During the 20th century,there has been an ongoing agricultural expansion and global warming,two of the main determinants influencing biodiversity changes in Argentina.The red hocicudo mouse(Oxymycterus rufus)inhabits subtropical grasslands and riparian habitats and has increased its abundance in recent years in central Argentina agroecosystems.This paper describes the long-term temporal changes in O.rufus abundance in Exaltación de la Cruz department,Buenos Aires province,Argentina,in relation to weatherfluctuations and landscape features,as well as analyzes the spatio-temporal structure of captures of animals.We used generalized liner models,semi-variograms,the Mantel test,and autocorrelation functions for the analysis of rodent data obtained from trappings conducted between 1984 and 2014.O.rufus showed an increase in abundance across the years of study,with its distribution depending on landscape features,such as habitat types and the distance tofloodplains.Capture rates showed a spatio-temporal aggregation,suggesting expansion from previously occupied sites.O.rufus was more abundant at lower minimum temperatures in summer,higher precipitation in spring and summer,and lower precip-itations in winter.Weather conditions affected O.rufus abundance,but there was local variation that differed from global patterns of climate change.

Rodents are reservoirs of various types of hantavirus,some of which are agents of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in humans.Each hantavirus is associated with a single rodent host species but successive spill-over events may eventually lead to host-switching and new species’becoming host of a given pathogen.This study aims to gain an understanding of the spatial ecology of two hantavirus-host species,Akodon azarae,and Oligoryzomys flavescens,by identifying factors modulating their home range sizes and stability,and by evaluating intra-and interspecific spatial aggregation for these species and a third one—Oxymycterus rufus—living in sympatry.For this,eleven capture-mark-recapture surveys were carried out,spanning 22 months.We found that A.azarae males have larger and more mobile home ranges than females,independently of the season.Consequently,males could likely have a more relevant role in the transmission of hantavirus because of their greater exposure both to a higher number of contacts between individuals and viral contamination of the environment.Contrasting,O.flavescens individuals showed negligible displacements of their home range through time,which could limit the range of hantavirus spread in host populations.Since O.flavescens is host to Lechiguanas hantavirus(pathogenic to humans)this result encompasses epidemiological relevance,for it may imply the existence of local foci of infection.Additionally,individuals of both species performed excursions outside their home ranges.These events could enable hantavirus spread over distances beyond the normal range of movements and lead to new hantavirus outbreaks in formerly non-infected rodent populations,favoring the persistence of the virus in nature.

Cloud forest ecosystems of the Latin American tropics are highly threatened by changes in land-use such as expanding croplands and livestock pastures that promote shifts in the structure and composition of plant communities in these forests.However,shade coffee plantations represent a forest management alternative that has been shown to maintain biodiversity in these ecosystems.In this study,we evaluated changes in the composition,diversity,and structure of Mexican cloud-forest woody species for three land use categories:cattle pastures,shade coffee plantations and advanced succession forests.For each category,fifteen 0.28-ha plots were established and the composition and diversity of vegetation was noted.Composition of species was analyzed using ordination methods,and alpha diversity was compared using Hill numbers.Seventy-seven woody species belonging to 40 families were recorded.Species richness and diversity was high in both the advanced successional forest and coffee plantations compared to cattle pastures.Vegetation composition and structure was similar between late succession forests and coffee plantations with both land uses also being more structurally complex than cattle pastures.Our results show how shade coffee cultivation is a land-use activity that maintains woody plant communities in a manner that aligns with biodiversity conservation.

Orchid diversity provides a unique opportunity to further our understanding of biotic and abiotic factors linked to patterns of richness,endemism,and phylogenetic endemism in many regions.However,orchid diversity is consistently threatened by illegal trade and habitat transformation.Here,we identified areas critical for orchid conservation in the biogeographic province of Megamexico.For this purpose,we evaluated orchid endemism,phylogenetic diversity,and phylogenetic endemism within Megamexico and characterized orchid life forms.Our results indicate that the majority of the regions with the highest estimates of endemism and phylogenetic endemism are in southern Mexico and northern Central America,mostly located on the Pacific side of Megamexico.Among the most important orchid lineages,several belong to epiphytic lineages such as Pleurothallidinae,Laeliinae and Oncidiinae.We also found that species from diverse and distantly related lineages converge in montane forests where suitable substrates for epiphytes abound.Furthermore,the southernmost areas of phylogenetic diversity and endemism of Megamexico are in unprotected areas.Thus,we conclude that the most critical areas for orchid conservation in Megamexico are located in southern Mexico and northern Central America.We recommend that these areas should be given priority by the Mexican system of natural protected areas as complementary conservation areas.

