Plantain banana is an important cash crop that serves as stable food for millions of people around the world and contributes to income generation. Indeed, they provide a major staple food crop for millions of people and play an important role in the social fabric of many rural communities. Plantain banana cultivation encounters major problem of seedlings unavailability that are essential for the creation of new plantations, as well as parasitic constraints. Mycosphaerella fijiensis is the main pathogen attack constraints of banana plant responsible of black Sigatoka disease, and viruses, which can severely reduce the photosynthetic leaf area, leading to banana production losses of more than 80% in plantations with soil fertility problems. The repeated use of synthetic input is the origin of contamination to the environment, different pollution sources of plants and human health, as well as resistance to some strains of pathogens and plant fertilization problems over time. Recent works carried out in nursery have shown that vivoplants of plantains treated with biostimulants based on natural products notably Tithonia diversifolia biopromote good growth and less susceptibility to M. fijiensis. Indeed, an increase in agromorphological characteristics, good accumulation of growth and defense biomarkers was also observed. In this context, Tithonia diversifolia is shown to be involved in the stimulatory effect mechanism of growth promotion and defensive reaction of plantain vivoplants against various pathogens and it is suggested to be acting as a vital stimulator. This article reviews the current state of knowledge on plantain banana cultivation constraints and on the potential of Tithonia diversifolia in relation with its different stimulatory effects on plantain vivoplants.

Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are widely grown in Cameroon and play a key role in the fight against food insecurity, malnutrition and poverty. However, its cultivation encounters problems due to abiotic and biotic stresses, which leads to the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, which cause significant damage to the environment and human health due to the presence of synthetics residues in the seeds, pods and in the leaves that are eaten. Promoting the use of natural products is becoming a necessity for organic and eco-responsible agriculture that limits contamination problems and improves people’s purchasing power. This study aims to assess the effect of biostimulants based on natural products on the growth and nutritional value of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Bean seedlings from white variety (MEX-142) and red variety (DOR-701) were treated every seven days in the field from their pre-emergence, emergence and growth to their maturation under a randomized block experimental design. Six treatments and three repetitions with the biostimulants based on natural products and controls were thus performed and the agromorphological parameters were measured. After 120 days, the contents of growth biomarkers and defense-related enzymes were evaluated in leaves, while the contents of macromolecules, minerals and antinutrients were evaluated in seeds. These biostimulants significantly increased (P P < 0.0001) of antinutrients including oxalates, phytates, tannins and saponins in seeds compared to controls (T+ and T−). Treatment with biostimulants, in particular BS4, improves the performance of bean plants in the field as well as the biofortification of seeds regardless of the variety.

Optimization of Cellulose Nanocrystal Isolation from Ayous Sawdust Using Response Surface Methodology

This study focuses on the extraction of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), derived from Ayous sawdust. The process involves multiple steps and a large amount of chemical products. The objective of this research was to determine the effects of factors that impact the isolation process and to identify the optimal conditions for CNC isolation by using the response surface methodology. The factors that varied during the process were the quantity of MCC, the concentration of sulfuric acid, the hydrolysis time and temperature, and the ultrasonic treatment time. The response measured was the yield. The study found that with 5.80 g of microcrystalline cellulose, a sulfuric acid concentration of 63.50% (w/w), a hydrolysis time of 53 minutes, a hydrolysis temperature of 69˚C, and a sonication time of 19 minutes are the ideal conditions for isolation. The experimental yield achieved was (37.84 ± 0.99) %. The main factors influencing the process were the sulfuric acid concentration, hydrolysis time and temperature, with a significant influence (p < 0.05). Infrared characterization results showed that nanocrystals were indeed isolated. With a crystallinity of 35.23 and 79.74, respectively, for Ayous wood fiber and nanocrystalline cellulose were observed by X-ray diffraction, with the formation of type II cellulose, thermodynamically more stable than native cellulose type I.

