Differential temperature responses between Plutella xylostella and its specialist endo-larval parasitoid Diadegma semiclausum—Implications for biological control

Understanding the thermal dynamics of host-parasitoid interactions is crucial to predicting how biological control of pest insects by parasitoids might be affected by geographic location and climate *** compared performance traits of Plutella xylostella(Lepidoptera:Plutellidae)and its solitary endo-larval parasitoid Diadegma semiclausum(Hymenoptera:Ichneumonidae),over a wide range of constant rearing temperatures(10-30℃).Parasitoids reared at 30℃ experienced reductions in pupation rate,pupal mass,egg load,and adult life span when compared with those reared at lower *** analyses of the fate of parasitoids and their hosts and intergenerational population growth at different rearing temperatures show that *** and *** respond differently to temperature,leading to divergent outcomes under different temperature *** parasitoid larvae could not complete development at 30℃,the temperature at which the host biomass was least and the metabolic demands of the parasitoid could be high,suggesting that parasitoid development might be constrained by lack of host resources at higher *** discuss the potential mechanisms of parasitoid susceptibility to elevated temperatures,which likely explain the pronounced seasonal dynamics of *** in subtropical regions and its failure to establish in lowland tropical regions,where *** is a serious *** interactions in other host-parasitoid associations would constrain the efficacy of parasitoids as biological control agents as global temperatures increase.

Structure and quality controlled growth of InAs nanowires through catalyst engineering

In this study, the structure and quality controlled growth of InAs nanowires using Au catalysts in a molecular beam epitaxy reactor is presented. By tuning the indium concentration in the catalyst, defect-free wurtzite structure and defect-free zinc blende structure InAs nanowires can be induced. It is found that these defect-free zinc blende structure InAs nanowires grow along 〈110〉 directions with four low-energy {111} and two {110} side-wall facets and adopt the （111） catalyst/nanowire interface. Our structural and chemical characterization and calculations identify the existence of a catalyst supersaturation threshold for the InAs nanowire growth. When the In concentration in the catalyst is sufficiently high, defect-free zinc blende structure InAs nanowires can be induced. This study provides an insight into the manipulation of crystal structure and structure quality of III-V semiconductor nanowires through catalyst engineering.

To satisfy the property requirements for biodegradable medical implants,Zn alloyed with low levels of Mg(≤0.8 wt%)has attracted increased research *** the present study,deformation twinning was observed in tensile tests and twinning appears to have an adverse impact on *** profuse twinning in the as-cast Zn-Mg alloys accelerated crack growth in tension due to twinning impingement which caused local stress concentrations and initiates ***-rolled Zn-Mg alloys have better ductility than their as-cast counterparts due to the inhibition of twinning by the refined Mg2Zn11 intermetallic phase and the finer grain size.

Recycle spent graphite to defect-engineered,high-power graphite anode

Graphite is a dominant anode material for lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)due to its outstanding electrochemical ***,slow lithium ion(Li+)kinetics of graphite anode restricts its further ***,we report that high-temperature shock(HTS)can drive spent graphite(SG)into defect-rich recycled graphite(DRG)which is ideal for high-rate *** DRG exhibits the charging specific capacity of 323 mAh/g at a high current density of 2 C,which outperforms commercial graphite(CG,120 mAh/g).The eminent electrochemical performance of DRG can be attributed to the recovery of layered structure and partial remaining defects of SG during ultrafast heating and cooling process,which can effectively reduce total strain energy,accelerate the phase transition in thermodynamics and improve the Li+*** study provides a facile strategy to guide the re-graphitization of SG and design high performance battery electrode materials by defect engineering from the atomic level.

