Objective: This survey aims to identify the levels of knowledge and attitudes among nurses regarding cancer pain management. Methods: This cross-sectional survey was undertaken at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, between September 4 and September 27, 2015. The survey instrument was a pre-set questionnaire comprising 39 closed-ended format questions. Participants were asked questions to assess their knowledge and attitudes about cancer pain management and adherence to frequent misconceptions regarding opioid therapy. The chi-square test was used to compare differences between variables. Results: One hundred twenty-eight questionnaires were completed and analyzed. A mean sample score of 41.3% was achieved on pain-related knowledge questions. The average score on all 39 questions was 16.1 ± 4.6 (range, 0 - 24). Nurses on the male medical ward were most knowledgeable compared with those on other wards (p p p p p = 0.002). Conclusion: Optimization of inpatient supportive procedures should be a specific task at King Abdulaziz University Hospital until an oncology unit with nurses specialized in cancer care is established.

Background: Advanced maternal age, over 35 years, is a well-known risk factor for poor pregnancy outcomes. It is commonly associated with various pregnancy complications, such as spontaneous miscarriage, preeclampsia/ toxemia, gestational diabetes mellitus, preterm labor, stillbirth, chromosomal abnormalities, and cesarean delivery. Objectives: This study assessed obstetric and neonatal complications associated with advanced maternal age. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 199 pregnant women over 35 years old at King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from January to June 2022. We gathered data on age, nationality, number of antenatal visits, results of ultrasound scans for dating and viability, nuchal translucency and anatomy surveys, medications and multivitamins taken during pregnancy, smoking status, pregnancy, and fetal complications, and mode of delivery. Results: The prevalence of obstetric complications was 71.4% (preeclampsia/toxemia, 4.5%;antepartum hemorrhage, 4%;postpartum hemorrhage, 1%;and gestational diabetes, 23.1%). The most frequent complication was preterm labor between 34 and 36 weeks (48%), and only 12.6% of all deliveries were associated with fetal and neonatal complications such as congenital anomalies and neonatal jaundice. The prevalence of anemia during pregnancy was 10.1%, 21.1%, and 28.6% in the first, second, and third trimesters, respectively, and pregnancies complicated with antepartum or postpartum hemorrhage were associated with higher rates of anemia in the second trimester. A significant relationship was found between mean maternal age (38.84 ± 2.75 years) and the development of maternal complications (p < 0.05). Newborns with neonatal complications were much more likely to be born to mothers with a history of antepartum hemorrhage and anemia in the second trimester. Conclusion: Our findings confirm that pregnancy at an advanced maternal age is associated with increased overall maternal complications. The most frequent complication was preterm labor

Different types of collaborative content applications, such as blogs and wikis, are used by people of all ages, supporting the collaborative creation and sharing of knowledge among young and old, students and experts, inside and outside organizations and educational institutions. This research investigates the effects of Web 2.0 and social networks on students’ performance in online education which uses networking as an adjunct mode for enhancing traditional education in King Abdulaziz University.

Conditions Associated with Intrauterine Fetal Demise (IUFD) in Pregnant Women at King Abdulaziz University (KAUH). A Five-Year Experience

Background: Intrauterine fetal demise is the death of the fetus after twenty week of gestation but before the onset of labor. In more than 50% of cases, the etiology of antepartum fetal death is not known or cannot be determined. Several factors attributed to the risk of IUFD. This study aimed to determine the incidence of IUFD, as well as associated conditions. Method: This retrospective study enrolled all pregnant women who attending at KAUH between 2011 and 2015. Results: During the last five years 248 verified IUFD cases were reported, the mean age was 30.59. Saudi nationality represented by 27 %. PET was represented 17.7% and congenital malformation was represented by 7.3% as risk factors. Regarding the mode of delivery SVD was 58.9% followed by CS 28.6. Conclusion: Stillbirth is an unfavorable event, there are several factors (maternal, fetal & placenta) associated with IUFD. Providing good level of antenatal care helped in reducing IUFD incidence.

