The subtropical region of China possesses abundant forest resources and features a mountainous *** the implementation of policies such as natural forest protection,the Grain for Green Project,and other initiatives since the beginning of the 21st century,coupled with climate change,the forest resources in this region have undergone significant changes compared to historical *** addition,forest resources distributing mainly in mountainous areas also implies that these changes may vary significantly with *** explore the spatiotemporal dynamics of forest distribution in subtropical China since 2000,especially the trend of changes with elevation,we analyzed the data from two land cover products focusing on forest cover and forest *** used a hierarchical approach,in which coarse-classification forest cover data with relatively small uncertainties impose constraints on forest type data with larger uncertainties,to achieve a reasonable balance between obtaining more details and reducing data *** first divided the forest cover data into‘unchanged'and‘changed'*** the constraints by the forest cover results,we further analyzed the‘unchanged'and‘changed'forest *** results indicated that,since the implementation of ecological engineering and management policies,54%of the area in the subtropical region had maintained unchanged forest cover attributes over the past 20 years,which implied the good state of ecological *** results also showed that dynamic conversions existed in the long term between forests and lands for essential production needs like *** elevational variations of forest cover suggested that the dominant changes came from the conversion between forests and croplands in low-elevation regions below 700 m,the conversion between forests and shrublands in mid-elevation regions of 700–1500 m,and the conversion between forests and grasslands in high-elevation regions above 2000 *** the regio

Peri-urban areas are playing an increasingly crucial role in the agricultural development and intensification in ***-urban agriculture is highly vulnerable to change compared with urban and rural agriculture,due to its location in transitional *** of peri-urban agricultural intensity can help guide regional *** this study,we assessed the sustainability of peri-urban areas based on agricultural intensity in Karawang Regency,*** developed a village-based index to assess the region’s agricultural intensity by rescaling the village agriculture index(VAI)and combining the local sustainability index(LSI)with factor *** the unit of analysis is the village,we modified the LSI to the village sustainability index(VSI).In addition,we also developed a logical matrix analysis to determine the level of agricultural sustainability(LoAS)of each *** combined results of the three indices(VAI,VSI,and LoAS)generated information about agricultural *** results indicated that peri-urban villages with high agricultural intensity tended to exhibit low levels of social welfare,economic development,and disaster ***,high agricultural intensity did not necessarily ensure the prosperity of the ***,there was the economic disparity among the villages in the study *** diversity of agricultural intensity seems to be more critical than promoting agricultural intensity ***,this study highlights the distinctive characteristics and dynamic of peri-urban *** approaches,variables,and information regarding the combination of agricultural intensity and sustainability need to be developed as valuable tools for regional planning.

Soil nutrient availability and their spatial distributions are strongly related to land use and landscape *** study aims to address the knowledge gap regarding the interaction between these factors and the underlying *** selected five land uses(grassland with Artemisia gmelinii,woodland with Robinia pseudoacacia,shrubland with Caragana korshinskii and Hippophae rhamnoides,and apple orchard with Malus pumila)and nine slope positions across hillslopes in the Loess Plateau,China,to investigate their combined effects on the contents and stocks of soil organic carbon(SOC),total nitrogen(TN)and total phosphorus(TP).Parametric and non-parametric statistical tests were conducted to determine the significant differences in the means or the medians of the soil nutrient *** showed that the SOC and TN contents of shrubland with Caragana korshinskii were statistically significantly greater than those of the grassland(pland,woodland and shrublands,and on the contrary,an increasing trend from the upper slope,to the middle slope,and to the foot slope was identified for the apple *** study highlights that land use,slope position and their interaction have significant effects on the spatial distributions of soil *** provides essential empirical evidence for the identification of the optimal vegetation type and slope positions in land management and vegetation restoration activities.

Steep-slope cropland plays a vital role in food production,economic development,ecosystem diversity,and Eu-ropean cultural ***,these systems are susceptible to extreme weather *** 2022 summer drought significantly impacted European agriculture,but the specific effects on steep-slope crops remain *** this is essential for comprehending similar future events and for implementing effective water management strategies to ensure the sustainability of steep-slope agriculture and associated ecosystem *** study quantitatively analyzes the spatial distribution of twelve major European steep-slope(>12%)crops and assesses agricultural drought severity during the 2022 events using open-access spatial *** satellite-based Vegetation Health Index(VHI)is utilized to identify critical *** show that olive grove is the most widespread crop in steep slope agriculture(34%of total area),followed by wheat(24%),maize(16%),and vineyard(11%).Almost half of the steep-slope agriculture in Europe suffered drought during summer *** were hardest affected at 79%,primarily in northern Portugal,northern Spain,southern France,and central *** followed at 62%,mainly in Spain,central Italy,southern France,and northern *** groves ranked third at 59%,with the most impact in northern Portugal,southern and central Spain,and southern *** was also significantly affected at 54%.In this paper,we therefore highlight the need to increase steep-slope agriculture resilience by improving water management and promoting sustainable land practices.

The mineralogical development and diagenetic sequence of lacustrine shales in the Chang 7 Member of the Yanchang Formation in the Ordos Basin are detailed studied. A model of their depositional system and a diagenetic diagram are proposed in this study. Through detailed petrographic, mineralogical, and elemental analyses, four distinct shale types are identified: argillaceous shale, siliceous shale, calcareous shale, and carbonate, clay, and silt-bearing shale. The main diagenetic process in argillaceous shale is the transformation of illite to smectite, negatively impacting shale porosity. Siliceous shale undergoes carbonate cementation and quartz dissolution, contributing to increased porosity, particularly in *** shale experiences diagenesis characterised by carbonate formation and dissolution, with a prevalence of siderite. In carbonate, clay, and silt-bearing shale, the dissolution of K-feldspar contributes to illitization of kaolinite. Argillaceous shale, characterised by more clay minerals and lower mesopore volume, is identified as a potential hydrocarbon seal. Siliceous shale, with the highest pore volume and abundant inter-mineral pores, emerges as a promising shale oil reservoir. These findings contribute to a comprehensive understanding of shale properties, aiding in the prediction of shale oil exploration potential in the studied area.
