Sedimentary characteristics comparison and genesis analysis of the deepwater channel in the hydrate enrichment zones on the north slope of the South China sea

Natural gas hydrate(NGH) is one of the important clean energy at present and even in the future. The study of its sedimentary environment and minerogenetic condition has long been a hot issue that has received much concern from geologists all over the world. China has successfully obtained the samples of NGH in Shenhu and Dongsha sea areas in 2007, 2013 and 2015, respectively. From this, the continental slope north of the South China sea becomes an important test site for the study of NGH sedimentary genesis and minerogenetic condition. NGH has been found in Shenhu, Dongsha and Qiongdongnan areas within the continental slope north of South China sea,at different depths of water, with different sedimentary characteristics, gas genesis, and minerogenetic *** a seismic sedimentology theory, combining seismic facies results of each facies, sedimentary facies and evolution of each area are documented in turn establishing a sedimentary model by considering palaeogeomorphology, sea level change and tectonic movement. The channel system and MTD(Mass Transport Deposition) system among these three areas were compared focusing on the developing position, appearance and controlling factors. Relative location among three areas is firstly defined that Dongsha area in a nearprovenance steep upper slope, Shenhu area in a normal gentle slope and Qiongdongnan area in an awayprovenance flat plain. Besides, their channel systems are classified into erosional, erosional-aggradational and aggradational channel, and MTD systems into headwall domain, translational domain and toe domain.

The Shan 2 Member, Shan 1 Member and He 8 Member of the Mid-Late Permian Shanxi and lower Xiashihezi formations, in the southeastern Ordos Basin, together comprise -150 m of deltaic deposits. This sequence records an overall evolution from deep marine environment to shallow lake associated with braided river, braided river delta and meandering river delta. Core description, well log interpretation, and stable isotope analysis, including carbon, oxygen and strontium, were conducted to understand the sedimentary evolution of Shan 2 to He 8 Member. The Shanxi Formation, which consists of the Shan 2 and Shan 1 members, is characterized by a tidal-influenced meandering river delta environment and a higher j13C value and S7Sr/S6Sr ratio and a lower jlSo value. The He 8 Member, the basal part of the Xiashihezi Formation, is featured by a braided river to braided river delta system and a lower j13C value, S7Sr/S6Sr ratio, and a higher jlSo value. Four third-order depositional sequences separated by five sequence boundaries are determined. Coarsening upward sequences of the Shan 2 Member-He 8 Member indicate a general regression trend, which can be correlated to global sea-level fall occurring during the Roadian-Wuchiapingian, as also evidenced by previous published zircon U-Pb results. The coal-bearing sequence （Shanxi Formation） to non-coal-bearing sequence （He 8 Member）, as well as a decrease of 87Sr/86Sr, suggest a trend from humid to arid climates. A combined effect of sea-level drop and a small uplift at the end of Shanxi Formation are proposed.

