that xylem sap lipids have no adaptive significance.

Structural variations(SVs)are a feature of plant genomes that has been largely unexplored despite their significant impact on plant phenotypic traits and local adaptation to abiotic and biotic *** this study,we employed woolly grape(Vitis retordii),a species native to the tropical and subtropical regions of East Asia with both coastal and inland habitats,as a valuable model for examining the impact of SVs on local *** assembled a haplotype-resolved chromosomal reference genome for woolly grape,and conducted population genetic analyses based on whole-genome sequencing(WGS)data from coastal and inland *** demographic analyses revealed recent bottlenecks in all populations and asymmetric gene flow from the inland to the coastal *** total,1,035 genes associated with plant adaptive regulation for salt stress,radiation,and environmental adaptation were detected underlying local selection by SVs and SNPs in the coastal population,of which 37.29% and 65.26% were detected by SVs and SNPs,*** genes such as FSD2,RGA1,and AAP8 associated with salt tolerance were found to be highly differentiated and selected during the process of local adaptation to coastal habitats in SV *** study highlights the importance of SVs in local adaptation;candidate genes related to salt stress and climatic adaptation to tropical and subtropical environments are important genomic resources for future breeding programs of grapevine and its rootstocks.

Aboveground biomass stocks of species-rich natural forests in southern China are influenced by stand structural attributes,species richness and precipitation

Forests,the largest terrestrial carbon sinks,play an important role in carbon sequestration and climate change *** forest attributes and environmental factors have been shown to impact aboveground biomass,their influence on biomass stocks in species-rich forests in southern China,a biodiversity hotspot,has rarely been *** this study,we characterized the effects of environmental factors,forest structure,and species diversity on aboveground biomass stocks of 30 plots(1 ha each) in natural forests located within seven nature reserves distributed across subtropical and marginal tropical zones in Guangxi,*** results indicate that forest aboveground biomass stocks in this region are lower than those in mature tropical and subtropical forests in other ***,we found that aboveground biomass was positively correlated with stand age,mean annual precipitation,elevation,structural attributes and species richness,although not with species *** we compared stands with the same basal area,we found that aboveground biomass stock was higher in communities with a higher coefficient of variation of diameter at breast *** findings highlight the importance of maintaining forest structural diversity and species richness to promote aboveground biomass accumulation and reveal the potential impacts of precipitation changes resulting from climate warming on the ecosystem services of subtropical and northern tropical forests in ***,many natural forests in southern China are not fully ***,their continued growth will increase their carbon storage over time.

Analysis of Occurrence and Mixed Infection of Sugarcane Bacilliform Virus Disease in Hainan Sugarcane-growing Area

[Objectives]The paper was to explore the occurrence and mixed infection of sugarcane bacilliform virus disease in Hainan sugarcane-growing area.[Methods]A total of 348 sugarcane leaf samples were collected from 7 sugarcane-growing areas in Hainan *** detection of sugarcane bacilliform virus(SCBV)was carried out by PCR using specific primers.[Results]SCBV was detected in 244 out of 348 sugarcane samples,with an average detection rate of 70.11%.The highest detection rate was 76.66%in the Danzhou sugarcane-growing area,while the lowest was 57.14%in the Baisha sugarcane-growing *** SCBV-positive samples were subjected to testing for SCYLV,SCSMV,SrMV,and SCMV,*** results indicated that 106 out of 244 positive samples exhibited a single infection with SCBV,while 138 samples exhibited mixed infections with SCBV and other sugarcane *** proportion of mixed infections among the SCBV-positive samples was as high as 56.56%.Among the various types of mixed infections,two-virus and three-virus mixed infections were the most prevalent.[Conclusions]SCBV has emerged as a significant threat to the secure production of sugarcane in the Hainan sugarcane-growing *** presents an explosive infection in the Hainan sugarcane-growing region and frequently combines with other sugarcane viruses to infect *** findings of this study will provide a theoretical foundation for the prevention and control of sugarcane bacilliform virus disease.

Transcriptomic analysis reveals the defense mechanisms of citrus infested with Diaphorina citri

Huanglongbing(HLB) is a devastating disease that has led to an acute crisis for growers of citrus, one of the world's most important fruit crops. The phloem-feeding Asian citrus psyllid(ACP), Diaphorina citri, is the main pest at the new shoot stage and is the only natural vector of HLB pathogenic bacteria. Little is known about how plants perceive and defend themselves from this destructive pest. Here, we characterized changes in the expression of various genes in citrus plants that were continuously infested by D. citri for different durations(12, 24, and 48 h). A total of 5 219 differentially expressed genes(DEGs) and 643 common DEGs were identified across all time points. Several pathways related to defense were activated, such as peroxisome, alpha-linolenic acid metabolism, and phenylpropanoid and terpenoid biosynthesis, and some pathways related to growth and signal transduction were suppressed in response to D. citri infestation. The expression of genes including kinases(CML44, CIPK6, and XTH6), phytohormones(SAMT, LOX6, and NPR3), transcription factors(bHLH162, WRKY70, and WRKY40), and secondary metabolite synthesis-related genes(PAL, 4CL2, UGT74B1 and CYP82G1) was significantly altered in response to D. citri infestation. The findings of this study greatly enhance our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the defense response of citrus plants to D. citri infestation at the molecular level. Functional characterization of the candidate defense-related genes identified in this study will aid the molecular breeding of insect-resistant citrus varieties.

