optical networks are evolving toward ultrawide bandwidth and autonomous operation. In this scenario, it is crucial to accurately model and control optical power evolutions(OPEs) through optical amplifiers(OAs), as they directly affect the signal-to-noise ratio and fiber nonlinearities. However, a fundamental contradiction arises between the complex physical phenomena in optical transmission and the required precision in network control. Traditional theoretical methods underperform due to ideal assumptions, while data-driven approaches entail exorbitant costs associated with acquiring massive amounts of data to achieve the desired level of accuracy. In this work, we propose a Bayesian inference framework(BIF) to construct the digital twin of OAs and control OPE in a data-efficient manner. Only the informative data are collected to balance the exploration and exploitation of the data space, thus enabling efficient autonomous-driving optical networks(ADONs). Simulations and experiments demonstrate that the BIF can reduce the data size for modeling erbium-doped fiber amplifiers by 80% and Raman amplifiers by 60%. Within 30 iterations, the optimal controlling performance can be achieved to realize target signal/gain profiles in links with different types of OAs. The results show that the BIF paves the way to accurately model and control OPE for future ADONs.

We propose a silicon polarization-diversity coherent receiver for wavelength-multiplexing transmission without using the large-footprint arrayed waveguide grating(AWG).We have integrated our proposed coherent receiver on the silicon-on-insulator(SOI) platform for high-capacity *** the proposed coherent receiver,high-frequency photocurrent signals from other wavelengths are suppressed by electrical low-pass ***,the signal-signal beat interference(SSBI) generated from each wavelength is eliminated by the balanced *** two features lend to the proposed coherent receiver being free of the mm-scale *** have demonstrated our proposed coherent receiver to detect a 1.12-Tb/s wavelength-division-multiplexed and polarization-division-multiplexed 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation(PDM-16-QAM) *** compact footprint of the silicon chip promises small-form-factor receivers for future ultra-high-capacity coherent communication systems that require a high integration level and low fabrication cost.

Analog feature extraction(AFE)is an appealing strategy for low-latency and efficient cognitive sensing systems since key features are much sparser than the Nyquist-sampled ***,applying AFE to broadband radio-frequency(RF)scenarios is challenging due to the bandwidth and programmability bottlenecks of analog electronic ***,we introduce a photonics-based scheme that extracts spatiotemporal features from broadband RF signals in the analog *** feature extractor structure inspired by convolutional neural networks is implemented on integrated photonic circuits to process RF signals from multiple antennas,extracting valid features from both temporal and spatial *** of the tunability of the photonic devices,the photonic spatiotemporal feature extractor is trainable,which enhances the validity of the extracted ***,a digital-analog-hybrid transfer learning method is proposed for the effective and low-cost training of the photonic feature *** validate our scheme,we demonstrate a radar target recognition task with a 4-GHz instantaneous *** results indicate that the photonic analog feature extractor tackles broadband RF signals and reduces the sampling rate of analog-to-digital converters to 1/4 of the Nyquist sampling while maintaining a high target recognition accuracy of 97.5%.Our scheme offers a promising path for exploiting the AFE strategy in the realm of cognitive RF sensing,with the potential to contribute to the efficient signal processing involved in applications such as autonomous driving,robotics,and smart factories.

Polarization holography has been extensively applied in many fields, such as optical science, metrology, and biochemistry, due to its property of polarization modulation. However, the modulated polarization state of diffracted light corresponds strictly to that of incident light one by one. Here, a kind of tunable polarization holographic grating has been designed in terms of Jones matrices, and intensity-based polarization manipulation has been realized experimentally. The proposed tunable polarization holographic grating is recorded on an azobenzene liquid-crystalline film by a pair of coherent light beams with orthogonal polarization states and asymmetrically controlled intensities. It is found that the diffracted light can be actively manipulated from linearly to circularly polarized based on the light intensity of the recording holographic field when the polarization state of incident light keeps constant. Our work could enrich the field of light manipulation and holography.

Quantum networks provide opportunities and challenges across a range of intellectual and technical frontiers,including quantum computation,communication,and *** traditional communication networks,quantum networks utilize quantum bits rather than classical bits to store and transmit *** key distribution(QKD)relying on the principles of quantum mechanics is a key component in quantum networks and enables two parties to produce a shared random secret key,thereby ensuring the security of data *** this work,we propose a cost-effective quantum downstream access network structure in which each user can get their corresponding key information through terminal *** on this structure,we demonstrate the first four-end-users quantum downstream access network in continuous variable QKD with a local local *** contrast to point-to-point continuous variable QKD,the network architecture reevaluates the security of each user and accounts for it accordingly,and each user has a lower tolerance for excess noise as the overall network expands with more ***,the feasibility of the experiment is based on the analysis of the theoretical model,noise analysis,and multiple techniques such as the particle filter and adaptive equalization algorithm used to suppress excess *** results show that each user can get a low level of excess noise and can achieve secret key rates of 546 kbps,535 kbps,522.5 kbps,and 512.5 kbps under a transmission distance of 10 km,respectively,with the finite-size block of 1×10^(8).This not only verifies the good performance but also provides the foundation for the future multi-user quantum downstream access networks.

Vectorial beams have attracted great interest due to their broad applications in optical micromanipulation,optical imaging,optical micromachining,and optical *** frequency conversion is an effective technique to expand the frequency range of the vectorial ***,the scheme of existing methods to generate vector beams of the second harmonic(SH)lacks compactness in the ***,we introduce a new way to realize the generation of vector beams of SH by using a nonlinear fork grating to solve such a *** examine the properties of generated SH vector beams by using Stokes parameters,which agree well with theoretical *** we demonstrate that linearly polarized vector beams with arbitrary topological charge can be achieved by adjusting the optical axis direction of the half-wave plate(HWP).Finally,we measure the nonlinear conversion efficiency of such a *** proposed method provides a new way to generate vector beams of SH by using a microstructure of nonlinear crystal,which may also be applied in other nonlinear processes and promote all-optical waveband applications of such vector beams.

A passively switchable erbium-doped fiber laser based on alcohol as the saturable absorber(SA)has been *** SA is prepared by filling the gap between two optical patch cords with alcohol to form a sandwich *** modulation depth of the alcohol-SA is measured to be 6.4%.By appropriately adjusting the pump power and the polarization state in the cavity,three kinds of mode-locked pulse patterns can be achieved and switched,including bright pulse,bright/dark soliton pair,and dark *** different soliton emissions all operate at the fundamental frequency state,with a repetition rate of 20.05 MHz and a central wavelength of~1563 *** the best of our knowledge,this is the first demonstration of a switchable soliton fiber laser using alcohol as the *** experimental results further indicate that organic liquid-like alcohol has great potential for constructing ultrafast lasers.