Owing to the large and increasing population density in low-lying coastal regions, even small changes in sea level can have substantial societal and economic impacts. Alternations of terrestrial and marine sediments deposited in coastal areas or continental shelves are important and effective indicators of sealevel changes, and thus, have been widely studied in the marginal seas of China over the past 30 ***, sea-level change results from not only eustatic factors but also tectonic activity. The Zhe-Min(or Zhejiang e Fujian) Uplift(ZMU) was such an important factor in geomorphology, and formed a barrier preventing entry of sea water into the northern marginal seas of China, but its Quaternary history is poorly *** this study, a new borehole(ECS-DZ1) was drilled in the Zhoushan Islands, northern East China sea to obtain information on the evolution of the ZMU during the Quaternary. Information from paleomagnetic and luminescence dating was combined with data on sedimentary changes. The main results are:(1) constrained by luminescence ages, the upper sedimentary units were extrapolated to have been deposited since .2 Ma;(2) paleomagnetic results suggest that the ECS-DZ1 borehole sequence spans from the pre-Olduvai Matuyama reverse chron to the Brunhes normal chron, approximately constraining the age of the basal sedimentary unit to .0 Ma;(3) a signi ficant hiatus or erosion between two major sedimentary units possibly occurred between the late Early Pleistocene and Middle *** the Zhoushan Islands are within the ZMU and considering previous transgression studies around this region, it is inferred that the ZMU subsided at .0 Ma, allowing sea water to invade northward in the Yellow sea basin. The ZMU might have been uplifted again no later than 1.0 Ma, causing a sedimentary hiatus or lacustrine development. The history of the Hawaiian hotspot is of enduring interest in studies of plate motion and mantle flow,and has been investigated by many researchers using the detailed history of the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount *** of the unexplained aspects of this history is the apparent offset of several Emperor seamounts from the Hawaii plume *** we show that the volcanic migration rates of the Emperor seamounts based on existing data are inconsistent with the drifting rate of the Pacific plate,and indicate northward and then southward “absolute movements”of the *** modeling suggests that attraction and capture of the upper part of the plume by a moving spreading ridge led to variation in the location of the plume’s magmatic output at the *** of the plume material towards the ridge led to apparent southward movement of ***,the upper part of the plume was carried northward until 65 Ma *** the ridge and the plume became sufficiently separated,magmatic output moved back to be centered over the plume *** changes are apparent in variations in the volume of seamounts along the plume *** and isotopic compositions of basalt from the Emperor seamount chain changed from depleted(strong mid-ocean ridge affinity)in Meiji and Detroit to enriched(ocean island type),supporting declining influence from the *** its surface expression was modified by mantle flow and by plume-ridge interactions,the stem of the Hawaiian plume may have been essentially stationary during the Emperor period.

Changes in diffuse reflectance spectroscopy properties of hematite in sediments from the North Pacific Ocean and implications for eolian dust evolution history

Eolian dust preserved in deep-sea sediments of the North Pacific Ocean(NPO) is an important recorder of paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental changes in the Asian inland. To better understand changes in the dust provenances, in this study diffuse reflectance spectroscopy(DRS) was used to extract the eolian signal recorded in sediments of ODP Hole 885 A recovered from the NPO. First, we systematically investigated sieving effects on the DRS data; then band positions of hematite(obtained from the second order derivative curves of the K-M remission function spectrum derived from the DRS) were used to distinguish different provenances of the eolian dust preserved in the pelagic sediments of this hole. Our results show that the sieving(38 μm) process can suppress effectively the experimental errors. Eolian signatures from Chinese Loess Plateau(CLP) sources and non-CLP-sources have been identified in the pelagic sediments of ODP Hole 885 A from the late Pliocene to the early Pleistocene. The provenance differences account for the discrepancies in the eolian records recovered from the pelagic sediments in the NPO and profiles in the CLP. Temporal changes in dust provenances are caused by the latitudinal movement of the westerly jet mainstream. The hematite DRS band position is a useful tool to distinguish the provenance of eolian components preserved in pelagic sediments.

Testing optically stimulated luminescence dating on sand-sized quartz of deltaic deposits from the Sperchios delta plain, central Greece

This study reports on the first investigation into the potential of luminescence dating to establish a chronological framework for the depositional sequences of the Sperchios delta plain, central Greece. A series of three borehole cores(20 m deep) and two shallow cores(4 m deep), from across the delta plain, were extracted, and samples were collected for luminescence dating. The luminescence ages of sand-sized quartz grains were obtained from small aliquots of quartz, using the Single-Aliquot Regenerative-dose(SAR) *** equivalent dose determination included a series of tests and the selection of the Minimum Age Model(MAM) as the most appropriate statistical model. This made it possible to confirm the applicability of quartz Optically Stimulated Luminescence(OSL) dating to establish absolute chronology for deltaic sediments from the Sperchios delta *** age results of the five cores showed that the deltaic sediments were deposited during the Holocene.A relatively rapid deposition is implied for the top14 m possibly as a result of the deceleration in the rate of the sea-level rise and the transition to terrestrial conditions, while on the deeper parts, the reduced sedimentation rate may indicate a lagoonal or coastal environment.

