Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) remains one of the major public health problems throughout the *** originally associated with tumorigenic processes,liver angiogenesis has also been observed in the context of different liver in-flammatory,fibrotic,and ischemic *** we investigate the fractal dimension as a quantitator of non-Euclidean two-dimensional vascular geometry in a series of paired specimens of primary HCC and surrounding non-tumoral tissue,and discuss why this parameter might provide additional information regarding cancer *** application of fractal geometry to the measurement of liver vascularity and the availability of a computer-aided quantitative method can eliminate errors in visual interpretation,and make it possible to obtain closer-to-reality numerals that are compulsory for any measurement process.

Finding and Choosing among Multiple Optima

Black box functions, such as computer experiments, often have multiple optima over the input space of the objective function. While traditional optimization routines focus on finding a single best optimum, we sometimes want to consider the relative merits of multiple optima. First we need a search algorithm that can identify multiple local optima. Then we consider that blindly choosing the global optimum may not always be best. In some cases, the global optimum may not be robust to small deviations in the inputs, which could lead to output values far from the optimum. In those cases, it would be better to choose a slightly less extreme optimum that allows for input deviation with small change in the output;such an optimum would be considered more robust. We use a Bayesian decision theoretic approach to develop a utility function for selecting among multiple optima.

Systemic lupus erythematosus （SLE） is a prototypic autoimmune disease. Innate and adaptive immunity cooperatively contribute to the development of SLE. Antigen-presenting cells （APCs） have been suggested to link innate and adaptive immunity. T-cell immunoglobulin- and mucin-domain-containing molecule-4 （Tim-4; also known as Timd4）, expressed primarily on the surface of APCs, is a member of the TIM family, a recently described group of molecules that have received much attention as potential regulators of the immune system. In this study, we used quantitative real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction to examine the mRNA expression of Tim-4 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells （PBMCs） from SLE patients and further analyzed the correlation between the expression of Tim-4 and Tim- 1 （a potential l igand for Tim-4） in PB MCs and serum tumor necrosis factor （TNF）-a levels. The results showed that Tim-4 mRNA expression in PBMCs was significantly higher in SLE patients than in healthy controls, especially those patients in the active phase of disease. Moreover, Tim-4 mRNA levels were closely correlated with Tim- 1 mRNA levels in PBMCs and with serum TNF-a levels in SLE patients but not in the control group. Taken together, these results demonstrate that Tim-4 may be involved in the pathogenesis of SLE.

An efficient method to enhance recovery and detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater

Wastewater surveillance(WS)of SARS-CoV-2 currently requires multiple steps and suffers low recoveries and poor ***,we report an improved analytical method with high sensitivity and recovery to quantify SARS-CoV-2 RNA in *** improve the recovery,we concentrated SARS-CoV-2 viral particles and RNA from both the solid and aqueous phases of wastewater using an electronegative membrane(EM).The captured viral particles and RNA on the EM were incubated in our newly developed viral inactivation and RNA preservation(VIP)***,the RNA was concentrated on magnetic beads and inhibitors removed by *** eluting,the RNA on the magnetic beads was directly detected using reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction(RT-qPCR).Analysis of SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus(SARS-CoV-2 RNA in a noninfectious viral coat)spiked to wastewater samples showed an improved recovery of 80%.Analysis of 120 wastewater samples collected twice weekly between May 2021 and February 2022 from two wastewater treatment plants showed 100%positive detection,which agreed with the results independently obtained by a provincial public health *** concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in these wastewater samples ranged from 2.4×10^(2) to 2.9×10^(6) copies per 100 mL of *** method’s capability of detecting trace and diverse concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 in complex wastewater samples is attributed to the enhanced recovery of SARS-CoV-2 RNA and efficient removal of PCR *** improved method for the recovery and detection of viral RNA in wastewater is important for wastewater surveillance,complementing clinical diagnostic tests for public health protection.

Real-time time-dependent density functional theory(TDDFT)is presently the most accurate available method for computing electronic stopping powers from first ***,obtaining application-relevant results often involves either costly averages over multiple calculations or ad hoc selection of a representative ion *** consider a broadly applicable,quantitative metric for evaluating and optimizing trajectories in this *** methodology enables rigorous analysis of the failure modes of various common trajectory choices in crystalline *** randomly selecting trajectories is common practice in stopping power calculations in solids,we show that nearly 30%of random trajectories in an FCC aluminum crystal will not representatively sample the material over the time and length scales feasibly simulated with TDDFT,and unrepresentative choices incur errors of up to 60%.We also show that finite-size effects depend on ion trajectory via“ouroboros”effects beyond the prevailing plasmon-based interpretation,and we propose a cost-reducing scheme to obtain converged results even when expensive core-electron contributions preclude large *** work helps to mitigate poorly controlled approximations in first-principles stopping power calculations,allowing 1–2 order of magnitude cost reductions for obtaining representatively averaged and converged results.

Colorectal cancer （CRC）, the third most commonly di- agnosed type of cancer in men and women worldwide is recognized as a complex multi-pathway disease, an observation sustained by the fact that histologically identical tumors may have different outcome, including various response to therapy. Therefore, particularly in early and intermediate stage （stages Ⅱ and Ⅲ, respec- tively） CRC, there is a compelling need for biomarkers helpful of selecting patients with aggressive disease that might benefit from adjuvant and targeted therapy. Histopathological examination shows that likely other solid tumors the development and progression of hu- man CRC is not only determined by genetically abnor- mal cells, but also by intricate interactions between malignant cells and the surrounding microenvironment. This has led to reconsider the features of tumor mi- croenvironment as potential predictive and prognostic biomarkers. Among the histopathological biomarkers, tumor budding （i.e., the presence of individual cells and small clusters of tumor cells at the tumor invasive front）has received much recent attention, particularly in the setting of CRC. Although its acceptance as a reportable factor has been held back by a lack of uniformity with respect to qualitative and quantitative aspects, tumor budding is now considered as an independent adverse prognostic factor in CRC that may allow for stratifica- tion of patients into risk categories more meaningful than those defined by tumor-node-metastasis staging alone, and also potentially guide treatment decisions, especially in T2-T3 NO （stage Ⅱ） CRCs.

Analytical techniques for serratiopeptidase: A review

A review is presented on different analytical techniques used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of serratiopeptidase, a proteolytic enzyme, which has recently gained importance as an anti-inflammatory *** have been made to collate all the relevant references to the extent possible. The review discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the cited analytical techniques, which will help to give insights into the methods used for estimation of serratiopeptidase as such, from clinical isolates and from its dosage *** review highlights the basic as well as advanced techniques performed for estimating serratiopeptidase. The techniques illustrated here have been demonstrated to be useful for qualitative and quantitative determination of serratiopeptidase and may find application in analyzing other related proteases.
