We provide a concise review of the main epidemiological literature on fatty liver(FL) published between January 2011 and October 2013. The findings from the literature will be considered in light of the already available knowledge. We discuss the limitations inherent in the categorization of FL into non-alcoholic and alcoholic FL, the potential relevance of FL as an independent predictor of cardiometabolic disease, and recent research addressing the role of FL as an independent predictor of mortality. This review is organized as a series of answers to relevant questions about the epidemiology of FL.

Objective:To evaluate the effects of ethanol–water(80:20) extract of Marrubium vulgare(***) on the hematological parameters,macroscopic and histological aspects of the uterus and fetus in non-pregnant and pregnant ***:Female rats were divided into 4 equal groups(n = 9),group N(normal rats) and group G(pregnant rats) considered as control groups,group NE(normal rats treated with the ethanol–water(80:20,v/v) extract of ***) and group GE(pregnant rats treated with the extract).The ethanol–water(80:20) plant extract was administered in a single daily dose 1 g/kg at the morning,during 19 *** the 19 day of the experiment,animals were sacrificed,the uterus and fetuses were removed for the morphological and histological studies and the blood was collected in EDTA tubes for the measurement of hematological parameters with the use of an automate ‘HORIBA ABX Micros 60 Hematology Analyzer'.Results:Our results showed,in group NE and GE,a significant decrease on hematological parameters:red blood cells(NE:18.6%;GE:38.4%),hematocrit(NE:13.8%;GE:20.4%),hemoglobin(NE:12.1%;GE:8.3%) and mean corpuscular volume(NE:6.4%;GE:2%) with P more less a ***,the extract of *** caused a significant decrease on the mean implantations of fetuses(82.5%,P<0.001) and their size(47.2%,P< 0.01).As for the macroscopic and histological appearance of uterus,our data showed no change in normal treated *** contrast,the treated pregnant rats showed a severe histological change characterized by the existence of location of stopped ***,it was also found in the uterus of these rat lyses placental and embryo ***:All these results support the hypothesis of an abortifacient effect of ***.

The coronary artery calcification score and pericardial fat volume have recently been reported to be strongly associated with the severity and presence of coronary atherosclerosis. However, no studies have explored the outcome of phased progression of atherosclerosis by non-contrast computed tomography in asymptomatic people in China. The population-based cohort study in outcome of phased progression of atherosclerosis in China （PERSUADE）, an observational, longitudinal and prospective cohort study in a target population of healthy sub- jects based in Jidong Oilfield （China）, prospectively analyzes the outcome of phased progression of atherosclerosis by non-contrast computed tomography in healthy population. The results of this study are expected to be of value for utilizing noninvasive imaging combine with tradi- tional cardiovascular risk factors to create a risk stratification and find pertinent biomarkers associated with the outcome of phased progres- sion of atherosclerosis in healthy people, thereby could help to establish a more personalized treatment of clinical practice.

Precision medicine emerges as a new approach that takes into account individual variability. Successful realization of precision medicine requires disease models that are able to incorporate personalized dis- ease information and recapitulate disease development processes at the molecular, cellular and organ levels. With recent development in stem cell field, a variety of tissue organoids can be derived from patient specific pluripotent stem cells and adult stem cells. In combi- nation with the state-of-the-art genome editing tools, organoids can be further engineered to mimic disease- relevant genetic and epigenetic status of a patient. This has therefore enabled a rapid expansion of sophisticated in vitro disease models, offering a unique system for fundamental and biomedical research as well as the development of personalized medicine. Here we summarize some of the latest advances and future perspectives in engineering stem cell organoids for human disease modeling.

AIM:To conduct a meta-analysis evaluating theassociation between the peripheral blood neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio(NLR) and the outcome of patients with pancreatic ***:Studies evaluating the relationship between the peripheral blood NLR and outcome of patients with pancreatic cancer published up to May 2014 were searched using electronic databases, including Pub Med, Web of Science, Embase and Ovid.A meta-analysis was performed to pool the hazard ratios(HRs) or odds ratios(ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals(CIs) using either a fixed-effects model or a random-effects model to quantitatively assess the prognostic value of NLR and its association with clinicopathological ***:Eleven studies containing a total of 1804 patients were eligible according to our selection criteria, and combined hazard ratios indicated that high NLR was a poor prognostic marker for pancreatic cancer patients because it had an unfavorable impact on the overall survival(OS)(HR =2.61, 95%CI:1.68-4.06, P =0.000) and cancer specific survival(HR =1.66, 95%CI:1.08-2.57, P =0.021).Subgroup analysis revealed that high NLR was associated with poor OS in patients with mixed treatment(HR =4.36, 95%CI:2.50-7.61, P =0.000), chemotherapy(HR =2.08, 95%CI:1.49-2.9, P =0.000), or surgical resection(HR =1.2, 95%CI:1.00-1.44, P =0.048).Additionally, high NLR was significantly correlated with tumor metastasis(OR =1.69, 95%CI:1.10-2.59, P =0.016), poor tumor differentiation(OR =2.75, 95%CI:1.19-6.36, P =0.016), poor performance status(OR =2.56, 95%CI:1.63-4.03, P =0.000), high cancer antigen 199(OR =2.62, 95%CI:1.49-4.60, P =0.000), high C-reactive protein(OR =4.32, 95%CI:2.71-6.87, P =0.000), and low albumin(OR =3.56, 95%CI:1.37-9.27, P =0.009).CONCLUSION:High peripheral blood NLR suggested a poor prognosis for patients with pancreatic cancer,and it could be a novel marker of survival evaluation and could help clinicians develop therapeutic strategies for pancreatic cancer patients

