A dispersed vegetative cover contributes to urban biodiversity:plant diversity across land use types and scale in an Asian city

Urbanization provides both challenges and opportunities for biodiversity conservation,but patterns of urban plant diversity across land uses,especially in Asian countries,remains *** determine these patterns of diversity,woody plants in 174 sample quadrats across various land use types in kyoto City were ***,abundance,and evenness were evaluated at city,land use,and quadrat scales,and biodiversity of different land use types was *** the city level,223 species in 77 families were *** the land use level,residential areas had the highest total biological richness,with moderate to low evenness,while commercial areas exhibited low *** the quadrat level,the low-rise residential area had higher species richness than the other land *** abundance and evenness in quadrats were significantly different across land use types for the canopy layer but not for the *** results provide insights into urban biodiversity design and management by identifying prior land uses for biodiversity improvement and by highlighting the contribution of residential private *** heterogeneity,scale,and multidimensionality should be considered when measuring urban biodiversity.

Aim To study the chemical composition of Opuntia dillenii Haw. Methods Manykinds of chromatogra-phy methods were used in the isolation procedure, while the structures ofisolated compounds were determined on the aids of NMR and MS spectral analysis. Result Three newcompounds, together with 14 known compounds, were isolated form the 80% ethanolic extract of itsstems. Conclusion The three new compounds, opuntioside Ⅰ (2), 4-ethoxyl-6-hydroxymethyl-α-pyrone(3) and kaempferol 7-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl (1→4)-β-D-glucopyranoside (4), were characterized.

In most species,calcium waves in the oocyte are considered common phenomena in the activation of ***,the mechanism of calcium waves has not yet been *** collaborating with biologists studying Caenorhabditis elegans(***),which is widely used as a model organism,we observed that the following requirements must be satisfied to form a useful hypothesis based on calcium waves captured using high-speed in vivo imaging:(1)the ability to obtain an overview of how the calcium waves are propagated and(2)the ability to understand the propagation of waves in a narrow ***,conventional visualization methods cannot satisfy these requirements ***,we propose a visual analytics system that allows users to understand and explore calcium wave images using cross-correlation analysis of the time-series data of the Ca^(2+)fluorescence intensity at each *** interface of this system comprises an overview visualization,a detail visualization,and user interactions to satisfy these requirements and realize exploratory *** views present an overview visualization that displays the clustering results of a directed graph calculated using cross-correlation *** views enable the users to understand the overview of wave propagation,thereby helping users find a region of *** detail visualization shows the relationship between the region of interest and other ***,users can use the proposed system with overview-detail and brush-link exploration to assign meaning to the region of interest and construct a hypothesis for its *** this paper,we demonstrate how the proposed visual analytics approach works and how new hypotheses can be formed using the analysis of *** calcium waves.

The solvent‐free oxidation of benzyl alcohol was studied using supported Pd‐Ni bimetallic *** with monometallic Pd,the addition of Ni to Pd was found to be effective in suppressing the nondesired product toluene,thereby enhancing the selectivity towards *** result was attributed to a dual effect of Ni addition:the weakening of dissociative adsorption of benzyl alcohol and the promotion of oxygen species involved in the oxidation pathway.

To investigate the developmental genetics of genital formation in the carabid beetle Carabus maiyasanus,we compared gene expression patterns among five stages using transcriptomic RNA sequencing data from abdominal segments and genitalia in the third(last)larval instar(including prepupa)and pupal *** identified 18839 genes,of which 10796 were differentially expressed among stages or between *** were relatively few differentially expressed genes(DEGs)between the sexes(3%).The DEGs were clustered into six groups,mainly according to stage-specific expression *** in clusters 1-3 showed high expression levels before pupation and low expression levels during the pupal period,whereas genes in clusters 46 showed high expression levels from the prepupal to the pupal *** related to the initial pupation process and differentiation of genital discs in Drosophila were involved in clusters 4 and 6 and showed low expression levels at early third instar and elevated expression levels from the early prepupal stage,suggesting that the pupation process and genital differentiation started in the prepupal *** 4 and 5 included developmental genes related to organ size control,which may be important in the formation of internal genital structures during the pupal stage.

