Dual-emission carbonized polymer dots for ratiometric sensing and imaging of L-lysine and pH in live cell and zebrafish

It is highly desired to accurately and selectively detect and image intracellular L-lysine and pH in biological systems because they could act as the biomarkers in certain abnormal conditions and may give us a warning of the occurrence of *** has been attracted more focuses to design new ratiometric fluorescent probe for monitoring L-lysine and pH to improve detection *** polymer dots(CPDs),which possess carbon/polymer hybrid structure rather than pure carbon structure and constitute of a carbon core and large amounts of functional groups/polymer chains on the surface,rise up as a new type of fluorescent nanomaterials and especially display many advantages for *** this study,o-phenylenediamine(o-PD)and poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride)(PSMA)are used as the precursors to synthesize the desired CPDs through one-step hydrothermal amide *** prepared CPDs display two well-resolved fluorescence emission bands,i.e.,a very weak emission centered at 470 nm in blue region and a strong emission centered at 558 nm in yellow *** is found that the two emissions are both responsive to L-lysine based on the surface passivation mechanism,whereas,only the yellow emission is responsive to pH due to the protonation/deprotonation process of the amino *** on the different responsive behaviors,ratiometric detection and imaging of L-lysine and pH are *** prepared ratiometric CPDs probe is successfully applied for L-lysine and pH sensing and imaging at two emission channels in live cell and zebrafish with satisfactory results.

Underwater target motion estimation is a challenge for ocean military and scientific *** this work,we propose a method based on the combination of polarization imaging and optical flow for turbid underwater target *** imaging can reduce the influence of backscattered light and obtain high-quality images *** optical flow shows the motion and structural information of the *** use polarized optical flow to obtain the optical flow field and estimate the target *** experimental results of different targets under varying water turbidity levels illustrate that our method is realizable and *** precision is verified by comparing the results with the precise displacement data and calculating two error *** proposed method based on polarized optical flow can obtain accurate displacement information and a good recognition *** target segmentation based on the Otsu method further proves the superiority of the polarized optical flow under turbid *** study is valuable for target detection and motion estimation in scattering environments.

Anisotropic programmable metasurfaces with individually controllable 2-bit elements

Programmable metasurfaces capable of manipulating electromagnetic (EM) waves in real time provide new opportunities for various exciting applications. However, most previous programmable metasurfaces only work in a single polarization mode and their elements are controlled in a whole or one-dimensional way, which limits functionality and adaptability to complex environments. Here, an anisotropic programmable metasurface with individually controllable elements is proposed to realize real-time and independent dual-polarized EM control in the two-dimension direction. The anisotropic metasurface element is designed using the ingenious cross-over resonant structure integrated with two sets of varactors to achieve 2-bit phase modulation in the respective polarization direction. As a demonstration, an anisotropic programmable metasurface prototype with 21×20 such elements is simulated, fabricated, and measured. Real-time beam scanning and vortex wave generation are verified respectively under two different polarized wave incidences, which indicates that the realized anisotropic programmable metasurface can achieve totally distinct functionalities for two orthogonal polarizations. Our work could push programmable metasurfaces one step closer towards more advanced information devices and complicated applications in communication and imaging.?2024 Chinese Laser Press

Parameters of ocular fundus on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography for glaucoma diagnosis

In this review, we summarize the progression of several parameters assessed by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography （SD-OCT） in recent years for the detection of glaucoma. Monitoring the progression of defects in the retinal nerve fiber layer （RNFL） thickness is essential. imaging and analysis of retinal ganglion cells （RGCs） and inner plexiform layer （IPL）, respectively, have been of great importance. Optic nerve head （ONH） topography obtained from 3D SD-OCT images is another crucial step. Other important assessments involve locating the Bruch＇s membrane opening （BMO）, estimating the optic disc size and rim area, and measuring the lamina cribrosa displacement. Still other parameters found in the past three years for glaucoma diagnosis comprise central retinal artery resistive index, optic disc perfusion in optical coherence tomography angiography （OCTA） study, peripapillary choroidal thickness, and choroidal area in SD-OCT. Recently, several more ocular fundus parameters have been found, and compared with the earlier parameters to judge the accuracy of diagnosis. While a few of these parameters have been widely used in clinical practice, a fair number are still in the experimental stage.

Enhanced detection algorithm for apple bruises using structured light imaging

Bruising reduces the edibility and marketability of fresh apples,inevitably causing economic losses for the apple ***,bruises lack obvious visual symptoms,which makes it challenging to detect them using imaging techniques with uniform or diffuse *** study employed the structured light imaging(SLI)technique to detect apple ***,the grayscale reflection images were captured under phase-shifted sinusoidal illumination at three different wavelengths(600,650,and 700 nm)and six different spatial frequencies(0.05,0.10,0.15,0.20,0.25,and 0.30 cycles mm−1).Next,the grayscale reflectance images were demodulated to produce direct component(DC)images representing uniform diffuse illumination and amplitude component(AC)images revealing ***,by quantifying the contrast between bruised regions and sound regions in all AC images,it was found that bruises exhibited the optimal contrast when subjected to sinusoidal illumination at a wavelength of 700 nm and a spatial frequency of 0.25 mm−*** the AC image with optimal contrast,the developed h-domes segmentation algorithm to accurately segment the location and range of the bruised ***,the algorithm successfully accomplished the task of segmenting central bruised regions while addressing the challenge of segmenting edge bruised regions complicated by *** average Intersection over Union(IoU)values for the three types of bruises were 0.9422,0.9231,and 0.9183,*** result demonstrated that the combination of SLI and the h-domes segmentation algorithm was a viable approach for the effective detection of fresh apple bruises.

