Intraspecific trait variation of woody species reduced in a savanna community,southwest China

Plants deploy various ecological strategies in response to environmental heterogeneity.In many forest ecosystems,plants have been reported to have notable inter-and intra-specific trait variation,as well as clear phylogenetic signals,indicating that these species possess a degree of phenotypic plasticity to cope with habitat variation in the community.Savanna communities,however,grow in an open canopy structure and exhibit little species diversification,likely as a result of strong environmental stress.In this study,we hypothesized that the phylogenetic signals of savanna species would be weak,the intraspecific trait variation(ITV)would be low,and the contribution of intraspecific variation to total trait variance would be reduced,owing to low species richness,multiple stresses and relatively homogenous community structure.To test these hypotheses,we sampled dominant woody species in a dry-hot savanna in southwestern China,focusing on leaf traits related to adaptability of plants to harsh conditions(yearround intense radiation,low soil fertility and seasonal droughts).We found weak phylogenetic signals in leaf traits and low ITV(at both individual and canopy-layer levels).Intraspecific variation(including leaf-,layer-and individual-scales)contributed little to the total trait variance,whereas interspecific variation and variation in leaf phenology explained substantial variance.Our study suggests that intraspecific trait variation is reduced in savanna community.Furthermore,our findings indicate that classifying species by leaf phenology may help better understand how species coexist under similar habitats with strong stresses.

寄主介导效应被认为会导致半寄生性的桑寄生植物的繁殖物候异步性,并由此为与桑寄生植物互惠共生的传粉者和种子散布者提供更长时间的食物资源供应,但目前关于此方面的研究还缺乏相关的实证数据。本研究以广泛分布于中国西南西双版纳地区的一种泛性桑寄生科植物五蕊寄生(Dendrophthoe pentandra)为材料,每周监测其开花、结果物候,检测了其开花和结果物候是否呈季节性格局,量化了五蕊寄生繁殖物候的异步程度,并检测了影响该植物始花期早晚的因素。最后,本研究还检验了五蕊寄生繁殖物候的异步性随寄主种类数量变化的效应。研究结果表明:(i)在连续两年的物候观测中五蕊寄生的花期和果期都呈单峰分布格局;(ii)始花期显著受到植物大小和光照强度的影响,即冠幅越大和受光程度越高的植物个体有更早的始花期和更长的花期和果期;(iii)不同的寄主种类对五蕊寄生的繁殖物候有显著的影响,但与假设相反的是,随着寄主种类数量的增加,五蕊寄生繁殖物候的异步性没有显著提高。这项研究表明,在解释泛性桑寄生植物的繁殖物候异步性及寄主种类的数量对其影响的生态学意义还需进行更深入的探究。

Arabidopsis VQ10 interacts with WRKY8 to modulate basal defense against Botrytis cinerea

Recent studies in Arabidopsis have revealed that some vq motif-containing proteins physically interact with WRKY transcription factors; however, their specific biological functions are still poorly understood. In this study, we confirmed the interaction between VQ1o and WRKY8, and show that VQ1o and WRKY8 formed a complex in the plant cell nucleus. Yeast two-hybrid analysis showed that the middle region of WRKY8 and the vq motif of vqlo are critical for their interaction, and that this interaction promotes the DNA-binding activity of WRKY8. Further investigation revealed that the VqlO protein was exclusively localized in the nucleus, and VQ1o was predominantly expressed in siliques, vQ1o expression was strongly responsive to the necrotrophic fungal pathogen, Botrytis cinerea and defense-relatedhormones. Phenotypic analysis showed that disruption of VQlo increased mutant plants susceptibility to the fungal pathogen B. cinerea, whereas constitutive-expres- sion of VQlo enhanced resistance to B. cinerea. Consis- tent with these findings, expression of the defenserelated PLANT DEFENSIN1.2 （PDFt2） gene was decreased in vqlo mutant plants, after B. cinerea infection, but increased in vQ1o-overexpressing transgenic plants. Taken together, our findings provide evidence that VQlo physically interacts with WRKY8 and positively regulates plant basal resistance against the necrotrophic fungal pathogen B. cinerea.

Late Pliocene diversity and distribution of Drynaria(Polypodiaceae) in western Yunnan explained by forest vegetation and humid climates

The palaeodiversity of flowering plants in Yunnan has been extensively interpreted from both a molecular and fossil perspective. However, for cryptogamic plants such as ferns, the palaeodiversity remains poorly known. In this study, we describe a new ferny fossil taxon, Drynaria lanpingensis sp. nov. Huang,Su et Zhou(Polypodiaceae), from the late Pliocene of northwestern Yunnan based on fragmentary frond and pinna with in situ spores. The frond is pinnatifid and the pinnae are entirely margined. The sori are arranged in one row on each side of the primary vein. The spores have a semicircular to bean-shaped equatorial view and a tuberculate surface. Taken together with previously described fossils, there are now representatives of three known fossil taxa of Drynaria from the late Pliocene of western Yunnan.These finds suggest that Drynaria diversity was considerable in the region at that time. As Drynaria is a shade-tolerant plant, growing preferably in wet conditions in the understory of forests, its extensive existence may indicate forest vegetation and humid climates in western Yunnan during the late Pliocene.This is in line with results from floristic investigations and palaeoclimatic reconstructions based on fossil floras.

