Non-negative matrix factorization based unmixing for principal component transformed hyperspectral data

Non-negative matrix factorization(NMF) has been widely used in mixture analysis for hyperspectral remote sensing. When used for spectral unmixing analysis, however, it has two main shortcomings:(1) since the dimensionality of hyperspectral data is usually very large, NMF tends to suffer from large computational complexity for the popular multiplicative iteration rule;(2) NMF is sensitive to noise(outliers), and thus the corrupted data will make the results of NMF meaningless. Although principal component analysis(PCA) can be used to mitigate these two problems, the transformed data will contain negative numbers, hindering the direct use of the multiplicative iteration rule of NMF. In this paper, we analyze the impact of PCA on NMF, and find that multiplicative NMF can also be applicable to data after principal component transformation. Based on this conclusion, we present a method to perform NMF in the principal component space, named ‘principal component NMF'(PCNMF). Experimental results show that PCNMF is both accurate and time-saving.

Phase diagrams of permanent magnet alloys: Binary rare earth alloy systems

Thermodynamic optimization of the binary rare earth alloy(Cee La, Cee Pr, Cee Nd and Lae Nd) systems was performed in this work through the CALPHAD method based on the critical evaluation of all available phase diagram and thermodynamic data reported in the literature. During the thermodynamic modeling, the solution phases including liquid, bcc, fcc and dhcp, were treated as the substitutional solution model. Thermodynamic parameters of the stable phases in the Cee La, Cee Pr, Cee Nd and Lae Nd binary systems are obtained finally and would be used directly to develop the thermodynamic database of the multi-component Nde Fee B-based alloys, which is indispensable for designing alloy compositions and processes of Nde Fee B permanent magnets with highly abundant rare earth metals.

Variable and Robust East Asian Monsoon Rainfall Response to El Nio over the Past 60 Years(1957–2016)

Severe flooding occurred in southern and northern China during the summer of 2016 when the 2015 super El Nio decayed to a normal condition. However, the mean precipitation during summer（June–July-August） 2016 does not show significant anomalies, suggesting that — over East Asia（EA） — seasonal mean anomalies have limited value in representing hydrological hazards. Scrutinizing season-evolving precipitation anomalies associated with 16 El Nio episodes during 1957–2016 reveals that, over EA, the spatiotemporal patterns among the four categories of El Nio events are quite variable, due to a large range of variability in the intensity and evolution of El Nio events and remarkable subseasonal migration of the rainfall anomalies. The only robust seasonal signal is the dry anomalies over central North China during the El Nio developing summer. Distinguishing strong and weak El Nio impacts is important. Only strong El Nio events can persistently enhance EA subtropical frontal precipitation from the peak season of El Nio to the ensuing summer, by stimulating intense interaction between the anomalous western Pacific anticyclone（WPAC） and underlying dipolar sea surface temperature anomalies in the Indo-Pacific warm pool, thereby maintaining the WPAC and leading to a prolonged El Nio impact on EA. A weak El Nio may also enhance the post-El Nio summer rainfall over EA, but through a different physical process： the WPAC re-emerges as a forced response to the rapid cooling in the eastern Pacific. The results suggest that the skillful prediction of rainfall over continental EA requires the accurate prediction of not only the strength and evolution of El Nio, but also the subseasonal migration of EA rainfall anomalies.

Numerical simulation based on two-directional freeze and thaw algorithm for thermal diffusion model

Freeze-thaw processes significantly modulate hydraulic and thermal char- acteristics of soil. The changes in the frost and thaw fronts （FTFs） affect the water and energy cycles between the land surface and the atmosphere. Thus, the frozen soil com- prising permafrost and seasonally frozen soil has important effects on the land surface hydrology in cold regions. In this study, a two-directional freeze and thaw algorithm is incorporated into a thermal diffusion equation for simulating FTFs. A local adaptive variable-grid method is used to discretize the model. Sensitivity tests demonstrate that the method is stable and FTFs can be tracked continuously. The FTFs and soil tempera- ture at the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau D66 site are simulated hourly from September 1, 1997 to September 22, 1998. The results show that the incorporated model performs much better in the soil temperature simulation than the original thermal diffusion equation, showing potential applications of the method in land-surface process modeling.