Microbial Quality and Molecular Identification of Enterotoxigenic Staphylococcus Strains Isolated from Dried, Smoked, and Braised Fish Sold in Ouagadougou Markets

Background: The investigation of toxin genes in strains involved in staphylococcal food poisoning contributes to food safety. The aim of this study was to isolate and identify enterotoxigenic Staphylococcus strains from dried, smoked, and braised fish sold in Ouagadougou markets. Methodology: Staphylococci were isolated using standard microbiology methods. Staphylococcus strains were identified using API Staph kit (Reference # 20500, BioMerieux S.A., Marcy l'Etoile, France). The molecular identification of isolated Staphylococcus aureus strains was specifically confirmed by PCR using the Staur4 and Staur6 primers. The genes encoding enterotoxins, enterotoxin-like toxins, exfoliative toxins, and TSST-1 toxin were detected by multiplex PCR using specific primers from Inquaba Biotec West Africa Ltd, Africa's Genomics Company. Results: The results of the microbiological quality assessment indicated that most of the samples analyzed were found to be of unsatisfactory microbiological quality according to the Staphylococcus aureus microbiological criteria (m = 102). Overall, only 12.55% of samples were satisfactory, while 97.45% were unsatisfactory. The STAPH API gallery allowed the identification of the following species: Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus xylosus, Staphylococcus lugdunensis, Staphylococcus hominis, Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Staphylococcus lentus, Staphylococcus sciuri and Staphylococcus capitis. Of the 108 Staphylococcus isolates, 81 (75%) showed at least one (1) toxin gene. Among the 21 toxin genes tested in this study, 20 genes were detected in all strains analyzed. The staphylococcal toxin genes detected were present in both Staphylococcus aureus and the other coagulase-negative strains isolated in this study. In addition, these genes are found individually or in association in certain strains. Antioxidant and ɑ-glucosidase activities and phytochemical constituents of Chrysanthoglossum trifurcatum(Desf.)

Objective: To investigate the antioxidant and ɑ-glucosidase properties and phytochemical constituents of roots, stems, leaves and flowers extracts and aerial parts oil of Chrysanthoglossum trifurcatum(Desf.)(C. trifurcatum). Methods: For extraction from roots, stems, leaves and flowers of C. trifurcatum, methanol, ethyl acetate and petroleum ether solvents were used. Phenols, flavonoids, flavonols and tannins contents were evaluated. More, C. trifurcatum aerial parts oil composition was determined using chromatography/mass spectrometry. The antioxidant effect was estimated by DPPH, ABTS and reducing power test systems. The ɑ-glucosidase inhibition was determined by colorimetric assay using the enzyme from Aspergillus niger and the p-nitrophenyl glucopyranoside(pNPG) as substrate. Results: The highest amounts of polyphenols, flavonoids, flavonols and tannins were shown by the methanolic extract of leaves. The main components of the aerial parts oil were limonene(29.21%), γ-terpinene(12.96%), 4-terpenyl acetate(12.18%) and ɑ-pinene(5.76%). The activity evaluated by DPPH, ABTS and reducing power tests was important for stems(IC_(50)=0.68 mg/mL) and flowers(IC_(50)=0.67 mg/mL) methanolic extracts and essential oil(IC_(50)=0.72 mg/mL). Findings of ɑ-glucosidase activity revealed that petroleum ether extracts of leaves and roots together with aerial parts oil showed a highest activity with IC_(50) of 0.044, 0.045 and 0.049 mg/m L, respectively. Conclusions: Observed antioxidant and ɑ-glucosidase activities of oil and extracts are attributed to the presence of the active phytochemicals in C. trifurcatum organs. Thus, the C. trifurcatum can be used as a source of antioxidant compounds and dietary supplement to treat patients with type 2 diabetes.