Light induces petal color change in Quisqualis indica(Combretaceae)

Petal color change, a common phenomenon in angiosperms, is induced by various environmental and endogenous factors. Interestingly, this phenomenon is important for attracting pollinators and further reproductive success. Quisqualis indica L.(Combretaceae) is a tropical Asian climber that undergoes sequential petal color change from white to pink to red. This color changing process is thought to be a good strategy to attract more pollinators. However, the underlying physiological and biochemical mechanisms driving this petal color change phenomenon is still underexplored. In this context, we investigated whether changes in pH, pollination, light, temperature or ethylene mediate petal color change. We found that the detected changes in petal pH were not significant enough to induce color alterations. Additionally, pollination and temperatures of 20-30℃did not alter the rate of petal color change; however, flowers did not open when exposed to constant temperatures at 15℃ or 35℃.Moreover, the application of ethylene inhibitor, i.e., silver thiosulphate, did not prevent color change. It is worth mentioning here that in our study we found light as a strong factor influencing the whole process of petal color change, as petals remained white under dark conditions. Altogether, the present study suggests that petal color change in Q. indica is induced by light and not by changes in petal pH, pollination, ethylene, or temperature, while extremely low or high temperatures affect flower anthesis. In summary, our findings represent the probable mechanism underlying the phenomenon of petal color change, which is important for understanding flower color evolution.

Seed size affects rodent–seed interaction consistently across plant species but not within species:evidence from a seed tracking experiment of 41 tree species

Scatter-hoarding rodents play a crucial role in seed survival and seed dispersal.As one of the most important seed traits,seed size and its effect on rodent–seed interaction attract lots of attention.Current studies usually target one or a few species and show inconsistent patterns;however,few experiments include a large number of species although many plant species usually coexist in natural forest and overlap in fruiting time.Here,we tracked the dispersal and predation of 26100 seeds belonging to 41 tree species in a subtropical forest for 2 years.Most species showed no relationships between seed size and rodent foraging preference,while the remaining species displayed diverse of patterns:monotonic decrease and increase trends,and hump-shaped and U-shaped patterns,indicating that a one-off study with a few species might give misleading information.However,the seed size effect across species was consistent in both years,indicating that including a large number of species that hold a sufﬁcient range of seed size may avoid the aforementioned bias.Interestingly,seed size effect differed among rodent foraging processes:a negative effect on seed harvest,a hump-shaped effect on seed removal and removal distance,while a positive effect on overwinter survival of cached seeds,indicating that rodents may make trade-offs between large and small seeds both among foraging processes and within a single process,thus lead to a parabolic relationship between seed size and seed dispersal success,that is medium-sized seeds were more likely to be removed and cached,and transported with a further distance.

Investigating how different classes of nest predators respond to the playback of the begging calls of nestling birds

Begging brings benefits and costs for nestling birds:it can indicate their needs to their parents,but it can also be a cue used by predators to find the nest.The costs,like many variables related to nest predation,can be specific to what kinds of predators are present and their auditory capabilities.These costs and benefits could also be affected by human noise,as noise could disrupt communication to parents and eavesdropping by predators,although human-produced noise might be easily ignored if predators can hear high-frequency components of the begging.We studied nest predation on a generalist bird,the Red-whiskered Bulbul(Pycnonotus jocosus),in a tropical forest in which there are many kinds of nest predators,including birds,mammals and reptiles.In 20 natural nests in which artificial eggs were placed,and subsequently in 140 artificial nests,we broadcast recordings of begging nestlings,with and without traffic noise,at two volume levels.We hypothesized that playback would increase predation relative to a silent control,and that mixing in traffic noise with the begging would decrease predation,as the begging signal was masked.However,we hypothesized that some predators,particularly small mammals with sensitive high-frequency hearing,might ignore the traffic noise.We found that predation was lowest for the control treatment,and lower for treatments mixed with traffic noise than for those without it.Small mammals,however,showed an unexpected pattern,displaying less nest predation in the treatments with traffic noise.Our results demonstrate the human-associated noise can disturb nest predators and influence which kinds of predators use begging to locate nests.

Ethiopian vegetation types,climate and topography

Ethiopia is land of geographical contrasts with elevations that range from 125 m below sea level in the Danakil Depression to 4533 m above sea level in the Semien Mountains,a world heritage site.The diverse climate of various ecological regions of the country has driven the establishment of diverse vegetation,which range from Afroalpine vegetation in the mountains to the arid and semi-arid vegetation type in the lowlands.The formation of Ethiopian vegetation is highly connected to the climate and geological history of the country.Highland uplift and rift formation due to volcanic forces formed novel habitats with different topography and climatic conditions that have ultimately become drivers for vegetation diversification.Due to Ethiopia's connection with the temperate biome in the north and the Arabian Peninsula during the dry glacial period,the biotic assemblage of Ethiopian highlands consists of both Afrotropical and palearctic biota.In general,eight distinct vegetation types have been identified in Ethiopia,based mainly on elevation and climate gradients.These vegetation types host their own unique species,but also share several common species.Some of the vegetation types are identified as centers of endemism and have subsequently been identified globally as the East African Afromontane hotspot.Ethiopia is biologically rich,with more than 6500 vascular plant species.Of these species,12%are endemic mainly due to geographical isolation and unique climatic conditions.However,researchers have yet to extensively investigate the ecology,phenology,as well as the evolutionary,genetics,and conservation status of Ethiopian vegetations at community and species level over space and time.This lack of research is a barrier to achieving the goal of zero global plant extinctions.Taxa extinction risk assessment has not been extensively carried out for majority of Ethiopian species.Detailed research is needed to explore how vegetation and species respond to rapidly growing environmental change.Currently,human-induced climate
