Statistical Characteristics of Raindrop Size Distribution in the South China Monsoon Region(Guangdong Province)

While heavy rainfall frequently takes place in southern China during summer monsoon seasons,quantitative precipitation forecast skills are relatively ***,detailed knowledge about the raindrop size distribution(DSD)is useful in improving the quantitative precipitation estimation and *** on the data during 2018-2022 from 86stations in a ground-based optical disdrometer measurement network,the characteristics of the DSD in Guangdong province are investigated in terms of the particle size distribution(N(D)),mass-weighted mean diameter(Dm) and other integral DSD parameters such as radar reflectivity(Z),rainfall rate(R) and liquid water content(LWC).In addition,the effects of geographical locations,weather systems(tropical cyclones,frontal systems and the summer monsoon) and precipitation types on DSD characteristics are also *** results are shown as follows.1) Convective precipitation has a broader N(D) and larger mean particle diameter than the stratiform precipitation,and the DSD observations in Guangdong are consistent with the three-parameter gamma *** relationships between the Z and R for stratiform and convective precipitation are also derived for the province,i.e.,Z=332.34 R1.32and Z=366.26R1.42which is distinctly different from that of the Next-generation Weather Radar(NEXRAD) Z-R relationship in United States.2) In the rainy season(April-September),the Dm, R and LWC are larger than those in the dry season(OctoberMarch).Moreover the above parameters are larger,especially in mid-May,which is the onset of the South China Sea summer monsoon.3) The spatial analysis of DSD shows that the coastal station observations indicate a smaller Dmand a larger normalized intercept parameter(log10Nw),suggestive of maritime-like *** larger and log10Nwis smaller in the inland area,suggestive of continental-like rainfall.4) Affected by such weather systems as the tropical cyclone,frontal system and summer monsoon,the DSD shows

Analysis of the Winter Cloud-to-Ground Lightning Activity and Its Synoptic Background in China during 2010-20

Cloud-to-ground(CG)lightning data and the ECMWF ERA-Interim reanalysis dataset are analyzed to gain insight into the spatiotemporal distribution and synoptic background of winter-season CG flashes between December 2010 and February 2020 in *** identify three Winter Lightning Frequent Areas(WLAs):the southwest side of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau(WLA1),the east side of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau(WLA2),and the Poyang Lake Plain(WLA3).The CG lightning flashes most frequently occur at local midnight and have a monthly peak in *** CG lightning in WLA1 is mostly generated in non-frontal weather;however,the lightning in WLA2 and WLA3 mostly occurs in frontal *** frontal circulation situation is divided into four typical types:transversal trough after high pressure,low vortex,confrontational convergence,and asymptotic *** all typical weather patterns,the lightning occurs downstream of a 500 hPa trough and is accompanied by a southwesterly low-level *** convective parameters of winter thunderstorms differ greatly from those of summer *** maximum convective available potential energy(MCAPE)and K-index(KI)are more useful metrics than convective available potential energy(CAPE)and Showalter index(SI)during *** study further deepens the understanding of the distribution characteristics of winter CG lightning in China,which motivates further research to improve the ability of winter thunderstorm prediction.

Changes in Typhoon Regional Heavy Precipitation Events over China from 1960 to 2018

In earlier studies,objective techniques have been used to determine the contribution of tropical cyclones to precipitation(TCP)in a region,where the Tropical cyclone Precipitation Event(TPE)and the Regional Heavy Precipitation Events(RHPEs)are defined and *** this study,TPE and RHPEs are combined to determine the Typhoon Regional Heavy Precipitation Events(TRHPEs),which is employed to evaluate the contribution of tropical cyclones to regional extreme precipitation *** on the Objective Identification Technique for Regional Extreme Events(OITREE)and the Objective Synoptic Analysis Technique(OSAT)to define TPE,temporal and spatial overlap indices are developed to identify the combined events as *** daily precipitation data and TC best-track data over the western North Pacific from 1960 to 2018,86 TRHPEs have been *** contribute as much as 20%of the RHPEs,but100%of events with extreme individual precipitation *** major TRHPEs continued for approximately a week after tropical cyclone landfall,indicating a role of post landfall *** frequency and extreme intensity of TRHPEs display increasing trends,consistent with an observed positive trend in the mean intensity of TPEs as measured by the number of daily station precipitation observations exceeding 100 mm and 250 *** frequent landfalling Southeast and South China TCs induced more serious impacts in coastal areas in the Southeast and the South during 1990-2018 *** roles of cyclone translation speed and"shifts"in cyclone tracks are examined as possible explanations for the temporal trends.

