Sensing Behaviour of Some Nanocomposite Systems

Silver nanoparticles of diameters 3.4 to 13.2 nm grown at the interfaces between silicate glass and some oxide crystallites exhibited about six orders of magnitude reduction in resistivity for a relative humidity change from 25% to 80%. Sn-SnO2 nano core-shell structure prepared within a gel-derived silica glass film by electrodeposition technique followed by heat treatment showed large change in resistivity as a function of humidity. The resistivity also changed due to gas flow of CO2, C2H5OH and NO2, respectively. The latter arose because of reduction/oxidation of Sn4+/Sn2+ species present at the shell layer of the nanostructures. Nickel nanosheets of thickness ~0.6 nm grown within the interlayer spaces of Na-4 mica crystallites showed a change of dielectric permittivity (5%) for an applied magnetic field of 1.2 Tesla. An inhomogeneous model was used to explain this behavior. Two dimensional CuO phase was grown within the channels of diameter ~5 nm of mesoporous SiO2 structure. A magnetodielectric (MD) parameter M.D. of 4.4% was obtained in this case. BaTiO3 nanoparticles of diameter ~25 nm having pores with diameter 10 nm showed multiferroic behavior which arose due to the presence of oxygen vacancies as a result of large surface area present. An M.D. parameter of 11% was found. Similarly mesoporous LiNbO3 of 10 nm diameter showed an M.D. parameter of ~4.5% at a magnetic field 1 Tesla. A giant magnetocapacitance effect with a value of 44% at 1.5 T was observed in nickel zinc ferrite (NZF) impregnated mesoporous silica. A magnetocapacitance of 51% at magnetic field 1.7 T was found in the case of nanocomposites comprising of iron ion containing silica based nanoglass and mesoporous silica. In the last two examples the behavior was explained on the basis of Catalan model of space-charge polarization with extracted values of magnetoresistance of the NZF and nanoglass phases being 58%.

The present study deals with Bianchi type-IX string cosmological models for perfect fluid distribution. We consider two cases：（i） ρ ＋ λ = 0, （ii） ρ - λ = 0, where ρ and λ are the rest energy density and the tension density of a string cloud, respectively. The physical and geometrical properties of the models are discussed.

We investigate the Bianchi type-V magnetized string cosmological model with variable magnetic permeability for viscous fluid distribution. The magnetic field is due to an electric current produced along the x-axis. Thus the magnetic field is in yz-plane and F23 is the only non-vanishing component of electromagnetic field tensor Fij. To obtain the deterministic model in terms of cosmic time t, we assume the condition ξθ const where ξ is the coefficient of bulk viscosity and θ the expansion in the model.

Molecular Footprint of Kenya’s Gene Bank Repositories Based on the <i>cp</i>-Genome Signatures

While the mutational processes that subsume biological diversity can be revealed in great detail through phylogenetic inferencing using plastid markers, few studies document their use. Accurate phylogenic inference can provide a framework for addressing a host of important evolutionary questions including a context to reconstruct molecular evolution of an organism. Despite the obvious utility of plastid markers in illuminating biological enquiry, many important questions still abound. The use of cp-DNA gene sequence data for phylogenetic inference can have an enormous impact on plant phylogenetics and systematics. The repertoire of genetic diversity of Kenya’s Gene Bank repositories can be explored based on cp-genome signatures. This is because cp-DNA-based mutational changes are an important additional tool to the previous evidence available on plant evolution yet to be explored in biodiversity studies in Kenya. Taken together, these evolutionary changes can inspire development of realistic algorithms for phylogenetic inferencing based on molecular data. Phylogenetic reconstructions are at the very core of molecular evolution. Comparative sequence analyses of plastid markers can have utility beyond the study of phylogeny. The pattern of nucleotide substitution observed over evolutionary time can reflect functional constraints imposed due to natural selection. In line with this, it is possible to detect subtle anatomical variations associated with small fitness effects that can account for genetic diversity at varietal level. The lack of sequence information in Kenyan cowpea has limited the robust advancement of molecular markers use in dissecting diversity based on the putative plastid markers?[1]. Substituted 2-benzylidene-1-benzofuran-3-ones are commonly known as aurones. This class of bioactive heterocycles belongs to flavonoid family. The article intends to put forth the rational design and synthesis of a new series of aurones using 3’,5’-dibromo-2’,4’-dihydroxychalcones and copper bromide in presence of DMF-water mixture (8:2, v/v) for the first time. Preliminary bioassay shows that most of compounds have good trypanocidal activity against Trypanosoma cruzi at 10 μg/mL. Few compounds are equally potent to the standard drugs Benznidazole and Nifurtimox. The structures of the newly synthesized products 2a-n were established by elemental analysis, FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectroscopic studies.

A Ten-Year Review of Primary Postpartum Haemrrhage at a University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, Nigeria: A Case-Control Study

Objective: To determine the incidence of primary postpartum haemorrhage, identify risk/aetiological factors contributing to primary postpartum haemorrhage and review the different therapeutic approaches in the management of primary postpartum haemorrhage. Method: A retrospective case-control study of all patients with primary postpartum haemorrhage from January 1, 2001 to December 31, 2010 at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, Nigeria. Result: In the period under review, 272 cases of primary postpartum haemorrhage were documented while there were a total of 5929 deliveries, giving an incidence of 1 in 26 (25.6%). The average blood loss in the cases reviewed was 1550 mls whilst in the controls, the average blood loss was 200 mls. There was statistical significant difference between the grandmultiparous cases and grandmultiparous controls (58.4% versus 16.5%, OR = 6.74, p < 0.05), suggesting that grandmultiparity may be an implicated factor in primary postpartum haemorrhage. In the unbooked cases, retained placenta was the major cause of primary postpartum haemorrhage constituting 109 (51.7%), whereas in booked cases, uterine atony contributed 70.5% to primary postpartum haemorrhage. Four maternal deaths were recorded giving a case fatality rate of 1.5%;all were unbooked. Conclusion: Postpartum haemorrhage ranks high in the list of causes of maternal death and the case fatality rate can be very high. Prevention is the key to reducing the incidence of PPH and its sequale, with preventive measures based upon the identification of risk factors, surveillance of women at risk and seemingly not at risk and avoidance of procedure during delivery which could potentially result in complications.

