CREATING LIVABLE INFRASTRUCTURE:THE CONNECTOAKLAND VISION TO RECONNECT NEIGHBORHOODS AND CONNECT CITIES THROUGH FREEWAY REMOVAL

Throughout the second half of the 20th Century,our nation’s cities were marred by the onslaught of unsustainable suburbanization and the expansion of limited access highways that ripped through urban centers and divided communities within *** with systematic disinvestment from redlining and white flight,these forces combined to create lasting physical,social and economic hardships in cities across the *** the last 20 years,cities have rebounded in America and new patterns of thought focused on livability,walkability and urban form have started to sprout:from the Big-Dig in Boston to Octavia Boulevard and the Embarcadero in San Francisco,cities are reassessing the value of highways that solely move automobiles through cities,and have started to focus on how these pieces of infrastructure impact the daily lives and economic interests of a their residents and *** Oakland,California,through the efforts of ConnectOAKLAND,the city is taking up the mantle of this new pattern of thought and is beginning the planning process to reconnect West Oakland to Downtown by transforming an underutilized freeway(I-980)into a multi-modal transportation corridor that reestablishes the historic urban *** project’s dual benefit will reconnect two of Oakland’s historic neighborhoods while better connecting Oakland along with the entire East Bay to San Francisco,San Jose and Silicon Valley through the incorporation of a second transbay tunnel for Bay Area Rapid Transit(BART),commuter rail(Caltrain),and high speed rail(HSR).This article will explore the ConnectOAKLAND vision for I-980 as a case study for current and future patterns of highway removal,and as a part of the national movement to rethink the role of urban highways and holistically re-envision the US transportation infrastructure.

A MODEL OF A NEAR-ZERO ENERGY HOME(NZEH)USING PASSIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES AND PV TECHNOLOGY IN HOT CLIMATES

INTRODUCTION Recent development has seen a drastic increase in energy use trends in Saudi Arabian buildings leading to a demand for an effective course of action for energy conservation and production.A case study-based research initiative explor-ing near-zero energy potential in Saudi Arabia was undertaken.A 4-bedroom detached single-family faculty residence at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals(KFUPM)representing common regional housing design trends was utilized.A base case simulation model of the house was developed and val-idated using short-term and real-time energy consumption *** sets of strategies:passive design strategies,representative codes and standards,and renewable technology were employed in the new design of the *** strategies com-prised a green roof,a ventilated wall system,a sloped roof,and insulation for thermal *** alternatives helped reduce the annual energy consumption of the house by 17.2%.The most recent version of the International Energy Conserva-tion Code(IECC 2012)was also incorporated along with ASHRAE Standard 62.2 for *** code and standard together reduced the annual energy consumption by 31.1%.Solar PV was then utilized to reduce grid utilization for the remainder of the house energy *** strategy provided 24.7%of the total energy consumed annually.A combination of strategies showed a 70.7%energy consumption reduction,thereby decreasing the energy index of the house from 162.9 to 47.7 kWh/m^(2)/*** Zero Energy Building(ZEB)concepts and strategies utilized in this study demonstrate a socially responsible approach to achieving near-zero energy performance for an existing house.

This paper describes the design of InterTech,a zero-energy mixed-use student residence hall,developed in 2018 by an interdisciplinary team of Illinois Institute of Technology(Illinois Tech)students for the *** of Energy Solar Decathlon Design Challenge,formerly known as Race to *** main focus is the team’s integrated and iterative approach,which blended architectural design and engineering concepts and led to achieving the high-performance *** aims to provide an innovative housing solution to Illinois Institute of Technology’s graduate students and their *** along State Street in between Illinois Tech’s main campus and downtown Chicago,it offers a mix of living options providing both independence and access to the campus and to the *** addition to the residential program,the project includes a small grocery/cafe con-nected to an outdoor public plaza,and an underground *** modeling was introduced in the early design *** potential of on-site renewable energy generation defined the project’s target Energy Use Intensity(EUI)of 37 kBtu/*** passive and active strategies were implemented to reduce the building’s total energy needs and meet the target *** implementation of energy conservation measures led to a 25%reduction of the building’s cooling load and a 33%reduction of the heating load.A design EUI of 28 kBtu/sqft was calculated,validating that this design met and exceeded the zero-energy goal.
