The Jurassic fossil wood diversity from western Liaoning,NE China

Western Liaoning is a unique region in China that bears diverse types of Jurassic plants, including leaves, fern rhizomes,and wood, providing significant proxy for vegetation and palaeoenvironment reconstruction of the well-known Yanliao Flora in East asia. In particular, the silicified wood is very abundant in the fossil Lagerst?tte of the Jurassic Tiaojishan Formation in Beipiao, western Liaoning. Previous and recent systematic investigations documented a high diversity of the Jurassic wood assemblages. These assemblages are dominated by conifers, followed by cycads and *** total, about 30 species belonging to 21 genera of fossil wood have been recorded so far, which are represented by Cycadopsida, Ginkgopsida, Coniferopsida, and Gymnospermae incertae sedis. The evolutionary implications of several distinctive fossil wood taxa as well as palaeoclimate implications are summarized based on their anatomical structures and growth ring patterns. This work approaches the vegetation development and evolutionary significances of the wood taxa and their relatives, and provides clues for the further understanding of the diversity of the Jurassic Yanliao Flora in East asia.

A lot of well-preserved plants from the Linxi Formation are collected in the Soron area,Inner Mongolia,consisting of 34 species of 16 genera. They are Late Permian in age. The flora is characterized by a lot of Angaran plants,such as Paracalamites,Comia,Rhachiphyllum,Iniopteris,Rufloria,etc. Some Cathaysian elements,such as Lobatannularia lingulata,L. multifolia,Fascipteris Cathaysiantus,F. densata,Taeniopteris szei,Cladophlebis liulinensis and C. permica,are also mixed within the present flora. This indicates that the Soron of Inner Mongolia was located in the sector between the Angaran and Cathysian floristic provinces in Lopingian. It is beneficial for depicting the location and the evolution of the Solenker--Xar Moron suture zone in the phytogeographic view. The transmigration of tropical and subtropical Cathaysian plants to the north indicates that the Paleoasian Ocean was closed during the late Permian along the suture zone.

The Lower Cretaceous Guantou Formation is known as an important horizon for the Cretaceous petrified woods in southern China. Though abundant Cretaceous wood remains have been found in this formation, only one species has been recognized. A new coniferous wood, Brachyoxylon zhejiangense sp. nov. is described from the Lower Cretaceous Guantou Formation in Xinchang of Zhejiang Province, southeastern China. Anatomically, the new species is characterized by obscure annual rings, mixed type of radial pitting, araucarioid cross-field pits and uniseriate xylem rays. The finding of Brachyoxylon zhejiangense sp. nov. represents the first well-defined record of Brachyoxylon in southeastern China, and enriches the diversity of the Early Cretaceous petrified wood in southern China. Additionally, the new finding sheds new light on further understanding the floral composition, especially the forest vegetation type of the southern phytoprovince in the late Early Cretaceous. Diverse compressed leaf fossils of Cheirolepidiaceae have been described from the Guantou Formation in the fossil locality of the present petrified wood. The co-occurrence of Brachyoxylon zhejiangense sp. nov. and those cheirolepidiaceous leaf fossils provide additional evidences to support that Brachyoxylon may be systematically related to the Cheirolepidiaceae.

“International Symposium on Cretaceous biota and the K-Pg boundary and the 2^nd Jiayin Forum on Fossil Protection”, co-hosted by the key-lab of evolution of past life in northeast asia, Ministry of Natural Resources (EPLNEA, MNRC), key-lab for evolution of past life and environment in northeast asia, Ministry of Education, China (EPLENEA, MOEC), and Palaeontological Society of China (PSC), was successfully held in Jiayin County of Heilongjiang Province, China, during Aug.18-21, 2019. The symposium mainly aimed to introduce the recent advances on the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary made by the geoscientists from China and related countries, and to exchange the experiences and ideas on this topics, which is beneficial for the establishing the national standard of the K-Pg boundary in China based on the research projects “ Research on the K-Pg boundary of China” carried out by the EPLNEA, and MNRC.

Objective The Jehol Biota, a world-famous Early Cretaceous fossil Lagersttate characterized by the traditional Eosestheria-Ephemeropsis-Lycoptera （EEL） assemblage, has a wide distribution over most parts of northem China, the coastal area of southeastem China, southeastem Mongolia, Transbaikalian area of Russia, Korea and Japan （Shao et al., 2017）. The Baishan Basin, situated in southeastern Jilin is one of the easternmost Jehol Biota localities in China. Until now, the fossils here belonging to Jehol Biota have not yet been reported except for few fossils listed in geological survey reports. The fossil collections here are noteworthy in that they are the first fossil record documented from the Early Cretaceous Yingzuilazi Formation of the Baishan Basin, southeastern Jilin and the easternmost locality of Jehol Biota, China. This finding is important to explore the distribution, evolution and biodiversity of the Jehol Biota and even the Late Mesozoic terrestrial ecosystem, as well as for the division and correlation of the Late Mesozoic terrestrial strata.

In recent years, an increasing number of plant fossil leaves and petrified woods have been discovered from the Middle Jurassic Wanbao Formation in Moguqi Town of Inner Mongolia, NE China. Here, we describe a new species of Coniopteris moguqiensis sp. nov. preserved as a fragment with fertile and sterile pinnules. The sterile ultimate pinnules are elongate ovate with sphenopteriod type venation, and fertile pinnules are usually isolated, bipinnate at least with the sorus apical, elliptical, 1 mm in diameter;sporangia are almost globular, 100-150 μm in diameter, and the annulus is vertical. In situ spores are rounded-triangular in polar view, 25-30 μm in diameter with sides straight and slightly convex;trilete, laesurae are thin and slightly straight;the exine surface is usually psilate under the light microscope but finely reticuloid sculptured on the proximal view under a scanning electronic microscope. The fern genus Coniopteris usually suggests a warm and humid environment, which is consistent with the palaeoclimatic conditions of petrified wood and megafossil plants. The new discovery further supplements the floral composition of the Wanbao Formation, providing new material for understanding the evolutionary trend and classification of Coniopteris.

Some well-preserved conifer leafy shoots and female cones from the Lower Cretaceous Changcai For- mation near Fudong of Helong, eastern Jilin, northeast China are studied. Based on gross morphological and cuticular study, a new species, Elatides helongensis Sun et Zhao （ sp. nov. ） is described systematically. The new species is characterized by persistent, linear or slightly falcate leaves with obtusely acute apex, attached helically on the shoots. Female cones of the new species are terminal and oval, composed of persistent helically- arranged rhomboidal scales and erect seeds. One erect seed is growing on each scale. Leaf cuticles are hyposto- matic. Monocylic stomata are ellipse, composed of 2 sunken guard ceils and 4-8 subsidiary cells. Moreover, the cuticles of a young female cone of Pityostrobus yingchengensis Yang are described for the first time.