Natural selection has driven arthropods to evolve fantastic natural compound eyes(NCEs)with a unique anatomical structure,providing a promising blueprint for artificial compound eyes(ACEs)to achieve static and dynamic perceptions in complex ***,each NCE utilises an array of ommatidia,the imaging units,distributed on a curved surface to enable abundant *** has inspired the development of many ACEs using various microlens arrays,but the reported ACEs have limited performances in static imaging and motion ***,it is challenging to mimic the apposition modality to effectively transmit light rays collected by many microlenses on a curved surface to a flat imaging sensor chip while preserving their spatial relationships without *** this study,we integrate 271 lensed polymer optical fibres into a dome-like structure to faithfully mimic the structure of *** ACE has several parameters comparable to the NCEs:271 ommatidia versus 272 for bark beetles,and 180° field of view(FOV)versus 150–180° FOV for most *** addition,our ACE outperforms the typical NCEs by~100 times in dynamic response:31.3 kHz versus 205 Hz for Glossina *** with other reported ACEs,our ACE enables real-time,180° panoramic direct imaging and depth estimation within its nearly infinite depth of ***,our ACE can respond to an angular motion up to 5.6×10^(6)deg/s with the ability to identify translation and rotation,making it suitable for applications to capture high-speed objects,such as surveillance,unmanned aerial/ground vehicles,and virtual reality.

Quasi-quantitative relationship between soil moisture and polarization characteristics

Besides amplitude, frequency and phase, the polarization is another basic property of the electromagnetic wave. In the remote sensing field, the polarization is mainly applied in active detection systems of radar and lidar. This paper presents the quantitative relationship between soil moisture and polarization signatures in a certain type of soil in a farm. And this relationship is expected to be introduced on agriculture and hydrology ultimately. The experiments were performed both in the laboratory and the field. Soil samples with different moisture contents were measured at three wavebands on visible spectrum, and at several viewing angles in the plane of incidence. The polarization signature was indicated by the multi-band and multi-angle degree of linear polarization (DOLP) in this paper. The soil moisture were divided into five levels according to the properties of DOLP curves, namely, the quasi-quantitative relationship between soil moisture and its polarization signature were established. The percentages of soil moisture of the five levels are: ≤10%, 10%-20%, 20%-40%, 40%-56% and >56%, respectively. Although this division for soil moisture is on a rather large scale, it will meet the precision of application agricultural and hydrologic remote sensing.

Dark-field line confocal imaging with point confocality and extended line field for bulk defects detection

Fabrication of high-quality optics puts a strong demand on high-throughput detection of macroscopic bulk defects in optical components.A dark-field line confocal imaging method is proposed with two distinct advantages:(ⅰ)a point-to-line confocal scheme formed by a columnar elliptical mirror and an optical fiber bundle breaks through the constraint on light collection angle and field of view in the traditional line confocal microscopy using an objective,allowing for an extended confocal line field of more than 100 mm while maintaining a light collection angle of 27°;(ⅱ)the bulk defects are independently illuminated as a function of time to eliminate the cross talk in the direction of the confocal slit,thus preserving point confocality and showing the optical section thicknesses to be 162μm in the axial direction,and 19 and 22μm in the orthogonal transverse *** experimental results verify that the method has a minimum detectable bulk defect of less than 5μm and an imaging efficiency of 400 mm2/*** method shows great potential in high-throughput and highsensitivity bulk defects detection.

The electrochemical energy storage performance is greatly determined by the charge transfer and ion transportation occurring in the electrode ***,the enhancement of electric conductivity and ionic mobility is vital for high-performing and stable metal ion ***,we report the properties of oxygen vacancies(VO)and carbon co-doped TiO_(2) hollow spheres(HS-TiO_(2))and compared them with fully oxidized white TiO_(2) hollow spheres(W-TiO_(2)).Theoretical calculations and experimental results revealed that the introduction of carbon dopant and VO in anatase TiO_(2) reduced the bandgap and the existence of localized electrons,leading to a lower migration barrier of Li ions that promoted faster ion diffusion kinetics,enabling the HS-TiO_(2) with higher reversibility during the insertion and extraction of Li ions than the W-TiO_(2).This HS-TiO_(2) delivered superior lithium storage properties with a specific discharge capacity of 214.6 mAh g^(-1) for the 100th cycle at 200 mA g^(-1) and 116.3 mAh g^(-1) over 2000 cycles at a high rate of 2 A g^(-1).

As the lastly unexplored electromagnetic wave,terahertz(THz)radiation has been exploited in a plenty of contexts such as fundamental research,military and civil *** recently,representative two-dimensional(2D)topological semimetal,platinum ditelluride(PtTe_(2))has attracted considerable research interest in THz detection due to its unique physical ***,to achieve practical applications,the low-cost,large-scale,controllable synthesis and efficient patterning of 2D materials are key requirements,which remain a challenge for PtTe_(2)and its photodetectors(PDs).Herein,a facile approach is developed to obtain waferscale(2-inches)patterned PtTe_(2)arrays using one-step tellurium-vapor transformation method and micro-Nano ***_(2)PD arrays are fabricated with the as-grown PtTe_(2)arrays evenly distributed on a 2-inch wafer,exhibiting high conductivity(~2.7×105 S m^(-1))and good electrical *** by the Dirac fermions,PtTe_(2)PDs achieve a broadband(0.02-0.3 THz)response with a fast response speed(~4.7μs),a high sensitivity(~47 pW Hz^(-1/2))and high-resolution transmission THz-imaging capability,which displays the potential of large-area THz array *** results are one step towards the practical applications of integrated PD arrays based on 2D materials.
