Effects of Aromatherapy on Physical and Mental Health of Cancer Patients Undergoing Radiotherapy and/or Chemotherapy: A Meta-Analysis

Backgroup:Currently,aromatherapy is being increasingly utilized in clinical practice,particularly in managing the side effects associated with radiotherapy and chemoradiotherapy.However,it remains to be established whether aromatherapy can effectively alleviate these symptoms.Objective:To investigate the effects of aromatherapy on the physical and mental health of patients with cancer undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy.Methods:Seven databases were researched from inception until September 29,2023,including PubMed,Scopus,and Web of Science,chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure,Wanfang database,China Biology Medicine disc and VIP chinese medical Journal Database.Review Manager version 5.3 was utilized for data analysis.The Cochrane Risk of Bias tool RoB2 was employed to evaluate the quality of the literature included in the study.Evidence quality rating was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment,Development,and Evaluation(GRADE) approach through the GRADEpro GDT online tool.Results:Nineteen studies involving 1,541 patients were included.Aromatherapy can alleviate nausea [relative risk(RR)=0.64,95% confidence interval(CI):0.53 to 0.78,P<0.05,I^(2)=46%;standardized mean difference(SMD)=-0.86,95% CI:-1.21 to-0.51,P<0.05,I^(2)=64%] and vomiting(RR=0.54,95% CI:0.42 to 0.69,P<0.05,I^(2)=35%;SMD=-1.28,95% CI:-1.52 to-1.03,P<0.05,I^(2)=92%),improve sleep disorders [mean difference(MD)=-3.39,95% CI:-3.95 to-2.84,P<0.05,I^(2)=0%],relieve pain(SMD=-1.58,95% CI:-1.96 to-1.21,P<0.05,I^(2)=0%),mitigate fatigue(SMD=-1.28,95% CI:-2.44 to-0.11,P<0.05,I^(2)=93%) and enhance quality of life(SMD=0.50,95% CI:0.22 to 0.79,P<0.05,I^(2)=0%) in cancer patients after radiotherapy and chemotherapy,but it may not have a significant effect on anxiety.The risk of bias was high in the included studies using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool RoB2,and no studies were considered to be of high grade according to the GRADE system.Conclusions:Aromatherapy is an efficacious,safe and economic adjunctive therapy for cancer patien

Ginsenoside Rd Induces Differentiation of Myeloid Leukemia Cells via Regulating ERK/GSK-3β Signaling Pathway

Objective: To investigate the role of ginsenoside Rd（GRd） in acute myeloid leukemia（AML） cell differentiation. Methods: AML cells were treated with GRd（25, 50, 100 and 200 μg/mL）, retinoic acid（RA, 0.1g/L） and PD98059（20 mg/mL） for 72 h, cell survival was detected by methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazolium bromide and colony formation assays, and cell cycle was detected by flow cytometry. Cell morphology and differentiation were observed by Wright-Giemsa staining, peroxidase chemical staining and cellular immunochemistry assay, respectively. The protein expression levels of GATA binding protein 1（GATA-1）, purine rich Box-1（PU.1）, phosphorylated-extracellular signal-related kinase（p-ERK）, ERK, phosphorylated-glycogen synthase kinase-3β（p-GSK3β）, GSK3β and signal transducer and activator of transcription 1（STAT1） were detected by Western blot. Thirty-six mice were randomly divided into 3 groups using a random number table: model control group（non-treated）, GRd group [treated with 200 mg/（kg·d） GRd] and homoharringtonine（HTT） group [treated with 1 mg/（kg·d） HTT]. A tumor-bearing nude mouse model was established, and tumor weight and volume were recorded. Changes of subcutaneous tumor tissue were observed after hematoxylin and eosin staining. WT1 and GATA-1 expressions were detected by immunohistochemical staining. Results: The cell survival was inhibited by GRd in a dose-dependent manner and GRd caused G0/G1cell arrest（P<0.05）. GRd treatment induced leukemia cell differentiation, showing increased expressions of peroxidase and specific proteins concerning erythrogenic or granulocytic differentiation（P<0.05）. GRd treatment elicited upregulation of p-ERK, p-GSK-3β and STAT1 expressions in cells, and reversed the effects of PD98059 on inhibiting the expressions of peroxidase, GATA-1 and PU.1（P<0.05）. After GRd treatment, tumor weight and volume of mice were decreased, and tumor cells underwent massive apoptosis and necrosis（P<0.05）. Drug-induced liver injury(DILI)is a common adverse drug reaction,which can even result in liver failure[1,2].The chinese medical Association issued the Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of DILI based on the Roussel Uclaf Causality Assessment Method(RUCAM)in 2015[3].A previous study reported that traditional chinese medicines(TCMs),herbal and dietary supplements,and antituberculosis drugs were the main causes of DILI in China[4].Herb-induced liver injury(HILI)refers to liver injury caused by TCMs,natural drugs,and their related preparations[5].

