Paleoclimatic proxies from global closed basins and the possible beginning of Anthropocene

Global closed basins,occupying almost one fifth of the world's land area,spatially coincide with arid and semiarid *** proxies can indicate basin-wide environmental change and human ***,previous studies have not approached the use of proxies in the same way to reconstruct natural and anthropogenic processes at regional and global *** we present a regional study to investigate the basic processes of paleoclimatic proxies,from a typical closed-basin system in arid *** use multiple paleoclimatic proxies of surface samples and sediments,as well as groundwater and sediment ages to study environmental change and human *** then establish a dataset for paleoclimatic proxies from global closed basins and do a numerical analysis on *** studies verify that human activity greatly impacts paleoclimatic proxies,especially with regard to surface samples,as well as groundwater age,but Holocene sediments are less *** from global studies indicate that the major changing trend of the wet/dry status of closed basins is associated with the movement of the westerly jet streams controlled by long-term changes in winter *** is an abrupt change between 1800 AD and 1900 AD,according to a numerical synthesis of paleoclimatic proxies from global closed basins,which can be linked to human *** suggest this time period can be considered as a start point for the Anthropocene based on the sedimentary evidence of closed basins,globally.

Ecological and hydrologic evolution history in the sensitive zone of both East Asian summer monsoon and Westerly since the Last Glacial Maximum

The Qilian Mountains,located in the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau,is a sensitive zone of both East Asian summer monsoon(EAsM)and westerly winds(WW).The evolution history and driving mechanism of the ecosystem and hydrologic cycle in this region on long-term timescales have not yet been *** this study,we comprehensively study the hydrologic and ecological evolution history in the sensitive zone since the Last Glacial Maximum(LGM)by integrating surface sediments,paleoclimate records,TraCE-21ka transient simulations,and PMIP3-CMIP5 multi-model *** show that hydrologic and ecological proxies from surface sediments are significantly different from west to east and mainly divided into three sections:the monsoonaffected region in the eastern Qilian Mountains,the intersection region in the central Qilian Mountains,and the westerly-affected region in the western Qilian ***,paleo-ecological and paleohydrologic reconstructions from the surroundings uncover a synchronous climate evolution that the EAsM mainly controls the eastern Qilian Mountains and penetrates the central Qilian Mountains in monsoon intensity maximum,while the WW dominates the central and western Qilian Mountains on both glacial-interglacial and millennial *** simulation results further bear out the glacial humid climate in the central and western Qilian Mountains caused by the enhanced WW,and the humidity maximum in the eastern Qilian Mountains controlled by the strong mid-Holocene *** general,east-west differences in climate pattern and response for the EAsM and the WW are integrally stable on both short-term and long-term timescales.

Discovery of a 1.0 Ma Yellow River terrace and redating of the fourth Yellow River terrace in Lanzhou area

Based on the aeolian loess sequence-stratigraphic division and paleomagnetic datings on terraces, we found that an undiscovered terrace with the age of 1.0 Ma BP lies between the Dunwashan terrace and Wuyishan terrace. This terrace recorded an intensive Yellow River incision event during that period. Results of paleomagnetic dating and optically stimulated luminescence (OsL) dating of the Wuyishan loess section and Zaoshugou loess section on the fourth Yellow River terrace (T4) show that the age of the fourth Yellow River terrace in Lanzhou area is 0.86 Ma BP rather than the previously believed 0. 6 Ma BP. This result answers a long-term question in the ge-omorphology community of whether there exists a 0. 8 Ma terrace in Lanzhou area. The discovery of the 1. 0 Ma Yellow River terrace and redating of the age of 0.6 Ma terrace in Lanzhou area provide new insights into further research on the evolution of Yellow River.

