The effects of climate warming on microbe-mediated mechanisms of sediment carbon emission

Due to significant differences in biotic and abiotic properties of soils compared to those of sediments,the predicted underlying microbe-mediated mechanisms of soil carbon emissions in response to warming may not be applicable for estimating similar emissions from inlandwater *** addressed this issue by incubating different types of sediments,(including lake,small river,and pond sediments)collected from 36 sites across the Yangtze River basin,under short-term experimentalwarming to explore the effects of climatewarming on sediment carbon emission and the underlying microbe-mediated *** results indicated that under climate warming Cc emissions were affected more than CH_(4) emissions,and that pond sediments may yield a greater relative contribution of CO_(2) to total carbon emissions than lake and river ***-induced CO_(2) and CH_(4) increases involve different microbe-mediated mechanisms;Warming-induced sediment CO_(2) emissions were predicted to be directly positively driven by microbial community network modularity,which was significantly negatively affected by the quality and quantity of organic carbon and warming-induced variations in dissolved oxygen,Conversely,warminginduced sediment CH_(4) emissionswere predicted to be directly positively driven bymicrobial community network complexity,which was significantly negatively affected by warminginduced variations in *** findings suggest that biotic and abiotic drivers for sediment CO_(2) and CH_(4) emissions in response to climate warming should be considered separately when predicting sediment organic carbon decomposition dynamics resulting from climate change.

Atmospheric HONO formation during and after the Spring Festival holidays in a coastal city of China

Nitrous acid(HONO)is an important source of hydrogen oxides(HOx),which affects air quality,the atmospheric oxidation capacity,and human ***,we present ambient measurements of the HONO concentrations in Zhuhai,a coastal city in Southern China,from February 7 to March 15,*** campaign was classified into two periods during(P1)and after(P2)the Spring Festival *** average HONO mixing ratio during P2(1.19±0.85 ppbv)was much higher than that during P1(0.24±0.18 ppbv),likely due to the contribution of homogeneous HONO *** nighttime,the heterogeneous conversion rate during P2(0.0089/hr)was considerably higher than that during P1(0.0057/hr),suggesting a higher heterogeneous NO_(2) conversion ***,the heterogeneous NO_(2) conversion was the dominant way during P1 with a high percentage of 88%,while comparable ratios of heterogeneous and homogeneous formation were found(54%vs.46%)during P2,indicating that the homogeneous formation was also important during *** daytime,homogeneous reaction was the major known pathway,with a contribution of 16%during P1 and 27%during P2,leaving large unknown HONO sources which reasonably correlated with the photo-enhanced NO_(2) *** case scenarios were additionally explored,showing that there might be a primary emission source during one scenario(February 17-18)and vehicle emissions might be the major unknown HONO source for another scenario(March 3–5).The results suggest that large unknown daytime sources still exist which need more future ambient and laboratory studies.

Characterization, treatment and releases of PBDEs and PAHs in a typical municipal sewage treatment plant situated beside an urban river, East China

Characterization, treatment and releases of eight polybrominated diphenyl ethers （PBDEs） congeners and sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） in wastewater were evaluated along the treatment processes of a typical secondary treatment municipal sewage treatment plant （STP）（in Hefei City） situated the beside Nanfei River, East China. The findings showed that the average concentrations of the total PBDEs in raw wastewater and treated effluent were 188.578 and 36.884 ng/L respectively. Brominated diphenyl ether （BDE） 209 congener, the predominant PBDE in the STP and Nanfei River, could be related to the discharge of car-industry-derived wastes. For PAHs, the average concentrations in raw wastewater and treated effluent were 5758.8 and 2240.4 ng/L respectively, with naphthalene, benzo[a]pyrene and indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene being detected at the highest concentrations. PAHs mainly originate from the combustion of biomass/coal and petroleum. The STP reduced about 80% of the PBDEs and 61% of the PAHs, which were eliminated mainly by sedimentation processes. The removal rates of PBDEs/PAHs increased with the increase of their solid-water partitioning coefficients. Accordingly, the STP＇s effluent, containing some PBDE congeners （e.g., BDE 47, 99 and 209, etc.） and low-molecular-weight PAHs, could be an important contributor of these contaminants＇ input to Nanfei River. It resulted in a significant increase of PBDE/PAH concentrations and PAH toxicological risk in the river water downstream. About 4.040 kg/yr of PBDEs and 245.324 kg/yr of PAHs could be released into the Nanfei River. The current conventional wastewater treatment processes should be improved to remove the relatively low-molecular-weight PBDEs/PAHs more effectively.

