Mode water is a distinct water mass characterized by a near vertical homogeneous layer or low potential vorticity, and is considered essential for understanding ocean climate variability. Based on the output of GFDL CM3, this study investigates the response of eastern subtropical mode water （ESTMW） in the North Pacific to two different single forcings： greenhouse gases （GHGs） and aerosol. Under GHG forcing, ESTMW is produced on lighter isopycnal surfaces and is decreased in volume. Under aerosol forcing, in sharp contrast, it is produced on denser isopycnal surfaces and is increased in volume. The main reason for the opposite response is because surface ocean-to-atmosphere latent heat flux change over the ESTMW formation region shoals the mixed layer and thus weakens the lateral induction under GHG forcing, but deepens the mixed layer and thus strengthens the lateral induction under aerosol forcing. In addition, local wind changes are also favorable to the opposite response of ESTMW production to GHG versus aerosol.

Based on hydrographic data obtained at an ice camp deployed in the Makarov Basin by the 4th Chinese Arctic Research Expedition in August of 2010, temporal variability of vertical heat flux in the upper ocean of the Makarov Basin is investigated together with its impacts on sea ice melt and evolution of heat content in the remnant of winter mixed layer （rWML）. The upper ocean of the Makarov Basin under sea ice is vertically stratified. Oceanic heat flux from mixed layer （ML） to ice evolves in three stages as a response to air temperature changes, fluctuating from 12.4 W/m2 to the maximum 43.6 W/m2. The heat transferred upward from ML can support （0.7＋0.3） cm/d ice melt rate on average, and daily variability of melt rate agrees well with the observed results. Downward heat flux from ML across the base of ML is much less, only 0.87 W/m2, due to enhanced stratification in the seasonal halocline under ML caused by sea ice melt, indicating that increasing solar heat entering summer ML is mainly used to melt sea ice, with a small proportion transferred downward and stored in the rWML. Heat flux from ML into rWML changes in two phases caused by abrupt air cooling with a day lag. Meanwhile, upward heat flux from Atlantic water （AW） across the base of rWML, even though obstructed by the cold halocline layer （CHL）, reaches 0.18 W/m2 on average with no obvious changing pattern and is also trapped by the rWML. Upward heat flux from deep AW is higher than generally supposed value near 0, as the existence of rWML enlarges the temperature gradient between surface water and CHL. Acting as a reservoir of heat transferred from both ML and AW, the increasing heat content of rWML can delay the onset of sea ice freezing.

Changes of air–sea coupling in the North Atlantic Ocean over the 20 th century are investigated using reanalysis data,climate model simulations, and observational data. It is found that the ocean-to-atmosphere feedback over the North Atlantic is significantly intensified in the second half of the 20 th century. This coupled feedback is characterized by the association between the summer North Atlantic Horseshoe（NAH） SST anomalies and the following winter North Atlantic Oscillation（NAO）. The intensification is likely associated with the enhancement of the North Atlantic storm tracks as well as the NAH SST anomalies. Our study also reveals that most IPCC AR4 climate models fail to capture the observed NAO/NAH coupled feedback.

Effects of extratropical solar penetration on the North Atlantic Ocean circulation and climate are investigated using a coupled ocean-atmosphere model.In this model,solar penetration generates basinwide cooling and warming in summer and winter,respectively.Associated with SST changes,annual mean surface wind stress is intensified in both the subtropical and subpolar North Atlantic,which leads to acceleration of both subtropical and subpolar gyres.Owing to warming in the subtropics and significant saltiness in the subpolar region,potential density decreases(increases) in the subtropical(subpolar)North Atlantic.The north-south meridional density gradient is thereby enlarged,accelerating the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation(AMOC).In addition,solar penetration reduces stratification in the upper ocean and favors stronger vertical convection,which also contributes to acceleration of the AMOC.

Knowledge of sea surface temperature(SST)behaviour is vital for long-term climate scenarios.This study highlights essential outcomes about the distinguishable and unsurprising warming of the SST along the southern border of the Levantine Basin.The analysis is based on monthly SST data for the period 1948-2018.The southern Levantine Basin has undergone SST increase,during the last 71 years.In this study,a consistent warming trend has been found for the analysed SST data series,with a rate of 0.04℃/a,i.e.,0.4℃/(10 a).From 1975 to 1991 the mean annual SST was 17.1℃,and this increased to be 19.2℃,over the period 2002-2018.Results revealed two opposite trends of variability:a decreasing trend(−0.06℃/a)over the period 1975-1991,and an increasing trend(0.2℃/a)from 2002 to 2018.Over the period 1948-2018,positive mean annual SST anomalies had an average of 1.8℃,and negative anomalies had an average of−1.1℃.The lowest SST total increase was found from January to April,with values about 0.03℃,while the highest warming appeared from June to September.The driving mechanisms behind the SST changes need to be more investigated,to understand the future trends and impacts of climate change in the Levantine Basin.

