Coastal structures in tidal estuaries are of scientific and societal interest as they form important artificial sea barriers resulting in different hydrodynamic conditions on both sides of them.A field study was performed on both sides of an embankment in the Yellow River Delta,China,in order to investigate the temporal and spatial variations in the geotechnical strength of the sediment caused by the effects of different hydrodynamic *** a portable core penetration tester together with hydrodynamic observation and fractal dimension analyses,changes in sediment strength were tested in 1999 and 2002 in rectangular areas on both sides of the embankment and along two cross-shore *** field observations both on space and time scales suggest that different intensity in wave loading can not change the mean strength of the superficial sediment within 0-15cm depth,but rather makes it more uneven under strong hydrodynamic conditions,with the increasing degree of heterogeneity that can be quantitatively described by the fractal *** effect of waves is regarded as the major control factor on the quasi-periodic alternation of sediment strength within the study area surface and the depth stratification in the Yellow River *** work is still necessary to determine the forming process,its mechanism and their implications for efficient environmental management,coastal protection and hazard forecasting.

Spatial changes and driving factors of lake water quality in Inner Mongolia, China

Lakes play important roles in sustaining the ecosystem and economic development in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China,but the spatial patterns and driving mechanisms of water quality in lakes so far remain *** study aimed to identify the spatial changes in water quality and the driving factors of seven lakes(Juyanhai Lake,Ulansuhai Lake,Hongjiannao Lake,Daihai Lake,Chagannaoer Lake,Hulun Lake,and Wulannuoer Lake)across the longitudinal axis(from the west to the east)of Inner ***-scale research was conducted using the comprehensive trophic level index(TLI(Σ)),multivariate statistics,and spatial analysis *** results showed that most lakes in Inner Mongolia were weakly *** dissolved solids and salinity of lake water showed obvious zonation *** and phosphorus were identified as the main pollutants in lakes,with high average concentrations of total nitrogen and total phosphorus being of 4.05 and 0.21 mg/L,*** values of TLI(Σ)ranged from 49.14 to 71.77,indicating varying degrees of lake eutrophication,and phosphorus was the main driver of lake *** lakes of Inner Mongolia could be categorized into lakes to the west of Daihai Lake and lakes to the east of Daihai Lake in terms of salinity and TLI(Σ).The salinity levels of lakes to the west of Daihai Lake exceeded those of lakes to the east of Daihai Lake,whereas the opposite trend was observed for lake trophic *** intensity and mode of anthropogenic activities were the driving factors of the spatial patterns of lake water *** is recommended to control the impact of anthropogenic activities on the water quality of lakes in Inner Mongolia to improve lake ecological *** findings provide a more thorough understanding of the driving mechanism of the spatial patterns of water quality in lakes of Inner Mongolia,which can be used to develop strategies for lake ecosystem protection and water resources management i

Dietary vitamin A,ascorbic acid and α-tocopherol affect the gonad development and reproductive performance of starry flounder Platichthys stellatus broodstock

The present trial was conducted with starry flounder Platichthys stellatus broodstock to evaluate the effects of dietary vitamin A, ascorbic acid, and a-tocopherol on the gonadal development and reproductive performance. 8 000 IU/kg diet vitaminA （VA group）, 500 mg/kg diet ascorbic acid （Vcpp group）, or 250 mg/kg diet a-tocopherol （a-TA group） was added into basal diet to create 3 vitamin experimental diets, respectively. Each diet was fed to 450 starry flounder broodstock for 104 days. Samples were collected weekly. The gonadosomatic index （GSI） of 3 vitamin experimental groups first decreased and then increased. Maximum GSI of Vcpp group was higher than that of ct-TA group but lower than that of VA group. The spawning periods of 3 vitamin experimental groups lasted 49, 56, and 45 days, respectively. No mature eggs were observed in the control group during the trial. The absolute fecundity （AF） and relative fecundity （RF） of a-TA group was higher than that of Vcpp group but lower than that of VA group. The results suggest that different vitamins play different roles in the fish reproductive process. Vitamin A stimulated the maturation of the ovary, ascorbic acid prolonged the spawning period, and a-tocopherol affected the development of the eggs.