Pattern of Thyroid Cancer at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah: A 10-Year Retrospective Study

Background and objective: Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy. This report aims to describe the pattern of thyroid cancer presentations at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah. Methods: This was a retrospect chart review of all thyroid cancer cases diagnosed between 2001 and 2010 at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah. We documented patients’ demographic and clinical data, including age at diagnosis, tumor type and size, extrathyroidal extension, and metastasis. Results: A total of 114 thyroid cancer cases were diagnosed from 2001 through 2010. Females comprise the majority of cases (female to male ratio of 4:1). The mean ages of patients diagnosed with different thyroid cancers were: papillary thyroid cancer, 39.6 years;follicular thyroid cancer, 43.2 years;medullary thyroid cancer, 55.8 years;and anaplastic thyroid cancer, 46.0 years. Papillary thyroid cancer was diagnosed in 88 cases (77%), follicular thyroid cancer in 19 cases (17%), medullary thyroid cancer in 5 cases (4%), and anaplastic thyroid cancer in 2 cases (2%). Conclusion: Thyroid cancers are more common among females. The disease is diagnosed at a relatively young age among our patients (40 years). Papillary thyroid cancer is the most common type of thyroid cancer.

Background: Cancer diagnosis disclosure is still a challenge for patients and health care providers in Saudi Arabia which may affect the patient’s ability to cope with a cancer diagnosis and it is subsequent treatments. Aim: This study is aimed to assess the effect of cancer diagnosis disclosure on patient’s coping self-efficacy at king Abdul-Aziz university Hospital, KSA-Jeddah. Methods: The data collected through a structured interview guided by coping Self-efficacy Scale (CSE) to measure the patients’ ability to perceive and cope effectively with their new diagnosis and the subsequent events related to it. It consists of 26 items subdivided into three factors. Distributed to adult patients above 18 years old who is newly diagnosed with cancer and willing to participate. Results: Among 102 participants enrolled in this study the relationship between age, marital status, educational level, income, and CSE showed no significant relationship, where p-value was higher than 0.05. Also, the relationship between diagnosis time and CSE show no significant relationship, where p-value was higher than 0.05, as no differences in CSE among patients who were diagnosed with cancer within two weeks, one month, one year ago, two years ago of interviewing them. The overall mean for their coping self-efficacy was moderate coping self-efficacy (3.86 ± 0.552). Conclusion: This study showed that the majority of cancer patients in this study had moderate coping self-efficacy and this could be explained by the strong faith, ideal living environment which involves family support, groups’ participation, reinforcement and daily activities which helped them to control their emotions and their abilities for coping with their experience of cancer diagnosis disclosure.

INTRODUCTION The past two decades have witnessed one of the most contentious scientific debates in the field of temperature management after cardiac arrest in adults.It started in 2002,following the publication of two groundbreaking trials showing lower mortality rates and improved neurologic recovery with the use of active cooling.[1,2]International recommendations advocate active cooling in the range of 32–34℃for comatose survivors of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA).[3,4]The year2013 marked the tipping point with the release of the TTM 1 trial.

The interaction of cationic gemini surfactants(alkanediyl-α,ω-bis(alkyl dimethylammonium bromide)) with an antipsychotic drug(chlorpromazine hydrochloride(CPZ)) has been investigated. Various micellar and interfacial parameters have been deliberated by surface tension measurement to report the nature of interactions between drug and novel surfactant mixtures. The behavior of mixed systems, their compositions and activities of components have been analyzed in the light of Rubingh's theory. The results indicate synergism in the binary mixtures.The binding study between CPZ and surfactants has been done by spectroscopic techniques such as UV–visible and fluorescence. The results are discussed in the light of the use of gemini surfactants as promising drug delivery agents for phenothiazine drugs, and hence, improve their bioavailability.

Cancer frequently develops resistance to the majority of chemotherapy treatments.This study aimed to examine the synergistic cytotoxic and antitumor effects of SGLT2 inhibitors,specifically Canagliflozin(CAN),Dapagliflozin(DAP),Empagliflozin(EMP),and Doxorubicin(DOX),using in vitro experimentation.The precise combination of CAN+DOX has been found to greatly enhance the cytotoxic effects of doxorubicin(DOX)in MCF-7 cells.Interestingly,it was shown that cancer cells exhibit an increased demand for glucose and ATP in order to support their growth.Notably,when these medications were combined with DOX,there was a considerable inhibition of glucose consumption,as well as reductions in intracellular ATP and lactate levels.Moreover,this effect was found to be dependent on the dosages of the drugs.In addition to effectively inhibiting the cell cycle,the combination of CAN+DOX induces substantial modifications in both cell cycle and apoptotic gene expression.This work represents the initial report on the beneficial impact of SGLT2 inhibitor medications,namely CAN,DAP,and EMP,on the responsiveness to the anticancer properties of DOX.The underlying molecular mechanisms potentially involve the suppression of the function of SGLT2.
