Objective: To investigate the relationships between depressive mood, bonding failure, and abusive parenting. Method: We distributed questionnaires to 1198 mothers attending a three-month postnatal health check-up in rural areas in Japan. The questionnaires assessed these three variables along with demographics. We evaluated the causal relationships by comparing different structural equation models to the data. Results: Although all the models fit the data well, the best Akaike Information Criterion was obtained from a model where both depressive mood and bonding failure predict abusive parenting, but depressive mood and bonding failure do not predict each other directly. The determinant coefficient of child abuse in the final model was 0.13. Discussion: We found depressive mood and bonding failure during postpartum period impacted negatively on mother’s parenting behaviour. Because only 13% of the variance of abusive parenting was explainable by this model, further study should be needed to identify other risk factors of child abuse. Similarly, midwives and public health nurse in community should pay attention to not only depression but also bonding failure to prevent child abuse.

Rainfall and Runoff Observations in the Subtropical Forest of Okinawa Island, Japan

We set up two experimental catchments to provide an improved understanding of hydrological processes in a subtropical forested area in the northern part of Okinawa Island, Japan. We calculated runoff using water level data (recorded by a pressure-type water level gauge installed in a box culvert) and a discharge rating curve (derived from in situ observations). Water balance calculations for 2010 showed that the rainfall, runoff and evapotranspiration losses (= rainfall – runoff) were 3403.6 mm, 2285.7 mm and 1117.4 mm, respectively. This result was in agreement with previous results from other forested experimental catchments in this region. Direct runoff, as a proportion of event total rainfall, can be expressed by the empirical equation (Qdirect = 0.0048, Pevent 1.7971, R2 = 0.9599). When Pevent was 100 mm or less, the ratios of Qdirect to Pevent were less than 15% in general. When Pevent exceeded 100 mm, the ratios were 20% - 30%.

Prediction of the Site Index for a Subtropical Broad-Leaved Forest on Okinawa Island Using Topographic Factor

Subtropical “Yambaru” forest, situated in the northern part of Okinawa Island of Japan, has a precious ecosystem inhabited by many endemic species. However, this region is also the center for forestry on Okinawa. Therefore, sustainable forestry activities should take into consideration the natural environment. To contribute to sustainable forest management in the region, we conducted prediction of the site index at fine-scale resolution by using multiple regression analysis with easily calculated topographic factors. For the multiple regression analysis with site index as a dependent variable, three topographic factors (the effective relief, openness, and elevation) were adopted as independent variables. Approximately 68% of the variance was explained, and the effective relief was the variable with the greatest influence. This means that it is possible to predict forest productivity at a finer scale of resolution than ever before. For sustainable forest management of sites where environmental conservation and forestry are conflicting, it is useful to estimate the site index at the finest scale of resolution practically available in the field. It might be possible to improve estimation accuracy by examining further environmental factors in the future.

＜正＞Cs2TCNQ3 crystallizes into a columnar structure consisting of a periodic stack of TCNQ0/TCNQ/TCNCT, resulting in a semiconductor with the lowest optical energy gap of 0.3 eV [1]. The radicals TCNQ are dimerized, so that the uppermost valence band is formed by the π* orbit of spin singlet. Since the on-site repulsion energy U ≈ 1.2 eV of the π* electrons is higher than the optical energy gap, Cs2TCNQ3 may be regarded as a charge-transfer semiconductor of the 1/3-filled Hubbard system. It has been reported that this material undergoes the phase transition to a metallic state at around 3 GPa [2], although the optical energy gap remains unclosed [1]. In the present work, to obtain information about the mechanism of this semiconductor-to-metal transition, we measure the pressure dependence of the infrared molecular vibration. Figure 1 shows the absorption spectra in the C-CN stretching region at several pressures. The features at 1205 and 1211 cm-1 at the ambient pressure arise from neutral and radical molecules, respectively, whereas the one at 1183 cm-1 is the electron-molecular-vibration （e-mv） coupled mode. The former two features show a blue-shift with increasing pressure, while increasing their energy spacing. At around 3.6 GPa they abruptly displace toward each other about half the way of the energy spacing, showing that the π* electrons delocalize significantly from radical to neutral molecules. Evidently this is related to the high electric conductivity at high pressures. It is noteworthy that in the high-pressure phase radical-like and neutral-like molecules still coexist spectroscopically, and thus the π* electrons are not completely delocalized. The frequency, on the other hand, of the e-mv mode remains almost unchanged at low pressures. The e-mv mode disappears above 3.6 GPa, in coincidence with the disappearance of the electronic band S1, which is the counterpart of the e-mv mode [1].

The objective of this study was to explore the relationship of perceived health status and Breslow’s seven health Practices(7 - 8 hours of sleep per night, maintaining a healthy weight, moderate or no alcohol intake, regular physical activity, no eating between meals, eating breakfast, and having never smoked cigarettes) in adult residents in kumamoto prefecture Japan. We used 2011 data from the “Health Japan 21” program in kumamoto prefecture, a study consisting of 2519 adults aged from 20 - 74 years. Data for the study were gathered by questionnaire. The questionnaire was divided into following sections: perceived health status, seven health practices, life satisfaction, depression, social network, and demographic variables. We found that those groups engaged in more than four health practices had higher scores for perceived health status than those groups with less than four. Using Pearson’s correlation coefficient, positive correlations were found between perceived health status and health practices (r = 0.229, p – 0.058, p – 0.093, p– 0.109, p < 0.001). Furthermore, we clarified the differences in perceived health status by age and gender. The data from multiple regression analysis show an association between level of perceived health status and life satisfaction, the seven health practices, employment, age, depression, and social network. Our findings demonstrate a relationship between perceived health status and the seven health practices, and can be used to encourage healthier practices to enhance perceived health status and life satisfaction in community health care work.