Colloidal Gold Immunochromatographic Assay for Rapid On-Site Detection of Tetracycline in Seawater

Recently increasing concerns from the scientists and public have been paid for seawater pollution due to tetracycline(TC)overuse in maricultural ***,there are few methods or instruments that can be used for specific and rapid detection of this antibiotic in *** this study,the colloidal gold immunochromatographic assay(CG-ICA)was used to achieve this goal.A commercialized monoclonal antibody against TC(anti-TC mAb)was selected because of its higher sensitivity(half-maximal inhibitory concentration of 2.38μgL^(-1)).The prepared CG particles(average diameter of 20 nm)were used to label anti-TC mAb at pH *** conjugate pad was formed by spraying the CG-labeled anti-TC mAb on a glass fibre membrane followed by proper *** test pad was made by immobilizing artificial antigen and anti-mouse mAb in the test line and the control line,respectively,in a nitrocellulose *** test strip,assembled with sample pad,conjugate pad,test pad and absorbent pad,could be used to detect TC during seawater sample flowing through these components in *** results could be observed by the naked eye in *** visible limit of detection(vLOD)was 20μgL^(-1) for TC in *** CG-ICA test results were in good agreement with those of liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(LC-MS/MS).The assay also showed that,oxytetracycline(OTC)and chlortetracycline(CTC),as the structural analogues of TC,did not interfere with TC ***,the TC concentration given by test strip could not be affected by the fluctuation of temperature(10℃–30℃),pH(7–9)and salinity(0–40)of ***,CG-ICA is a suitable tool for rapid,on-site,and semi-quantitative detection of TC in seawater.

Fate of Parent and Substituted Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in SBR/MBBR Treatment Process:Experimental Value Against Model Prediction

The knowledge of the existence,distribution and fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)and substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(SPAHs)in wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs)was vital for reducing their concentrations entering the aquatic *** concentrations of 13 SPAHs and 16 PAHs were all determined in a WWTP with styrene butadiene rubber(SBR)in partnership with the moving bed biofilm reactor(MBBR)*** presented a higher concentration lever than PAHs in nearly all *** total removal efficiencies of PAHs and SPAHs ranged from 64.0%to 71.36%and 78.4%to 79.7%,*** total yearly loads of PAHs(43.0 kg)and SPAHs(73.0 kg)were mainly reduced by the primary and SBR/MBBR biological treatment *** tertiary treatment stage had a minor contribution to target compounds *** to a synthesis and improvement fate model,we found that the dominant processes changed as the chemical octanol water partition coefficient(K_(ow))*** the seasonal variations of experimental removal efficiencies were more obvious than that of predicted *** the primary sedimentation tank,dissolution in the aqueous phase and sorption to sludge/particulate matter were controlling processes for the removal of PAHs and *** sorption to sludge and biodegradation were the principal removal mechanisms during the SBR/MBBR biological treatment *** contribution of volatilization to removal was always ***,the basic physicochemical properties and operating parameters influenced the fate of PAHs and SPAHs in the WWTP.

Physical-biogeochemical interactions and potential effects on phytoplankton and Ulva prolifera in the coastal waters off Qingdao(Yellow Sea, China)

In recent years, the spectacular massive green tide of Ulva prolifera has become a recurrent phenomenon appearing every summer in the coastal waters off Qingdao(Yellow Sea, China), attracting the attention of scientists and local government. Based on multidisciplinary data collected during summer and winter, this study focuses on the hydrological characteristics and regional biogeochemical processes in coastal waters off *** results show that the boundary of the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass(YSCWM) can reach the Qingdao coastal region in summer and is locally raised to the upper layers to form coastal upwelling beyond tidal mixing and favorable wind. The regional summer upwelling off the Qingdao coast effectively enriches the nutrient concentrations in the upper water column and thus promotes growth of phytoplankton but reduces the dissolved oxygen(DO) concentration and pH value in the bottom. The regional summer upwelling off Qingdao coast may facilitate the growth and regional blooming of the U. prolifera that migrate to this region with the southerly ***, the effects of the front on the aggregation of U. prolifera may be significant. In winter, the Yellow Sea Warm Current(YSWC) extends and spreads along the offshore region off the Subei Shoal towards the Qingdao coastal sea. This tongue-shaped warm water meets the cold coastal water off Qingdao, which leads to the formation of a physical front. As a consequence, remarkable fronts of nutrient and chlorophyll a(Chl a) also form between the shoreward warm water and the cold coastal water. This study increases the understanding of the interactions between the regional physical, chemical, and biological processes off the Qingdao coast.

