Visual outcomes after three different surgical procedures for correction of refractive error in patients with thin corneas

AIM:To investigate and compare the visual and refractive outcomes of small incision lenticule extraction(SMILE),laser assisted sub-epithelial keratomileusis(LASEK),and LASEK combined with corneal collagen cross-linking(LASEKCXL)surgery in patients with less than 500μm of central corneal thickness(CCT).METHODS:The retrospective medical records review was conducted on the patients with CCT less than 500μm treated with SMILE,LASEK,and *** was a total of 172 eyes,76 eyes were in the SMILE group,53 eyes in the LASEK group,and 43 eyes in the LASEK-CXL *** distance visual acuity(UDVA),spherical equivalent refraction(SE),and corneal haze were followed up in the three groups for 12 ***:At 12 mo postoperatively,there were no statistically significant differences in UDVA and in the absolute value of SE between the three *** predictability within±0.50 D in the SMILE group(85.5%)was significantly higher than in both the LASEK group(64.2%,P<0.01)and the LASEK-CXL group(69.8%,P=0.04).The efficacy index and safety index were not significantly different among the three *** haze at 12 mo postoperatively was higher in the LASEK-CXL group(27.9%)than in the SMILE group(2.6%,P<0.01)and in the LASEK group(7.5%,P<0.01).CONCLUSION:In patients with CCT less than 500μm,SMILE,LASEK,and LASEK-CXL appear to be effective for myopic *** them,SMILE surgery shows the highest predictability.

Oxidative stress has been strongly related with Alzheimer disease pathogenesis. We determined the effects of watermelon powder (WMP) and Lactococcus lactis subsp lactis (LAL) supplementation on the generated Aβ42-induced phenotypes in a Drosophila melanogaster model of AD. Enhanced Aβ42 expression in D. melanogaster neurons can diminish lifespan and flight ability. We have observed longevity methods to assay the effects of WMP and LAL on D. melanogaster survival. Furthermore, flies expressing Aβ42 in their body fed WMP and LAL had up to 90 days, or 35% longer median lifespan than those fed a control diet. In addition, synergistic effect of WMP and LAL improved Aβ42-induced flight impairments in the Drosophila wing tissues. Our microscope experiments revealed that individuals fed synergistic effect of WMP and LAL had ameliorated Aβ42 expression as well as increment of flight ability than Aβ42-induced flies. We propose that WMP is typically rich in L-citrulline and LAL, rich in naturally occurring probiotics and antioxidants, and that it promotes the survival of neurons in brain and wing muscle tissues with increased levels of Aβ42 via a protective cell survival mechanism.

Oxidative stress has been strongly related with Parkinson disease (PD) and Alzheimer disease pathogenesis. We determined the effects of Lactococcus lactis (LAL) supplementation on the generated loss-of-function mutants of PINK1 B9, an AR-JP-linked gene and Aβ42 induced phenotypes in a Drosophila melanogaster model of PD/AD. Enhanced mutant PINK1 B9 and Aβ42 expression in D. melanogaster dopaminergic (DA) neurons can curtail lifespan, flight muscle accompanied by locomotive defects and we have observed longevity methods to assay the effects of LAL on D. melanogaster survival. Furthermore, flies expressing mutant PINK1 B9 and Aβ42 in their brain fed LAL had up to the two weeks, or 25%, greater median lifespan than those fed a standard sucrose diet. In addition, LAL improved mutant PINK1 B9 and Aβ42-induced flight impairments in the Drosophila wing. Our microscopy analyses revealed that individuals fed LAL had improved atypical ommatidia as well as an increased thirteen percentage of flight ability than those fed a control diet. We propose that LAL, rich in naturally occurring probiotics and antioxidants, promotes the survival of neurons in brain and wing muscle tissues with increased levels of mutant PINK1 B9 and Aβ42 via a protective cell survival mechanism.

Two new species of the genus Eumyllocerus Sharp, 1896, of the subfamily Entiminae Schoenherr, 1823, are described from China. Eumyllocerus longisetus sp. n. may be distinguished from other species of the genus by its long bristle-like, erect setae on the intervals, each of which is longer than the width of the second interval, the setae arrangedin double rows, and its shell-like, shiny, dense, metallic green scales. Eumyllocerus rotundicorpus sp. n. may be distinguished from any other Eumyllocerus species by its oval and inflated elytral shape, short stout metepisternum, small humeri, elytral setae shorter than 0.5 times the width of the second interval, the setae arranged in double rows, and its golden copper and pearl gray scales. The taxonomy of the genus is discussed. The two new species are described and habitus photographs and figures of diagnostic characters are provided. The type specimens of the new species are deposited in the Institute of Zoology, Chinese academy of Sciences, Beijing, China (holotype and paratypes) and the korean Entomological Institute, Korea University, Seoul, Korea (paratypes).

The purpose of this paper was to examine the relationship between the state and eminent monks in medieval Korea （918-1392） on the basis of various primary sources and to highlight the need of the re-examination of the nature of korean Buddhism, and by extension, that of East Asian Buddhism. To this end, this research examines the position of Buddhism, the state Buddhist policies, the roles of monks in response to the policies, and the identity of monks in medieval Korea. The conclusion is that medieval Korea took carrot-and-stick approach to Buddhism and in response, playing as political advisors, subjects to the ruler, thaumaturgies, entrepreneurs, and even warriors, power-oriented monks ingratiated themselves with the state Buddhist policies for their sustenance on practical considerations, often violating the basic teachings of the Buddha and creating issues regarding their identity as monks. This korean tradition in a larger part appears to be a product of the Sinicized Buddhism, thus highlighting the need of further in-depth research on the nature of korean Buddhism in particular and that of East Asian Buddhism in general.

Intravenous Suitability Studies of Commonly Used Oxacillin Sodium Solutions in the Accufuser^(■) Infusion Device

Our study compares two commonly used solutions of oxacillin sodium, 5.0 mg/mL in either 0.9% sodium chloride (NS) or 5% dextrose water (D5W), for their continued suitability for IV usage, and stability of active compound over time, when stored at two different controlled temperatures for six weeks. Both solutions were stored in an intravenous infusion device commercially available as Accufuser? and kept at a continuously maintained temperature of either 4 ± 2?C (CT) or 25 ± 2?C (RT). Suitability for IV administration was assessed by measuring changes in macrographical transparency and pH over time, and drug stability was assessed by measuring changes in oxacillin concentration over time using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). After 6 weeks, concentrations of oxacillin were unchanged in the CT solutions, while both RT solutions showed significant decreases in the concentration of oxacillin after only two weeks. Final concentration compared to starting concentrations after 6 weeks at RT, were 36.57% in NS, while virtually no oxacillin was detectable in D5W. Also pH measurements showed a slight decrement at 2 weeks with RT, and at 6 weeks, there was a significant change in pH in both NS and D5W at RT. There was no significant change in color, transparency or appearance after 6 weeks in any of the oxacillin solutions stored in the Accufuser? infusion device. In summary, two commonly used IV solutions for oxacillin administration(5 mg/mL in NS or D5W) stored ready to use in the Accufuser? showed significant changes over time when maintained at RT, that would make the solutions inappropriate for therapeutic use. Both solutions when maintained in CT were not significantly altered and continued to be appropriate in pH and drug concentration for IV therapy. This suggests that ready-to-use solutions of oxacillin sodium in the Accufuser? infusion device can be kept at CT for up to 6 weeks safely but should not be stored at RT due to loss of potency and changes in