Characterisation of pore fluid salinity dependent evaporative dewatering of kaolin using dielectric spectroscopy

Realising the importance of pore fluid salinity on the dewatering behaviour of fine-grained porous systems,the present study systematically investigated such impacts on temporal moisture dynamics of kaolin subjected to evaporative dewatering.A detailed discussion is provided pertaining to the background processes dictating evaporative dewatering response and corresponding alterations in the dielectric behaviour of *** dependent dielectric spectra of soil,which can be considered as the fingerprint of the transient changes in the condition of water phase within the pore system of the soil and associated densification,are monitored in real time during dewatering using an open-ended coaxial probe with a vector network *** spatial sensitivity of the coaxial probe has been quantified through layered media *** the results of volume change behaviour of the material along with its moisture loss response,the study characterised the hydro-mechanical response of the material from the windows of frequency dependent dielectric spectroscopy.

Balancing nutrients in a toxic environment: the challenge of eating

Insect herbivores can regulate their food intake by mixing food sources with different nutrient content, but face the resulting challenge of ingesting various plant secondary metabolites. How insects deal with toxins in a complex nutrient environment is unclear. Here we investigated the influence of a classic plant secondary metabolite, allyl glucosinolate (sinigrin), and its hydrolyzed product allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), on the development of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) when fed on diets with different protein-to-carbohydrate (p : c) ratios. We also examined the effects of these toxins on larval biochemistry, by chemically analyzing the frass produced by insects feeding on the different diets. As expected, AITC had a greater negative effect than sinigrin on H. armigera life-history traits. However, AITC at low concentration appeared to have a positive effect on some traits. Both sinigrin and AITC-induced detoxification activity in the gut, and the reaction was related to diet protein concentration. High-protein diets can provide the required free amino acid, especially cysteine, needed for the detoxification process. The nutrient content of the diet influences how plant secondary metabolites are handled, and the use of artificial diets in experiments investigating the metabolic fate of plant secondary compounds needs to be carefully evaluated.

The nature and extent of environmental disturbance associated with mining commonly entails completely new and challenging combinations of climate,lithology and ***,the outcomes of ecological processes associated with the recovery or restoration of ecosystems cannot be predicted reliably from previously known associations between their physical and biological *** radically disturbed sites,we propose that it is not practicable to aim for the restoration of historical ***,hybrid(reversibly different)or novel(irreversibly different)ecosystems comprising new combinations of physical and biological components,including both native and non-native species,could provide levels of stability and functionality acceptable to all stakeholders and within feasible management *** propose that limiting physical conditions of the landscape can be identified and managed,and that alternative species combinations for introduction to these new landscapes may be considered with cautious optimism.

Structural development of vegetation on rehabilitated North Stradbroke Island:Above/belowground feedback may facilitate alternative ecological outcomes

Introduction:This study depicts broad-scale revegetation patterns following sand mining on North Stradbroke Island,south-eastern Queensland,***:Based on an ecological timeline spanning 4–20 years post-rehabilitation,the structure of these ecosystems(n=146)was assessed by distinguishing between periods of‘older’(pre-1995)and‘younger’(post-1995)rehabilitation ***:The general rehabilitation outlook appeared promising,whereby an adequate forest composition and suitable levels of native biodiversity(consisting of mixed-eucalypt communities)were achieved across the majority of rehabilitated sites over a relatively short ***,older sites(n=36)appeared to deviate relative to natural analogues as indicated by their lack of under-storey heath and simplified canopy composition now characterised by mono-dominant black sheoak(Allocasuarina littoralis)reaching up to 60%of the total tree *** changes coincided with lower soil fertility parameters(e.g.,total carbon,total nitrogen,and nutrient holding capacity)leading us to believe that altered growth conditions associated with the initial mining disturbance could have facilitated an opportunistic colonisation by this *** established,it is suspected that the black sheoak’s above/belowground ecological behaviour(i.e.,relating to its leaf-litter allelopathy and potential for soil-nitrogen fixation)further exacerbated its mono-dominant distribution by inhibiting the development of other native ***:Although rehabilitation techniques on-site have undergone refinements to improve site management,our findings support that putative changes in edaphic conditions in combination with the competitive characteristics of some plant species can facilitate conditions leading to alternative ecological outcomes among rehabilitated *** on these outcomes,future studies would benefit from in depth spatio-temporal analyses to verify these mechanisms at finer investigative sc