Magnetostratigraphy of borehole EY02-2 in the southern Yellow sea and its paleoenvironmental significance

Detailed rock magnetic and paleomag- netic studies have been undertaken on borehole EY02-2 (70m in length) in the southern Yellow sea (SYS). The main Curie point revealed by magnetic susceptibility-temperature (k-T) curve is 580―600℃ indicating magnetite dominance. The hysteresis loop parameters show large variation of magnetic minera size in different sedimentary contexts: it is larger in subtidal sediment than in terrigenous sediment and even larger than in shallow sea sediment. This trend is correlative with distance to sediment source and dynamic strength. Magnetostratigraphic results show that the M/B polarity boundary (MBPB) is at 63.29m and there are at least 7 polarity transitions (Nr1-7) in Brunhes chron that can be tentatively correlated with 6 named polarity reversals. Three positive polarity reversals occur in late Matuyama chron and the early two may be the record of Kamikatsura happening in 886±3 kaB.P. Magnetic susceptibility (MS) and sediment grain size behave so differently in some sedimentary facies that certain big environmenta changes can be clearly revealed. Generally, the MS and grain size of subtidal and terrigenous sediments are larger than shallow sea sediments and MS value around 10×10?5SI and mean grain size of 7Φ seems to be indicators of shallow sea sediments of deep water depth. However, the frequently used excellen climatic proxies such as MS and grain size in loess and deep sea sediments fail to record such climatic cycles revealed by oxygen isotope in continental seaThe various sediment sources, sedimentation dy- namic and their complex changes between glacial and interglacial periods should be the cause of fail- ure.

Evaluation of the Crustal Features of the Gulf of Aqaba Deduced from Geophysical Data

The Gulf of Aqaba is considered as an interesting rift system. Therefore, it is important to understand the crustal features and thickness variation along the Gulf;to be able to evaluate the effect of tectonic activities in shaping the Gulf. The obtained data were used to estimate the reliable empirical relations between the Bouguer anomalies (ΔgB) and crustal thickness (Hc) in the Gulf of Aqaba. This equation was used to calculate the depth reliefs to the Moho boundary. The output map of the Moho relief and the corresponding crustal thickness were constructed for the Gulf of Aqaba. The depth from sea level down to the Moho discontinuity in the Gulf of Aqaba varies between about 37 km in the northern deep and abruptly changes to about 28 km at the southern area, Tiran Strait. Below the central part of the gulf, a Moho depth of about 34 km is obtained. The Red sea crust is thinner than that of the Dead sea rift;indicating the presence of a mantel upwelling that is related to the spreading of the sea floor. The asymmetry of crustal thickness between the eastern and western borders of the Gulf of Aqaba could be attributed to simultaneous strike-slip motion. The relative displacement between the two borders is observed clearly through the sea floor and Moho discontinuity. The displacement is nearly equivalent to 0.18° (i.e. about 20.4 km) and is assumed to be achieved in about 4.08 to 3.4 million years, according to the estimated rate of the transform motion along the Gulf of Aqaba (Dead sea transform) that is about 0.5 to 0.6 cm/y.

Eddy analysis in the Eastern China sea using altimetry data

Statistical characteristics of mesoscale eddies in the Eastern China sea （ECS） are analyzed using altimetry sea surface height anomaly （SSHA） data from 1993 to 2010. A velocity geometry-based automated eddy detection scheme is employed to detect eddies from the SSHA data to generate an eddy data set. About 1,096 eddies （one lifetime of eddies is counted as one eddy） with a lifetime longer than or equal to 4 weeks are identified in this region. The average lifetime and radius of eddies are 7 weeks and 55 km, respectively, and there is no significant difference between cyclonic eddies （CEs） and anticyclonic eddies （AEs） in this respect. Eddies＇ lifetimes are generally longer in deep water than in shallow water. Most eddies propagate northeastward along the Kuroshio （advected by the Kuroshio）, with more CEs generated on its western side and AEs on its eastern side. The variation of the Kuroshio transport is one of the major mechanisms for eddy genesis, however the generation of AEs on the eastern side of the Kuroshio （to the open ocean） is also subject to other factors, such as the wind stress curl due to the presence of the Ryukyu Islands and the disturbance from the open ocean.
