Perceptive insight into incentive design and sustainability of participatory mangrove management: a case study from the Indian Sundarbans

Incentive design is among the decisive factors behind active community participation and long-term sustainability of participatory forest management. Especially in case of mangroves, where multiple interests apply, it requires a careful integration of several ecological, economic and institutional factors. The primary objective of this paper is to understand the basis of incentive design and make a comprehensive inquiry into the existing incentive mechanism of participatory mangrove management in Indian Sundarbans. The qualitative and in-depth assessment was derived against a conceptual framework that contains three main determinants: (1) resources availability, (2) control mechanism, and (3) perception of end-users. The study deploys the results of various participatory exercises such as structured interviews with forest officials, focus group discussions with 10 Joint Forest Management Committees and semi-structured interviews with 119 mangrove users. In general, we observed an over-cautious, hierarchical and safety-margin-based incentive design with distinct bifurcation of communities over the adequacy and effectiveness of derived benefits. Although, the incentives are diverse and align well with the overall conservation of mangroves, they are considered to be insufficient by nearly half of the mangrove users. The main issues that were observed to hinder effective community participation can be summarized as (1) serious restrictions on access to economically exploitable mangrove products, (2) passive involvement of vulnerable occupational groups, and (3) lack of trust and conflicting interests between the officials and the communities. Although the existing preventive management of mangroves can be justified considering the magnanimity of the Indian Sundarbans, it can severely impair community participation and emerge as a clear threat to future sustainability. Argumentative Conversational Agents for Online Discussions

Artificial Intelligence is revolutionising our communication practices and the ways in which we interact with each other. This revolution does not only impact how we communicate, but it affects the nature of the partners with whom we communicate. Online discussion platforms now allow humans to communicate with artificial agents in the form of socialbots. Such agents have the potential to moderate online discussions and even manipulate and alter public opinions. In this paper, we propose to study this phenomenon using a constructed large-scale agent platform. At the heart of the platform lies an artificial agent that can moderate online discussions using argumentative messages. We investigate the influence of the agent on the evolution of an online debate involving human participants. The agent will dynamically react to their messages by moderating, supporting, or attacking their stances. We conducted two experiments to evaluate the platform while looking at the effects of the conversational agent. The first experiment is a large-scale discussion with 1076 citizens from Afghanistan discussing urban policy-making in the city of Kabul. The goal of the experiment was to increase the citizen involvement in implementing Sustainable Development Goals. The second experiment is a small-scale debate between a group of 16 students about globalisation and taxation in Myanmar. In the first experiment, we found that the agent improved the responsiveness of the participants and increased the number of identified ideas and issues. In the second experiment, we found that the agent polarised the debate by reinforcing the initial stances of the participant.

New method of local adjuvant therapy with bicarbonate Ringer’s solution for tumoral calcinosis: A case report

Flexible spinning is a new type of spinning process where spin-forming isperformed without using a mandrel. Combining shearing and rolling processes, the calculationformulas of the spinning forces in flexible spinning of cones is presented. The effects of the mainprocessing parameters, such as gripping force G applied to the blank by the inner roller, the feedrate of rollers f and the roundness radius of outer roller r_o, on the spinning forces are analyzedexperimentally and theoretically.

Robotization in fruit grading system

A grading robot system, which automatically provides fruits from containers and inspects all sides of the fruits was developed. The robot system consists of two fruit providing robots and a grading robot. Both robots had 3 DOF Cartesian coordinate manipulators, and 12 suction pads as end-effectors for transporting fruits. The grading robot had 12 color TV cameras, and 28 lighting devices as a machine vision system. The grading robot sucked 12 fruits up at a time and 12 bottom images of all the fruits were acquired during the manipulator moving from a halfway stage to carriers on a conveyor line. Before releasing the fruits to the carriers, 4 side images of each fruit were acquired by rotating the suction pads for 270°. The stroke of the manipulators was about 1.2 m and it took about 4.3 s to move back to the initial position that meant that this robot could grade three fruits per second. This grading robot system made following effects: （1） Labor substitution, （2） Objective grading operation without human subjective judgment, （3） Data accumulation on fruit grading for traceability and farming guidance to producer.

Semi-conductive properties of melanization of chromate zinc plates

The anodic polarization curves of chromate zinc plates were studied under the condition of with and without illumination. It is found that the chromate film of zinc plate is characterized by an n type semi conductive property. The illumination on the surface and the addition of Pb in the surface raises the anodic photocurrent and plays a part of the n type property in the film. Contrarily, Ag in the film plays a part of the p type dopant. The effects of quantitative Pb 2+ and Ag + in bath on the melanization(black patina) of zinc plate after chromate treatment also has been studied by comparing the lightness differences Δ L by means of a whiteness meter. It is found that the lightness decreasing process (the melanization rate) is consistent with the Wagner equation Δ L =kt 1/2 +C, and that Pb in the film increases k , on the other hand, Ag in the film decreases k of the melanizing rate.[

In-situ observation of twinning and detwinning in AZ31 alloy

Twinning and detwinning behavior of a commercial AZ31 magnesium alloy during cyclic compression–tension deformation with a total strain amplitude of 4%(±2%) was evaluated using the complementary techniques of in-situ neutron diffraction, identical area electron backscatter diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. In-situ neutron diffraction demonstrates that the compressive deformation was dominated by twin nucleation, twin growth, and basal slip, while detwinning dominated the unloading of compressive stresses and subsequent tension stage. With increasing number of cycles from one to eight: the volume fraction of twins at-2% strain gradually increased from 26.3% to 43.5%;the residual twins were present after 2% tension stage and their volume fraction increased from zero to 3.7% as well as a significant increase in their number;and the twinning spread from coarse grains to fine grains involving more grains for twinning. The increase in volume fraction and number of residual twins led to a transition from twin nucleation to twin growth, resulting in a decrease in yield strength of compression deformation with increasing cycles. A large number of-component dislocations observed in twins and the detwinned regions were attributed to the dislocation transmutation during the twinning and detwinning. The accumulation of barriers including twin boundaries and various types of dislocations enhanced the interactions of migrating twin boundary with these barriers during twinning and detwinning, which is considered to be the origin for increasing the work hardening rate in cyclic deformation of the AZ31 alloy.