CHARACTERISTICS AND RELATIONS OF LIGHTNING AND RADAR ECHOES FOR STRONG CONVECTIVE RAINSTORMS IN YUNNAN

Based on cloud-ground lightning data and Doppler weather radar echo products, both thecharacteristics and the relations of lightning and radar echoes for strong convective rainstorms over Yunnanare analyzed during the flood season of 2007. The results show that most rainstorms are convective in whichlightning is mostly negative and the negative lightning number accounts for more than 90% of the *** the correlation between precipitation and the lightning number is small on the rainstorm day, thelarge day-lightning frequency usually produces heavy precipitation. Hourly evolution of precipitation andlightning frequency shows peak-style characteristics. And their evolution is very coherent in strongrainstorm, but lightning often occurs before precipitation, whose peaks are in phase with or 1-to-2-hourlagged behind that of lightning frequency. Meanwhile the peaks of positive frequency are in phase with orfall behind that of precipitation. When the wind field is heterogeneous in radial velocity, it is conducive toboth the development of convection echoes and occurrence of lightning. Strong lightning-producingconvective rainstorms correspond to strong echo fields and usually result in reflectivity above 30 dBZ andecho top ET of more than 9 km, respectively.

ANALYSES OF INTRASEASONAL OSCILLATION CHARACTERISTICS OF FLOOD-CAUSING RAINSTORMS IN XIJIANG RIVER VALLEY DURING THE ANNUALLY FIRST RAINING SEASON IN THE PAST YEARS

Based on the daily precipitation data of nine stations representing the Xijiang River valley and the National Center for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research (USA) reanalysis data, this study uses the wavelet analysis and band-pass filter methods to investigate the atmospheric intraseasonal oscillation characteristics of flood-causing rainstorms in the valley during the annually first raining seasons in 1968, 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2005. Results show that the daily precipitation in the valley exhibits significant quasi-biweekly (10 to 20 days) oscillations. The flood-causing rainstorms in the valley were mainly associated with the confluence of low-frequency warm and humid airflow in the lower latitudes and cold and dry airflow in the higher latitudes. The low-frequency vortexes were propagating or in control when this type of rainstorms took place over the valley, being favorable for the convergence of moisture at lower levels and thus vital to the formation of the rainstorms.

DIAGNOSTIC ANALYSIS OF THE RE-INTENSIFICATION OF HIGOS IN SOUTHERN CHINA AFTER LANDFALL

The NCEP Global Data Assimilation System analysis of grid data, satellite products of Naval Research Laboratory, conventional meteorological data and observations of automatic weather stations in Guangdong province were used together with environmental conditions, atmospheric circulation, and physical characteristics to diagnose the cause and mechanism of the intensification of tropical cyclone Higos in Southern China. The results showed that favorable environmental conditions of high temperature, humidity of the underlying surface, strong upper divergence, weak vertical wind shear, and the persistence of a southwest jet stream beside the southern Higos were the necessary ingredients that contributed to the maintenance of intensity and re-intensification of Higos. The sinking intrusion of cold air from the lower troposphere was the critical condition for its intensification over land. The frontal genesis caused by weak cold air increased the lower tropospheric convergence and updraft, and the condensation latent heat released by heavy rains promoted convergence. From this positive feedback process, Higos obtained an increasing of positive vorticity and re-intensified over land. The re-intensification was due not only to the build-up of wind and the reduction of pressure but also to the simultaneous warm-up of its warm core.

Evolution of meteorological Conditions during a Heavy Air Pollution Event under the Influence of Shallow Foehn in Urumqi, China

The air pollution in Urumqi which is located on the northern slope of the Tianshan Mountains in northwestern China,is very serious in *** particular importance is the influence of terrain-induced shallow foehn,known locally as elevated southeasterly gale(ESEG).It usually modulates atmospheric boundary layer structure and wind field patterns and produces favorable meteorological conditions conducive to hazardous air *** 2013-17,Urumqi had an average of 50 d yr-1 of heavy pollution(daily average PM2.5 concentration>150μg m-3),of which 41 days were in *** majority(71.4%)of heavy pollution processes were associated with the shallow *** on microwave radiometer,wind profiler,and surface observations,the surface meteorological fields and boundary layer evolution during the worst pollution episode in Urumqi during 16-23 February 2013 are *** results illustrate the significant role of shallow foehn in the building,strengthening,and collapsing of temperature *** were four wind field patterns corresponding to four different phases during the whole pollution *** most serious pollution phase featured shallow foehn activity in the south of Urumqi city and the appearance of an intense inversion layer below 600 *** convergence caused by foehn and mountain-valley winds was sustained during most of the phase,resulting in pollutants sinking downward to the lower boundary layer and accumulating around urban *** key indicators of such events identified in this study are highly correlated to particulate matter concentrations and could be used to predict heavy pollution episodes in the feature.

