Quantifying both climate and land use/cover changes on runoff variation in Han River basin, China

Climate change and land use/cover change(LUCC)can both exert great impacts on the generation processes of precipitation and ***,previous studies usually neglected considering the contribution component of future LUCC in evaluating changes in hydrological *** this study,an integrated framework is developed to quantify and partition the impact of climate change and LUCC on future runoff ***,a daily bias correction(DBC)method and the Cellular Automaton-Markov(CA-Markov)model are used to project future climate and LUCC scenarios,and then future runoff is simulated by the calibrated Soil and Water Assessment Tool(SWAT)model with different climate and LUCC ***,the uncertainty of future runoff and the contribution rate of the two driving factors are systematically *** Han River basin in China was selected as a case *** indicate that:1)both climate change and LUCC will contribute to future runoff intensification,the variation of future runoff under combined climate and LUCC is larger than these under climate change or LUCC alone;2)the projected uncertainty of median value of multi-models under RCP4.5(RCP8.5)will reach 18.14%(20.34%),12.18%(14.71%),11.01%(13.95%),and 11.41%(14.34%)at Baihe,Ankang,Danjiangkou,and Huangzhuang stations,respectively;3)the contribution rate of climate change to runoff at Baihe,Ankang,Danjiangkou,and Huangzhuang stations under RCP4.5(RCP8.5)are 91%-98%(84%-94%),while LUCC to runoff under RCP4.5(RCP8.5)only accounts for 2%-9%(6%-16%)in the annual *** study may provide useful adaptive strategies for policymakers on future water resources planning and management.

A varied class method is applied to calculate the effective discharges and their variations after the Three Gorges Dam(TGD)construction based on the mean daily flow discharge and suspended sediment concentration field data from 1981 to *** comparison,the bankfull discharges are also determined according to the cross-section profiles and flow discharge-stage *** results show that a bimodal effective discharge curve usually exists at the fixed sites,which generates two effective discharges(Q_(e1) and Q_(e2))within the moderate flow *** the quasi-equilibrium circumstances of the pre-dam period,effective discharges are closely related to the mean annual runoff,with a narrow range of regional variations in occurrence *** analyses draw the conclusion that the relatively higher unsaturation degrees of the pre-dam effective discharges caused by dam interception and riverbed coarsening are the primary cause of the increase in effective discharges from Yichang to Shashi,while the more frequent low and medium discharges due to flow regulation drive the decrease in effective discharges from Jianli to *** slightly elevated flood levels and descending bankfull levels collaboratively result in the decrease of bankfull discharges from Yichang to Shashi,while the lowered bed elevation causes the increase in bankfull discharges from Luoshan to ***,the bankfull discharge in the Middle and Lower Yangtze River is larger than effective discharge and approaches the 1.5-year recurrence interval discharge.

The Pamir-Hindu Kush region at the western end of the Himalayan-Tibet orogen is one of the most active regions on the globe with strong seismicity and deformation and provides a window to evaluate continental collision linked to two intra-continental subduction zones with different *** seismicity and seismic tomography data show a steep northward subducting slab beneath the Hindu Kush and southward subducting slab under the ***,we collect seismic catalogue with 3988 earthquake events to compute seismicity images and waveform data from 926 earthquake events to invert focal mechanism solutions and stress field with a view to characterize the subducting slabs under the Pamir-Hindu Kush *** results define two distinct seismic zones:a steep one beneath the Hindu Kush and a broad one beneath the *** and intermediate-depth earthquakes are mainly distributed in the Hindu Kush region which is controlled by thrust faulting,whereas the Pamir is dominated by strike-slip stress regime with shallow and intermediate-depth *** area where the maximum principal stress axis is vertical in the southern Pamir corresponds to the location of a highconductivity low-velocity region that contributes to the seismogenic processes in this *** interpret the two distinct seismic zones to represent a double-sided subduction system where the Hindu Kush zone represents the northward subduction of the Indian plate,and the Pamir zone shows southward subduction of the Eurasian plate.A transition fault is inferred in the region between the Hindu Kush and the Pamir which regulates the opposing directions of motion of the Indian and Eurasian plates.