Open Prostatectomy in the Management of Benign Prostate Hyperplasia in a Developing Economy

Background: Open prostatectomy (OP) is still relatively common in developing countries and remains a useful benchmark against which the minimal access surgical techniques are compared. This study aims to document the indications and outcomes of OP in a typical developing economy. Method: The records of patients with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) who had OP in our university teaching hospital between July 2004 and June 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. Some analyzed parameters include the demographic characteristics, indications, pre-operative work-up, anaesthetic techniques, OP type, complications, histopathology results and follow-up duration. Results: A total of 247 cases were studied. Mean age was 67 years while the commonest surgery indication was recurrent acute urinary retention. Average prostate specific antigen (PSA) was 8.4 ng/ml while hypertension was the most common comorbidity (44.1%). Regional anaesthesia was mainly used (79.4%) while retropubic prostatectomy was the commonest OP type done (58.7%). The enucleated specimen weighed above 60 g in 91.9% of cases. All our patients were able to micturate spontaneously with urine stream above 20 mls/second on follow-up one week after discharge. Mean duration of hospital admission and follow-up were 7 days and 9 months respectively. Complications occurred in 90 patients (36.4%), of which surgical site infections were the commonest (9.8%). There was 0.4% mortality. Histopathology results showed BPH (95.5%), (incidental) prostate adenocarcinoma (2.4%) or prostatic intra-epithelial neoplasia (2.1%). Conclusion: OP remains an important therapeutic option for management of BPH in developing countries partly due to relatively large prostate size and presence of BPH complications from late presentationin many patients. The surgery is efficient and has relatively low morbidity and minimal mortality.

BACKGROUND Mediastinal leakage(ML) is one of the most feared complications of esophagectomy. A standard strategy for its diagnosis and treatment has beendifficult to establish because of the great variability in their incidence and mortality rates reported in the existing *** To assess the incidence, predictive factors, treatment, and associated mortality rate of mediastinal leakage using the standardized definition of mediastinal leaks recently proposed by the Esophagectomy Complications Consensus Group(ECCG).METHODS Seven Italian surgical centers(five high-volume, two low-volume) affiliated with the Italian Society for the Study of Esophageal Diseases designed and implemented a retrospective study including all esophagectomies(n = 501) with intrathoracic esophagogastric anastomosis performed from 2014 to *** mls were defined according to the classification recently proposed by the *** Fifty-nine cases of ML were recorded, yielding an overall incidence of 11.8%(95%CI: 9.1%-14.9%). The surgical approach significantly influenced the occurrence of ML: the proportion of leakage was 10.5% and 9% after open and hybrid esophagectomy(HE), respectively, and doubled(20%) after totally minimally invasive esophagectomy(TMIE)(P = 0.016). No other predictive factors were found. The 30-and 90-d overall mortality rates were 1.4% and 3.2%,respectively; the 30-and 90-d leak-related mortality rates were 5.1% and 10.2%,respectively; the 90-d mortality rates for TMIE and HE were 5.9% and 1.8%,respectively. Endoscopy was the first-line treatment in 49% of ML cases, with the need for retreatment in 17.2% of cases. Surgery was needed in 44.1% of ML *** treatment had the lowest mortality rate(6.9%). Epidemiological Patterns of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders among Healthcare Workers in Five Reference Hospitals in the City of Douala, Cameroon

Introduction: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) are a public health problem and have forced many workers to quit their jobs prematurely. This study investigated the prevalence and risk factors of WRMSDs among Healthcare workers in five reference hospitals in the City of Douala-Cameroon. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2022 among 561 healthcare workers working in five reference hospitals in the city of Douala, Cameroon. Participants were selected using a convenient sampling technique. Data were collected with structured questionnaires;data on the demographics and risk factors were collected using a well-designed questionnaire, while estimation of the prevalence of WRMSDs was done using the Modified Nordic questionnaire. Results: The overall prevalence rate of WRMSDs among healthcare workers in Douala hospitals was 83.4% (468/561). The prevalence per prof.ssional groups was as follows: 88.8% (71) for Medical Laboratory Scientists (mls), 81.9% (289) for nurses, 21 (80.8%) for Physiotherapists (PTs) and 78.8% (41) for Medical Doctors (MDs). There was a significant difference (p = 0.001) in the prevalence of WRMSDs with respect to place of work where healthcare workers from HLD recorded the highest prevalence 89.9%, while Healthcare workers from NBDH were 2.91 times at risk (AOR = 2.91;95% CI: 1.32 - 6.41;p = 0.001) to develop WRMSDs than healthcare workers in the other hospitals. With respect to body region, the highest prevalence of WRMSDs was recorded on the lower back, 58.8% with the lowest at the elbows 11.2%. The age group 30 to 39 years was significantly associated with WRMSDs at level of the shoulder (p = 0.002), upper back (p = 0.019), elbows (p Conclusion: The overall prevalence rate of WRMSDs among healthcare workers in Douala hospitals was high.
