Endophytic bacteria are promising bacterial fertilizers to improve plant growth under adverse *** ecological remediation of coastal wetlands,it was necessary to investigate the effect and interaction of endophytes on halophytes under saline-alkali *** this study,an endophytic bacterium strain HK1 isolated from halophytes was selected to infect Suaeda glauca under pH(7 and 8)and salinity gradient(150,300 and 450mmolL^(-1)).Strain HK1 was identified as Pantoea ananatis and it had ability to fix nitrogen,dissolve inorganic phosphorus and produce indole-3-aceticacid(IAA).The results showed that strain HK1 could promote the growth of *** seedings when the salinity was less than 300mmolL^(-1),in view of longer shoot length and heavier fresh *** infected plants could produce more proline to decrease the permeability of cells,which content increased by 26.2%–61.1%compared to the non-infected ***,the oxidative stress of infected plants was relieved with the malondialdehyde(MDA)content decreased by 16.8%–32.9%,and the peroxidase(POD)activity and catalase(CAT)activity increased by 100%–500%and 6.2%–71.4%,*** analysis revealed that increasing proline content and enhancing CAT and POD activities were the main pathways to alleviate saline-alkali stress by strain HK1 infection,and the latter might be more *** study illustrated that endophytic bacteria could promote the growth of halophytes by regulation of osmotic substances and strengthening antioxidant *** finding would be helpful for the bioremediation of coastal soil.

Geochemical characteristics of major and trace elements in the Okinawa Trough basaltic glass

The Okinawa Trough（OT） is a back-arc basin at an initial spreading stage that is under the influence of subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate. In this study, we analyzed the geochemical compositions of basaltic glass in the OT and discussed the effects of different magmatic sources, evolution, and subducted components in basalts. Our results showed that the middle and southern regions of the OT exhibit characteristics consistent with an iron-rich tholeiite series. Trace element proportions conform to the typical spider diagram pattern characteristic of back-arc basin basalts, rich in large ion lithophile elements（LILEs） including Rb, Ba, Pb, U, and Th, while depleted in high field-strength elements（HFSEs） including Nb, Ta, Zr, Hf, and Ti. The distribution of rare earth elements（REEs） is also consistent with enrichment by right-leaning light rare earth elements（LREEs）.The addition of enriched mantle type I（EMI） materials as well as mantle heterogeneity may have led to variable degrees of enrichment in different regions. The magma source of the middle trough has undergone crystallization towards pyroxene, while development of plagioclase was restricted partly, and the crystallization of spinel and olivine ceased altogether. At the same time, crystallization of the southern OT magma source was dominated by olivine and including the formation of plagioclase, pyroxene, and magnetite（or titanomagnetite）. Finally, the results of this study showed that 90% Th, 95% Ba in the southern basalt, 50%–70% Th and 70%–90% Ba in the middle basalt originated from subducted component. Different subducted component influence may be due to different subduction zone structural feature.

Characterization of microbial communities in sediments of the South Yellow Sea

Illumina sequencing and quantitative PCR(qPCR)based on the 16 S ribosomal RNA(rRNA)gene were conducted to characterize the vertical distribution of bacterial and archaeal communities in the sediments of two sites from the South Yellow *** bacterial and archaeal communities showed a clear stratified distribution with sediment *** microbial communities in the upper layers were distinct from those in the deeper layers;the relative abundances of sequences of Thaumarchaeota,Gammaproteobacteria,and Actinobacteria were higher in the upper than in the deeper sediments,whereas the sequences of Bathyarchaeia,Lokiarchaeota,Euryarchaeota,Chloroflexi,and Deltaproteobacteria were relatively more abundant in the deeper *** depth and total organic carbon(TOC)can significantly influence both the bacterial and archaeal ***,bacterial and archaeal groups potentially involved in nitrogen,sulfur,and methane metabolism were detected in both *** our study,both ammonia-oxidizing bacteria(Nitrospira)and ammonia-oxidizing archaea(Candidatus Nitrosopumilus)were responsible for ammonia ***,sulfur-reducing bacteria SEEP-SRB1 forming consortia with anaerobic methane-oxidizing archaea ANME-2 a-2 b were capable of anaerobic methane oxidation(AOM)in the 3400-02 sediment samples.

