Discerning vulnerability differences among different aged trees to drought-driven growth decline or to mortality is critical to implement age-specific countermeasures for forest management in water-limited *** important species for afforestation in dry environments of northern China,Mongolian pine(Pinus sylvestris *** Litv.)has recently exhibited growth decline and dieback on many sites,particularly pronounced in old-growth ***,changes in response to drought stress by this species with age as well as the underlying mechanisms are poorly *** this study,tree-ring data and remotely sensed vegetation data were combined to investigate variations in growth at individual tree and stand scales for young(9-13 years)and aging(35-52 years)plantations of Mongolian pine in a water-limited area of northern China.A recent decline in tree-ring width in the older plantation also had lower values in satellited-derived normalized difference vegetation indices and normalized difference water indices relative to the younger *** addition,all measured growth-related metrics were strongly correlated with the self-calibrating Palmer drought severity index during the growing season in the older *** of growth to drought of the older plantation might be attributed to more severe hydraulic limitations,as reflected by their lower sapwood-and leaf-specific hydraulic *** study presents a comprehensive view on changes of growth with age by integrating multiple methods and provides an explanation from the perspective of plant hydraulics for growth decline with *** results indicate that old-growth Mongolian pine plantations in water-limited environments may face increased growth declines under the context of climate warming and drying.

Urban green space promotes the health of urban residents,enhances urban ecosystem biodiversity,mitigates environmental pollution,and attenuates urban heat island ***,urban vegetation cover is highly heterogeneous and difficult to *** this study,the variation of urban fractional vegetation cover(FVC)in 328 cities in China from 1990 to2022 was quantified based on Landsat satellite data at a 30-m *** was found that from 1990 to 2005,due to increases in building density and impervious surfaces in cities,the national mean urban vegetation cover decreased from 0.38 to ***2005,urban vegetation cover began to reverse,reaching 0.45 in *** increasing trend was most pronounced in newly built urban *** decrease in average urban vegetation cover before 2005 was mainly due to the expansion of low vegetation cover areas,while the increase in urban vegetation cover after 2005 manifested as the expansion of high vegetation cover *** reversal in the trend of urban vegetation cover change after 2004 is related to the gradual implementation of national policies requiring increased urban green space *** urban gross domestic product(GDP)showed the highest correlation with changes in urban vegetation *** large and medium-sized cities,the top three factors influencing vegetation cover were GDP,urban population,and ***,for cities in arid/semi-arid regions,changes in vegetation cover were more sensitive to climatic factors(such as precipitation).Although the urban vegetation cover in China has substantially increased in recent years,the urban green space in small-sized cities and in the old urban districts of large-sized cities still have room to improve.

Global warming and algal blooms have been two of the most pressing problems faced by the world *** recent decades,numerous studies indicated that global warming promoted the expansion of algal ***,research on how algal blooms respond to global warming is *** warming coupled with eutrophication promoted the rapid growth of phytoplankton,which resulted in an expansion of algal *** blooms are affected by the combined effects of global warming,including increases in temperatures,CO_(2)concentration,and nutrient input to aquatic systems by extreme weather *** the growth of phytoplankton requires CO_(2),they appear to act as a carbon ***,algal blooms will release CH4,CO_(2),and inorganic nitrogen when they die and *** substrate nitrogen increases from decompose algal biomass,more N2O will be released by nitrification and *** comparison to CO_(2),CH4has 28-fold and N2O has 265-fold greenhouse ***,algal blooms in the polar regions may contribute to melting glaciers and sea ice(will release greenhouse gas,which contribute to global warming)by reducing surface albedo,which consequently would accelerate global ***,algal blooms and global warming could form feedback loops which prevent human survival and *** researches shall examine the mechanism,trend,strength,and control strategies involved in this mutual ***,it will promote global projects of environmental protection combining governance greenhouse gas emissions and algal blooms,to form a geoengineering for regulating the cycles of carbon,nitrogen,and phosphorus.

A sediment core(YJK19-02)collected from the southern outlet of Hangzhou Bay near the Yongjiang River estuary in East China was analyzed for grain size,lignin,bulk elemental composition,stable carbon isotope,and rare earth elements(REEs)to determine the sources and diagenesis of sedimentary organic matter(OM)of the estuary and adjacent areas since the Late Pleistocene.δ^(13)C values(-24.80‰–-23.60‰),total organic carbon/total nitrogen(TOC/TN)molar ratios(8.00–12.14),and light rare earth element/heavy rare earth element ratios(LREE/HREE=8.34–8.91)revealed the predominance of terrestrial sources of OM,mainly from the Changjiang(Yangtze)*** lignin parameters of syringyl/vanillyl(S/V=0.20–0.73)and cinnamyl/vanillyl(C/V=0.03–0.19)ratios indicate the predominance of nonwoody angiosperms,and the vanillic acid/vanillin ratios[(Ad/Al)_(V)=0.32–1.57]indicate medium to high degrees of lignin *** increasing trend ofΛ(total lignin in mg/100-mg OC)values from ca.14500 a BP to ca.11000 a BP reflected the increase in temperature during the Late ***,a time lag effect of temperature on vegetation abundance was also *** relatively higher and stableΛvalues correspond to the higher temperature during the mid-Holocene from ca.8500 a BP to ca.4500 a BP.Λvalues decreased from ca.4000 a BP to the present,corresponding to historical temperature fluctuations during this *** results show that the vegetation abundance in the Yongjiang River Basin since the Late Pleistocene was related to the temperature fluctuation duo to climate change.

