高山树线被视为记录气候变化对树木和森林影响的生态监测器。迄今为止,大多数树线研究都集中在气候变化如何驱动树线动态的变化。然而,关于生物相互作用如何调节树线变化,特别是在树木更新这一树线动态的瓶颈方面,人们知之甚少。本研究假设种间和种内促进作用决定了高山树线树苗的定居和存活。为了验证这一假设,我们在青藏高原东南部的色季拉山高山树线交错区(海拔4300–4500 m)的3个生长生境(林冠内、林冠外和草地)中共计移植了630株不同年龄(4–6年、7–9年和10–15年)的急尖长苞冷杉(Abies georgei ***)幼苗,连续3年监测了移植后幼苗的微气候、高度生长、死亡率和叶片功能性状。结果发现,叶片功能性状的变化是由微气候驱动的。移植后,叶片可溶性糖和淀粉浓度以及C:P比增加,而叶面积减小。幼苗的资源利用逐渐转向更保守的策略,其背后机制主要受到了生理性状(非结构性碳水化合物和植物养分)的介导。同时,由结构方程模型发现太阳辐射、温度和水分条件在植物相互作用下,通过介导叶片形态性状的变化最终影响了幼苗的死亡率和年生长。上述研究结果表明,植物间的互利作用通过改变太阳辐射和叶片功能性状,最终在决定幼苗生长和存活上起到至关重要的作用,同时也为理解全球气候变化背景下高山树线动态变化的驱动机制提供了新的见解。

Current Situation Analysis and Suggestions for Solid Waste Management Practices among Households in Freetown

Freetown which is the capital city of Sierra Leone is facing challenges with population growth, urbanization, and industrialization, leading to an increase in municipal solid waste (MSW) generation. The study aims to evaluate MSW generation, composition, and disposal methods, as well as the impact of collection fees, policy implementation, and women’s participation in municipal solid waste management (MSWM). The study used both qualitative and quantitative methods for data collection and analysis. The study administered 393 structured questionnaires in three selected sections to collect data on variables such as family size, education, level of knowledge, etc. The study used door-to-door data collection to determine the rate of solid waste generation, composition, and disposal in 66 households from two of the selected sections and 34 households from the other section to evaluate the current situation of MSWM practices among households in Freetown. The study used a descriptive statistic to analyze the data collected using Origin-Pro9 and MS Excel software. The findings showed that with a 4.2% urban growth rate, Freetown had a population of 1,467,543 in 2023, generating 851 tons of MSW per day, with organic waste accounting for 78% of the total MSW generated. Plastic waste generation also increased from 7.6% in 2020 to 13% in 2023. The study emphasizes the need to sustain the MSWM system by prioritizing solid waste collection fees, policy enforcement, and women’s participation in the MSWM sector. It further suggests and provides recommendations for developing an efficient and sustainable MSWM system in Sierra Leone, including knowledge transfer from countries like China and the US.

The development of a coal-based synthetic route to produce benzene polycarboxylic acids(BPCAs)is of great importance for the highly efficient utilization of *** this paper,aqueous NaCl^(-)electrolytic system was used to oxidize Zhaotong lignite to prepare *** electrochemical oxidation of lignite in aqueous NaCl solution could produce more BPCAs than that in aqueous NaOH *** aqueous NaCl electrolytic system could in-suit produce a stable OCl^(-),which was synthesized by the combination reaction between Cl_(2)and OH􀀀generated in the anode or cathode,*** in-suit produced OCl^(-)would degrade the organic structures of the lignite dispersing in the electrolyte to generate *** formation of BPCAs could be greatly affected by current density,electrolysis time and the addition amount of NaCl in the electrolytic system,which resulted from that the factors played an important role in the generation of OCl^(-).The coal related model compounds including anthracene and phenanthrene were used to investigate the electrochemical oxidation mechanism of the *** results indicated that the aromatic ring structures in the lignite were attacked by O_(2)•^(-)from the OCl^(-)to afford BPCAs.

Integrated water and fertilizer management is important for promoting sustainable development of facility agriculture,and biochar plays an important role in guaranteeing food production,as well as alleviating water shortages and the overuse of *** field experiment had twelve treatments and a control(CK)trial including two irrigation amounts(I1,100%ETm;I2,60%ETm;where ETm is the maximum evapotranspiration),two nitrogen applications(N1,360 kg ha^(−1);N2,120 kg ha^(−1))and three biochar application levels(B1,60 t ha^(−1);B_(2),30 t ha^(−1)and B3,0 t ha^(−1)).A multi-objective synergistic irrigation-nitrogen-biochar application system for improving tomato yield,quality,water and nitrogen use efficiency,and greenhouse emissions was developed by integrating the techniques of experimentation and ***,a coupled irrigation-nitrogen-biochar plot experiment was ***,tomato yield and fruit quality parameters were determined experimentally to establish the response relationships between irrigation-nitrogen-biochar dosage and yield,comprehensive quality of tomatoes(TCQ),irrigation water use efficiency(IWUE),partial factor productivity of nitrogen(PFPN),and net greenhouse gas emissions(NGE).Finally,a multi-objective dynamic optimization regulation model of irrigation-nitrogen-biochar resource allocation at different growth stages of tomato was constructed which was solved by the fuzzy programming *** results showed that the application of irrigation and nitrogen to biochar promoted increase in yield,IWUE and PFPN,while it had an inhibitory effect on *** addition,the optimal allocation amounts of water and fertilizer were different under different *** yield of the S1 scenario increased by 8.31%compared to the B_(1)I_(1)N_(2) treatment;TCQ of the S2 scenario increased by 5.14%compared to the B_(2)I_(2)N_(1) treatment;IWUE of the S3 scenario increased by 10.01%compared to the B1I2N2 treatment;PFPN of the S4 scenario increased by