The effects of DDT on the feeding, respiration, survival, and reproduction of Sinocalanus tenellus(Copepoda:Calanoida)

DDT （dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane） as a type of organochlorine pesticides, is an important compo nent of pesticides pollution whose impact on the marine ecosystem is urgently to be evaluated. To investi gate the biological effects of DDT on the marine ecosystem, copepods being the main contributor of sec ondary productivity in the marine ecosystem, were selected as target animals. The influence of DDT on the feeding, respiration, survival, and reproduction of Sinocalanus tenellus （S. tenellus） was analyzed and the antioxidant enzymes activities in the individuals were measured under different exposure concentrations of DDT. The 48 h median lethal concentration （LC50） and 96 h LC50 of DDT to S. tenellus were 5.44 and 2.50 pg/dma, respectively. The filtration rates, grazing rates, and respiration of S. tenellus decreased apparently with increased DDT concentrations. Under lower concentration （〈625 ng/dm3） of DDT, the activities of the antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase and catalase in the animals increased significantly compared with those in the animals without any exposure to DDT, which suggested that the antioxidant enzymes can protect the animals from oxidative damage. However, the activity of the antioxidant enzyme decreased when the animals were exposed to higher concentration （1250-2 500 ng/dma） of DDT. The sur-vival rate of both females and males was reduced when they were exposed to DDT less than 250 ng/dm3, but females showed higher survival rate than males when they are under the same concentration. The hatching ratio and the egg diameters of S. tenellus decreased significantly when they were exposed to DDT with a concentration of 25 and 250 ng/dm3, however, the cumulative egg production did not show any significant variation when the animals were exposed to the above DDT concentration. Effects of Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma Treatment on Pentachlorophenol Removal of Granular Activated Carbon

The pentachlorophenol （PCP） adsorbed granular activated carbon （GAC） was treated by dielectric barrier discharge （DBD） plasma. The effects of DBD plasma on the structure of GAC and PCP decomposition were analyzed by N2 adsorption, thermogravimetric, scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS） and gas chromatographymass spectrometry （GC-MS）. The experimental data of adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics of PCP on GAC were fitted with different kinetics and isotherm models, respectively. The results indicate that the types of N2 adsorption isotherm of GAC are not changed by DBD plasma, while the specific surface area and pore volume increase after DBD plasma treatment. It is found that the weight loss of the saturated GAC is the highest, on the contrary, the weight loss of DBD treated GAC is the least because of reduced PCP residue on the GAC. The XPS spectra and SEM image suggest that some PCP on the GAC is removed by DBD plasma, and the surface of GAC treated by DBD plasma presents irregular and heterogeneous morphology. The GC-MS identification of by-products shows that two main dechlorination intermediate products, tetrachlorophenol and trichlorophenol, are distinguished. The fitting results of experimental data of adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics indicate that the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second order models can be used for the prediction of the kinetics of virgin GAC and DBD treated GAC for PCP adsorption, and the Langmuir isotherm model fits better with the data of adsorption isotherm than the Freundlich isotherm in the adsorption of PCP on virgin GAC and DBD treated GAC.

Effect of wetland plant fermentation broth on nitrogen removal and bioenergy generation in constructed wetland-microbial fuel cells

Constructed wetlands(CWs)are widely used as a tertiary treatment technology,and the addition of carbon sources can significantly improve advanced nitrogen ***,excessive carbon sources would lead to an increase in the effluent chemical oxygen demand in CWs,and microbial fuel cells(MFCs)can convert these into *** this study,constructed wetland-microbial fuel cells(CW-MFCs)were built to achieve simultaneous nitrogen removal and electricity generation,using wetland plant litter fermentation broths as carbon *** total nitrogen removal in the groups with fermentation broth addition(FGs)reached 83.33%,which was 19.64%higher than that in the CG(group without fermentation broth),and the mean voltages in the FGs were at least 2.6 times higher than that of the ***,two main components of the fermentation broths,acetic acid(Ac)and humic acid(HA),were identified using a three-dimensional excitation emission matrix and gas chromatograph and added to CW-MFCs to explore the influence mechanism on the treatment *** and electrogenesis presented the same tendency:Ac&HA>Ac>CG’(groups without Ac and HA).These results indicate that Ac and HA increased the abundance of functional genes associated with nitrogen metabolism and electron *** study demonstrated that CW-MFC fermentation broth addition can be a potential strategy for the disposal of secondary effluent and bioelectricity generation.

