Exploring the Project Potential of Marine Current Turbines: A Case Study in the Southern Brazilian Shelf Region

The application of marine current turbines for electricity generation could offer a distinct advantage over other renewable energy sources due to the regular and predictable nature of this resource. This paper details the application of Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) as a possible tool for decision makers to better understand the environment and the impacts of the marine current turbines. The best areas for generating energy from the currents were found using a tridimensional model (TELEMAC3D). In addition to applying the energy conversion module, these regions were also evaluated for energy production, which was then applied to the AHP. Several databases (Transmission and Transport, Socioeconomic, Conservation Units, Endangered Species and geological Information) were compared to minimize decision deviation. The results showed the viability of the northern region of the Southern Brazilian Shelf (SBS) as a possible area to harvest energy from the currents, as much of the studied region was limited by human activities in the coastal zone and sensitive biological resources.

The aim of the current study was to determine the nature of the seasonal variability of the Suspended Particulate Matter(SPM) fluxes from the drainage basin to the estuary in a macrotidal region(Northeastern Brazil),and the estuarine response to a seawater intrusion regarding sediment deposition,which will support the understanding of the global transport of materials at the continent-ocean *** structure data was acquired using a Conductivity,Temperature,and depth(CTD) probe with a sampling frequency of 4 *** particulate material was measured by gravimetric measurements applied to exact filtered volume *** outflows were measured through the use of an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler(ADCP) with frequency of 1.5 *** horizontal thermal and saline gradients varied from warmer and less saline waters(2014) to cooler and saline waters(2015).The gradient behavior when linked to volume transport and SPM flows,suggests a minimization of the fluvial flows in 2015,easing the advance of coastal water(CW) towards the inner estuary,leading to an inversion of the baroclinic pressure *** bottom saline front,generated by the entrance of coastal water masses,caused an increase in SPM concentrations due to increased fluid density,resuspension of previously deposited sediment,and erosion of *** concentrations of SPM indicate higher volume transport suggesting a hydraulic barrier due to the change/inversion of the baroclinic pressure gradient,resulting in water and material *** deposition was observed during neap tide,while during spring tide the material is resuspended,increasing the concentration,generating cycles of deposition and erosion during the neap-spring *** sediment in suspension that reach the estuary,even with low fluvial volume,stay in this environment forming new islands because of *** deposition rates or sediment cycling,if generated by the hydraulic barrier,may indicate that the flo

Recent modeling studies on the shedding of Loop Current rings suggest that the intensification of the dominant zonal wind field delays the detachment of rings and affects the Loop Current migrations. The atmospheric modulation of the Loop Current migrations is analyzed here using reanalysis winds and altimetry-derived observa- tions. A newly developed methodology is applied to locate the Loop Current front, and a wavelet-based semblance analysis is used to explore correlations with atmospheric forcing. The results show that weakening （intensification） of the zonal wind stress in the eastern Gulf of Mexico is related with the Loop Current excursions to the north （south）. Semblance analyses confirm negative correlations between the zonal wind stress and the Loop Current migrations during the past 20 years. The intrusions of the Loop Current might involve an increase of the Yucatan Transport, which would balance the westward Rossby wave speed of a growing loop and delay the ring shedding. The results of this study have consequences for the interpretation of the chaotic processes of ring detachment and Loop Current intrusions, which might be modulated by wind stress.

Transparent Exopolymer Particles (TEP) has a known crucial role in vertical fluxes of carbon in the ocean and has been intensively studied in the last decade. Nevertheless, few studies have considered horizontal fluxes of TEP. These fluxes arise prominently between estuaries and the coast, where its importance is associated to the predominant horizontal transport. This is due both to the low density of the TEP agglomerate generated in low density waters of continental origin, and to the fact that the main component of the advective transport at estuarine regions is the horizontal one. In this study, the significance of TEP in the particulate matter exchange between estuary and coast was analyzed in the estuarine lagoon system of Cananéia-Iguape (southeast coast of Brazil). TEP, total seston (TS), organic seston (OS) and chlorophyll a (Chl.a) were analyzed over complete tidal cycles, during the dry and rainy seasons both at spring and neap tides. Horizontal fluxes and net transport rates of these variables were also calculated. TEP concentrations (max. 4991 μg Xeq/L) were almost one order of magnitude higher during the rainy season. TEP horizontal transport rates as high as 1.8 g Xeq. m/s were observed at the northern inlet of the system. In terms of particulate carbon, it represents 32.7 g TEP-C m/s or 4% of the OS transport rates. Our study quantifies the advective transport of TEP and their importance in particulate matter exchange between a subtropical estuarine system and the adjacent coastal region. Our results contribute to the knowledge of exopolimer particles dynamics in subtropical estuarine systems, and their relationship to phyto-plankton biomass and particulate matter.