Diet composition and its ecological drivers are rarely investigated in coexisting closely related species.We used a molecular approach to characterize the seasonal variation in diet composition in four spiny lizard species inhabiting a mountainous ecosystem.DNA metabarcoding revealed that the lizards Sceloporus aeneus,S.bicanthalis,S.grammicus,and S.spinosus mostly consumed arthropods of the orders Hemiptera,Araneae,Hymenoptera,and Coleoptera.The terrestrial lizards S.aeneus and S.bicanthalis mostly predated ants and spiders,whereas the arboreal–saxicolous S.grammicus and saxicolous S.spinosus largely consumed grasshoppers and leafhoppers.The taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity of the prey was higher during the dry season than the rainy season,likely because reduced prey availability in the dry season forced lizards to diversify their diets to meet their nutritional demands.Dietary and phylogenetic composition varied seasonally depending on the species,but only dietary composition varied with altitude.Seasonal dietary turnover was greater in S.spinosus than in S.bicanthalis,suggesting site-specific seasonal variability in prey availability;no other differences among species were observed.S.bicanthalis,which lives at the highest altitude in our study site,displayed interseasonal variation in diet breadth.Dietary differences were correlated with the species’feeding strategies and elevational distribution,which likely contributed to the coexistence of these lizard species in the studied geographic area and beyond.

Aims Foliar herbivory and water stress may affect floral traits attractive to pollinators.Plant genotypes may differ in their responses to the interplay between these factors,and evolution of phenotypic plasticity could be expected,particularly in heterogeneous environments.We aimed at evaluating the effects of simulated herbivory and experimental drought on floral traits attractive to pollinators in genetic families of the annual tarweed Madia sativa,which inhabits heterogeneous environments in terms of water availability,herbivore abundance and pollinator abundance.Methods In a greenhouse experiment with 15 inbred lines from a M.sativa population located in central Chile(Mediterranean-type climate),we measured the effects of apical bud damage and reduced water availability on:number of ray florets per flower head,length of ray florets,flower head diameter,number of open flower heads per plant,flowering plant height and flowering time.Important Findings Apical damage and water shortage reduced phenotypic expression of floral traits attractive to pollinators via additive and non-additive effects.Plants in low water showed decreased height and had fewer and shorter ray florets,and fewer and smaller flower heads.Damaged plants showed delayed flowering,were less tall,and showed shorter ray florets and smaller flower heads.The number of ray florets was reduced by damage only in the low water treatment.Plant height,flowering time and number of flower heads showed among-family variation.These traits also showed genetic variation for plasticity to water availability.Ray floret length,flower head size and time to flowering showed genetic variation for plastic responses to apical damage.Plasticity in flowering time may allow M.sativa to adjust to the increased aridity foreseen for its habitat.Because genetic variation for plastic responses was detected,conditions are given for evolutionary responses to selective forces acting on plastic traits.We suggest that the evolution of adaptive floral plasticity in M.sativa in this

Arthropod communities and epiphytic plants associated with tree canopies have been widely studied and have revealed a great diversity of organisms; however,the community hosted by parasitic plants,such as dwarf mistletoes,remains poorly known.In the coniferous forests of North America,dwarf mistletoe infection（Arceuthobium spp.） significantly damages the health of the forest,causing large financial losses for the forest industry,but it also positively affects diversity,especially of mammals and birds.This study examined the attributes of the arthropod communities associated with two species of dwarf mistletoe [Arceuthobium globosum Hawksw.＆ Wiens and A.vaginatum（Humb.＆ Bonpl.ex Willd.） J.Presl] and their host Pinus hartwegii Lindl.In 2010,in five sites located in Zoquiapan（Central Mexico）,we collected plant tissue from the three species bimonthly.Arthropods were separated from the plant tissue and identified to the finest level possible.We collected 32,059 individuals,for which51 morphospecies were identified,belonging to 15 taxonomic orders; the most abundant orders for the three plants were Prostigmata,Thysanoptera and Homoptera.The community associated with P.hartwegii had the highest value of diversity（H＇= 1.47; A.globosum,H＇= 0.64; A.vaginatum,H＇= 0.68） and species richness（S = 40; A.globosum,S = 30; A.vaginatum,S = 35）; while abundance was significantly higher for the mistletoes（A.globosum,n = 407 individuals/sample; A.vaginatum,n = 536 individuals/sample; P.hartwegii,n = 134 individuals/sample）.Species richness,abundance and diversity were significantly different for the three studied plants,as well for sampling month and the interaction of these two factors（except for diversity）.The results suggest that the canopy of P.hartwegii is an important element in the ecosystem,providing a mosaic of resources and conditions to the associated fauna.We also propose that mistletoes are key species within the forest canopy,as they greatly influence the establishment of diverse organisms,particularly arthropods.