Low-carbon transition of iron and steel industry in China:Carbon intensity, economic growth and policy intervention

As the biggest iron and steel producer in the world and one of the highest CO2 emission sectors, China’s iron and steel industry is undergoing a low-carbon transition accompanied by remarkable technological progress and investment adjustment, in response to the macroeconomic climate and policy intervention. Many drivers of the CO2 emissions of the iron and steel industry have been explored, but the relationships between CO2 abatement,investment and technological expenditure, and their connections with the economic growth and governmental policies in China, have not been conjointly and empirically examined. We proposed a concise conceptual model and an econometric model to investigate this crucial question. The results of regression, Granger causality test and impulse response analysis indicated that technological expenditure can significantly reduce CO2 emissions, and that investment expansion showed a negative impact on CO2 emission reduction. It was also argued with empirical evidence that a good economic situation favored CO2 abatement in China’s iron and steel industry, while achieving CO2 emission reduction in this industrial sector did not necessarily threaten economic *** shed light on the dispute over balancing emission cutting and economic *** the policy aspects, the year 2000 was found to be an important turning point for policy evolution and the development of the iron and steel industry in China. The subsequent command and control policies had a significant, positive effect on CO2 abatement.

The response law of far-field seismic ground motion of the Wenchuan earthquake and its damaging mechanism in the Loess Plateau

A series of housing collapses and other serious damage was caused by the 2008 Wenchuan M_(S)8.0 earthquake in the seismic intensity Ⅵ areas of the Loess Plateau, which is hundreds of kilometers away from the epicenter, and which showed a remarkable seismic intensity anomaly. The seismic disasters are closely related to the seismic response characteristics of the site, therefore, the systematic study of the far-field seismic response law of the Wenchuan earthquake in the Loess Plateau is of great significance to prevent the far-field disaster of great earthquake. In this paper, the seismic acceleration records of several bedrock stations and loess stations from the seismogenic fault of the Wenchuan earthquake to the Loess Plateau were collected, and the attenuation law of ground motion along the propagation path and the characteristics of seismic response on the loess site are studied,and the mechanism of amplification effect of ground motion is analyzed based on the dynamic feature parameters of the loess site obtained through the HVSR method. Taking a typical loess site of thick deposit as the prototype, a series of shaking table tests of dynamic response of loess site models with different thicknesses were carried *** effect, spectral characteristics of acceleration in model sites were analyzed under the action of a farfield seismic wave of the Wenchuan earthquake. The results show that seismic attenuation on the propagation path along the NE strike of the seismogenic fault to the Loess Plateau is slower than that in other directions, and the predominant period range of ground motion on bedrock site of the Loess Plateau presents broadband characteristics. Because the natural periods of loess sites with thick deposits are within the predominant period range of bedrock input wave, loess sites appear significant amplification effect of ground motion, the horizontal acceleration of ground motion exceeds 0.1 g, the seismic intensity reaches 7°. Development of pretreatment protocol for DNA extraction from biofilm attached to biologic activated carbon(BAC)granules

The biologic activated carbon(BAC)process is widely used in drinking water treatments.A comprehensive molecular analysis of the microbial community structure provides very helpful data to improve the reactor ***,the bottleneck of deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA)extraction from BAC attached biofilm has to be solved since the conventional procedure was unsuccessful due to firm biomass attachment and adsorption capacity of the BAC *** this study,five pretreatments were compared,and adding skim milk followed by ultrasonic vibration was proven to be the optimal *** protocol was further tested using the vertical BAC samples from the full-scale biofilter of Pinghu Water *** results showed the DNAyielded a range of 40μg·g^(-1) BAC(dry weight)to over 100μg·g^(-1) BAC(dry weight),which were consistent with the biomass *** results suggested that the final protocol could produce qualified genomic DNA as a template from the BAC filter for downstream molecular biology researches.