The analysis of wave effects above salinity is important in order to define mixing processes and their potential to change density gradients, since action in the region of the Patos Lagoon plume is highly dynamic. This paper aims to evaluate the influence of waves on the mixing pattern of the adjacent continental shelf. Constantly marked by tides and circulation variations, changing from flood to ebb tide, salinity stands as a major parameter for analysis. The study is based on hydrodynamic numerical modeling experiments using the TELEMAC3D model and waves generated by the wind using the TOMAWAC coupled model. The comparison between the situations considering the waves generated by the wind and without waves was made through time series analysis, stratification series, transversal cross sections, longitudinal cross sections, salinity mean fields and diagrams by Richardson and Brünt-V?is?l?s frequency parameters. With the cross sections analysis, the mixing effect generated by the waves was observed, demonstrating clearly that the waves were capable of raising the superficial salinity in regions far from the Patos Lagoon entrance, while at the entrance, the wave effects enhanced the mixing on the deepest layers, decreasing the saline intrusion and expanding the plume more radially on the surface. The space-temporal diagrams were effective to demonstrate the modulation effect of the waves over the salt mixing of saline waters, revealing that wave effects decrease the stratification as well as the Brünt-V?is?l?s frequency and increase the period of buoyancy, due to the mixing increase.

Investigation of process controlling the estuarine-shelf interaction in the Patos Lagoon estuarine channel is accessed using a two-dimensional numerical model. Results obtained suggest this approximation provides good precision level to investigate the advective transport of oceanic waters near the estuarine mouth. The introduction of coastal waters in synoptic time scales is dominated by advection in sub-superficial layers. This process results from the competition between flood currents driven by remote wind effects and gravitational circulation controlled by the intensity of the freshwater discharge. The short term exchange processes follow one most energetic cycle of 8 days and intense flood events occur during periods of low continental discharge and higher intensity winds. Very stratified salinity profiles are found during periods of moderated freshwater discharge. The salt transport is inversely related to the freshwater discharge intensity. It presents a mean rate of the 105 ***-1 transported landward during flood events.

Modeling an Oil Spill along the Southern Brazilian Shelf: Forcing Characterization and Its Influence on the Oil Fate

Oil spills can generate multiple effects in different time scales on the marine ecosystem. The numerical modeling of these processes is an important tool with low computational cost which provides a powerful appliance to environmental agencies regarding the risk management. In this way, the objective of this work is to evaluate the influence of a number of physical forcing acting over a hypothetical oil spill along the Southern Brazilian Shelf. The numerical simulation was carried out using the ECOS model (Easy Coupling Oil System), an oil spill model developed at the Universidade Federal do rio Grande—FURG, coupled with the tridimensional hydrodynamic model TELEMAC3D (EDF, France). The hydrodynamic model provides the current velocity, salinity and temperature fields used by the oil spill model to evaluate the behavior and the fate of the spilled oil. The results suggest that the local wind influence is the main forcing driven the fate of the spilled oil, and this forcing responds for more than 60% of the oil slick variability. The direction and intensity of the costal currents control between 20% and 40% of the oil variability, and the currents are important controlling the behavior and the tridimensional transportation of the oil. On the other hand, the turbulent diffusion is important for the horizontal drift of the oil. The weathering results indicate 40% of evaporation and 80% of emulsification, and the combination of these processes leads an increasing of the oil density around, 53.4 kg/m3 after 5 days of simulation.

Increasing continental suspended sediment influx to coral reefs is an example of land-sea coupling that requires the identification of sources,magnitude of transport,and controlling *** Brazil,a small coastal basin(Macae River) was identified as a source of suspended sediment to a coral reef on the coast of Cape Armacao dos *** suspended sediment loads were measured at the basin as were fluxes within the estuary and towards the coast during eight tidal *** load and yield from this basin were typical of small coastal basins,showing high to moderate slopes and transitional land ***,the magnitude of the river loads was lower than the sediment transport within the estuary,indicating that the estuary amplifies river fluxes and sustains the transference of suspended sediment alongshore to the coral ***,the estuary displays both suspended particle retention and export capacity and,therefore,fluxes to the coast and the coral reef occur as episodic events.

Abiotic parameters and phytoplankton were collected during 2010 and 2011 with the purpose of describing the phytoplankton distribution and the environmental characteristics. The diatoms were the most representative group in terms of species richness;in terms of density, the Cyanobacteria were more representative. Diversity and equitability were generally low in the estuary due to the dominance of Microcystis aeruginosa, an opportunistic and potentially toxic species of Cyanobacteria. The estuarine region is strongly impacted by high pollutant loads, especially nitrogen and phosphate compounds. Historical series of Apparent Oxygen Utilization (AOU) showed negative trends associated with changes in the estuarine system. The main biological components changed through 1999-2011 period. The dominance of the species changed from the Bacillariophyta in previous studies to the Cyanobacteria in our study. The species Microcystis aeruginosa, through its high density, dominance and frequency of occurrence, was the key species in the area.
