To investigate oral health status in the residents of Sichuan Province, southwest China, a cross-sectional study was performed using the latest Oral Health Survey Basic Methods recommended by the World Health Organization. A multistage stratified random cluster-sampling method was used to enroll participants from the following three groups： children aged 3-5 years, adolescents aged 12 years, and people aged 65-74 years. In these three groups, the mean numbers of teeth that were affected by caries were 3.28, 0.86 and 5.13, respectively, resulting in a prevalence of 63.47%, 37.20% and 83.20%, respectively. Relative to the high rate of decayed teeth, the prevalence of fillings was very low in all age groups （0.97%, 7.24% and 5.43%, respectively）, In the 12-year-old adolescent group, only 3.61% had good pit and fissure sealing. In addition, the rate of dental fluorosis was 24.80%, and the Community Fluorosis Index value was 0.39. In the elder group, the community periodontal index was 2.92. The prevalence in the elderly of having lost at least one tooth was 75.54%. Additionally, 4.44% of these participants were edentulous. The incidence of dental prosthesis was 51.75%, the proportion with a removable partial denture, a fixed denture, full dentures, dental implants and an informal fixed bridge was 21.59%, 11.45%, 4.64%, 0 and 16.67%, respectively. In this study, 8.2% of the elderly participants were affected by different types of oral mucosal lesions. Among such lesions, recurrent aphthous ulcers were most prevalent （2.69%） and oral lichen planuses were second （1.6%）. The conclusion presented in this survey is that oral diseases, especially dental caries and periodontal disease, are frequent and common in Sichuan province, China. Moreover, the treatment rate is very low, and primary prevention and treatment options are therefore urgently needed in this population.

Molecular epidemiology of serotype 19A Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated from children in Beijing, 1997-2006

Background Despite the prevalence of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 19A, the molecular characteristics of this serotype are yet to be fully elucidated. The aim of this study was therefore to determine the homology of the serotype 19A in China. Methods Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and multilocus sequence typing were done to these forty-nine serotype 19A isolates to investigate the relationship between the strains prevalent in Beijing and other regions. Results From 1997 to 2006, the percentage of serotype 19A isolates increased. The susceptibility rate to penicillin and amoxicillin decreased and the resistance rate to cefuroxime increased. ST320 was the most prevalent ST, followed by ST3546. There were six new STs identified in our study. The serotype 19A strains were classified into six different pulsed-field gel electrophoresis （PFGE） patterns. ST320, which was associated with two different PFGE patterns （A and D）, accounted for 32 isolates, and ST3546, which was associated with two PFGE patterns （B and E）, accounted for eight isolates. Conclusions From 2003 onwards, ST320 was the most common ST and the rate of resistance to cefuroxime increased significantly. Further long-term surveys of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 19A are required to monitor ST prevalence and antimicrobial resistance, in this important human pathogen.

Background Coronary artery damage from Kawasaki disease （KD） is closely linked to the dysfunction of the endothelial progenitor cells （EPCs）.The aim of the present study was to evaluate the modulatory effect of granulocyte colony stimulating factor （G-CSF） on EPCs and elastin breakdown of coronary arteries in a KD mouse *** A Lactobacillus casei cell wall extract （LCWE）-induced KD model was established in C57BL/6 mice that were subsequently administrated with recombinant human G-CSF （rhG-CSF）.Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester （L-NAME） was administrated for the negative *** included coronary artery lesions,EPC number and functions,and the plasma concentration of nitric oxide （NO）.Results Elastin breakdown was found in the coronary arteries of model mice 56 days after injection of *** number of circulating EPCs,plasma concentration of NO,and functions of bone marrow EPCs,including proliferation,adhesion,and migration abilities,were all lower in the KD model group compared with those in the control *** administration of rhG-CSF,the number of circulating EPCs and plasma concentration of NO were increased significantly compared with those in the KD model *** were also increases in the functional indexes of ***,rhG-CSF administration improved the elastin breakdown ***,these protective effects of rhG-CSF on coronary arteries were attenuated by *** The present study indicated that the administration of G-CSF prevents elastin breakdown of the coronary arteries by enhancing the number and functions of EPCs via the NO system,and then accelerates the repair of coronary artery lesions in the KD.