Three modes of climate change since the Last Glacial Maximum in arid and semi-arid regions of the Asian continent

The westerly winds and East Asian summer monsoon play a leading role in climate change of southwestern North America and eastern Asia since the Last Glacial Maximum(LGM),*** convergence in arid and semi-arid regions of the Asian continent(AAC)makes the regional climate change more complicated on the *** are still limitations in applying paleoclimate records and climate simulations of characteristic periods to investigate climate change patterns since the LGM in this *** this study,we adopt two indexes indicating effective moisture and rely on a continuous simulation,a time slice simulation,and numerous paleoclimate records to comprehensively investigate the climate change modes and their driving mechanisms since the LGM in *** demonstrate a millennial-scale climate differentiation phenomenon and three climate change modes possibly occurring in AAC since the *** western AAC largely controlled by the westerly winds is featured as wet climates during the LGM but relatively dry climates during the mid-Holocene(MH),coinciding with the climate change mode in southwestern North ***,dry conditions during the LGM and relatively wet conditions during the MH are reflected in eastern AAC governed by the East Asian summer monsoon,which leans to the climate change mode in eastern *** climate change in central AAC is forced by the interaction of two circulations,it expresses wet conditions in both the LGM and MH,tending to a combination of the southwestern North American and eastern Asian *** and evaporation exert different intensities in influencing three climate modes of different ***,we identify the significant driving effects of greenhouse gases and ice sheets on westerly-dominated zones of AAC,while orbit-driven insolation on monsoon-dominated zones of AAC.

The Impact of Warm Pool ssT and General Circulation on Increased Temperature over the Tibetan Plateau

In this paper, the possible reason of Tibetan Plateau （TP） temperature increasing was investigated. An increase in T min （minimum temperature） plays a robust role in increased TP temperature, which is strongly related to ssT over the warm pool of the western Pacific Ocean, the subtropical westerly jet stream （sWJ）, and the tropical easterly upper jet stream （TEJ）, and the 200hPa zonal wind in East Asia. Composite analysis of the effects of ssT, sWJ, and TEJ on pre and postabrupt changes in T a （annual temperature） and T min over the TP shows remarkable differences in ssT, sWJ, and TEJ. A lag correlation between T a /T min , ssT, and sWJ/TEJ shows that changes in ssT occur ahead of changes in T a /T min by approximately one to three seasons. Partial correlations between T a /T min , ssT, and sWJ/TEJ show that the effect of sWJ on T a /T min is more significant than the effect of ssT. Furthermore, simulations with a community atmospheric model （CAM3.0） were performed, showing a remarkable increase in T a over the TP when the ssT increased by 0.5 ？ C. The main increase in T a and T min in the TP can be attributed to changes in sWJ. A possible mechanism is that changes in ssT force the TEJ to weaken, move south, and lead to increased sWJ and movement of sWJ northward. Finally, changes in the intensity and location of the sWJ cause an increase in T a /T min . It appears that TP warming is governed primarily by coherent TEJ and sWJ variations that act as the atmospheric bridges to remote ssTs in warmpool forcing.

Tectonic and environmental Evolutions of the Northern Tibetan Plateau Prior to the Collision of India with Asia

Holocene climate variation denoted by Barkol Lake sediments in northeastern Xinjiang and its possible linkage to the high and low latitude climates

The climate over the closed inland Barkol Lake, which is located in northeastern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is sig- nificantly influenced by westerly winds today. To improve our understanding of past climate processes in westerly wind influenced regions in northwestern china, a 250-cm sediment section was retrieved from this lake. After taking the carbon reservoir effect into consideration, the chronological sequence of this section was reconstructed based on seven conventional radiocarbon dates of bulk samples, and the bottom age of this section was determined to be about 9400 cal a BP. Multi-proxy datasets, including δ^18Ocar, δ^13Ccar of authigenic carbonate, and total organic carbon were examined using wavelet analysis and singular spectrum analysis methods. Results show that the Holocene in the Barkol Lake region can be divided into four stages：（1） a cold and dry early stage before -8000 cal a BP; （2） a moderately warm and wet middle stage between -8000 and 6000 cal a BP; （3） a warm and dry stage, along with a cooling-wetting tendency from 6000 to 2700 cal a BP; and （4） a fluctuating cooling and wet stage between 2700-800 cal a BP, and a drier stage since 800 cal a BP. The general trend of Holocene climatic changes revealed by Barkol Lake sediments was in agreement with that of adjacent regions. We infer that climatic changes during the Holocene in the Barkol Lake region were influenced not only by high latitudes, especially the North Atlantic region climate, but also tropical low-latitude processes, such as the El Nifio/La Nifia-southern Oscillation. This study demonstrates that the enhanced activities of ENsO may have played an important role in climatic changes in northeastern Xinjiang during the Holo- cene. Our results also suggest that climatic patterns may be temporally different in the northern Xinjiang area in response to the changing predominant control of either the Westerly or the Asian summer monsoon, depending on the contrast of their relat