Acupuncturea representative and historical treatment in traditional chinese medicine(TCM),has been used to cure diseases for chinese people in the past centuries.Since the late 1990s,acupuncture has been further accepted worldwide.The World Health Organization(WHO)proposed Clinical Research Specification for acupuncture in 1995 and the US Food and Drug Administration(FDA)approved acupuncture as a complementary and alternative therapy for various kinds of diseases in 1996,with clinical advantages such as convenience and effectiveness[1].Cumulative evidence has proved that acupuncture could produce different degrees of efficacy for treating various kinds of diseases(such as neuropathic pain,migraine,Parkinson's disease et al.)and alleviate symptoms[2-4].However,unlike its evidence-based efficacies.

Neurological manifestations of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)are less noticeable than the respiratory symptoms,but they may be associated with disability and mortality in COVID-19.Even though Omicron caused less severe disease than Delta,the incidence of neurological manifestations is similar.More than 30%of patients experienced“brain fog”,delirium,stroke,and cognitive impairment,and over half of these patients presented abnormal neuroimaging outcomes.In this review,we summarize current advances in the clinical findings of neurological manifestations in COVID-19 patients and compare them with those in patients with influenza infection.We also illustrate the structure and cellular invasion mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2 and describe the pathway for central SARS-CoV-2 invasion.In addition,we discuss direct damage and other pathological conditions caused by SARS-CoV-2,such as an aberrant interferon response,cytokine storm,lymphopenia,and hypercoagulation,to provide treatment ideas.This review may offer new insights into preventing or treating brain damage in COVID-19.

Satellite glial cells in sensory ganglia play a wider role in chronic pain via multiple mechanisms

Satellite glial cells are unique glial cells that surround the cell body of primary sensory neurons.An increasing body of evidence suggests that in the presence of inflammation and nerve damage,a significant number of satellite glial cells become activated,thus triggering a series of functional changes.This suggests that satellite glial cells are closely related to the occurrence of chronic pain.In this review,we first summarize the morphological structure,molecular markers,and physiological functions of satellite glial cells.Then,we clarify the multiple key roles of satellite glial cells in chronic pain,including gap junction hemichannel Cx43,membrane channel Pannexin1,K channel subunit 4.1,ATP,purinergic P2 receptors,and a series of additional factors and their receptors,including tumor necrosis factor,glutamate,endothelin,and bradykinin.Finally,we propose that future research should focus on the specific sorting of satellite glial cells,and identify genomic differences between physiological and pathological conditions.This review provides an important perspective for clarifying mechanisms underlying the peripheral regulation of chronic pain and will facilitate the formulation of new treatment plans for chronic pain.

