Following a short struggle against an aggressive cancer, Prof. Jure Piskur （Fig. 1 ）, a professor of molecular genetics at lund University （LU）, Sweden, and the University of Nova Gorica （UNG）, Slovenia, died in his home in lund on 18 May 2014. He leaves behind his lifelong partner and wife, Judita Gartner, and their sons, Jan and Jure.

The complex interaction between material properties in an induction heating circuit was studied by multi physics simulation and by experimental verification in a full-scale laboratory heater. The work aims to illustrate the complexity of the system of interacting materials, but also to propose a method to verify properties of soft magnetic composite materials in an integrated system and to identify which properties are the most critical under different circumstances and load cases. Heat losses at different loads were primarily studied, from DC currents to AC currents at 15, 20 and 25 kHz, respectively. A FE model for magnetic simulation was correlated with a corresponding model for heat simulation. The numerical model, as well as the established input material data, could be verified through the experimental measurements. In this particular study, the current loss in the litz wire was the dominant heat source, thus making the thermal conductivity of the SMC the most important property in this material.

Travelling wave induction heating (TWIH) suffers from severe interference between the coils, which significantly reduces its efficiency. A strategy for decoupling the currents in TWIH is presented, based on the anti-series or anti-parallel connection of several inductors. The study investigates the coupling effect in terms of amplitude and phase shift as functions of current and frequency, respectively, including resonance behavior. In addition, the effects of deviations of the inductor properties are analyzed. Measurements indicate that the strategy produces very good results, almost eliminating the coupling effect, increasing the efficiency, and simplifying control. Simulated and measured results of the heating pattern are compared and efficiency values and power densities are presented.

Surface roughness is a commonly used criterion for characterization of surface quality in a machining operation. In the study of micro-scale mechanical properties of machined surface and cutting tool using nanoindentation method, perfect surface finish on the specimen is often required for the reliable indentation result. However, the perfect surface finish is often difficult to obtain from the machining operation due to the dynamic behavior of the machining and the limitation of the cutting tool geometry. In the presented paper, the effect of surface roughness on the nanoindentation measurements is investigated by using finite element method. A 3D finite element model with seven levels of surface roughness is developed to simulate the load-displacement behavior in an indentation process with a Berkovich indenter. The material used in the simulation is AISI 316 L stainless steel, modeled as an elastic-plastic material. The mechanical properties were calculated by combining simulations with the Oliver-Pharr method. The hardness and reduced modulus from the simulation were found to decrease with an increase of roughness. The study showed that the scatter of the load-depth curves and the deviation of the hardness and the reduced modulus are significant affected by the variation of roughness. It was also found that the height of pile-up was little affected by the surface roughness from the simulation. The combined effect of indenter tip radius and surface roughness was also investigated. The study was complemented with experimental tests and the results from these tests support the results from the simulation.

Aerosol technology provides efficient methods for producing nanoparticles with well-controlled composition and size distribution. This review provides an overview of methods and results obtained by using aerosol technology for producing nanostruetures for a variety of applications in semiconductor physics and device technology. Examples are given from： production of metal and metal alloy particles： semiconductor nanoparticles; semiconductor nanowires, grown both in the aerosol phase and on substrates; physics studies based on individual aerosol-generated devices; and large area deviees based on aerosol particles.

Water and energy are inextricably linked, and as a consequence both have to be addressed together. This is called the water-energy nexus. When access to either is limited, it becomes obvious that it is necessary to consider their interdependence. Population growth, climate change, urbanization, increasing living standards and food con- sumption will require an integrated approach where food, water and energy security are considered together. In this paper we examine water, energy and food security and their couplings. The nexus also creates conflicts between water use, energy extraction and generation as well as food production. Some of these conflicts are illustrated. It is argued that there is an urgent need for integrated planning and operation. Not only will better technology be needed, but also better integration of policies, organizations and political decisions.

The development of methods to produce nanoparticles with unique properties via the aerosol route is progressing rapidly. Typical characterization techniques extract particles from the synthesis process for subsequent offiine analysis, which may alter the particle characteristics. In this work, we use laser-vaporization aerosol mass spectrometry （LV-AMS） with 70-eV electron ionization for real-time, in-situ nanoparticle characterization. The particle characteristics are examined for various aerosol synthesis methods, degrees of sintering, and for controlled condensation of organic material to simulate surface coating/functionalization. The LV-AMS is used to characterize several types of metal nanoparticles （Ag, Au, Pd, PdAg, Fe, Ni, and Cu）. The degree of oxidation of the Fe and Ni nanoparticles is found to increase with increased sintering temperature, while the surface organic-impurity content of the metal particles decreases with increased sintering temperature. For aggregate metal particles, the organic-impurity content is found to be similar to that of a monolayer. By comparing different equivalent-diameter measurements, we demonstrate that the LV-AMS can be used in tandem with a differential mobility analyzer to determine the compactness of synthesized metal particles, both during sintering and during material addition for surface functionalization. Further, materials supplied to the particle production line downstream of the particle generators are found to reach the generators as contaminants. The capacity for such in-situ observations is important, as it facilitates rapid response to undesired behavior within the particle production process. Determining short chain fatty acids in sewage sludge hydrolysate: A comparison of three analytical methods and investigation of sample storage effects

In anaerobic digestion, the production of short-chain fatty acids （SCFAs） can be beneficial or harmful to the overall process, depending on the concentration of accumulated acids. Therefore, the accurate determination of the SCFA concentration in both fresh and stored sludge hydrolysates is important. To select a suitable method for monitoring SCFAs during the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge, the accuracy of three available analytical methods, including 5 pH point acid titration （TITRA5）, gas chromatography （GC）, and spectrophotometry, were compared in the present study. The results revealed that TITRA5 and GC displayed better agreement in the achieved measurements and higher precision and accuracy than the spectrophotometric assay, as supported by the application of different statistical models. TITRA5 excelled in titrating unfiltered hydrolysate while simultaneously measuring the alkalinity, whereas the GC method provided detailed information on the contribution of different fatty acids to the total acidity. In contrast, the spectrophotometric assay suffered from many forms of interference, depending on the sample＇s matrix. SCFA production followed the pattern of enzymatic reactions and fitted the Michaelis-Menten model. In addition to promoting TITRA5 as an accurate and robust analytical tool for routine SCFA analyses, this comparative study also demonstrated the possibility of storing hydrolysate samples at different temperatures and durations without altering the SCFA measurements.