Modern pollen assemblages and their relationships with vegetation and climate on the northern slopes of the Tianshan Mountains, Xinjiang, china

The reconstruction of paleovegetation and paleoclimate requires an understanding of the relationships between surface pollen assemblages and modern vegetation and ***,we analyzed the characteristics of surface pollen assemblages across different vegetation zones in the Tianshan *** surface pollen analysis and vegetation sample surveys at 75 sites on the northern slopes of the Tianshan Mountains,we determined the correlation between the percentage of dominant pollen types and the corresponding vegetation *** analysis was used to investigate the relationships between surface pollen assemblages and environmental *** results show that the Tianshan Mountains contain several distinct ecological regions,which can be divided into five main vegetation zones from low to high altitudes:mountain desert zone(Hutubi County(HTB):500-1300 m;Qitai County(QT):1000-1600 m),mountain steppe zone(HTB:1400-1600 m;QT:1650-1800 m),mountain forest zone(HTB:1650-2525 m;QT:1850-2450 m),subalpine meadow zone(HTB:2550-2600 m;QT:2500-2600 m),and alpine mat vegetation zone(HTB:2625-2700 m;QT:2625-2750 m).The surface pollen assemblages of different vegetation zones can accurately reflect the characteristics of the mountainous vegetation patterns on the northern slopes of the Tianshan Mountains when excluding the widespread occurrence of Chenopodiaceae,Artemisia,and Picea *** average annual precipitation(P_(ann))and annual average temperature(T_(ann))affect the distribution of surface pollen ***,P_(ann) is the primary environmental factor affecting surface pollen assemblages in this region.A significant correlation exists between the pollen percentage and vegetation cover of Picea,Chenopodiaceae,Artemisia,and ***,Picea,Chenopodiaceae,and Artemisia pollen are over-represented compared with their corresponding vegetation *** Asteraceae pollen percentage roughly reflects the distribution of a species within the loc

Finer topographic data improves distribution modeling of Picea crassifolia in the northern Qilian Mountains

The Qilian Mountains, a national key ecological function zone in western china, play a pivotal role in ecosystem services. However, the distribution of its dominant tree species, Picea crassifolia (Qinghai spruce), has decreased dramatically in the past decades due to climate change and human activity, which may have influenced its ecological functions. To restore its ecological functions, reasonable reforestation is the key measure. Many previous efforts have predicted the potential distribution of Picea crassifolia, which provides guidance on regional reforestation policy. However, all of them were performed at low spatial resolution, thus ignoring the natural characteristics of the patchy distribution of Picea crassifolia. Here, we modeled the distribution of Picea crassifolia with species distribution models at high spatial resolutions. For many models, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) is larger than 0.9, suggesting their excellent precision. The AUC of models at 30 m is higher than that of models at 90 m, and the current potential distribution of Picea crassifolia is more closely aligned with its actual distribution at 30 m, demonstrating that finer data resolution improves model performance. Besides, for models at 90 m resolution, annual precipitation (Bio12) played the paramount influence on the distribution of Picea crassifolia, while the aspect became the most important one at 30 m, indicating the crucial role of finer topographic data in modeling species with patchy distribution. The current distribution of Picea crassifolia was concentrated in the northern and central parts of the study area, and this pattern will be maintained under future scenarios, although some habitat loss in the central parts and gain in the eastern regions is expected owing to increasing temperatures and precipitation.