Phenotypic variation in organisms depends on the genotype and the environmental constraints of the habitat that they exploit.Therefore,for marine species inhabiting contrasting aquatic conditions,it is expected toﬁnd covari-ation between the shape and its spatial distribution.We studied the morphology of the head and cephalic sensory canals of the eelpout Austrolycus depressiceps(4.5–22.5 cm TL)across its latitudinal distribution in South Paciﬁc(45°S–55°S).Geometric morphometric analyses show that the shape varied from individuals with larger snout and an extended suborbital canal to individuals with shorter snouts and frontally compressed suborbital canal.There was size variation across the sampled populations,but that size does not have a clear latitudinal gradient.Only 8%of the shape variation relates to this size variation(allometry),represented by a decrease in the relative size of the eye,and a depression of the posterior margin of the head.There were spatial differences in the shape of the head,but these differences were probably caused by allometric effects.Additionally,2 of the canals of the cephalic lateralis pores and the head shape showed modularity in its development.This study shows that the morphology of marineﬁsh with a shallow distribution varies across distances of hundreds of kilometers(i.e.,phenotypic modulation).

Intruder familiarity and not duet similarity influences the territory defense in a year-round territorial bird species

To avoid unnecessary energy expenditures in territorial defense,many species(e.g.,insects,amphibians,birds,and mammals)have developed the capability to distinguish between different intruder types using visual,acoustic,and/or chemical signals.determining the mechanism used for intruder recognition is key to understanding the dynamics of territorial behaviors.In birds that use vocalizations for territorial defense,the frequency and duration of vocalizations or the familiarity with the intruder may be the main mechanism used for intruder recognition.Here,we conducted a playback experiment with territorial White-eared Ground-sparrows(Melozone leucotis),to analyze if territorial pairs recognize intruders using frequency and duration characteristics(a bird’s response is based on how structurally similar the intruders’duets are to their own)or by familiarity with the intruders(neighbors vs.non-neighbors).We focused on duets because this species uses duets exclusively for territorial defense.We broadcasted a duet from a territorial neighbor,two duets from non-neighbors(with different frequency and duration characteristics),and a duet from a control species in 39 territorial pair from three populations.During playback we measured five behavioral responses:latency of the first vocalization,latency of the approach to the speaker,time spent close the speaker(within 5 m),number of individuals that approached the speaker,and the number of vocalizations.We found that territorial White-eared Ground-sparrow pairs responded stronger to neighbors than non-neighbors,and this response is not influenced by duet duration or frequency characteristics.This result suggests that neighbors represent a greater territorial threat for White-eared Ground-sparrows than non-neighbors.Further work is necessary to understand how common this observation is for tropical species that defend small territories year-round.

Fire is a natural agent with a paramount role in ecosystem functioning and biodiversity maintenance.Still,it can also act as a negative force against many ecosystems.despite some knowledge of the interactions of fire and vegetation,there is no clear understanding of how different components of fire regimes(i.e.,severity,history,or frequency)influence known patterns of animal communities.Therefore,we performed a systematic review on the global responses of arthropods,birds,mammals,reptiles,and amphibians to different fire regimes.Specifically,we focused on assessing how fire severity,history,and frequency modulate the effect of fire on the richness and abundance of faunal communities.We conducted a systematic review of 566 papers retrieved from the Scopus database.We also scrutinized all the documents included in the meta‑analysis of Pastro et al.(Pastro et al.Glob Ecol Biogeogr 23:1146–1156,2014).Our selection criteria excluded studies without data on species richness or abundance.We also excluded studies without adequate controls and those without information about the fire regime of the study zone.After careful examination,we used data from 162 studies to perform a quantitative meta‑analysis.From the 162 studies meeting our selection criteria,nearly 60%of the studies are from North America,25%from Australia,11%from Europe,and 4%from the tropics.According to the ecological role of fire,90%of the studies were carried out in fire‑dependent ecosystems(i.e.,conifer forests,natural savannas,pastures).Finally,40%of the studies analyzed birds,22%mammals,and 20%arthropods.The meta‑analysis of the available evidence indicates that fire history is an important modulator of animal richness and abundance.Whether negative or positive,animal responses depended on the time since the last fire event.Considering that short‑term studies may not capture such a long‑term effect on fauna,this translates to more challenges at implementing fire management strategies.Whether or not we can anticipate the impact of the fire will then dep
