Localized treatments using commercial dust and liquid formulations of fipronil against Coptotermes formosanus （Isoptera： Rhinotermitidae） in the laboratory

Use of proper application methods and formulations of termiticides are im- portant to reduce their negative impact to the environment. In this study, we conducted laboratory experiments to determine the effect of localized treatments with commercial dust and liquid formulations of fipronil against Formosan subterranean termites, Coptoter- mes formosanus Shiraki. The test arena consisted of a specially designed 16-chambered structure with a center chamber connected to 5 foraging chambers that themselves were connected to 10 additional foraging chambers. One peripheral chamber received a liquid or dust treatment and termites were released in the center chamber. Results showed that 〉 91% of the termites were dead within the 9-d test period despite the localized treatment of only 1 foraging chamber. Termites that were still alive after 9 d were transferred to an untreated dish and held for 10 more days. The majority of those termites were dead and the rest were moribund on day 19. Regardless of the specific dish treated, both formulations of fipronil were found to be highly efficacious. Termites did not exhibit repellency to either formulation. Our results suggest that localized （or spot） treatment with either commer- cially available dust or liquid formulations of fipronil can be a viable option for control of a termite infestation where complete soil drenching is not desirable.

Disaster Impacts Surveillance from Social Media with Topic Modeling and Feature Extraction: Case of Hurricane Harvey

Twitter can supply useful information on infrastructure impacts to the emergency managers during major disasters,but it is time consuming to filter through many irrelevant *** studies have identified the types of messages that can be found on social media during disasters,but few solutions have been proposed to efficiently extract useful *** present a framework that can be applied in a timely manner to provide disaster impact information sourced from social *** framework is tested on a well-studied and data-rich case of Hurricane *** procedures consist of filtering the raw Twitter data based on keywords,location,and tweet attributes,and then applying the latent Dirichlet allocation(LDA) to separate the tweets from the disaster affected area into categories(topics) useful to emergency *** LDA revealed that out of 24 topics found in the data,nine were directly related to disaster impacts-for example,outages,closures,flooded roads,and damaged *** such as frequent hashtags,mentions,URLs,and useful images were then extracted and *** relevant tweets,along with useful images,were correlated at the county level with flood depth,distributed disaster aid(damage),and population *** correlations were found between the nine relevant topics and population density but not flood depth and damage,suggesting that more research into the suitability of social media data for disaster impacts modeling is *** results from this study provide baseline information for such efforts in the future.

Typical spectra corresponding to vibrational, rotational and gamma-soft caseswere studied within the framework of nucleon-pair shelf model truncated to SD-subspace. It is foundthat the three limiting cases all can be reproduced approximately. The analysis not only shows thatthe IBM indeed has a sound shell model foundation, but also confirms that the truncation schemeadopted in the SD-pair shelf model seems to be reasonable.

Oil in Louisiana's estuarine environments: A development model

Coastal erosion, accelerated by sea level rise, and subsidence are major Louisiana issues. With current sea-level-rise projections, coupled with the state's eroding barrier islands and coastal wetlands, the region's estuarine environments are in jeopardy of being lost, redefined, or permanently altered. As the coast erodes, Louisiana is endangered of losing valuable wetland's habitat. In addition, if the barrier islands disappear, the region's wetland-oriented oil and gas wells and associated infrastructure will be at risk to open Gulf conditions. If this should occur, each well, pipeline, and storage battery represents a potential environmental *** an oil-spill-response perspective, it is much easier to clean a barrier beach than a saltwater or freshwater marsh. The barrier islands represent not only the first line of defense against the combined wind and water forces of a hurricane, but they also serve as pipeline anchor points. More importantly, the islands protect the marshes from an offshore-derived oil spill. Tidal mud flats, shallow grass beds, marshes and swamps are especially difficult to clean. The key, therefore, to an effective oil-spill-response plan is related directly to the viability of these islands, along with detailed pre-existing environmental, ecological, and habitat information. To be useful, this knowledge must be extensive, current, and easily extracted from a comprehensive data base. These data are being developed in Louisiana in the form of an all-inclusive geographic information system (GIS). Data in this system are helping Louisiana manage a vast array of resources. From a historical perspective, analysis of these data can serve as a model on how a deltaic environment can change from hydrocarbon exploration and development. Entering into the 21st century, Louisiana's comprehensive database can help balance oil and gas activity, while maintaining the viability of the state's estuarine environments.

Thermal Annealing and Graphene Modification of Exfoliated Hydrogen Titanate Nanosheets for Enhanced Lithium-ion Intercalation Properties

Hydrogen titanate has been considered as a promising lithium intercalation material due to its unique layered structure. In the present work, we fabricate 2D graphene/hydrogen titanate hybrid nanosheets for application as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries. H2Ti307 nanosheets are synthesized by exfoliation of a layered precursor via interacting bulky tetrabutylammonium （TBA＋） cations, followed by ion exchange with Na＋ ions and washing with water. The as-prepared hydrogen titanate nanosheets are well-dispersed exhibiting ultra-thin thickness with a lateral size up to a few micrometers. The sample is then annealed at 450, 650 Rnd 850 ℃, to optimize its Li＋-intercalation property. Heating at 450 ℃ leads to well-crystallized hydrogen titanate with a trace amount of TiO2. Heating at 650 and 850 ℃ results in mixed sodium titanates, since some sodium ions in the interlayer structure cannot be washed away and become chemically bonded to [TiO6] octahedra at high temperatures. Electrochemical properties of all the four samples are then evaluated by charged/discharged for 100 electrochemical cycles at 0.01-2.5 V vs. Li＋/Li at a specific current of 170 mA g-1. The unannealed hydrogen titanate delivers the highest initial discharge capacity of 130.5 mA h g-l, higher than 124.6 mA h g-1 from hydrogen titanate annealed at 450 ℃, as well as 101.3 and 63.8 mA h g-1 from hydrogen titanate annealed at 650 and 850℃, respectively, due to the high surface area from well-dispersed unannealed nanosheets. However, after 100 electrochemical cycles, well-crystallized hydrogen titanate annealed at 450 ℃ retain the highest charge capacity of 115.2 mA h g-1, corresponding to a capacity retention of 92.5%, while unannealed hydrogen titanate exhibits a final capacity of 72.1 mA h g-1 and a capacity retention of only 55.2%. Bile tolerance of <i>lactobacillus acidophilus</i>la-K as influenced by various pulsed electric field conditions

lactobacillus acidophilus has several health benefits and is used as an adjunct bacterium in the manufacture of cultured dairy foods. Bile tolerance is an important probiotic characteristic. Pulsed electric field (PEF) processing is non-thermal, hurdle technology which comprises of passing fluid foods between two electrodes and subjecting them to pulses of voltage for less than one second. Whether certain mild PEF conditions can enhance bile tolerance of lactobacillus acidophilus is not known. The objective was to study the influence of certain PEF conditions on the, bile tolerance of lactobacillus acidophilus la-K. lactobacillus acidophilus la-K suspended in sterile peptone 0.1% w/v distilled water was treated with pulse widths of 3, 6 and 9 μs, pulse periods of 10,000;20,000 and 30,000 μs and electric field strengths of 5, 15 and 25 kV/cm. The control did not receive any pulsed electric field condition. Bile tolerance was determined hourly for 16 hours. PROC GLM of the Statistical Analysis Systems (SAS) was used for data analysis. Significant differences were determined at P p p p lactobacillus acidophilus la-K subjected to 5 kV/cm were signifycantly the highest while the bile tolerance when subjected to 25 kV/cm was significantly the lowest.