Simulation of Salinity Variability and the Related Freshwater Flux Forcing in the Tropical Pacific: An Evaluation Using the Beijing Normal University Earth System Model(BNU-ESM)

The climatology and interannual variability of sea surface salinity （SSS） and freshwater flux （FWF） in the equatorial Pacific are analyzed and evaluated using simulations from the Beijing Normal University Earth System Model （BNU-ESM）. The simulated annual climatology and interannual variations of SSS, FWF, mixed layer depth （MLD）, and buoyancy flux agree with those observed in the equatorial Pacific. The relationships among the interannual anomaly fields simulated by BNU-ESM are analyzed to illustrate the climate feedbacks induced by FWF in the tropical Pacific. The largest interannual variations of SSS and FWF are located in the western-central equatorial Pacific. A positive FWF feedback effect on sea surface temperature （SST） in the equatorial Pacific is identified. As a response to El Nino-Southern Oscillation （ENSO）, the interannual variation of FWF induces ocean processes which, in turn, enhance ENSO. During El Nino, a positive FWF anomaly in the western-central Pacific （an indication of increased precipitation rates） acts to enhance a negative salinity anomaly and a negative surface ocean density anomaly, leading to stable stratification in the upper ocean. Hence, the vertical mixing and entrainment of subsurface water into the mixed layer are reduced, and the associated E1 Nino is enhanced. Related to this positive feedback, the simulated FWF bias is clearly reflected in SSS and SST simulations, with a positive FWF perturbation into the ocean corresponding to a low SSS and a small surface ocean density in the western-central equatorial Pacific warm pool.

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy for the classification of wood materials using machine learning methods combined with feature selection

In this paper,we explore whether a feature selection method can improve model performance by using some classical machine learning models,artificial neural network,k-nearest neighbor,partial least squares-discrimination analysis,random forest,and support vector machine(SVM),combined with the feature selection methods,distance correlation coefficient(DCC),important weight of linear discriminant analysis(IW-LDA),and Relief-F algorithms,to discriminate eight species of wood(African rosewood,Brazilian bubinga,elm,larch,Myanmar padauk,Pterocarpus erinaceus,poplar,and sycamore)based on the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS)*** spectral data are normalized by the maximum of line intensity and principal component analysis is applied to the exploratory data *** feature spectral lines are selected out based on the important weight assessed by DCC,IW-LDA,and *** models are built by using the different number of feature lines(sorted by their important weight)as *** relationship between the number of feature lines and the correct classification rate(CCR)of the model is *** CCRs of all models are improved by using a suitable feature *** highest CCR achieves(98.55...0.39)%when the SVM model is established from 86 feature lines selected by the IW-LDA *** result demonstrates that a suitable feature selection method can improve model recognition ability and reduce modeling time in the application of wood materials classification using LIBS.

Regional-scale Surface Air Temperature and East Asian Summer Monsoon Changes during the Last Millennium Simulated by the FGOALS-gl Climate System Model

The spatial patterns and regional-scale surface air temperature （SAT） changes during the last millennium,as well as the variability of the East Asian summer monsoon （EASM） were simulated with a low-resolution version of Flexible Global Ocean-Atmosphere-Land-Sea-ice （FGOALS-gl） *** model was driven by both natural and anthropogenic forcing *** features of the simulated past millennial Northern Hemisphere （NH） mean SAT variations,including the Medieval Climate Anomaly （MCA）,the Little Ice Age （LIA） and the 20th Century Warming （20CW）,were generally consistent with the *** simulated MCA showed a global cooling pattern with reference to the 1961-90 mean conditions,indicating the 20CW to be unprecedented over the last millennium in the *** LIA was characterized by pronounced coldness over the continental extratropical NH in both the reconstruction and the *** simulated global mean SAT difference between the MCA and LIA was 0.14°C,with enhanced warming over high-latitude NH continental *** between the simulation and the reconstruction on regional scales were lower than those on hemispheric *** major features agreed well between the simulated and reconstructed SAT variations over the Chinese domain,despite some inconsistency in details among different *** EASM circulation during the MCA was stronger than that during the LIA The corresponding rainfall anomalies exhibited excessive rainfall in the north but deficient rainfall in the *** the zonal and meridional thermal contrast were enhanced during the *** temperature anomaly pattern favored a stronger monsoon circulation.

Mixed-Level modeling Methodology for Network-on-Chip Architecture Exploration

As Network on chip(NoC) architecture develops as an solution of interconnection in System on chip(SoC) designs, a detailed and flexible interconnection network model integrated in a full system evaluation framework becomes necessary. In this paper, we first present a mixed abstraction level modeling methodology for the performance evaluation of NoC architecture. Then based on our mixed level modeling methodology, we develop a full system mixed-level NoC evaluation and verification platform. Aiming to explore the details of the performance evaluation and hardware verification of interconnection part, we build NoC router at cycle-accurate, bus cycle level and build SoC peripherals at approximately time, bus phase transaction level which intend to gain higher simulation speed, and lower step to relative development of software. The experimental results show that the mixedlevel NoC evaluation platform can achieve both detailed architecture exploration and fast simulation speed.