Adsorption of Congo Red from Aqueous Solution Using CTAB-Kaolin from Bechar Algeria

Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-modified kaolin (CTAB-kaolin or KC) was prepared and tested as an adsorbent for an anionic dye Congo red (CR) removal from aqueous solution in comparison with natural kaolin (K). The effect of various experimental parameters was investigated using a batch adsorption technique. In this manner, the adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics of CR on K and KC were examined. The isothermal data could be well described by the Langmuir equation and the dynamical data fit well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption capacity of modified kaolin KC (24.46 mg/g) was found to be around 4 times higher than that of natural kaolin K (5.94 mg/g). The KC demonstrated the highest adsorption capacity by removing over 98% of CR after ten minutes of contact. These results indicate that CTAB-kaolin could be employed as low-cost alternative to activated carbon in wastewater treatment for the removal of colour which comes from industrial effluents of textile activities, tanning or printing.

Taxonomy of the lesser jerboa Jaculus jaculus (Dipodidae,Rodentia) based on allozymic and morphological variation

The lesser Egyptian jerboa Jaculus jaculus, is a member of the subfamily Dipodinae, known to have a number of subspecies. Previous studies of J. jaculus from North Africa found various morphological forms of unknown taxonomic status, which are frequently grouped into two taxa： J. jaculus and J. deserti. We assessed the taxonomic status of this taxon in Tunisia using allozymic （phylogenetic analysis of 23 genetic loci encoding 16 enzymatic proteins） and morphological （multivariate analysis of 13 craniodental characters） analyses of 136 J. jaculus specimens collected from seven localities within its distribution range. Allozymic analysis clearly indicated the existence of two distinct groups of J. jaculus, with a mean genetic distance （D） value of 0.99 and FΩ=0.52. Individuals within the two groups did not show any obvious geographical structuration, even within the Matmata locality which represents the meeting point for the two groups where they were found in sympatry. Additionally, morphometric analysis of 13 craniodental characters was clearly separated the two groups. These results were obtained over a very restricted area of the total distribution of J. jaculus and strongly suggest the occurrence of two separate and often sympatric species within the currently accepted *** in Tunisia： *** and J. deserti

The strength of starch-based bioplastics is a challenge, we tried to overcome this limitation by using electromagnetic radiation in the visible range. Synthetically obtained retrograde bioplastics were subjected to radiation from an Edison-type incandescent lamp. A cross-linked network is obtained within the bioplastic matrix considerably attenuating the usual hygroscopicity of starch and increasing the ability to resist rupture. After this positive behavior, the bioplastics were colored in order to optimize the action of light radiation. The results show a stronger and more compact bioplastic. The green-colored bioplastics show the best performance in the optimization of the resistance.

Multiporous Carbon Encapsulated Ni Nanoparticles Promoting Glycerol valorisation towards Hydrogenation against Rearrangement

A dual-templating method was used to synthesize a series of hierarchical carbon supports containing different proportions of spherical macropores(ca.200 nm in diameter)and mesoporous channels(ca.4 nm in diameter).These and some other conventional carbon materials were subsequently impregnated with Ni and tested for the conversion of *** hierarchical catalysts exhibited a significantly higher conversion(96%)and selectivity(77%)to 1,2-propanediol,and the specificity selectivity coefficient(6.1)towards 1,2-propanediol against lactic acid was three times higher than that observed over a conventional Ni/Cmnicro catalyst(2.1).The enhanced performance of these materials,compared with the Ni nanoparticles supported on conventional carbon supports,was attributed to their high surface areas(>1110 m^2·g^-1)and large pore volumes(ca.0.4 cm^3·g^-1)permitting greater accessibility of substrate and/or intermediates to Ni active *** that the concentration of accessible Ni sites in these materials is higher,a competitive benzilic-acid-rearrangement reaction to produce lactic acid was suppressed,leading to an enhanced hydrogenation selectivity to 1,*** study evidences the potential benefits,which can be established from utilizing hierarchical support materials in the valorization of biomass.
