Light Use Efficiency Model Based on Chlorophyll Content Better Captures Seasonal Gross Primary Production Dynamics of Deciduous Broadleaf Forests

Gross primary production(GPP)is a crucial indicator representing the absorption of atmospheric CO_(2) by *** present,the estimation of GPP by remote sensing is mainly based on leaf-related vegetation indexes and leaf-related biophysical para-meter leaf area index(LAI),which are not completely synchronized in seasonality with *** this study,we proposed chlorophyll content-based light use efficiency model(CC-LUE)to improve GPP estimates,as chlorophyll is the direct site of photosynthesis,and only the light absorbed by chlorophyll is used in the photosynthetic *** CC-LUE model is constructed by establishing a linear correlation between satellite-derived canopy chlorophyll content(Chlcanopy)and *** method was calibrated and validated utiliz-ing 7-d averaged in-situ GPP data from 14 eddy covariance flux towers covering deciduous broadleaf forest ecosystems across five dif-ferent climate *** showed a relatively robust seasonal consistency between Chlcanopy with GPP in deciduous broadleaf forests under different climatic *** CC-LUE model explained 88% of the in-situ GPP seasonality for all validation site-year and 56.0% of in-situ GPP variations through the growing season,outperforming the three widely used LUE models(MODIS-GPP algorithm,Vegetation Photosynthesis Model(VPM),and the eddy covariance-light use efficiency model(EC-LUE)).Additionally,the CC-LUE model(RMSE=0.50 g C/(m^(2)·d))significantly improved the underestimation of GPP during the growing season in semi-arid region,re-markably decreasing the root mean square error of averaged growing season GPP simulation and in-situ GPP by 75.4%,73.4%,and 37.5%,compared with MOD17(RMSE=2.03 g C/(m^(2)·d)),VPM(RMSE=1.88 g C/(m^(2)·d)),and EC-LUE(RMSE=0.80 g C/(m^(2)·d))*** chlorophyll-based method proved superior in capturing the seasonal variations of GPP in forest ecosystems,thereby provid-ing the possibility of a more precise depiction of forest seasonal carbon uptake.

Impact of Energy Transition on CO2 Emissions in China's Cities

Reducing global carbon dioxide（CO2） emissions is essential for meeting climate change mitigation goals, especially in urban areas. In this regard, this study used CO2emissions and energy transition data from 296 China's cities in 2020 and the extended Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population, Affluence, and Technology（STIRPAT） model to explore the relationship between energy transition and CO2emissions at the city-scale. The findings indicate a spatial distribution of energy transition magnitude that is high in the west and low in the east, which does not align with economic status and total CO2emissions, posing significant challenges for China's energy transition and urban CO2reduction. The STIRPAT model reveals that urban CO2emissions are significantly driven by increases in population size, levels of economic development, and the expansion of transportation infrastructure. Conversely, investments in science and education, the expansion of the tertiary sector, and the disruptive effects of the COVID-19（Coronavirus Disease 2019） pandemic are associated with notable reductions in CO2emissions. Specifically, the analysis estimates that a 1.00% increase in the energy transition degree is associated witha 0.90% decrease in urban CO2emissions. However, regional assessments underscore considerable spatial heterogeneity in the energy transition effect, with CO2reduction benefits being less pronounced in central and western cities. These findings suggest that future clean energy initiatives should be strategically concentrated in eastern China, where the demand and potential for CO2mitigation are greater. This study deepens the understanding of the complex relationship between energy transition and urban CO2emissions, offering valuable insights to inform targeted policy interventions for carbon reduction at the city level.

Resorption Efficiency of Four Cations in Different Tree Species in a subtropical Common Garden

Late Pleistocene aeolian activity in Haitan Island, Southeast China: Insights from optically stimulated luminescence dating of coastal dunes on marine terraces

The 'Old Red Sand' is a type of semicemented medium-fine sandy sediment that is red(10R_4/8) or brown red(2.5YR_4/8) in colour and is found in late Quaternary deposits. The sediments have distinctive characteristics and are a critical archive for understanding climatic changes in the coastal areas of East Asia. The ages of the late Quaternary aeolian sand dunes from Haitan Island in the coastal area of South China are still in debate. In this study, three sets of marine terraces were identified in the northern region of Haitan Island. Aeolian dune sands are well preserved on the top of these terraces. Quartz Optically Stimulated Luminescence dating and the distribution of the formation ages demonstrated that the palaeo-dunes are deposits from the middle-late period of the Late Pleistocene(Q_3^(2-3)). The period may be divided into three stages, 100-90 ka, 70-60 ka, and 40-20 ka, in which the palaeo-dunes of the first two stages are more widespread and were formed separately during a low-sea level period of the Marine Isotope Stages 5 b and 4. Several depositional palaeo-flood event records were preserved during the last stage due to the increasing gradient of mountain gullies formed during the Last Glacial Maximum.