As one of the world's largest emitters of greenhouse gases,China has set itself the ambitious goal of achieving carbon peaking and carbon ***,it is crucial to quantify the magnitude and trend of sources and sinks of atmospheric carbon dioxide(CO_(2)),and to monitor China's progress toward these *** state-of-the-art datasets and models,this study comprehensively estimated the anthropogenic CO_(2)emissions from energy,industrial processes and product use,and waste along with natural sources and sinks of CO_(2)for all of China during *** recognize the differences among various methods of estimating greenhouse emissions,the estimates are compared with China's National Greenhouse Gas Inventories(NGHGIs)for 1994,2005,2010,2012,and *** CO_(2)emissions in China have increased by 7.39 times from 1980 to 12.77 Gt CO_(2)a^(-1)in *** benefiting from ecological projects(e.g.,Three Norths Shelter Forest System Project),the land carbon sink in China has reached 1.65 Gt CO_(2)a^(-1)averaged through 2010-2021,which is almost 15.81 times that of the carbon sink in the *** average,China's terrestrial ecosystems offset 14.69%±2.49%of anthropogenic CO_(2)emissions through *** provincial-level administrative regions of China,Xizang and Qinghai,have achieved carbon neutrality according to our estimates,but nearly half of the administrative regions of China have terrestrial carbon sink offsets of less than 10%of anthropogenic CO_(2)*** study indicated a high level of consistency between NGHGIs and various datasets used for estimating fossil CO_(2)emissions,but found notable differences for land carbon *** estimates of the terrestrial carbon sinks of NGHGIs urgently need to be verified with process-based models which integrate the comprehensive carbon cycle processes.

Warming-induced carbon loss via ecosystem respiration(R_(e))is probably intensifying in the alpine grassland ecosystem of the Tibetan Plateau owing to more accelerated warming and the higher temperature sensitivity of R_(e)(Q_(10)).However,little is known about the patterns and controlling factors of Q_(10)on the plateau,impeding the comprehension of the intensity of terrestrial carbon-climate feedbacks for these sensitive and vulnerable ***,we synthesized and analyzed multiyear observations from 14 sites to systematically compare the spatiotemporal variations of Q_(10)values in diverse climate zones and ecosystems,and further explore the relationships between Q_(10)and environmental ***,structural equation modeling was utilized to identify the direct and indirect factors predicting Q_(10)values during the annual,growing,and non-growing *** results indicated that the estimated Q_(10)values were strongly dependent on temperature,generally,with the average Q_(10)during different time periods increasing with air temperature and soil temperature at different measurement depths(5 cm,10 cm,20 cm).The Q_(10)values differentiated among ecosystems and climatic zones,with warming-induced Q_(10)declines being stronger in colder regions than elsewhere based on spatial *** was the most cardinal factor in predicting annual Q_(10)values,significantly and positively correlated with Q_(10).Soil temperature(Ts)was identified as the other powerful predictor for Q_(10),and the negative Q_(10)-Ts relationship demonstrates a larger terrestrial carbon loss potentiality in colder than in warmer regions in response to global *** that the interpretations of the effect of soil moisture on Q_(10)were complicated,reflected in a significant positive relationship between Q_(10)and soil moisture during the growing season and a strong quadratic correlation between the two during the annual and non-growing *** findings are conducive to imp

Background Rhizosphere fungi play an important role in plant community dynamics and biogeochemical *** the drivers of fungal community assembly have been studied in varied ecosystems, it is still unclear how these processes function for rhizosphere soil fungi in temperate forests. Furthermore, it is unknown whether the relative contributions of important determinants remain consistent or vary across fungal ecological guilds. This study used high-throughput next-generation sequencing to characterize the fungal communities of 247 rhizosphere soil samples from 19 tree species in a temperate forest within Northeast China. We aimed to investigate how three important determinants in temperate forests(host tree species, neighbouring plant communities, and edaphic properties) influence the community assembly of fungal functional guilds in the rhizosphere soil of *** We found that host tree species contributed more to plant pathogens' community composition than ectomycorrhizal fungi, and plant pathogens consistently showed higher host specialization than ectomycorrhizal *** also showed high host specialization, which was mediated by the tree species' effect on rhizosphere soil pH. Although neighboring plant communities contributed remarkably to richness of all fungal guilds, this effect on fungal composition varied across functional guilds, with stronger effect for biotrophic guilds(plant pathogens and ectomycorrhizal fungi) than for non-biotrophic guild(saprotrophs). Neighboring plant communities shaped the ectomycorrhizal community composition strongly in all samples regardless of host trees' mycorrhizal type, whereas edaphic properties were the most important drivers for this guild in samples from only ectomycorrhizal-associated trees. Forests,the largest terrestrial carbon sinks,play an important role in carbon sequestration and climate change *** forest attributes and environmental factors have been shown to impact aboveground biomass,their influence on biomass stocks in species-rich forests in southern China,a biodiversity hotspot,has rarely been *** this study,we characterized the effects of environmental factors,forest structure,and species diversity on aboveground biomass stocks of 30 plots(1 ha each) in natural forests located within seven nature reserves distributed across subtropical and marginal tropical zones in Guangxi,*** results indicate that forest aboveground biomass stocks in this region are lower than those in mature tropical and subtropical forests in other ***,we found that aboveground biomass was positively correlated with stand age,mean annual precipitation,elevation,structural attributes and species richness,although not with species *** we compared stands with the same basal area,we found that aboveground biomass stock was higher in communities with a higher coefficient of variation of diameter at breast *** findings highlight the importance of maintaining forest structural diversity and species richness to promote aboveground biomass accumulation and reveal the potential impacts of precipitation changes resulting from climate warming on the ecosystem services of subtropical and northern tropical forests in ***,many natural forests in southern China are not fully ***,their continued growth will increase their carbon storage over time.
