Effects of aggregate size distribution and carbon nanotubes on the mechanical properties of cemented gangue backfill samples under true triaxial compression

The mechanical behavior of cemented gangue backfill materials(CGBMs)is closely related to particle size distribution(PSD)of aggregates and properties of cementitious ***,the true triaxial compression tests,CT scanning,SEM,and EDS tests were conducted on cemented gangue backfill samples(CGBSs)with various carbon nanotube concentrations(P_(CNT))that satisfied fractal theory for the PSD of *** mechanical properties,energy dissipations,and failure mechanisms of the CGBSs under true triaxial compression were systematically *** results indicate that appropriate carbon nanotubes(CNTs)effectively enhance the mechanical properties and energy dissipations of CGBSs through micropore filling and microcrack bridging,and the optimal effect appears at P_(CNT)of 0.08wt%.Taking PSD fractal dimension(D)of 2.500 as an example,compared to that of CGBS without CNT,the peak strength(σ_(p)),axial peak strain(ε_(1,p)),elastic strain energy(Ue),and dissipated energy(U_(d))increased by 12.76%,29.60%,19.05%,and90.39%,***,excessive CNTs can reduce the mechanical properties of CGBSs due to CNT agglomeration,manifesting a decrease inρ_(p),ε_(1,p),and the volumetric strain increment(Δε_(v))when P_(CNT)increases from 0.08wt%to 0.12wt%.Moreover,the addition of CNTs improved the integrity of CGBS after macroscopic failure,and crack extension in CGBSs appeared in two modes:detour and pass through the ***σ_(p)and U_(d)firstly increase and then decrease with increasing D,and porosity shows the opposite ***ε_(1,p)andΔε_(v)are negatively correlated with D,and CGBS with D=2.150 has the maximum deformation parameters(ε_(1,p)=0.05079,Δε_(v)=0.01990)due to the frictional slip effect caused by coarse *** increasing D,the failure modes of CGBSs are sequentially manifested as oblique shear failure,"Y-shaped"shear failure,and conjugate shear failure.

Targets capture by distributed active swarms via bio-inspired reinforcement learning

Natural swarms arranged from cells to herds are usually decentralized but display intriguing collective intelligence in coordinating individuals across large scales to efficiently achieve their common goals. Learning from nature may provide new strategies for controlling collective dynamics of synthetic swarms to accomplish specific functions. Here, we present a bioinspired computational framework that steers distributed active swarms to collectively capture and merge targets via reinforcement learning. We exploit collective milling structures of natural herds to cage the targets, and adopt a switching control policy inspired by sperms' chiral dynamics to optimize the trajectories of individuals, through which the active swarms can selforganize to enclose single or multiple distant targets in a dynamical, adaptive and scalable manner. There exists a critical swarm size, beyond which the excessive competition between agents would generate large mechanical forces, leading to capture instability but enabling the transition from short-distance to long-distance merging capture of multiple targets. This work provides physical insights into distributed active swarms and could offer a multilevel, decentralized strategy toward controlling swarm robotics in wide applications such as bio-medical devices, machine immunity, and target clearance.

Cells are the fundamental units of biological systems and exhibit unique development trajectories and molecular features. Our exploration of how the genomes orchestrate the formation and maintenance of each cell, and control the cellular phenotypes of various organismsis, is both captivating and intricate. Since the inception of the first single-cell RNA technology, technologies related to single-cell sequencing have experienced rapid advancements in recent years. These technologies have expanded horizontally to include single-cell genome, epigenome,proteome, and metabolome, while vertically, they have progressed to integrate multiple omics data and incorporate additional information such as spatial sc RNA-seq and CRISPR screening. Single-cell omics represent a groundbreaking advancement in the biomedical field,offering profound insights into the understanding of complex diseases, including cancers. Here, we comprehensively summarize recent advances in single-cell omics technologies, with a specific focus on the methodology section. This overview aims to guide researchers in selecting appropriate methods for single-cell sequencing and related data analysis.

Applications of advanced control methods in spacecrafts:progress, challenges, and future prospects

We aim at examining the current status of advanced control methods in spacecrafts from an engineer's perspective. Instead of reviewing all the fancy theoretical results in advanced control for aerospace vehicles, the focus is on the advanced control methods that have been practically applied to spacecrafts during flight tests, or have been tested in real time on ground facilities and general testbeds/simulators built with actual flight data. The aim is to provide engineers with all the possible control laws that are readily available rather than those that are tested only in the laboratory at the moment. It turns out that despite the blooming developments of modern control theories, most of them have various limitations, which stop them from being practically applied to spacecrafts. There are a limited number of spacecrafts that are controlled by advanced control methods, among which H_2/H_∞ robust control is the most popular method to deal with flexible structures, adaptive control is commonly used to deal with model/parameter uncertainty, and the linear quadratic regulator(LQR) is the most frequently used method in case of optimal control. It is hoped that this review paper will enlighten aerospace engineers who hold an open mind about advanced control methods, as well as scholars who are enthusiastic about engineering-oriented problems.