Effects of organic matter on the distribution of rare earth elements in red soil aggregates during ecological restoration

Rare earth elements(REEs)are widely applied in high-tech ***,their increasing presence in the food chain poses significant risks to human *** present,little is known about the effects of organic matter on the distribution of ion-adsorbed REEs in soil aggregates during ecological *** soil derived from coarse-grained granite in Southern China is both prone to ecosystem degradation from soil erosion and rich in *** the distribution of REEs in soil aggregates undergoing ecological restoration is helpful to formulate effective measures for controlling the environmental migration of *** sites that had undergone different durations/degrees of ecological restoration were selected in the areas to *** concentration of six different aggregates sizes(5 mm)were analyzed and the enrichment coefficients were calculated in 4 sample sites of severe-degraded ecosystem in Changting County,Fujian Province,Southern *** results showed that the total rare earth elements(TREEs)concentration in the aggregates increased from 213 mg kg^(-1) to 528 mg kg^(-1) with the extension of the ecological restoration *** the initial stages of ecological restoration,there was no significant difference in the TREEs concentration among the six aggregates ***,in the middle and late stages of restoration,the concentration of TREEs increased significantly with the decrease of aggregate *** concentration of individual REEs showed three changing trends with sizes of aggregates during ecological restoration,respectively:1)no obvious regular change(S1),2)a V-shaped change trend(S2),and 3)increasing concentration with the decrease of aggregate size(S3 and S4).Ce and Eu showed a positive and negative anomaly in the soil aggregates,***,the light rare earth elements(LREEs)were enriched,while the heavy rare earth elements(HREEs)were depleted during the initial stages,and the HREEs were

Roles of biochars’properties in their water-holding capacity and bound water evaporation:quantitative importance and controlling mechanism

Important properties of biochar as an effective soil amendment are its high water-holding capacity(WHC)and inhibition of water ***,the mechanism and the importance of biochar properties in controlling its own WHC and bound water evaporation remain little *** this study,wheat straw and pine sawdust biochars were pyrolyzed in N_(2)-flow,CO_(2)-flow,and air-limitation environments at 300-750℃,and a series of the produced biochars’properties were characterized to explore the dominant controlling factors of their WHC and bound water *** results have shown that with the increasing contents of hydrogen,nitrogen,and oxygen as well as such ratios as H/C,and(O+N)/C,WHC of the biochars was also increasing while the evaporation of biochar-bound water was *** an increase in the other studied factors,such as carbon content,pH,and specific surface area(SSA),WHC of the biochars was decreasing,and the evaporation of biochar-bound water was *** was connected with the fact that biochar-nitrogen was mainly in pyridinic and pyrrolic forms,while oxygen was in the form of C=O and C-O *** forms of nitrogen and oxygen could be the receptors of hydrogen bonds to link to H_(2)O *** hydrogen with a weak positive charge could be a donor of hydrogen bonds to link to H_(2)O ***,high carbon content,as well as high SSA,indicated more exposed aromatic carbon(hydrophobic sites)that could suppress the binding of H_(2)O ***,high pH indicated that H_(2)O molecules were dominated by OH-,which generated strong electrostatic repulsion with the negatively charged nitrogen-and oxygencontaining groups of *** was also shown that the nitrogen-containing groups played a more important role(importance-0.31)in WHC of the biochar than other parameters,including carbon,oxygen,hydrogen,ash contents,pH,SSA(importance from 0.02 to 0.09).Nitrogen,oxygen,and carbon contents had the most important influ

Gap edge canopy buffering of throughfall deposition in a subalpine natural forest

Base cation loads are rarely considered in forest gap edge canopies,but they can play critical roles in capturing or buffering atmospheric deposition in forests with frequent gap disturbances,such as subalpine *** selected an expanded gap edge canopy and a closed canopy in a subalpine natural forest on the eastern Tibetan *** throughfall deposition and canopy exchange processes of common base cations(K^(+),Ca^(2+),Na^(+),and Mg^(2+))were continuously studied over two *** results showed that the enrichment ratio and fluxes had lower levels of base cations in the gap-edge canopy than in the closed canopy,which indicated that base cations were concentrated more in the closed canopy than in the gap-edge *** Ca^(2+)in the gap-edge canopy showed a higher net throughfall flux,the annual net throughfall fluxes of K^(+),Na^(+) and Mg^(2+) within the gap-edge canopy were 1.83,6.75 and 2.95 times lower than those in the closed canopy,***,dry deposition fluxes of base cations significantly decreased in the gap edge canopy compared to those in the closed canopy,and the decreasing tendency was more significant during the snowy season than during the rainy ***,these results suggest that the amount of base cations in subalpine natural forest ecosystems may be overestimated when the throughfall deposition of ions in gap edge canopies is ignored.