Impact of cropland degradation in the rural-urban fringe on urban heat island and heat stress during summer heat waves in the Yangtze River Delta

China has experienced rapid urbanization since the 1980s,which has significantly reduced croplands around *** from transition to urban land,croplands have also experienced degradation into cropland/natural vegetation mosaic in the rural-urban ***,scant attention has been paid to the climatic effect of such land cover change so *** study thus investigated the potential impacts of the conversion from irrigated cropland into the mosaic on regional hot extremes and heat stress by taking the Yangtze River Delta(YRD)as an *** heatwave events in the summer of 2013 and 2017 were simulated using the Weather Research and Forecasting Model(WRF).Three group experiments with various representative land cover scenarios,i.e.,a default setting experiment with outdated land cover(Exp USGS),a control experiment with updated land cover(CTL),and a sensitivity experiment with modified mosaic land cover(Exp MOS),were performed for comparative *** show that CTL using the updated land cover data from China(ChinaLC)reproduced the spatial variation of observed 2-m air temperature and relative humidity better than Exp *** the irrigated cropland was converted into the mosaic,the 2-m temperatures in most areas of the YRD became significantly higher than those in Exp MOS due to the lower albedo and leaf area index(LAI)in the newly emerged mosaic *** land cover change produced a negative contribution to the urban heat island(UHI)intensity,while it had a positive effect on extreme high temperature under heat wave *** suggests a more cautious usage of the traditional definition of the UHI index is required when investigating the heat island effect,because the rural warming around an urban area may expand the heat island and enhance its heat *** the heatwave periods,the high temperature areas in CTL were larger than those in MOS,and the hot day areas increased by an average of 25.9%.Increase in air temperature further

Variations of Winter Precipitation over Southeastern China in Association with the North Atlantic Oscillation

The synoptic-scale winter precipitation variations over southeastem China （22°-32°N, 105°-125°E） and their asso- ciation with the North Atlantic Oscillation （NAO） during 1951-2007 are investigated in this paper. The variability of wintertime precipitation is characterized by meridional displacement of its maximum center. Two precipitation re- gimes, with maximum centers located over the Yangtze and Pearl River basins, are identified via cluster analysis. Time-lagged analyses suggest that the two precipitation regimes are connected with the decaying phases of positive NAO （NAO＋） events of different amplitudes. A strong （medium） NAO＋ event is defined as one when the maximum amplitude of the NAO index exceeds 1.0 （in the range of 0.7-1.0） for at least 4 consecutive days and drops to less than 0.3 within 7 days following the peak index. After the peak of a strong NAO＋, southerly winds expand north- ward to the Yangtze River （about 30°N）, a northeast-southwest-tilted trough migrates to east of Lake Baikal, and cold air intrudes into central eastern China; thus, precipitation is strengthened over the Yangtze River basin where warm and cold air masses converge. In comparison, during the decaying phase of medium NAO＋ events, the south- erly winds are relatively weak, and precipitation tends to be enhanced at lower latitudes （around 25°N）. Further ana- lysis indicates that downstream Rossby-wave propagation may account for the latitudinal expansion of the southerly wind anomalies over the eastern coastal area of China during the decaying phase of NAO＋ events of different strengths.

The Relationship Between Indian Ocean SST and Tropical Cyclone Genesis Frequency over North Indian Ocean in May

Tropical cyclone(TC)activities in the North Indian Ocean(NIO)peak in May during the pre-monsoon period,but the TC frequency shows obvious inter-annual *** conducting statistical analysis and dynamic diagnosis of long-term data from 1948 to 2016,the relationship between the inter-annual variations of Indian Ocean SST and NIO TC genesis frequency in May is analyzed in this ***,the potential mechanism concerning the effect of SST anomaly on TC frequency is also *** findings are as follows:1)there is a broadly consistent negative correlation between NIO TC frequency in May and SST in the Indian Ocean from March to May,with the key influencing area located in the southwestern Indian Ocean(SWIO);2)the anomalies of SST in SWIO(SWIO-SST)are closely related to a teleconnection pattern surrounding the Indian Ocean,which can significantly modulate the high-level divergence,mid-level vertical motion and other related environmental factors and ultimately influence the formation of TCs over the NIO;3)the increasing trend of SWIO-SST may play an essential role in the downward trend of NIO TC frequency over the past 69 years.