AIM: To evaluate the accuracy, efficiency, and reliability of a handheld infrared eccentric autorefractor(h ICA) with artificial intelligence(AI) by comparing its refraction measurements to those recorded using h ICA and a clinical table-mounted automatic refractor(TAR).METHODS: A cross-sectional study using three optometers, including h ICA with or without AI and TAR, for refractometry of adults(aged 19-49 years old) with no signs of ocular disease or trauma in the absence of cycloplegia. Right and left eye refraction data were recorded, including the spherical equivalent(SE), diopter of spherical power(DS), diopter of cylindrical power(DC) decomposed into vectors J0 and J45, and measurement times. To avoid analytical difficulties associated with the interdependence of observations between eyes from the same individual, the Generalized Estimation Equation was used to compare the SE, DS, J0 and J45 measurements, and the times thereof, among the different groups. The intraclass correlation coef f icient(ICC) and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient were used to evaluate correlations among the measurements recorded by the three different instruments. Bland-Altman were used to analyze the precision of the equipment by the agreement. RESULTS: A total of 70 patients(140 eyes;mean age: 31.37 y;range: 19-49 y) were assessed using refractometry. In a brightly lit environment, there was no significant difference between the mean SE recorded using TAR and that recorded using h ICA with AI or without AI(both P>0.05). In an intense-light environment, h ICA equipped with AI showed a better detection rate than without AI. Light intensity had a greater effect on dioptric measurements recorded using h ICA without AI(P<0.001) than on those recorded using the one equipped with AI(P<0.05). In pregnancy,the maternal immune system(including innate and adaptive immunity)makes elaborate adjustments to endure the embryo’s expression of paternal antigens and to protect the embryo from attacks by invading pathogens such as bacteria or viruses.1 As the predominant innate immune cells during gestation,natural killer(NK)cells have been proven to mediate the establishment of maternal-fetal immune tolerance and to initiate appropriate defenses against infections.2 Tim-3,a member of the T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin domain proteins,has emerged as a key molecule in both innate and adaptive responses and represents a promising novel therapeutic target.

Despite the use of many types of chemotherapies for pancreatic cancer, optimal efficacy has not been obtained so far. Pancreatic cancer shows a high incidence of TP53 mutations, inactivating its tumor suppressor activity. In this study, we identified sodium cantharidinate as a novel, potential anti-pancreatic cancer agent that activates p53 function. Sodium cantharidinate reduced the viability of pancreatic cancer cells, including the human primary pancreatic cancer cells, PANC-1, As PC-1, SW1990 and BXPC-3, in a dose-dependent manner. Sodium cantharidinate induced apoptosis and DNA damage of pancreatic cancer cells. Furthermore, proteome-wide sequencing analysis detected a marked perturbation in p53 signaling pathway on PANC-1 cells upon sodium cantharidinate. Consistent with the previous results, sodium cantharidinate treatment decreased Bcl-2 and mitochondrial cytochrome-c protein expression, as well as phosphorylation of MDM2;meanwhile, it increased the levels of cleaved-caspase-3,cleaved-caspase-9, cleaved-PARP, Bax, and phosphorylated p53, thus inducing the apoptosis of pancreatic cancer cells. The p53-activating effect of sodium cantharidinate was strongly abrogated by treatment with TP53-targeting sh RNA. Moreover, sodium cantharidinate inhibited neoplasm growth via the JAK2-STAT3 pathway, which was inhibited by sh RNA-TP53 and triggered by combination with gemcitabine. Combination therapy indicated that sodium cantharidinate and gemcitabine synergistically reduced ex vivo and in vivo growth of pancreatic neoplasm. Further docking studies revealed the different binding fates of sodium cantharidinate to activate wild-type p53 function. Thus, sodium cantharidinate could be a potential agent with promising anti-pancreatic cancer efficacy.