Dynamics of iron and aluminum storages in a subtropical forest headwater stream

The forest headwater streams are important hubs for connecting terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems,with plant litter and sediments as the major carriers for material migrations;however,until now we knew little about the dynamics of trace elements such as iron(Fe)and aluminum(Al)in forest headwater ***,we quantitatively identified the spatiotemporal dynamics of Fe and Al storages in plant litter and sediments and their influencing factors in a subtropical forest headwater stream,and assessed the potential pollution *** results showed that:(1)the mean concentrations of Fe and Al in plant litter(sediments)were 5.48 and 8.46(7.39 and 47.47)g·kg^(-1),and the mean storages of Fe and Al in plant litter(sediments)were 0.26 and 0.43(749.04 and 5030.90)g·m^(-2),respectively;(2)the storages of Fe and Al in plant litter and sediments significantly fluctuated from January to December,and showed a decreasing pattern from the source to mouth;and(3)storages of Fe and Al had no significant correlation with riparian forest type and the present of tributary and the Fe and Al storages in plant litter were mainly affected by water temperature and water alkalinity,and their storages in sediments were mainly affected by water temperature and frequency of rainfall;and(4)there were no anthropogenic pollution in Fe and Al in the forest headwater *** study revealed the primary factors of concentrations and storages of Fe and Al in plant litter and sediments in a forest headwater stream,which will improve our understanding of the role of headwater streams in forest nutrient storage and cycling along with hydrological processes.

In situ nitrogen removal processes in intertidal wetlands of the Yangtze Estuary

Estuarine and intertidal wetlands are important sites for nitrogen transformation and ***,the factors controlling nitrogen removal processes remain largely uncertain in the highly dynamic *** this study,continuous-flow experiment combined with 15 N isotope pairing technique was used to investigate in situ rates of denitrification and anaerobic ammonium oxidation(anammox)and their coupling with nitrification in intertidal wetlands of the Yangtze *** measured rates varied from below the detection limit to 152.39μmol N/(m^2·hr)for denitrification and from below the detection limit to 43.06μmol N/(m^2·hr)for *** coupling links of nitrogen removal processes with nitrification were mainly dependent on nitrate,organic carbon,sulfide,dissolved oxygen and ferric iron in the estuarine and intertidal ***,it was estimated that the actual nitrogen removal processes annually removed approximately 5%of the terrigenous inorganic nitrogen discharged into the Yangtze *** study gives new insights into nitrogen transformation and fate in the estuarine and intertidal wetlands.

Grain size and surface micro-texture characteristics and their paleoenvironmental significance of Holocene sediment in southern margin of the Gurbantunggut Desert,China

The southern margin of the Gurbantunggut Desert,China,is characterized by alternating layers of aeolian and alluvial *** the characteristics of arenaceous sediment in this area is of significant importance for understanding the interactive processes of wind and water forces,as well as the provenance of ***,there are relatively few investigations on the characteristics of such sediment at *** this study,we researched three aeolian-alluvial interactive stratigraphic profiles and different types of surface sediment on the desert-oasis transitional zone of southern margin of the Gurbantunggut *** on the optically stimulated luminescence(OSL)dating of aeolian sand and analyses of quartz sand grain size and surface micro-texture,we explored the aeolian-alluvial environmental change at southern margin of the desert in Holocene,as well as the provenance of *** results indicated that the grain size characteristics of different types of sediment in the stratigraphic profiles were similar to those of modern dune sand,interdune sand,muddy desert surface soil,and riverbed *** frequency curves were unimodal or bimodal,and cumulative probability curves were two-segment or three-segment,mainly composed of suspension load and saltation *** quartz sand in the sediment at southern margin of the desert had undergone alternating transformation of various exogenic forces,with short transportation distance and time,and sedimentary environment was relatively *** Holocene,southern margin of the desert primarily featured braided river deposits,and during intermittent period of river activity,there were also aeolian deposits such as sand sheet deposits,stabilized dune deposits,and mobile dune *** provenance for Holocene alluvial deposits at southern margin of the desert remains relatively constant,with the debris of the Tianshan Mountains being the primary *** sand is mainly near-source recharge,
