Failure analysis of a kind of low power connector

A kind of low power connector used e.g. in household appliances was partly burned in routine experiment. The heat sources were four paralleled co.tacts co.structed by springs (Sn/CuSn-alloy) in socket and a plug sheet (Ni/Steel) while mating. The co.tact interfaces were detected by scanning electronic microsco.e (SEM) and X-ray energy dispersive spectros- co.y (XEDS), obvious wear tracks and various co.taminants, including element Si, Al, Na, K, S, Cl, O, etc., were found. The co.tamination degrees on the four paralleled co.tacts were different, so that the ratio of average co.tact resistance on the four co.tacts was about 5:8:3:1. The maximum co.tact resistance on co.tacts of the plug sheet reached 28 ?. The main failure rea- sons were fretting and co.tamination between the co.tact interfaces. Fretting simulation showed that connection resistance of connectors was raised up, even to ohms level. When the current increased to 5 A, the socket housing was heated and deco.- posed. By the thermal analysis, it was estimated that the connector would be burned under the lower current if the current was not evenly distributed on the four paralleled co.tacts caused by uneven co.tamination. Improvement methods for connector failure are also discussed.

Industrial co.munication with Ethernet and Fieldbuses

With its open protoco. structures, its strengths in universal co.munication and its free choice of topology, Ethernet has long since established itself as the standard in office co.munication. In the field of industrial co.munications, on the other hand, various Fieldbuses have emerged to date as the defacto standard. This is largely due to geographical reasons or specific application requirements. In co.ntless machines and systems worldwide, they serve to connect sensors and actuators with co.trol technology. Ethernet is already used in the industry for co.municating between various machines and subsystems. It is therefore natural and obvious that the industry should also be interested in using the global co.munication standard Ethernet for connecting sensors and actuators. However, this is not possible without modifying or adding to the standard Ethernet technology. The reasons for this include the co.plexity of the protoco., the processing power required in each simple device and the increased project *** a result, various co.panies and organizations are working on Ethernet extensions, especially those that will enable real-time processing.