Roles of endophytic fungi in medicinal plant abiotic stress response and TCM quality development

Medicinal plants,as medicinal materials and important drug components,have been used in traditional and folk medicine for ages.However,being sessile organisms,they are seriously affected by extreme environmental conditions and abiotic stresses such as salt,heavy metal,temperature,and water stresses.Medicinal plants usually produce specific secondary metabolites to survive such stresses,and these metabolites can often be used for treating human diseases.Recently,medicinal plants have been found to partner with endophytic fungi to form a long-term,stable,and win-win symbiotic relationship.Endophytic fungi can promote secondary metabolite accumulation in medicinal plants.The close relationship can improve host plant resistance to the abiotic stresses of soil salinity,drought,and extreme temperatures.Their symbiosis also sheds light on plant growth and active compound production.Here,we show that endophytic fungi can improve the host medicinal plant resistance to abiotic stress by regulating active compounds,reducing oxidative stress,and regulating the cell ion balance.We also identify the deficiencies and burning issues of available studies and present promising research topics for the future.This review provides guidance for endophytic fungi research to improve the ability of medicinal plants to resist abiotic stress.It also suggests ideas and methods for active compound accumulation in medicinal plants and medicinal material development during the response to abiotic stress.

Clinical observation on 90 cases of primary dysmenorrhea treated by buccal acupuncture therapy:a randomized controlled study

OBJECTIVE:To explore the short-term and long-term efficacy of buccal acupuncture therapy in the treatment of patients with primary dysmenorrhea(PD).METHODS:A total of 90 patients with PD who were admitted to the Second Affiliated Hospital of zhejiang university of Traditional chinese Medicine from January 2020 to December 2021 were included in this study and randomly divided into three groups,including the observation group,the control group,and the placebo group,with 30 patients in each group.Patients in the observation group were treated according to the syndrome types of Traditional chinese Medicine,those in the control group were treated with Saridon,and those in the placebo group received a placebo.The visual analog scale(VAS)scores of these patients were evaluated at different time points(before treatment,5 min after needle retention,30 min after needle retention,1 h after treatment,2 h after treatment,1 d after treatment,and 2 d after treatment).The Cox Menstrual Symptom Scale(CMSS)scores were assessed before the treatment and after three courses of treatment.Besides,these two scales were also evaluated during follow-up.Moreover,the pain score and adverse reactions of these patients were assessed during treatment.RESULTS:After treatment,the VAS and CMSS scores in the observation group decreased significantly(P<0.05)5 and 30 min after needle retention and after treatment.CONCLUSION:Buccal acupuncture therapy is verified to have short-term efficacy in the treatment of PD.In addition,this therapy has an immediate analgesic effect and long-term efficacy in reducing the severity and frequency of PD.

With morphological features resembling hepatocellular carcinoma,hepatoid adenocarcinoma of the lung(HAL)is a rare and aggressive subtype of lung cancer with a 5-year survival of only 8%.1 Most HAL patients present increased serum alpha-fetoprotein(AFP)levels that are commonly related to poor prognosis.Most insights into HAL have come from case series or reports,and TP53 is frequently mutated in HAL.The heterogeneity of HAL complicates the diagnosis.With no established standard,the management of HAL is modeled on that of classical lung adenocarcinoma,although with dismal outcomes.2 Herein,we reported the effective management of a stage IIIb HAL patient with perioperative chemoimmunotherapy and curative-intent surgery.The patient remained disease-free and minimal residual disease(MRD)-negative for more than one year after surgery.

NLRP3/1-mediated pyroptosis:beneficial clues for the development of novel therapies for Alzheimer’s disease

The inflammasome is a multiprotein complex involved in innate immunity that mediates the inflammatory response leading to pyroptosis,which is a lytic,inflammatory form of cell death.There is accumulating evidence that nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat pyrin domain containing 3(NLRP3)inflammasome-mediated microglial pyroptosis and NLRP1 inflammasome-mediated neuronal pyroptosis in the brain are closely associated with the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease.In this review,we summarize the possible pathogenic mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease,focusing on neuroinflammation.We also describe the structures of NLRP3 and NLRP1 and the role their activation plays in Alzheimer’s disease.Finally,we examine the neuroprotective activity of small-molecule inhibitors,endogenous inhibitor proteins,microRNAs,and natural bioactive molecules that target NLRP3 and NLRP1,based on the rationale that inhibiting NLRP3 and NLRP1 inflammasome-mediated pyroptosis can be an effective therapeutic strategy for Alzheimer’s disease.