Surface soil moisture has great impact on both meso-and microscale atmospheric processes,especially on severe local convection processes and on the dynamics of short-lived torrential *** promote the performance of the land surface model (LSM) in surface soil moisture simulations,a hybrid hydrologic runoff parameterization scheme based upon the essential modeling theories of the Xin'anjiang model and Topography based hydrological Model (TOPMODEL) was developed in preference to the simple water balance model (SWB) in the Noah *** a strategy for coupling and integrating this modified Noah LSM to the Global/Regional Assimilation and Prediction System (GRAPES) analogous to that used with the standard Noah LSM,a simulation of atmosphere-land surface interactions for a torrential event during 2007 in Shandong was *** results suggested that the surface,10-cm depth soil moisture simulated by GRAPES using the modified hydrologic approach agrees well with the *** from the simulated results were found,especially over eastern *** simulated results,compared with the products of the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) soil moisture datasets,indicated a consistent spatial pattern over all of *** temporal variation of surface soil moisture was validated with the data at an observation station,also demonstrated that GRAPES with modified Noah LSM exhibits a more reasonable response to precipitation events,even though biases and systematic trends may still exist.

Background:The carbon pools of forest soils play a vital role in global carbon sequestration and *** management can regulate the sequestration and output of forest soil carbon pools to a certain extent;however,the kinetics of the effects of forest density on soil carbon pools require further ***:We established sample plots with stand density gradients in three different aged Larix principis-rupprechtii plantations and quantified the soil respiration,soil organic carbon(SOC),soil dissolved organic carbon(DOC),microbial biomass carbon(MBC),light fraction organic carbon(LFOC),and readily oxidized carbon(ROC).Results and conclusions:During the growth and development of plantations,stand density is an essential factor that impacts soil respiration and its associated *** density was observed to promote both the soil and heterotrophic respiration rates and the sequestration of MBC and LFOC,whereas it inhibited the sequestration of *** soil,heterotrophic,and autotrophic respiration rates of older forest stands were relatively rapid,whereas the contents of SOC,MBC,LFOC,DOC,and ROC were higher and more sensitive to changes in stand *** MBC,LFOC,and ROC in soil labile organic carbon were closely related to both the soil and heterotrophic respiration,but not the *** them,the LFOC and MBC played the roles of“warehouse”and“tool”and were significantly correlated with soil and heterotrophic *** ROC,as a“raw material”,exhibited a significantly negative correlation with the soil and heterotrophic *** the soil and heterotrophic respiration rates were rapid,the ROC content in the soil maintained the low level of a“dynamically stabilized”*** stand density regulated heterotrophic respiration by affecting the soil labile organic carbon,which provided an essential path for the stand density to regulate soil respiration.

Modified QUICK Schemes for 3D Advection-Diffusion Equation of Pollutants on Unstructured Grids

In the framework of finite volume method(FVM),two modified schemes of quadratic upstream interpolation for convective kinematics(QUICK),namely quasi-QUICK(Q-QUICK) and normal quasi-QUICK(NQ-QUICK),for improving the precision of convective flux approximation are verified in 3D unsteady advectiondiffusion equation of pollutants on unstructured *** constructed auxiliary nodes for Q-QUICK or NQQUICK are composed of two neighboring nodes plus the next upwind node;the later node is generated from intersection of the line of current neighboring nodes and their corresponding *** numerical results show that Q-QUICK and NQ-QUICK overwhelm central differencing scheme(CDS) in computational accuracy and behave similar numerical stability to upwind difference scheme(UDS),hybrid differencing scheme(HDS) and power difference scheme(PDS) after applying the deferred correction *** corresponding CPU time is approximately equivalent to that of traditional difference *** addition,their abilities for adapting high grid deformation are *** is so promising to apply the suggested schemes to simulate pollutant transportation on arbitrary 3D natural boundary in the hydraulic or environmental engineering.

Temporal and Spatial Variability of Dissolved Organic Carbon Concentration in the Xijiang River, South China

A whole year analysis of riverine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in the Xijiang River (XJR), South China, showed that the mean riverine DOC concentration (1.24 mg L-1) in the XJR was notably lower than the averaged value (5.75 mg L-1) of the global riverine DOC concentration in several major rivers. There is an inconspicuous monthly fluctuation of the DOC signal in the XJR, but on a semi-yearly time scale, however, the riverine DOC concentration had significant difference between hydrological seasons. The DOC level during the flood season (1.18 mg L-1) was less than that during the non-flood season (1.40 mg L-1). Owing to the concomitance of the flushing and dilution effects of the runoff during the high-water period, the variation of riverine DOC concentration with discharge in the XJR differed from that reported in many other major rivers. The DOC export flux above the city of Wuzhou was about 0.62× 106 g C km-2 yr-1. The DOC transported during the "056" Massive Flood period comprised 30.35% of the annual total, while the discharge accounted for 36.32% of the total annual flow. The characteristics in riverine DOC concentration in the XJR were attributed to the combined effect of the geomorphologic, monsoon climatic and hydrological processes as well as land-use within the drainage basin.
