A Numerical Simulation Study of Typhoon Rananim(0414)

Using the high-resolution non-hydrostatic model ARPS （Advanced Regional Prediction System）, the Typhoon Rananim （0414） was simulated by using the CINRAD Doppler radar data. The results before and after typhoon landfall show that model ARPS performs well to simulate the track, the variation of center pressure, as well as severe heavy rain of Rananim. Meanwhile, the simulated composite reflectivity was compared with the observed radar composite reflectivity. The numerical results reveal that the asymmetrical structure of Rananim plays an important role in its westward deflecting after landfall. The sensitivity simulation experiments of terrain effects on Rananim （0414） were also investigated, and the terrain of the southeastern China has important effects on Rananim turning right slightly of its track and increasing its intensity obviously, but when typhoon is far away from the coastline, the terrain only impacts slightly on the storm intensity during its landfall. The results show that topographic lifting contributes greatly to precipitation enhancement, and makes the distribution of precipitation more uneven.

In this study,the performances of the Community Atmosphere Model(CAM)and Pleim–Xiu(PX)surface layer parameterization schemes are investigated by using field *** parameterization schemes are evaluated against continuous momentum and sensible heat flux observations measured at two flat and homogeneous grassland sites in the suburb of Nanjing,eastern *** observations were conducted from 30 December 2014 to 18 April 2017 at Jiangxinzhou and from 9 February 2015 to 26 March 2018 at *** is found that the momentum flux is overall in good agreement with the observation,and the sensible heat flux is *** parameterizations of the momentum and sensible heat fluxes well capture the diurnal and seasonal patterns seen in the observations at the two *** Jiangxinzhou,the PX parameterization underestimates the momentum flux throughout the day and the CAM parameterization slightly overestimates it around the noon,while they underestimate the momentum flux throughout the *** two parameterizations overestimate the sensible heat flux in the daytime as well as over the entire *** Jiangning,the two parameterizations overestimate the momentum flux throughout the day and the sensible heat flux in the daytime,and overestimate both of them over the entire *** two parameterizations are not significantly different from each other in reproducing the turbulent fluxes at the same site,while they perform differently at the two sites in terms of *** addition,the parameterized fluxes increase with increased roughness length.

Potato grows in most part of China, it achieves higher yield and better quality in Gansu Province than in others. With global warming, its growth duration has been prolonged and sowing date become earlier than before. Therefore, to regulate its sowing date and growing period is of great significance for better harvest. In this study, experiments were conducted with six sowing-date treatments of potato in Dingxi, which is in the Loess Plateau of central Gansu Province in Northwest China in 2010. The growth period, morphological index and change in yield and their relationships with temperature, precipitation, and other climatic factors were investigated for each treatment. Results show that the crop with different sowing dates experienced different climate conditions, leading to distinct growth duration, plant height, and leaf area index. The growth duration was shortened due to a delay in sowing date. For each 15-day delay in sowing, the growth duration was reduced by 12 days on average. A significant linear relationship was found between numbers of days either from seeding to emergence or from flowering to harvest and mean temperature over the corresponding period. Dry matter accumulation, tuber fresh weight, and final yield were all decreased because of insufficient cumulative temperature over the shorter growing periods. Marked differences in tuber yield were discovered among the six treatments of sowing date, the potato planted on May 27 giving the highest yield. The potato planted either earlier or later would produce invariably lower yield than the treatment of May 27. Late May therefore can be taken as the optimum sowing time of potato in this region because the crop can fully utilize thermal resource. We conclude that to postpone sowing time is a good practice for potato production to adapt to climate warming in the Loess Plateau of central Gansu, China.

Indonesia is situated at the juncture of three major tectonic plates: the Eurasian, the Pacific and the Indo-Australian plates. As a result, many parts of the country are classified as being at a high risk of earthquake and tsunami disasters. In Indonesia, the bureau of meteorology and Geophysics (BMG) is the agency responsible for the monitoring of tectonic earthquakes and tsunamis induced by them. For this purpose, BMG operates seismic networks throughout Indonesia. In order to serve better, BMG will have to improve its monitoring system. Many agencies and universities in Indonesia have done research in the field of seismology, including seismotectonics, earthquake hazards, and so on. Joint research has been done with agencies/universities from abroad. Considering the fact that some earthquake prone areas in Indonesia suffer from frequent disasters, a study on earthquake prediction in some areas of interest would contribute to achieving some long-term goals of the bureau.

The establishment of the ASEAN Earthquake Information Center (AEIC) was endorsed by the 40th Meeting of the Committee on Science and Technology held in October 2000, at the request of the ASEAN Sub-Committee on meteorology and Geophysics (SCMG) to obtain the ASEAN Standing Committee’s (ASC) approval to officially use the name “ASEAN Earthquake Information Center (AEIC)”. As part of AEIC activities, the SCMG implemented a project on the ASEAN Seismic Network for Rapid Exchange of Strong Earthquake Data (ASNET RESED). The project was implemented by the ASCMG with funding support from the Government of Japan through the Japan ASEAN Co-operation Promotion Program (JACPP). The aim of the project is to facilitate the rapid exchange of data and information on earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 5.5 on the Richter scale, and to link all of the ASEAN National Seismological Centers through the Internet to disseminate earthquake information. For the future program, we propose a seismic data exchange between the National Seismological Centers in ASEAN countries as well as world seismological centers using the facilities in the AEIC. The plan is basically to develop and update the software and hardware in the NSC and AEIC for data communication. To refresh our knowledge in seismology and data communication, we arrange the training sessions for both topics.

According to meteorological data at Binzhou Meteorological Station during 1981 -2010, basic climate characteristics of meteorological factors （such as temperature, relative humidity and wind velocity, etc. ） related to human comfort are analyzed, and temporal-spatial distribution characteristics of human comfort in Binzhou City are studied. Then, human comfort of tourism in Binzhou City is evaluated. The impacts of each meteorological factor on comfort in different seasons and change tendency of comfort are discussed, and the optimal tourism time in Binzhou City is analyzed.

Hurricanes Lane intensified in the Central Pacific with data from reconnaissance aircraft indicating it reached category 5 intensity on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale while moving closer to Hawaii. The cyclone weakened as it moved closer to the Hawaiian Islands with its closest approach at 1500UTC 25 August 2018 when 175 km south southwest of Honolulu with a central pressure of 995 hPa. The impact on Hawaii was mainly record rainfall and the structure of this weather system is examined here to show how the winds turning anticyclonically with height in the lower to middle level troposphere play a crucial role in the intensification of Hurricane Lane to category 5 intensity and the generation of extreme rainfall.
