Dopamine hydrochloride and carboxymethyl chitosan coatings for multifilament surgical suture and their influence on friction during sliding contact with skin substitute

In order to reduce the damage to tissue and fill the interstices between fibers,multifilament sutures are frequently treated with certain coating *** objective of this study was to create and characterize dopamine hydrochloride(DA)and carboxymethyl chitosan(CMCS)coatings on surgical sutures and investigate their effects on the frictional performance of the surgical sutures during sliding through a skin *** effects of the treatment on the physical and chemical characteristics of the surgical sutures were *** friction force of the surgical sutures during sliding through the skin substitute was experimentally determined using a penetration friction *** coefficient of friction(COF)was calculated using a linear elastic model and was used to estimate the frictional behavior of the surgical suture‐skin *** results showed that the DA coating could evenly deposit on the surface of the etched multifilament surgical suture surfaces in a weakly alkaline buffer *** CMCS coating material could form a uniform film on the surface of the *** changes in the surface roughness of the multifilament surgical sutures with different treatments occurred in this *** friction force and the COF of the multifilament surgical sutures with DA and CMCS coating showed little change when compared with untreated multifilament surgical sutures.

In situ polymerization preparation and mechanical properties of nanocomposites based on PA10T/10I-block-PEG copolymer and graphene oxide

Poly(decamethylene terephthalamide/decamethylene isophthalamide)-block-polyvinyl alcoho)(PA10 T/10 IPEG) copolymer/graphene oxide(GO) composites were prepared via in-situ melt polymerization and two different nano-filler addition approaches were compared. The relationship between the micro-structure and performance of the elastomer composites prepared by one-step and two-step methods was explored. The results show that the two-step method significantly promoted the dispersion of the GO in a polymer matrix, and facilitated the grafting of more hard molecular chains. Thus, the elastic modulus and tensile strength of the nanocomposite have been significantly improved by the presence of GO. This was because of the strong interaction between the functional groups on the surface of the GO and the hard molecular chains. This would be also be favorable to load transfer across the interface. Additionally, the elongation at the break of composites increased by 10% with the addition of a small amount of GO(0.2% wt). This is because hard domains tend to be enriched on the surface of GO in composites and act as a lubricating layer at the interface between the GO and matrix, leading to increased deformation ability. This work provides an effective strategy to prepare elastomer composites with high strength and toughness.

Origin of the tribofilm from MoS_(2) nanoparticle oil additives: Dependence of oil film thickness on particle aggregation in rolling point contact

The lubrication effectiveness of MoS_(2) nanoparticles as an oil additive remains unclear,restricting its application in industry to reduce *** goal of this work was to explore the lubrication mechanism of MoS_(2) nanoparticles as an oil *** this study,the oil film thickness behaviors of MoS_(2) nanoparticles in poly-alpha olefin(PAO4)base oil,PAO4 with 3 wt%dispersant(polyisobutyleneamine succinimide,PIBS),and 0W20 engine oil were investigated using an elastohydrodynamic lubrication(EHL)testing *** the EHL tests,the flow patterns around the contact area and the tribofilm covering rate on contact area were studied using optical microscopy to understand the lubrication *** results indicate that both the dispersant and nanoparticle aggregation significantly affected the oil film *** expected oil film thickness increase in the case of 0.1 wt%MoS_(2) in PAO4 base oil was obtained,with an increase from 30 to 60 nm over 15 min at a velocity of 50 mm/*** pattern analysis revealed the formation of particle aggregation on the rolling path when lubricated with 0.1 wt%MoS_(2),which is associated with a tribofilm coverage rate of 41.5%on the contact ***,an oil film thickness increase and particle aggregation were not observed during the tests with 0.1 wt%MoS_(2) blended with 3 wt%PIBS as the dispersant in PAO4 base oil,and for 0.75 wt%MoS_(2) in 0W20 engine *** results suggest that nanoparticles responsible for tribofilm formation originated from aggregates,but not the well-dispersed nanoparticles in point *** understanding should aid the advancement of novel lubricant additive design.

Two-dimensional molybdenum carbide(MXene)as an efficient nanoadditive for achieving superlubricity under ultrahigh pressure

In this study,a robust macroscale liquid superlubricity with a coefficient of friction of 0.004 was achieved by introducing molybdenum carbide(Mo_(2)CT_(x))MXene nanoparticles as lubricating additives in a lithium hexafluorophosphate-based ionic liquid at Si_(3)N_(4)-sapphire *** maximal contact pressure in the superlubricity state could reach 1.42 GPa,which far exceeds the limit of the superlubricity regime in previous *** results indicate that a composite tribofilm(mainly containing molybdenum oxide and phosphorus oxide)that formed at the interface by a tribochemical reaction contributed to the excellent antiwear ***,the extremely low shear strength of the tribofilm and the interlayers of Mo_(2)CT_(x)MXene contributed to the *** work demonstrates the promising potential of Mo_(2)CT_(x)MXene in improving superlubricity properties,which could accelerate the application of superlubricity in mechanical systems.