Convergent relationships between flower economics and hydraulic traits across aquatic and terrestrial herbaceous plants

Maintaining open flowers is critical for successful pollination and depends on long-term water and carbon *** the relationship between how flower hydraulic traits are coordinated in different habitats is poorly ***,we hypothesize that the coordination and trade-offs between floral hydraulics and economics traits are independent of environmental *** test this hypothesis,we investigated a total of 27 flower economics and hydraulic traits in six aquatic and six terrestrial herbaceous species grown in a tropical botanical *** found that although there were a few significant differences,most flower hydraulics and economics traits did not differ significantly between aquatic and terrestrial herbaceous *** flower mass per area and floral longevity were significantly positively correlated with the time required for drying full-hydrated flowers to 70%relative water *** dry matter content was strongly and positively related to drought tolerance of the flowers as indicated by flower water potential at the turgor loss *** addition,there was a trade-off between hydraulic efficiency and the construction cost of a flower across *** results show that flowers of aquatic and terrestrial plants follow the same economics spectrum *** results suggest a convergent flower economics design across terrestrial and aquatic plants,providing new insights into the mechanisms by which floral organs adapt to aquatic and terrestrial habitats.

Sequence and Bioinformatics Analysis on MSTN Gene of the Hybrid Grouper Derived from(Epinephelus fuscoguttatus×Epinephelus polyphekadion)

[Objectives]This study aimed to investigate the sequence structure and function of Myostatin(MSTN)gene in the hybrid grouper(Epinephelus fuscoguttatus,♀×Epinephelus polyphekadion,♂).[Methods]Genetic DNA samples were extracted from the caudal fins of the hybrid grouper and its parents to amplify their MSTN ***,MSTN gene sequences were analyzed using bioinformatics tools to predict their protein structures and functions.[Results]The hybrid grouper and its parents shared the same MSTN gene structure,consisting of three exons and two *** sequence of the gene could be translated into 376 amino acids,including an N-terminal signal peptide,a proteolytic processing site(RXXR motif),and nine conserved cysteine residues at C-terminal,which were the typical features of transforming growth factor beta(TGF-β)superfamily *** of protein sequence showed that MSTN was highly conserved between the hybrid grouper and its ***,exon 3,an important functional domain,exhibited a sequence similarity of 100%among *** addition,four variable amino acid residues were detected in exon 2 at positions 141,153,185 and 186 in the hybrid grouper,but they did not affect the secondary structure of the protein.[Conclusion]These results will provide molecular information for future investigation on the growth and heterosis of hybrid grouper species,and on the roles of MSTN gene in regulating the growth traits of the hybrid grouper.

Kongsfjorden is known for its characteristic multi-layer water mass formed by the convergence of freshwaters from nearby glaciers and rivers and saline water from the Atlantic and *** distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)in the water column of Kongsfjorden was investigated and their potential sources were *** total concentrations of 16 PAHs in the surface seawater and river water were in the range of 33.4-79.8 ng/L(mean 48.5 ng/L)and 2.3-201.4 ng/L(mean 126.1 ng/L),***,PAHs were mainly concentrated around river estuaries and the glacier front in the dissolved ***,the PAHs in the particulate phase followed surface-enrichment and depth-depletion patterns in most stations,with the maximum concentration found at 50 m depth in the central area of *** compositions of PAHs in seawater and rivers were similar,with two-ring and tricyclic PAHs comprising the majority of the dissolved and particulate *** found in Kongsfjorden waters appeared to be derived from multiple sources such as petroleum and coal *** in the bay mouth of Kongsfjorden were mainly introduced by the West Spitsbergen Current and the Arctic waters,while in the inner bay,atmospheric deposition and local sources were the major *** distribution of PAHs was mainly attributed to the suspended particulate distribution.

Since the official release of the stand-alone bioinformatics toolkit TBtools in 2020,its superior functionality in data analysis has been demonstrated by its widespread adoption by many thousands of users and references in more than 5000 academic ***,TBtools is a commonly used tool in biological *** the past 3 years,thanks to invaluable feedback and suggestions from numerous users,we have optimized and expanded the functionality of the toolkit,leading to the development of an upgraded version—*** this upgrade,we have incorporated over 100 new features,such as those for comparative genomics analysis,phylogenetic analysis,and data ***,to better meet the increasing needs of personalized data analysis,we have launched the plugin mode,which enables users to develop their own plugins and manage their selection,installation,and removal according to individual *** date,the plugin store has amassed over 50 plugins,with more than half of them being independently developed and contributed by TBtools *** plugins offer a range of data analysis options including co-expression network analysis,single-cell data analysis,and bulked segregant analysis sequencing data ***,TBtools is now transforming from a stand-alone software to a comprehensive bioinformatics platform of a vibrant and cooperative community in which users are also developers and *** promoting the theme“one for all,all for one”,we believe that TBtools-II will greatly benefit more biological researchers in this big-data era.