Molecular monitoring plankton community during jellyfish blooms in the water near the Liaoning Hongyan River Nuclear Power Plant

The Liaoning Hongyan River Nuclear Power Plant is located on the east coast of Liaodong Bay in the Bohai Sea,China,and the safety of the cooling water is often threatened by large-scale jellyfish ***,monitoring jellyfish growth,migration,and disappearance is essential to the safety of the nuclear power *** this study,high-throughput sequencing was used to analyze the community characteristics of mesoplankton in the sea area at the inlet and outlet from April to September *** the same time,the micro-individuals of jellyfish(including oosperm,planula,polyps,or ephyra of jellyfish)in the water were detected by real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR(qPCR).Both the maximum abundance of Aurelia coerulea and Nemopilema nomurai in July were detected by high-throughput sequencing and q *** three common taxa of plankton(Paracalanus,Calanoida,and Poaceae)were found in the waters near the inlet and outlet,and the beta diversity of plankton in the waters near the inlet and outlet was low in the same *** on the plankton community composition in the sea water near the inlet,it could be speculated that jellyfish outbreaks would have a significant impact on the plankton via the predation *** maximum mt-16S rDNA copy numbers of *** and *** in the samples from the waters of Liaodong Bay were detected in June 2019,and that of *** showed an increasing trend from north to south,with the jellyfish tending to move to the seawaters near the *** results indicate that the optimum monitoring period for jellyfish outbreaks in Liaodong Bay is from the end of May to the end of July.

marine ecological risk assessment for the herbicide sulfometuron-methyl based on species sensitivity distribution approach

In recent years,herbicide sulfometuron-methyl(SM)has been used to kill the invasive plant Spartina alterniflora in some coastal areas of China,which may lead to the toxic effects on non-target marine *** 96-h median effective concentrations(96-h EC50)of SM on six species of marine microalgae were measured in growth inhibition tests,and were then compared with other published toxicity data,based on which a method of species sensitivity distribution(SSD)was built to estimate the hazardous concentration of SM for 5%of species(HC5)and potentially affected fraction(PAF)for a certain *** indicate that SM exhibited a high toxicity to two species of green algae(Chlorella pacifica and Dunaliella salina)with a 96-h EC50 of 0.11 and 0.13 mg/L respectively,had a medium toxicity to two species of golden algae(Diacronema viridis and Isochrysis galbana)with a 96-h EC50 of 14.24 and 21.48 mg/L respectively,and showed a low toxicity to two species of diatoms(Skeletonema costatum and Phaeodactylum tricornutum)with a 96-h EC50 of 148.99 and>100 mg/L,*** estimated values of HC5 and the predicted no-effect concentrations(PNEC)for SM were 0.077 and 0.015 mg/L,*** to the current dosage for killing *** in tidal flats in Fujian Province,China,SM entering the sea by spraying might cause the acute injury or death of 14%of marine *** hazard could last for about a month for those sensitive ***,on the premise of inhibiting the growth of this invasive plant,the dosage of SM should be reduced as much as possible to avoid severe damage to the marine *** results provide a valuable information for marine ecological risk assessment on SM and for marine environmental management.

Effects of inorganic nutrients and environmental factors on the removal of n-propylbenzene and isopropylbenzene in seawater by cryptophytes Rhinomonas reticulata S6A

To effectively remove n-propylbenzene(n-PBZ)and isopropylbenzene(i-PBZ)leaked into seawater using Rhinomonas reticulata S6A(a newly isolated marine microalga),the effects of three inorganic nutrients and four environmental factors on their degradation were determined after 7 d of *** show that NaNO_(3) at 300 mg/L caused a higher removal efficiency of both n-PBZ and i-PBZ(44.79%and 39.26%),while for NaH_(2) PO_(4)·H_(2) O,greater removal rates of two PBZs(47.30%and 42.23%)were achieved at 30 and 20 mg/L,***_(3) supplementation(500-750 mg/L)resulted in a large reduction(43.67%-45.04%)in i-PBZ *** change in seawater pH(from 6 to 9)did not affect the elimination of n-PBZ and *** most suitable salinity and temperature were 30 and 25-30℃,respectively,leading to the PBZs removal of~40%.Light intensity exhibited significant influence on elimination of PBZs,and the maximum removal efficiencies of 56.07%(n-PBZ)and 55.00%(i-PBZ)were recorded under 200 and 600μmol/(m^(2)·s),*** addition,the microalga could still remove PBZs when it failed to grow well due to darkness,strong light,low temperature,or low salinity,which might mean that good growth of alga is not always a necessary condition for PBZs ***,attention should be paid to the suitability of nutrient levels and environmental conditions(excluding pH)in seawater when using microalgae for bioremediating PBZs-contaminated seawater.