Soil organic carbon storages and bacterial communities along a restored mangrove soil chronosequence in the Jiulong River Estuary:From tidal flats to mangrove afforestation

Among many ecological services provided by mangrove ecosystems,soil organic carbon(SOC)storages have recently received much attention owing to the increasing atmospheric partial pressure of dissolved CO_(2)(pCO_(2)).Bacteria are fundamental to ecosystem functions and strongly influence the coupling of coastal carbon,nitrogen,and sulfur cycling in *** SOC storage and bacterial communities along a restored mangrove soil chronosequence in the Jiulong River Estuary were explored using the 16S rDNA sequencing *** results showed the SOC storage in the 100 cm soil profile was 103.31±5.87 kg C m^(−2)and 93.10±11.28 kg C m^(−2)for mangroves with afforestation ages of 36 and 60 years,*** total nitrogen(TN)and total sulfur(TS)contents exhibited significant correlations with the SOC in the mangrove soils,but only TN and SOC showed significant correlation in tidal flat *** the tidal flats and mangroves occupied the contiguous intertidal zone within several kilometers,the variations in the SOC storage along the restored mangrove soil chronosequence were notably *** Functional Annotation of Prokaryotic Taxa(FAPROTAX)database was used to annotate the metabolic functions of the bacteria in the *** annotation revealed that only four metabolic functions were enriched with a higher relative abundance of the corresponding bacteria,and these enriched functions were largely associated with sulfate *** addition,the specifically critical bacterial taxa that were associated with the SOC accumulation and nutrient cycling,shaped the distinct metabolic functions,and consequently facilitated the SOC accumulation in the mangrove soils with various afforestation *** general homogenization of the microbial community and composition along the intertidal soil chronosequence was primarily driven by the reciprocating tidal flows and geographical contiguity.

Insights into the differences in leaf functional traits of heterophyllous Syringa oblata under different light intensities

Many plants exhibit heterophylly; the spatially and temporally remarkable ontogenetic differences in leaf morphology may play an adaptative role in their success under diverse habitats. Thus, this study aimed to gain insights into differences in leaf functional traits of heterophyllous Syringa oblata Lindl., which has been widely used as an ornamental tree around the world under different light intensities in East China. No significant differences existed in specific leaf area （SLA） between lanceolate- and heart-shaped leaves. Differ- ences in the investment per unit of light capture surface area deployed between lanceolate- and heart-shaped leaves may benot obvious. This may be attributing to the fact that single leaf wet and dry weight of heart-shaped leaves were significantly higher than those of lanceolate leaves but leaf length and leaf thickness of heart-shaped leaves were significantly lower than those of lanceolate leaves. The SLA of shade trees was sig- nificantly higher than that of sun trees. The investment per unit of light capture surface of shade trees was lower than that of sun trees, making it possible to increase light capture and use efficiency in low-light environments. The phenotypic plas- ticity of most leaf functional traits of lanceoiate leaves was higher than those of heart-shaped leaves because the former is the juvenile and the latter is the adult leaf shape during the process of phylogenetic development of S. oblate. The higher range of phenotypic plasticity of leaf thickness and leaf moisture for sun trees may be beneficial to obtain a more efficient control of water loss and nutrient deprivation in high- light environments, and the lower range of phenotypic plas- ticity of single leaf wet and dry weight, and SLA for shade trees may gain an advantage to increase resource （especially light） capture and use efficiency in low-light environments. Variations in Dissolved Methane in the Yellow Sea During the Spring Algal Blooms of 2009

Methane (CH4) is an important greenhouse gas and oceans are net sources of atmospheric CH4. The effects of environ- mental factors on the CH4 variation during different phases of the spring algal blooms were examined during two cruises conducted in the Yellow Sea (YS) from February to April of 2009. During the pre-bloom period from February to March, low CH4 saturation (< 134%) was observed in the surface water, except at two nearshore stations where the CH4 levels were above 140% in March due to mixing with the coastal water. During the bloom period, CH4 increased obviously at two bloom-tracking stations, especially at the surface with mean saturations of 140% and 170%. The increase in CH4 concentration/saturation is thought to be the result of in situ CH4 production. The particulate organic carbon (POC) and chlorophyll a contents were believed to be important factors that influ- enced the CH4 production. In addition, the presence of different dominant phytoplankton species and the grazing pressure may have stimulated the CH4 production by supplying potential methanogenic substrates (such as dimethylsulphoniopropionate (DMSP)). Both the incubation data and the in situ estimations further evidenced the significant influence of the spring blooms on the CH4 production. The calculated sea-to-air CH4 fluxes during the bloom period were not significantly higher than those during the pre-bloom period despite the bloom-increased CH4 saturation. This is due to the variation in physical forcing (such as wind speed), which is the main driver for determining the CH4 flux. Finally, we estimated the annual CH4 flux in the YS as 9.0 μmol m 2 d 1;the findings suggest that the YS is a natural source of atmospheric CH4.