This research explored how we can improve tsunami evacuation behavior,which has been a major social issue since the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and *** introduce Nige-Tore,a smartphone app for supporting tsunami evacuation drills,which was developed within an interdisciplinary research ***-Tore serves as an effective interface tool that successfully visualizes the dynamic interactions between human actions(evacuation behavior)and natural phenomena(tsunami behavior).Drill participants can check,on their smartphone,the estimated inundation area of the approaching tsunami,along with their own current evacuation *** results of real-world trials using NigeTore show that the app is more powerful than conventional devices and methods that have been used in tsunami evacuation training,such as hazard maps and traditional drills that do not make use of any apps,because Nige-Tore provides an interface that enables commitment and contingency thinking—which at first glance appear to represent different orientations—to not only coexist but to synergize.‘‘Commitment’’(devotion or involvement)refers to the act of immersing oneself in and viewing as absolute one particular scenario or its potential to be actualized,given conditions in which infinite scenarios may be actualized,depending on the interactions between human systems and natural systems.‘‘Contingency’’thinking(an accidental or incidental state)refers to the act of relativizing and separating oneself from any particular scenario or its potential to be actualized,given the same *** synergistic effect of‘‘commitment’’and‘‘contingency’’thinking also expands people’s capacity to cope with unexpected and unforeseen events.

A new N* resonance as a hadronic molecular state

We report our recent work on a hadronic molecule state of the KKN system with I =1/2 and jR = 1/2＋. We assume that the A（1405） resonance and the scalar mesons, f0（980）, ao（980）, are reproduced as quasi-bound states of KN and KK, respectively. Performing non-relativistic three-body calculations with a variational method for this system, we find a quasibound state of the KIlN system around 1910 MeV below the three-body breakup threshold. This state corresponds to a new baryon resonance of N＊ with JP ： 1/2＋. We find also that this resonance has the cluster structure of the two-body bound states keeping their properties as in the isolated two-particle systems. We also briefly discuss another hadronic molecular state composed by two K and one N, which corresponds to a resonance.

AIM: To identify chromosomal translocations specific to gastric cancer (GC), spectral karyotyping (SKY) analysis was performed on established cell lines and cancerous ascitic ***: SKY analysis of 10 established cell lines and seven cancerous ascitic fluid samples identified recurrent chromosomal breakpoints and translocations in GC,several of which involved chromosomal loci of oncogenes or tumor suppressor ***: A total of 630 chromosomal breaks were identified. Chromosome no.8 was the most frequently involved in rearrangements (65 breaks), followed by chromosomes no. 11 (53), no. 1 (49), no. 7 (46), no. 13 (37), no. 3 (36), no. 17 (33), and no. 20 (29). Frequent breakpoints were detected in 8q24.1 (30 breaks), 11q13 (29), 13q14 (16), 20q11.2 (14), 7q32 (13), 17q11.2 (13),18q21 (12), 17q23 (9), 18q11.2 (9). SKY analysis identified a total of 242 chromosomal rearrangements including 190 reciprocal and non-reciprocal translocations. The recurrent combinations of chromosomal bands involved in translocations were 8q24.1 and 13q14 (3 cases), 8q24.1 and 11q13 (3), 11q13 and 17q11.2 (2), and 18q11.2 and 20q11.2 (2). Our study validated the ability of SKY to characterize in detail the chromosomal rearrangements in solid tumors and derived cell lines. Moreover,fluorescence in situ hybridization helped to identify the insertions, translocations, and homogeneously staining regions of MYCand CCND1 gene ***: The non-random co-localization of certain cytogenetic bands suggests the importance of chromosomal translocations in gastric carcinogenesis, by serving as landmarks for the cloning of GC causing genes.