High-Performance Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells Enabled by Nitrogen Configuration optimization in Graphene-Coated Nickel for Enhanced Hydrogen Oxidation

Anion exchange membrane fuel cell （AEMFC） technology is attracting intensive attention,due to its great potential by using non-precious-metal catalysts （NPMCs） in the cathode and cheap bipolar plate materials in alkaline ***,in such case,the kinetics of hydrogen oxidation reaction （HOR） in the anode is two orders of magnitude sluggish than that of acidic electrolytes,which is recognized as the grand challenge in this ***,we report the rationally designed Ni nanoparticles encapsulated by N-doped graphene layers （Ni@NG） using a facile pyrolysis *** on the density functional theory calculations and electrochemical performance analysis,it is witnessed that the rich Pyridinic-N within the graphene shell optimizes the binding energy of the intermediates,thus enabling the fundamentally enhanced activity for HOR with robust *** a proof of concept,the resultant Ni@NG sample as the anode with a low loading(1.8 mg cm-2) in AEMFCs delivers a high peak power density of500 mW cm-2,outperforming all of those of NPMC-based analogs ever reported.

Optimizing anaerobic digestion: Benefits of mild temperature transition from thermophilic to mesophilic conditions

Anaerobic digestion(AD)plays a significant role in renewable energy *** AD from thermophilic(50e57C)to mesophilic(30e38C)conditions to enhance process stability and reduce energy input remains challenging due to the high sensitivity of thermophilic microbiomes to temperature *** we compare the effects of two decreasing-temperature modes from 55 to 35C on cell viability,microbial dynamics,and interspecies interactions.A sharp transition(ST)is a one-step transition by 20C d1,while a mild transition(MT)is a stepwise transition by 1C *** find a greater decrease in methane production with ST(88.8%)compared to MT(38.9%)during the transition *** mode overproduced reactive oxygen species by 1.6-fold,increased membrane permeability by 2.2-fold,and downregulated microbial energy metabolism by 25.1%,leading to increased apoptosis of anaerobes by 1.9-fold and release of intracellular substances by 2.9-fold,further constraining *** higher(1.6 vs.1.1 copies per gyrA)metabolic activity of acetate-dependent methanogenesis implied more efficient methane production in a steady mesophilic,MT-mediated *** binning and network analyses indicated that ST induced dysbiosis in keystone species and greatly enhanced microbial functional redundancy,causing loss of microbial syntrophic interactions and redundant metabolic *** contrast,the greater microbial interconnections(average degrees 44.9 vs.22.1)in MT at a steady mesophilic state suggested that MT could better maintain necessary system functionality and stability through microbial syntrophy or specialized *** MT to transform thermophilic digesters into mesophilic digesters is feasible and could potentially enhance the further optimization and broader application of practical anaerobic engineering.

To quantify the relative contributions of Arctic sea ice and unforced atmospheric internal variability to the “warm Arctic, cold East Asia”(WACE) teleconnection, this study analyses three sets of large-ensemble simulations carried out by the Norwegian Earth system Model with a coupled atmosphere–land surface model, forced by seasonal sea ice conditions from preindustrial, present-day, and future periods. Each ensemble member within the same set uses the same forcing but with small perturbations to the atmospheric initial state. Hence, the difference between the present-day(or future) ensemble mean and the preindustrial ensemble mean provides the ice-loss-induced response, while the difference of the individual members within the present-day(or future) set is the effect of atmospheric internal variability. Results indicate that both present-day and future sea ice loss can force a negative phase of the Arctic Oscillation with a WACE pattern in winter. The magnitude of ice-induced Arctic warming is over four(ten) times larger than the ice-induced East Asian cooling in the present-day(future) experiment;the latter having a magnitude that is about 30% of the observed cooling. Sea ice loss contributes about 60%(80%) to the Arctic winter warming in the present-day(future) experiment. Atmospheric internal variability can also induce a WACE pattern with comparable magnitudes between the Arctic and East Asia. Ice-lossinduced East Asian cooling can easily be masked by atmospheric internal variability effects because random atmospheric internal variability may induce a larger magnitude warming. The observed WACE pattern occurs as a result of both Arctic sea ice loss and atmospheric internal variability, with the former dominating Arctic warming and the latter dominating East Asian cooling.

Water pollution has become a serious problem owing to the development of *** is a promising approach to remove various pollutants in water,such as organic pollutants and antibiotic resistance ***,the design of heterojunction between two semiconductors is an effective path to improve photocatalytic properties due to its potential in improving separation and transfer of photoinduced *** this study,Nb_(2)O_(5)/g-C_(3)N_(4)(NO/CN)composite materials were prepared through a one-step heating *** confirmed successful preparation of NO/CN heterojunction structure and better optical properties than pure g-C_(3)N_(4) and Nb_(2)O_(5).NO/CN composite materials showed excellent photocatalytic efficiency for Escherichia coli(***)inactivation(95%)compared with the pure Nb_(2)O_(5)(10%) and g-C_(3)N_(4)(77%).Meanwhile,NO/CN exhibited better organic pollutants removal(Rh B for94%,methyl orange(MO)for 15%and methylene blue(MB)for 87%)under visible light,which is likely owing to the heterojunction structure between g-C_(3)N_(4) and Nb_(2)O_(5) that leads to the good separation of photogenerated electron-hole *** radical scavenging and electron spin resonance(ESR)experiments demonstrated that superoxide radicals(·O_(2)^(-)) and holes(h^(+)) were the dominant ***,the NO/CN was proposed to be a promising material for effective disinfection and removal of organic contaminants in water treatment.