Atmospheric moisture transport plays an important role in latent heat release and hydrologic interactions in the Arctic.In recent years,with the rapid decline in sea ice,this transport has changed.Here,we calculated the vertically integrated atmospheric moisture meridional transport(AMTv)from two global reanalysis datasets,from1979–2015,and found moisture pathways into the central Arctic.Four stable pathways showed an occurrence frequency greater than 70%,and these pathways exhibited a perennial seasonal pattern in the atmosphere above the Laptev Sea Pathway(LSP),Canadian Arctic Archipelago Pathway(CAAP),both sides of the Greenland plateau.Another seasonal pathway appeared above the east of the Chukchi Sea(CSP)during the melting/freezing months(March to September).Through these pathways,AMTv contributed a total moisture exchange of60%–80%—averaged over a 75°N circle—and focused on the low troposphere.Transports across the LSP,CSP and CAAP pathways likely create an enclosed moisture route.Meridional moisture fluxes are intensified in the Pacific sector of Arctic(PSA),especially during melting/freezing months.AMTv interannual variabilities are illustrated mainly in the Laptev Sea and the east Greenland pathway.Results indicate that accompanying a tendency for a stronger Beaufort Sea High in this sea level pressure field,AMTv through PSA pathways,switched from output to input,and approximately 960 km^3 of equivalent liquid water was transferred into the central Arctic during each decade.The detrended AMTv increment is highly correlated with the rapid decline of old ice areas(correlation coefficient is–0.78)for their synchronous fluctuations in the 1980 s and the last decade.

Theoretical study of the effect of topographic height and width on generation of internal tides

Internal tides generated upon two-dimensional Gaussian topographies of different sizes and steepness are investigated theoretically in a numerical methodology.Compared with previous theoretical works,this model is not restricted by weak topography,but provides an opportunity to examine the influence of topography.Ten typical cases are studied using different values of height and/or width of topography.By analyzing the baroclinic velocity fields,as well as their first eight baroclinic modes,it is found that the magnitude of baroclinic velocity increases and the vertical structure becomes increasingly complex as height increases or width decreases.However,when both height and width vary,while parameter s(the ratio of the topographic slope to the characteristic slope of the internal wave ray) remains invariant,the final pattern is influenced primarily by width.The conversion rate is studied and the results indicate that width determines where the conversion rate reaches a peak,and where it is positive or negative,whereas height affects only the magnitude.High and narrow topography is considerably more beneficial to converting energy from barotropic to baroclinic fields than low and wide topography.Furthermore,parameter s,which is an important non-dimensional parameter for internal tide generation,is not the sole parameter by which the baroclinic velocity fields and conversion rate are determined.

Mooring observations of internal solitary waves in the deep basin west of Luzon Strait

A total of 137 internal solitary waves （ISWs） are captured during a field experiment conducted in the deep basin west of the Luzon Strait （LS） from March to August, 2010. Mooring observations reveal that a fully developed ISW owns a maximum westward velocity of more than 1.8 m/s and an amplitude of about 200 m. The ISWs in the South China Sea （SCS） are most active in July, which may be due to the strong stratification in summer. Most of the ISW episodes are detected around and after the 1st or 15th lunar day, indicating that the ISW in the SCS is triggered by astronomic tides. Half part of the observed ISWs were detected around 19：00 local time, which can be explained by the fact that type-a ISWs emerged in the evening at roughly the same time each day. The propagation direction of the ISWs and the astronomic tides in the LS show that the area south of the Batan Island is probably the main source region of the type-a ISWs, while the area south of Itbayat Island and south of the Batan Island is likely the main source region of the type-b ISWs observed at the mooring. Moreover, for the resonance of semidiurnal internal tides emitting from the double ridges in the LS, the underwater ridge south of the Itbayat Island and south of the Batan Island is believed to favor the generation of the energetic ISWs.

The simulation of an ocean general circulation model for the earth simulator （OFES） is transformed to an isopycnal coordinate to investigate the spatial structure and seasonal variability of the Mindanao Under- current （MUC）. The results show that （1） potential density surfaces, δ0=26.5 and δ0=27.5, can be chosen to encompass the M UC layer. Southern Pacilic tropical water （SPTW）, Antarctic Intermediate Water （AAIW） and high potential density water （HPDW） constitute the MUC. （2） Climatologically, the MOC exists in the form of dual-core. In some months, the dual-core structure changes to a single-core structure. （3） Choosing section at 8°N for calculating the transport of the MUC transport is reliable. Potential density constraint provides a good method for calculating the transport of the MOC. （4） The annual mean transport of the MUC is 8.34 × 106 m3/s and varies considerably with seasons： stronger in late spring and weaker in winter.