Characteristic model-based consensus of networked heterogeneous robotic manipulators with dynamic uncertainties

In this paper, we address the characteristic model-based discrete-time consensus problem of networked robotic manipulators with dynamic uncertainties. The research objective is to achieve joint-position consensus of multiple robotic agents interconnected on directed graphs containing a spanning tree. A novel characteristic model-based distributed adaptive control scenario is proposed with a state-relied projection estimation law and a characteristic model-based distributed controller. The performance analysis is also unfolded where the uniform ultimate boundedness(UUB) of consensus errors is derived by resorting to the discrete-time-domain stability analysis tool and the graph theory. Finally, numerical simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed theoretical strategy.

A framework for stability analysis of high-order nonlinear systems based on the CMAC method

A framework for analyzing the stability of a class of high-order minimum-phase nonlinear systems of relative degree two based on the characteristic model-based adaptive control(CMAC) method is presented. In particular, concerning the tracking problem for such high-order nonlinear systems, by introducing a consistency condition for quantitatively describing modeling errors corresponding to a group of characteristic models together with a certain kind of CMAC laws, we prove closed-loop stability and show that such controllers can make output tracking error arbitrarily small. Furthermore, following this framework, with a specific characteristic model and a golden-section adaptive controller, detailed sufficient conditions to stabilize such groups of highorder nonlinear systems are presented and, at the same time, tracking performance is analyzed. Our results provide a new perspective for exploring the stability of some high-order nonlinear plants under CMAC, and lay certain theoretical foundations for practical applications of the CMAC method.

Sampled-data feedback and stability for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems based on characteristic modeling method

In this paper, we investigate the tracking problem for a class of second-order uncertain nonlinear systems using sampled-data output feedback. Our controller is designed based on the characteristic modeling method. We first derive the corresponding characteristic model and then give the sampled-data feedback control law, which is referred to as "golden-section adaptive control based on characteristic models". The closedloop system is shown to be stable and, concurrently, it is demonstrated that the tracking error can be made arbitrarily small by taking a sufficiently small sampling period. Our results improve upon the findings of previous work by removing the persistent excitation condition, and also lay certain theoretical foundations for practical applications of golden-section adaptive control.

Characteristic model-based H2/H∞ robust adaptive control during the re-entry of hypersonic cruise vehicles

This paper aims at introducing H2 and H∞robustness into the well-known characteristic modelbased golden-section adaptive control law, and applying the robust adaptive control scheme to the attitude control of hypersonic cruise vehicles that are subject to external disturbances and aerodynamic coefficients uncertainties. When maneuvering at ultra high speeds, the attitude system of the hypersonic cruise vehicle is extremely sensitive to external disturbances and aerodynamic coefficients variations, and therefore the adaptiveness and the robustness of the attitude system are crucial during the controller design. To enhance the robustness of the existing golden-section adaptive control law, a golden-section robust adaptive control law is proposed. Compared to the existing control law where the design of the parameter λ depends on experience and is carried out offline, linear matrix inequality-based synthesis of λ is proposed such that the closed-loop system is stable with guaranteed H2 and H∞performance. It is suitable for online computing and provides a time-varyingλ(k) that is adjusted towards the optimal H2 and H∞performance. When being applied to the attitude control of hypersonic vehicles during re-entry, the adaptive nature of the proposed control law provides the attitude system the capability to accommodate large flight conditions, and its H2 and H∞robustness brought by λ(k)guarantees satisfying tracking performance in the presence of disturbances including both external disturbance and absolute aerodynamic coefficients errors.

Observation of topological charge transformations in acoustic vortex using passive periodic systems

Vortex transmutation utilizes a periodic system, which not only enables the alteration of the topological charge(TC) of unstable input vortices but also facilitates their transformation into stable structures. This approach is crucial for investigating the characteristics of vortices in various wave systems. Here, we achieve acoustic vortex TC transmutation by employing a welldesigned dual-structured plate external system(DPES). The interactions between the acoustic vortex and the finite-order discrete rotational symmetry lead to the transformation of its topological charge when complete rotational symmetry is broken to Nthorder discrete symmetry. Our results experimentally demonstrate the acoustic vortex TC transmutation based on passive artificial structures, enabling numerous applications in particle manipulation and information multiplexing as well as advancing our understanding and control over free-space acoustic vortices.