Isolation and characterization of dengue virus serotype 2 from the large dengue outbreak in Guangdong, China in 2014

Depression is a high-risk factor for progressing from prediabetes to diabetes. The presence of serum vitamin D is closely linked to depression. Thus, this study aimed to explore the relationship between serum vitamin D concentration and depression in adults with prediabetes. Methods This cross-sectional study included 5,019 adults with prediabetes in Tianjin, China. Self-Rating Depression Scale was used to evaluate the degree of depression. Serum 25(OH)D concentration was measured by enzyme-immunoassay and divided into three categories: level 1 75 nmol/L. Prediabetes was diagnosed according to the American Diabetes Association criteria. The correlation between serum vitamin D concentration and depression was evaluated by multiple logistic regression analysis. Results The incidence rate of depression in individuals with prediabetes was 14.7%(12.9% in males and 17.1% in females). After adjustments for potential confounding factors including age, body mass index, physical activity, total energy intake, metabolic syndromes, smoking status, drinking status, educational levels, employment status, household income, marital status, living alone, visiting friends, and three major dietary patterns, the odds ratios(95% confidence intervals) of depression among categories of serum 25(OH)D were 1.00(reference), 1.07(0.82, 1.38) and 0.97(0.63, 1.45) in males;1.00(reference), 0.96(0.71, 1.28) and 0.42(0.21, 0.77) in females. Conclusion This study demonstrated that serum 25(OH)D concentration was inversely correlated with depression in females with prediabetes, independent of confounding factors.

Dengue has been well recognized as a global public health threat,but only sporadic epidemics and imported cases were reported in recent decades in *** July 2014,an unexpected large dengue outbreak has occurred in Guangdong province,China,resulting in more than 40000 patients including six *** clarify and characterize the causative agent of this outbreak,the acute phase serum from a patient diagnosed with severe dengue was subjected to virus isolation and high-throughput sequencing(HTS).Traditional real-time RT-PCR and HTS with Ion Torrent PGM detected the presence of dengue virus serotype 2(DENV-2).A clinical DENV-2 isolate GZ05/2014 was obtained by culturing the patient serum in mosquito C6/36 *** complete genome of GZ05/2014 was determined and deposited in Gen Bank under the access number *** analysis based on the complete envelope gene showed that the newly DENV-2 isolate belonged to Cosmopolitan genotype and clustered closely with other Guangdong strains isolated in the past *** amino acid mutations that are obviously known to increase virulence or replication were identified throughout the genome of GZ05/*** high homology of Guangdong DENV-2 strains indicated the possibility of establishment of local DENV-2 circulation in Guangdong,*** results help clarify the origin of this epidemic and predict the future status of dengue in China.

AIM:To study the relation between hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 4 and microalbuminuria and renal impairment in relation to hepatic histology, and viremia in the absence of cryoglobulinemia, and to examine the effect of treatment on ***: Three hundred subjects, including 233 HCV genotype-4 infected patients, were tested for cryoglobulinemia, microalbuminuria, albumin creatinine ratio (ACR), urea, creatinine, and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). The parameters were measured again in the HCV patients after 48 wk of treatment with pegylated interferon and ***: Significantly higher levels of microalbumin- uria were detected in HCV-positive patients compared to HCV-negative controls (median 9.5 vs 5.9, respectively, Kruskal-Wallis P=0.017). Log microalbuminuria was significantly correlated with hepatic inflammation (r=0.13, P=0.036) and f ibrosis (r=0.12, P=0.061), but not with viral load (r=-0.03, P=0.610), or alanine transaminase (r=-0.03, P=0.617). Diabetes mellitus neither significantly moderated (χ2=0.13, P=0.720), nor mediated (Sobel test P=0.49) the HCV effect. HCV status was signifi cantly associated with log microalbu-minuria (χ2=4.97, P=0.026), adjusting for age, gender, diabetes, cryoglobulinemia, urea and creatinine. A positive HCV status was not significantly associated with low eGFR (<60 mL/min every 1.73 m2) [odds ratio (OR): 0.5, 95% confidence interval (CI):0.2-1.4], nor with high ACR (OR: 1.7, 95% CI:0.7-4.1). End-of-treatment response (ETR) was achieved in 51.9% of patients. Individuals with ETR had significantly lower microalbuminuria post-treatment (χ2=8.19, P=0.004).CONCLUSION: HCV affected the development of microalbuminuria independent of diabetes or cryoglobulinemia. Combination therapy of pegylated interferon-ribavirin had a positive effect in reducing microalbuminuria.