Thermal Error Compensation of the Wear-Depth Real-Time Detecting of Self-lubricating Spherical Plain Bearings

The spherical plain bearing test bench is a necessary detecting equipment in the research process of self?lubricating spherical plain bearings. The varying environmental temperatures cause the thermal deformation of the wear?depth detecting system of bearing test benches and then a ect the accuracy of the wear?depth detecting data. However, few researches about the spherical plain bearing test benches can be found with the implementation of the detect?ing error compensation. Based on the self?made modular spherical plain bearing test bench, two main causes of ther?mal errors, the friction heat of bearings and the environmental temperature variation, are analysed. The thermal errors caused by the friction heat of bearings are calculated, and the thermal deformation of the wear?depth detecting sys?tem caused by the varying environmental temperatures is detected. In view of the above results, the environmental temperature variation is the main cause of the two error factors. When the environmental temperatures rise is 10.3 °C, the thermal deformation is approximately 0.01 mm. In addition, the comprehensive compensating model of the thermal error of the wear?depth detecting system is built by multiple linear regression(MLR) and time series analysis. Compared with the detecting data of the thermal errors, the comprehensive compensating model has higher fitting precision, and the maximum residual is only 1 μm. A comprehensive compensating model of the thermal error of the wear?depth detecting system is proposed, which provides a theoretical basis for the improvement of the real?time wear?depth detecting precision of the spherical plain bearing test bench.

A series of new halogen-free dicationic ionic liquids(ILs)with different alkyl chain lengths were prepared,and the relationship between the alkyl chain length,physicochemical and tribological properties of ILs,and their role as neat lubricant for steel–steel friction pairs,was *** of stability during hydrolysis and copper strip corrosion test results show that synthetic ILs are stable and not corrosive to metal contacts,due to the halogen-free *** friction and wear test results indicate that ILs with long alkyl chains have excellent friction-reducing and anti-wear properties,especially at high *** on the surface three-dimensional(3D)profiles,electrical contact resistance,scanning electron microscopy(SEM),energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS),and the X-ray photoelectron spectrometry(XPS)analysis of the worn surfaces of steel discs,we can conclude that the efficiency of ILs is due to the formation of high quality tribofilms that consist of both tribochemical reaction and ordered absorption films.

Effects of Electropulsing Cutting on the Quenched and Tempered 45 Steel Rods

Electropulsing is introduced into the cutting process for quenched and tempered 45 steel, which is a novel method to improve the material machinability compared with the conventional cutting process. The effects of electropulsing on cutting performances, microstructure evolution, and surface qualities of 45 steel rods were studied. The results indicate that electropulsing is beneficial for the cutting process in 3 aspects as follows：（1） reducing the principal cutting force, surface microhardness and surface roughness of the machined sample dramatically;（2） improving the machining efficiency and prolonging the life of cutting tools;（3） decreasing the thickness of rheological layer which was usually caused by work hardening in the cutting process. The morphology and microstructure of the cutting chips showed that the length of the chips increased significantly with the increase of the current density. The advantage of electropulsing is that it can improve the plastic deformation capability as well as increase the lubricating property between the specimen and the cutting tool.

Simultaneously enhanced heat dissipation and tribological properties of polyphenylene sulfide-based composites via constructing segregated network structure

Self-lubricating polyphenylene sulfide(PPS)composites were fabricated by constructing a segregated network structure using the co-deposition *** carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes(CNTs)and silicon carbide(SiC)were successfully coated on the surface of PPS powders with the aid of self-polymerization of dopamine(PDA)and co-polymerization between PDA and polyethyleneimine(PEI),thereby forming PPS@PDA-CNTs-SiC hierarchical reinforcing *** showed that the thermal conductivity of PPS@PDA-CNTs-SiC(0.97 W/(m K))is about 120%higher than that of PPS/CNTs/*** friction coefficient(0.193)and specific wear rate(2.50×10^(-5)mm^(3)/(N m))of PPS@PDA-CNTs-SiC are 18.9%and 50%lower than those of PPS/CNTs/SiC,*** enhanced thermal conductivity of PPS@PDA-CNTs-SiC contributes to rapid dissipation of frictional heat at the sliding interface which protects the polymer substrate from being destroyed or peeled,thereby improving the tribological *** work provides new insights into expanding the application of self-lubricating polymer composites in the fields where efficient heat dissipation is also a primary concern.
